Title: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
Post by: PassiveTheory on 21 Jan 2008, 03:02
According to numerous sources the lineup for the festival is to be announced at 3pm tomorrow, and I, for one, am absolutely stoked.

Thoughts?

I'll never be able to go, but I am mildly curious to see the lineup.

Oh wow. Jack Johnson is the day 1 headliner. Gnarly.

I'd show up on the first day to heckle Stars and check out Spank Rock, but other than that, third day looks pretty damned good. I see at least 9 acts worth seeing. I hear Roger Waters can barely sing these days.

*edit - Awesome as it would be to see John Waters singing "Dark Side of the Moon", it won't happen in this lifetime

Heckly Stars?  Why?

Anyhow, between Kraftwerk, Portishead, Stephen Malkmus, Islands, and St. Vincent, day two has some bands that would be great, but so many that I couldn't really care about.  Day one is even worse, with really just The Breeders, Stars, Dan Deacon, and The Black Lips that I'd much care about.

Day three is the runaway winner with Spiritualized, Chromeo, Les Savy Fav, Holy Fuck, Black Mountain, I'm From Barcelona, and Man Man, as well as a bunch of artists that would likely be fun to see, but who I'm not especially amazed by.

Doesn't seem too strong is what I guess I'm saying.

Day three looks pretty good. I'd only go on day one to see Battles and Modeselektor, and day 2 to see Boys Noize. And Kraftwerk I guess.

ps Jack Johnson can eat 19 dicks

Who the fuck are The Swell Season and why are their names bigger instead of Stars, Battles or Animal Collective?

I'll throw in a twentieth to that pot.

Hmm, Les Savy Fav, Holy Fuck, Battles... I'd see them. I'm sure there are other bands there I'd pay to see too, but I ain't squinting.

Seriously, what the fuck is Jack Johnson doing headlining day 1? What noteworthy thing has he done (other than consume a vast amount of phallus) to merit a headlining spot?

The Swell Season are kind an acoustic folky duo started by the lead singer for The Frames (an Irish rock band, if you don't know) and a Czech singer and pianist.

Here, give em a listen (http://www.myspace.com/theswellseason)

first day looks alright, second not so much, third appears to be where the money's at, though.

tempting, yes.

I mean... I think it's great that they're aiming for a different audience... But there's something wrong with the statue of the bands even on the 3rd line. Last year you had stalwarts like Faithless and Sonic Youth on the 3rd line and this year you have indie babies like the National and Chromeo?... Something's seriously wrong here.

I hear Roger Waters can barely sing these days.

You hear wrong. I saw him play "Dark Side" last year and it was fucking amazing, and spot on. His guitarist/Dave Gilmour impersonator is especially good.

Torquil's totally got it coming.

I've heard he's a bit of a jerk, but my ladyfriend and my brother talked with him in Vancouver, and had nothing but nice things to say.  Also, he makes rather lovely music.  And heckling might stop him from playing it at this show.

I will most likely never go to one of these because I live on the east coast.
Also, these headlining bands have me on edge. Portishead is where it is at for me.
Either way though, unlike last year, I would not be to jealous of those going to this year's Coachella.

I'm actually going to go see Stars on Saturday in Aberdeen with the intention of heckling a bit.

I've got some excellent ideas. I might try to record it with my phone.

This would rock my socks off, and my boxers, and make me erect. A Coachella (not called Coachella) in New York, even with this year's almost completely lackluster lineup, would be amazing. We could have a qc festival meetup.

Fuck, I'm stuck in the Midwest.  I can't do either New Jersey or California

Busy P is playing as well. I thought Kavinsky was on Ed Banger but it turns out I was mistaken!

looks like we'll be turning in early friday night.

third time's a charm... this time I SWEAR I WONT TOUCH THE FUCKING OVERPRICED SHITTY FOOD.

I'm pretty disappointed with this line-up. What happened to MBV?
