Title: Sia, Some People Have Real Problems
Post by: Luke C on 07 Jan 2008, 14:15
Sia, mostly known from Zero7 (who are awesome by the way), has released a solo album.

Many folks here should check it out, I feel it may appeal to the QC masses, but probably not Khar. Though you never know.

Dude you'd be surprised what Khar listens to besides metal.

He introduced me to Strawberry Switchblade.

But man, is this Sia character an adorable scottish goth chick who dances jerkily in a little polka dot dress?

Cos otherwise there might be problems with this theory.

Dude, the adorable Scottish goth chick in the polka dot dress made music that causes testacles to disintegrate. It is the least metal thing ever.

I was in my friendly neighbourhood record store yesterday and they were playing this. Very cool, I'll probably buy it on the next pay-cheque. It sounded really soulful and a slightly 60s-retro kind of a way.

The cover is almost unbearably twee, though.

She's actually kind of an adorable Australian chick who dances jerkily under blacklights in weird glo paint outfits. I'd recommend anyone go to a show of hers, she's hilarious. She'll be up here in Seattle in Feb, I'll be there. I saw her at the Croc a month or two ago, great show... One of the last I ever saw there...

Interesting.

I'm gonna go ahead and request an upload, though I understand if it's ignored.

So not surprisingly I caved in and bought it today instead of waiting 'til my next pay-cheque. What the hell, I've still got money in the bank, right?

Anyway, it's really lovely! And I don't mean that in a back-handed or patronising way. It reminds me a little of Dusty in Memphis, in the way it managed to be incredibly soulful without being necessarily very punchy. Perhaps a more apt comparison would be to Cat Power's the Greatest, but with less horns and more strings (same great Memphis-style drumming throughout, though). As far as recent 60s-soul-inspired albums go, I enjoyed it infinitely more than I enjoyed Amy Winehouse's Back to Black (which I didn't think was really all that great, to be honest). True, some of the songs on Some People Have Real Problems stray a little close to M.O.R. territory, but good taste always prevails. Overall, a very promising start to 2008!

Harry, have you checked out Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings yet?

No. Presumably I should?

Are you sure that making testicles disintegrate is a wussy thing?  If I could (without having to touch them), there are a few guys I might do this to.

Dude go listen to Since Yesterday and then get back to me. That band is unbearably twee. It makes me want to strangle bunnies. But also smile and dance around while I'm doing it.

Yes, good God. 100 Days, 100 Nights sounds like a lost Four Tops record or something, where they let a woman be in charge. And is she ever!

But . . . wait, wouldn't letting a woman be in charge of the Four Tops mean you'd be missing out on Levi Stubbs? That doesn't sound like such a good thing!

Seriously though, I'll look into it. Maybe we should have a moratorium on new music for just a year, so that I could catch up on all the stuff some of the stuff a fraction of the stuff I haven't had a chance to get around to?

They'll be in Melbourne mid February iirc. Perth early March I think.

Wait, I have met this woman, she has played music at the club I work at. I handed her a crate of foster's bottles and a carton of orange juice!
Real talk!
Lovely girl. I didn't really like her music though...

Levi Stubbs is in the background, providing much-loved doo-wopping.

Oh Dammit. Now all I can think about is the series finale of Six Feet Under. Thanks a lot. I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.

No offense Johnny, but Levi Stubbs would be completely wasted if all he was doing was doo-wopping.

First nomination for top ten worst album covers of 2008.

Wait 'til you see the art inside the album cover.

Actually, just check out her website for a taste. http://www.siamusic.net/main.html (http://www.siamusic.net/main.html). I believe there was some kind of competition for children to design all the art, or something.

Definitely a winner in the "artwork has absolutely nothing in common with the music" category, though.

I like the album cover.  And it does have at least some correlation with the material, or at least the song 'Playground'.

But yeah, this album is definitely a promising start to 2008

I can't decide whether I like the cover or not. I like its childlike innocence but I don't like errm the fact its so childlike, if that makes any sense at all.

Gotta agree that she's hella cute though.

Hells yeah.
