Stolen from some stranger on Last.fm:
First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one (When calculating your score, don't count your top 20 artists, only the similar artists).

I got 73, and it makes this game far too easy.

Well that's no fun :-(
Edit: Mine's 79, btw

How eclectic is the musical preference of nickholland?
nickholland's eclectic score is
60/100
Not bad...not good. But not bad.
-
The problem is that last.fm is a really, really skewed view of what I like the most or listen to the most. Last.fm doesn't take into account ANY actual CD I listen to, and for some reason doesn't count mp3s I play, either. Since most of my music listening is done on a stereo, my last.fm profile is more indicative of "What artists I like that are or were in some sense popular", which is why bands like Pavement are way up on my list despite the fact that I actually stopped listening to Pavement albums about a decade ago because I am burned out on them.
-
The little script gave me 75/100. I was expecting it to be lower, I really don't listen to that big of a variety.
I agree with zero on this one, last.fm has a big problem in that you can't delete artists anymore. There are foour or five artists in my top 20 that I'm pretty much burnt out on but used to love therefore they will be hanging out there for some time in the future.
-
I don't use Last.fm, but I listen to classical and blues and country and bluegrass and reggae and ska and dub and jazz from the 30s to the 60s and 50s rock 'n' roll and 60s singer-songwriter and 70s punk and proto-punk and 80s post-punk and new-wave and 90s grunge and "indie" and "I.D.M." and . . .
-
88/100 bitches. I really am cooler than all of you.

No fuck you I win.

I have always said that my "eclectic" taste in music is just an incidental side-effect of mental illness.
There is a potentially serious answer, I guess. Since one of the hallmarks of being truly Zen is the ability to hold two thoughts in one's mind simultaneously without going bonkers, it could follow that being able to hold the appreciation of radically different styles in mind signifies that you have a deeper-than-visceral understanding of sound waves.
...or something. I'm not drunk enough to have this discussion yet.
-
Don't think that's the same thing Yakob did
It's not the exact same but it's very similar. Mine used 8 similar artists while that handy little link used the top 5.
-
Why do we assume that being eclectic is better than having narrowed down? Just curious.
I don't think it is necessarily better, I reckon a lot of the basis for the claim that narrowing down isn't as good comes from the consumerist record collector mindset. Then again, I'd say it also comes from people who're dismissive and prejudiced about certain kinds of music without good reason. And probably a few other things lobbed in as well. Personally, I reckon that if it's what really drives you then sticking to metal is as fine as going for a buffet approach. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
-
No fuck you I win.
No, I win 91/100
-
Someone on a local message board challeneged me to name 1000 bands I like, because I had said I like at least a thousand bands.
I just typed up the first 100 in under 10 minutes without even stopping to think.
When I've finished the whole list, I'll post it here and I fucking win, bitches!
NB: I am getting close to drunk, but at least I can spell when I drunk-post!

Man, eclectic scores are so last season. It's all about the Open Mind Index nowadays:

85/100.
And Khar is right. I got either 117 or 123, I forget which.
Also: I fail to see what is so good about open mindedness. Narrow mindedness for the win.
-
Fuck this game.
I'm eclectic, so fuck you.
Fuck youuuuuuuuuuu! *shakes fist*

I got 65/100 on my 'eclectic' score. It seems they're having server issues with the open mind index at the moment, but I've done it before and my score is in the mid-60s for it too if I recall correctly.
I have two issues with these though. The major one is that the 'similar artists' that guide the first score and the genre tags that guide the second are both put in by the users of the site, and seriously, they're useless. Anything and everything gets tagged with 'indie', including bands like the Beatles, and the Arcade Fire is listed as a similar artist for half the stuff I listen to just because they're 'indie darlings' and so many people listen to them as well as the bands that I do. (Radiohead comes up really often too as a similar artist for this reason.)
That being said...although a lot of stuff is lumped together in generic groups when it shouldn't be, I DON'T actually have a particularly varied taste in music, and I recognize it. Violins get me every time and if you chuck them into a pretty pop band, I'll probably enjoy it. And I don't think that knowing what I like best makes me a bad music fan. It's lame if you dismiss the possibility of liking anything outside of a certain genre and if you entirely stop exploring and listening to different things, but returning to a comfort zone most of the time? That's alright.
-
Khar, what are the differences between "Goth", "Gothic", and "Gothic Rock"?
-
I just finished up to #600 on my List Of A Thousand Artists I Like. So far I've been naming them off the top of my head without even consulting my collection. It's getting tough, though.
What's really interesting is that the list isn't panning out. I mean, in the last 100 I just now remembered to put Gowns and No Age, who made two of my favorite albums this year.
-
105 for me, but what does this proove?
-
No fuck you I win.
No, I win 91/100
Yeah but you like Korn.
-
92/100 with the script. Don't feel like the hardcore version in OP.

