Title: Psychedelic Folk Music
Post by: onewheelwizzard on 03 Jan 2008, 00:58
This is a pretty self-explanatory thread.

So here are a bunch of bands that I think are pertinent and should be checked out by those who clicked on this thread with interest.

The Incredible String Band
Gary Higgins
Feathers
Espers
Daniel Higgs
Emtidi
Voice of the Seven Woods
Jack Rose
Pelt (although they sorta push the "experimental" envelope a bit much sometimes)
Faun Fables
Six Organs of Admittance
Moonkyte

I'm not sure if I'd classify Joanna Newsom in quite the same category but I've heard it being done.  Of course Devendra Banhart and Vashti Bunyan come to mind as well but I haven't listened to them enough to recommend them.

Thoughts?

VASHTI BUNYAN! Definitely, both "Just Another Diamond Day" and "Lookaftering", both exquisite.

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter really disappointed me (tISB), as did Liege and Lief (Fairport Convention). However,  "I Want to see the bright lights tonight" by Richard and Linda Thompson is a masterpiece (Richard was once in Fairport)

Rec threads are cool, but generally a description of the bands would be nice. I don't know what all of these guys sound like and I'm certainly not going to download an album each to see what they sound like. Lists don't work, I guess that's all I'm saying.

Six Organs of Admittance are killer though. If you don't like Six Organs of Admittance, you have Down's Syndrome.

Faun Fables

Have you seen them live? Dawn McCarthy is such a nice person.

The LPDs are a definite favorite of mine.

and while not really psychedelic at all, I'm sure most of the people in this thread would probably enjoy Death In June.

Monster Island (http://www.myspace.com/monsterisland13)
Experimental psych-folk/pop super-group from Detroit. Totally great!

Kemialliset Ystävät (http://www.myspace.com/valojuopot)
Finnish avant-garde psychedelia... really good.

Fursaxa (http://www.myspace.com/fursaxa)
Acid folk from Philadelphia with female vocals.

Sunburned (http://www.myspace.com/sunburnedhandoftheman)
AKA Sunburned Hand of the Man. Leans more towards free improv/weirdness than folk, but high quality nonetheless.

Jeweled Antler Collective... haven't got a link for these guys, but they're a totally weird improv collective that utilize lots of nature imagery. They're folky at times... I like 'em.

That guy who was all crazy about Vashti Bunyan and Richard & Linda Thompson is so right.

I might call the High Violets psychedelic. And I know they're folk influenced.

I don't know, Strawberry Alarm Clock?  :-P
