Title: No More Heroes
Post by: Dissy on 21 Jan 2008, 15:50

I may be sold on this game, at least renting it.  A new Wii gami in which you play a bumbling computer geek who decides to become a hired assasin.  Through luck, you kill the number 11 assasin and take his place.  And your goal is to become number one.  I'm surprised that I missed it in the recent Nintendo Powers.

The only con I see is that it looks like Killer 7.  Not exactly my type of graphics.

I made a thread about this a while back but nobody posted in it so it just sort of languished. It's on the third page somewhere.

Anyway, I am buying this game! Partially because I want third parties to make good games for the Wii, and partially because I want more M-rated and action games on the Wii, so really this is an example of everything I want on the system. Therefore, I am voting with my wallet.

I wasn't a big fan of Killer 7. But anything this gonzo is worth a shot, for certain.

In the European version, enemies don't bleed blood. They bleed black oil and gold coins.

So basically, you play through a Dick Cheney wet dream.

I think the coins come out of the wounds in the American version too, but the blood is actually red.

The lack of attention for this game is very unfortunate.  There's such a potential for originality on the Wii and when something really interesting manages to emerge, nobody picks up on it. If something this weird doesn't sell well in Japan, it doesn't bode well for its reception by a North American audience.

Dude, have you looked at what PS1 games look like by modern standards? I mean, the PS1 was a landmark system but the graphics on those games have aged like shit. If you're telling me that No More Heroes looks like this:

Then you're basically out of your fucking mind. The graphics on No More Heroes aren't mindblowing, but they're on par with many PS2 games, which might not be the highest standard of visual quality the Wii can support, but whatever!

This game is great.

Whoever didn't like Killer7 is a facist.

Whoever waits for this to drop in price before buying it is a leech.

I will wait for it to hit the bargain bins, or buy it used, or rent it. I never buy Wii games full price.

Because being $10 less than the rest of the current gen is assholish and should not be bought at full price.

Eh, I don't have anything against the price itself, I wouldn't buy them if they were cheaper, I just haven't played a Wii game yet that provided the game time that I felt would be necessary to justify a full purchase. I already owned RE4 for the GC, and the minigame compilations in their many forms are best rented. For the Wii, I own Zelda (which I got with the Wii) which I have not played for more than 4 hours, Wii sports, which is the best game released for the system thus far, and Wario Ware, which I got from a friend and lasted me all of 2 days before the novelty wore off. Everything else is a rent. I'd have the same policy with my 360 as well, but in general that system has more games I'd rather own (Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc.) and for some reason nobody rents Wii games from our Blockbuster, and most 360 games are rented out quickly, unless they're something like Halo 3, which I'm not going to rent anyhow.

Good luck with that. Your chances of finding one are pretty nonexistent.

I work in a video game/music/movie/comic store, and we have been pretty much getting nonstop calls about this game. It seems pretty interesting. I may have to bring it home one day.

KvP: Zack & Wiki? The Godfather? Super Mario Galaxy?

Shit, man. Show some sack and let developers know you want them to make interesting games that utilize the full potential of an innovative platform.
Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: KvP on 24 Jan 2008, 23:02
I had already played The Godfather on the 360, and after a number of half-assed Ubisoft and EA ports to the Wii I decided I might as well skip it.

SMG, I rented until we beat it. Zack & Wiki, I have not heard of. I remember that it won some publication adventure gaming award over a game that I had played and liked, however.

Like I've said before, Nintendo doesn't make games that I'm interested in. I have a Wii because my brother wanted one and I bought it for him. He grew up around consoles and I didn't. I'm sort of waiting a few years until the required wiimotions are more specific and less general. I've seen the wiimote less as a revolutionary innovation and more as a new way to press A, B and C. It seems like in most cases a few hours of play time is all that's needed to discern what basic flick-of-the-wrist motions are necessary to play a game, and you can sit on the couch and control adequately. The exception to that is probably Wii Sports, which incidentally is still great fun when stoned. If my brother weren't attached to my Wii I'd probably sell it to my stoner friends, who seem so glum now that their Wii is broken. No More Heroes looks interesting but will probably be semi-coherent if visually ravishing, and I have no interest in SSMB whatsoever. And what's coming after that? Most likely, another first-party game.

