Hey everyone. I'm a bit of a lurker (and rather like it that way), but I decided to register and start this thread because I don't hear much, if anything, about this band (Kings of Leon). I don't know if you all have heard of them and don't like them or you just haven't heard of them. The latter is something that is hard for me to believe as I got into indie music when I started reading this comic (when jeph started making this comic), and as such I get most of my musical advice from this very site and forum.
Anyway, I like these guys a lot and if you haven't heard of them you should think about giving them a listen. I have their albums, but they might be in dumb iTunes mp4 format or whatever so I will see what I can do about uploading them to the Mediafire thread. I can, however, provide a youtube link.

I don't really know how to describe them to you beyond the fact that they play instruments that are guitars, bass, and drums. And they aren't metal or hardcore or screamo. And they aren't super poppy either. I don't know. Just uh give them a listen? There are a couple of videos up on youtube of them.
P.S. If everyone knows this band I'm going to feel silly

I have one album, but I've never really gotten into most of their stuff.
Taper Jean Girl is a pretty good song, though.
-
Their newest album is kind of weak but Taper Jean Girl and Youth & Young Manhood are pretty solid I think.
-
I was never really impressed with this band or their "Southern Rock" Strokes aesthetic.
Still, if you like 'em, more power to you. You could do worse.
-
I don't know about in the rest of the world, but they're pretty mainstream over here. Not bad stuff altogether, though.
-
Well I am not surprised that they are pretty mainstream at least somewhere. I'd tentatively claim that there isn't too much to hate about them, and that they aren't doing anything thats too outrageous to turn people off to them. Just thought I'd see if people had heard/ wanted to hear about them.

I first heard Kings of Leon in my friends car after having a bit of Jack. It went really well with the whole atmosphere of things. So as soon as I got home I went on OiNK (R.I.P) and got the album 'Aha Shake Heartbreak'. They're definitely something fun to listen to every once in a while.
'Slow Night, So Long' is my favorite track. :-D

Are you kidding me?! Because of the Times is as solid as it gets.
-
I really liked Aha Shake Heartbreak. The new one, not so much.
-
This band hasn't really impressed me much, what songs I've heard. If anyone has recommendation to change my mind though, I'm open to them.
I always get them mixed up with Kings Of Convenience. Now there's a great band. Gorgeous, breezy, and poppy music. With Feist helping out a couple of times.
-
I think they're alright, but quite conventional. Like Interpol's less talented cousins, or something.
And they make videos that make drying paint look interesting:

KoL are a decent band. A few of my friends constantly obsess over them, so I was force fed all three albums. I enjoy Aha Shake Heartbreak the most, due to its rather catchy riffs. The new album is different, but not in an entirely good way. The slower tracks near the end (Trunk, Fans, Arizona) are alright. I watched them on TV via Austin City Limits, and they didn't seem to be very entertaining, especially when compared to crazy mo-fos like Ghostland Observatory.
-
...Is that possible? Less conventional than Interpol, I mean? They are probably the dullest band around these days.
Dull in what way? I think what you're seeing as "dull" I would call "understated". I mean, if you think Interpol is dull, I can only imagine what you think of The National or mid-era Arab Strap...
-
It's going to drive everyone mad but this band is pretty much exactly how the Red Hot Chili Peppers would sound if John Frusciate was in charge of the recording process. Think about it next time you hear them.
This is why I get so sad when I listen to them.
-
Aha Shake Heartbreak is a masterpiece, the other two are good, but the first is too garagey and riffish, the third is trying not to be.
The second (ASH) had that perfect balance of indie, us-against-the-world grandeur and crazy intensity.
-
While I wouldn't say Interpol is in any kind of upper echelon of bands I like, I do find it odd that you like The National but don't like at least the first Interpol album, since they're drawing from a similar source material.
What do you think of A Place to Bury Strangers? I finally got the album today and I am severely digging it, even though it pretty much blatantly rips off Jesus and Mary Chain, New Order, My Bloody Valentine, and many 80s goth-industrial bands.
ObOnTopic: This thread has led me to realise I don't actually hate Kings of Leon. I always thought I hated them, for some reason, but having checked them out I'm fairly sure I never even listened to them before. I had thought they were some kind of generic frat-jam-rock or something, when actually they remind me of a cross between Interpol and early Wilco. I'm not going to buy their albums, but they're actually not that bad.
-
The A Place To Bury Strangers album is good, but the downtempo numbers just don't seem to fit.
-
Agreeing with Zerodrone here. Thought I hated them, but I checked out some of their stuff, and well, its not bad. The vocals annoy me slightly though, but I suppose they could be a lot worse.
-
i really, really don't like the guys voice.
it ruins the entire band for me, if it wasn't for that then i'd probably quite like them.
-
APTBS is a good topic for this thread.
Interviewed Oliver from that band earlier this week. Smart gentleman, very articulate. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders. The article ought to be a good read.

That is amazingly close to my own view of them.

Well the video for Four Kicks is enjoyable I thought. It definitely isn't boring.