I guess that means not bad?
-
Okay. That's it. I can't take it any more. I could handle having "Goth", "Gothic", and "Gothic Rock" all as separate categories. I could even turn a blind eye to the splitting of "Indie", "Indie Pop", and "Indie Rock". But now I'm calling bullshit on this chart system. Even if you accept that genres in popular music are a sketchy proposition at best, there's no escaping the fact that "Canadian" IS NOT A GENRE.
-
Have you heard The Weakerthans?
-
You could have maybe 50 genres in your last FM and an 'eclectic score' of over 200.
By listening to Broken Social Scene and several related bands.
Listening to Broken Social Scene and several related bands is NOT eclectic taste. That is why this thread is poop.
-
I dunno, dude, off the top of my head here are artists associated with Broken Social Scene.

Do Make Say Think
Two alt-country acts, one dream-pop band, one synth-rock band, one chamber-pop band, one space-rock band, one rapper one folk-pop singer and one symphonic post-rock band. Pretty eclectic!
This thing is shit for entirely different reasons really.
-
It does sound eclectic when you say it like that, but there's almost a unifying aspect to a lot of the bands/artist that makes them sound similar somehow. You could apply several genre titles to each one, yet still categorise them under a catch-all blanket term, which would still be fair.
I'm also one of those irritating people think that source of the music is important when you're claiming to be eclectic too, so when they all come from the same source or are all popular in a certain subculture, I don't think that you can truly claim to have 'eclectic' taste.
-
"Canadian" IS NOT A GENRE.
Neither is "Japanese" or "anime" for that matter.
-
Fuck you Canadians are their own genre because they will defile the rest of my collection with their socialized health care and winter sports.
-
I just realised the OP had AVENGED SEVENFOLD in his top 10.
And NO ONE has done a witty flame to it.
SERIOUSLY WTF

so varied

Which one of those is the Dears?
On a side not, Nat Yanchak defines the Dears as, yes I'm totally fuckin' serious, orchestral pop noir romantique and that they pioneered it.

I'm honestly completely over them now. I was quite the impressionable young teen 10 months ago!
Which one of those is the Dears?
It looks to me that the genres are in order of the artist's apperance in the post.

Oh come on man. Less of the rash self-justification. Show some nuts! Everyone here likes or has liked shitty music. I know I certainly do, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

est_xplosif's eclectic score is 81/100

How varied is that creature's musical taste? I bet it secretly listens to Justin Timberlake when nobody's around.
-
I checked in the Monstrous Compendium. It said he was 4 hit dice with animal intelligence (1) and lives underground, so I'm thinking he probably listens to a lot of The Clash, but also contemporary indie bands influenced by a classic punk aesthetic as well as French house music like We Are Wolves. He probably kind of liked Futuresex/Lovesounds but is just intelligent enough not to bring that up on the first date with female rust monsters he met on craigslist.
-
He's gonna have bad indigestion, i play havoc on the stomach lining (steel isn't very digestible).
-

There is nothing wrong with this.
-
My eclectic score is 84 out of a hundred, which is odd, because I probably listen to less music than almost anyone else here.

90/100 Is schizophrenia the new black?
-
68/100
That seems a little low to me, but I can't argue. This is science.
-
70/100, which I guess makes me kind of average? Makes sense, I guess
Also, it makes me feel incredibly nerdy that I recognized the rust monster picture.
-
I got 72, which is pretty wierd because my friend (who listens to rock exclusively) got 89 when I put him in. :?
-
88/100
I blame it on my guilty pleasure.
Aly & AJ.

I might create a special account just to score 100 on this test.
