Thanks to the handy instructions at www.pendrivelinux.com, with a bit of tweaking done following the guides to installing xfce and removing gnome at www.psychocats.net/ubuntu and a bit of Synaptic jiggery pokery I now need never use Windows again :D

So long as I have access to a computer that can boot from a memory stick.  :-D
