Title: Acoustic... something
Post by: Krapitino on 27 Jan 2008, 03:25
I'm in the process of developing my musical tastes and knowledge, and I stumbled across the YouTube offerings of one Antoine Dufour: (an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu0FjmcJva8&feature=related)

Dang I like that stuff.  Anyone have any recommendations for artists with similar compositional styles and/or musicianship?  Performance video like above is a plus, too.

TIA.

There's a guy on that same record label who I love.  His name is Andy McKee and he is godly.

Behold. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pbSvsIVTwQ)

There are actually videos of Andy McKee playing in the same place as Antoine.  Stuff up that alley:  Justin King, Kaki King, Eric Mongrain, Jack Rose...there's actually quite a lot.  I've seen some random appalachians walk into my guitar center and start playing like that.  There's also this one guy.  Try a Pandora/Last.FM search on those guys, if you wanna find more.

If this thread goes much longer without mention of John Fahey I might almost get upset.

I'll put up Andy McKee's Art of Motion when I get home from work tonight.

I hate it when people call such excellently composed music for "elevator music".

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but I'm guessing the comment was referring to 'elevation music', not elevator. It's a Don Ross song, same as the one linked to above.

It's an hour to showtime with the Andy McKee Trio... I'm so psyched.

And thanks to you all for your suggestions.  Some really good listening there.

Q: What's the difference between a guitar composer and a songwriter?

A: Pretension!

I'm writing a piece for a modern dance work. I think that's composition, isn't it?

Oh God, this puts me in the same category as Malmsteen doesn't it? Will I have to buy an industrial-strength hair fan? Do I have to sell my wimpy acoustic guitar? Is my middle name going to be changed to "Fucking"?

It is entirely possible to have this level of guitar talent and still write great songs to go with it. I won't give any examples because you'll just sneer at them anyway.

Got a ring to it, frankly.