Zack & Wiki is fantastic, and honestly The Godfather is the best on the Wii. It combines the mechanics of the other games with a control scheme that's an absolute blast. Tommy described it better than I ever could:

The Godfather
This is the best of the bunch so far, which isn't saying much. The actual gameplay itself is good fun. It's very familar to anyone who has played Grand Theft Auto but there's some nice mechanics thrown in. Plus the Wiimote is used very effectively for shooting and fighting. I especially like sneaking up behind people, throwing piano wire over their head and shaking the controls until they die. That sort of thing makes you glad to own a Wii. The game is very open-ended and you get a lot of choice on what you want to do, which is really fortunate because the adopted storyline is woeful beyond belief. It really shouldn't be associated with The Godfather franchise because the films are so incredible and there is too much to live up to. Rather than set this actually quite playable game in the Godfather universe, they tried to weave a character into the storyline of the first film. They did get the original voice-actors in and they all look the part but the dialogue they recorded is basically pap. They make some horrible changes to the narrative and after a while you start to genuinely dread having to play the storyline missions. Also, they clearly couldn't get the rights to Al Pacino, so the Michael character looks and sounds nothing like him. Why put him in at all then? As long as we are ruining the narrative to this extent, why not just cut the bastard out all together? However, like I said it plays well and the graphics are good for this console.

Al Pacino is too good to appear in games, and spends his time on things of substance like Gigli cameos. At least the replacement looks like he's Sonny's brother, unlike Pacino. Bob Duvall sounds fucking old.

I found the Godfather's storyline to be pretty okay, actually. I thought it was smart to have the PC "fill in the blanks" in the story, so to speak. The intended emotional payoff never comes, but the story retains the high-concept pulp feel of the first movie. They made some slight changes to how a few scenarios play out, but the results are mostly unchanged. The only important change seemed to be making the PC Michael's capo instead of the faceless character in the movies (who becomes more important in Part 2, but whatever) The dialogue wasn't great, though. I'm surprised they got Brando to say that shit.

Though, Shinobu is fucking hard. She was easy at first and then she pulled off this machine gun shit that made me die.

My copy arrived from Amazon two days earlier than I was expecting! I am going to crack it open after I get back from the midterm I'm taking in half an hour. Unfortunately, I probably won't play it much before I get Culdcept Saga, because I have to write a paper tomorrow.

This game is so far past ridiculous that it occasionally touches the other side - the boss death scenes are really bracing, for some reason. Still, utterly fantastic up to this point.

No More Heroes is a pretty good game... Since I don't like writing paragraphs, here is a pro and con list and a bit of comments.

Pros:
Arcade influenced sound effects are very nice.
The combat system feels unique and killing people never felt more satisfying.
The cutscenes are insane, because the characters are insane.

Cons:
The girl is annoying. The moments before a boss battle get real annoying- these can't be skipped either. Only applies if you dislike English with a slutty French accent.
There's no exploration, the game is really straightforward. Don't let that GTA style atmosphere in the previews fool you.
The music, although excellent gets repetitive after awhile.
The upgrades don't do anything except make your sword stronger or use less energy with a minor exception that I won't reveal for spoiler reasons.
The game is about 11 - 15 hours long.

Comments:
There are lots of secret attacks. The game is a lot funner knowing these moves, you might want to look them up before you start playing. Though the Con list is really long... the game is worth playing if you're really into artsy things because the game features unique chars and weapons and the art style and blah blah blah. The game didn't seem good enough for me to want to get every single thing and I don't think there's a reward for getting a gold ranking on every mission and whatnot. If you could select boss battles after you beat the game that would've been cool... because that's what the game is all about. I'm a big fan of the costume design by Okama (http://okama.nicomi.com/) so that . That website is Japanese, so if you can't read it, just click around randomly.

This was a pretty long review. Go play it

The fact that you only get one try at the free fight missions and then have to wait for them to come back is beyond stupid.  Putting all those 8 bit graphical elements in a wii game was, on the other hand a stroke of genius.

Post by: caseyyano on 13 Feb 2008, 20:56
ahh shit, that's right. Those free fight missions... I wonder if there's a prize for getting gold on all the missions.
I beat the game twice now. Apparently I missed some cards or whatever and I can buy more t-shirts (woo?) otherwise it's just getting gold on those free fight missions. I think I enjoyed all there is to enjoy; I'm not the type to do painful tasks to earn small rewards. I am lazy.

Oh, if any of you like dressing in pink, you can dress in pink in that game. However, it'll cost you quite a bit to look flamboyantly homosexual (or metrosexual, I guess).

However, I will say that the pink shirts are unilaterally awesome.

No More Heroes is...a video game.

I think that's the only way to describe it. It's a video game. It knows it's a video game and it embraces it. It loves it.
