Not even your evident musical talent can make this an even vaguely good song. What makes Johnny a musical genius is his astonishing abillity to make the worst songs FUN and he does this by reinventing them, and thats what a really good cover does it improves the song with its own creative interpretation. Certainly a worthy effort though, better than I could do in any lifetime. Just too much of an imitation.

(I have a secret for you: that's the only reason this exists, because it doesn't even come close, therefore lol)

I think it's cool, Patrick.

I like your singing voice.

I wouldn't have guessed you sang like that from your speaking voice! You got the 'badly' part right, it sounds too much like the original song. I'd have filled it with monotonous beeps and random acapella, change the rhythm every 12 seconds. Maybe throw in a hairdryer solo for good measure.

Daz, is that what your stuff sounds like?

This split will be amazing!

Well, not until now, as I don't know crap about timing, which is essential if you want a good hairdryer solo!

Post by: valley_parade on 01 Feb 2008, 05:32
The one time I attempted doing stuff with timing, it did not end well.

Then again, instead of being in say, 4/4 or 6/8, I went with "play a chord every thirty seconds".

Okay so needs moar hairdryer. Got it. Should I run large motors next to the pickups of my electric guitar with the distortion all the way up?

Yes. And rig the motor's speed to the envelope of the signal you're getting out of your guitar too.

Don't forget to add a really obscure instrument to your recording.  This is important.
Try the ondes Martenot, or maybe a sarussophone.

Post by: Liz on 01 Feb 2008, 08:27
What, the hairdryer won't be obscure enough?

Post by: KickThatBathProf on 01 Feb 2008, 08:29
Fair enough, but it couldn't hurt to have more obscure instruments.  Around five is optimal.

There has to be banging. Hit the flap of a VHS recorder a few times.

Needs a cowbell, a tambourine, and a ukulele.  It should also sound very twee.

[I really think it was a sick cover, though.  Props, man.]

Very Ted Leo.

I think he's gonna orgasm when he reads that.

Anyway, pretty cool cover.

I'd like to mark this post as the point where the thread stopped being completely serious and sincerity left the building.

Everything I said was entirely truthful and sincere.

In fact, everything I say is sincere

I'm saying that's where the sarcasm kicked in. I was deadly serious about how I would cover Mr Brightside. I'd completely change the chord structure too and only scream the lyrics.
...
...hmm...

What does is this word again?

It is so foreign to me

Johnny, don't get me wrong. You are awesome but no one can stop Flowers' lyrics from being so bland and unimaginative that they are painful to read let alone hear.

That said, well done both.

Oh FUCK YOU JC. Shane and I had just started collaborating for our cover before you posted that. No hairdryer though, so we've settled for Shane's various kitchen appliances. Thing is, he can't record his vocals until Tuesday.

Edit: I hadn't actually heard the song until you two had covered it. I'm not sure if Shane has either. So, it's based on Patrick's cover of the song.

I've heard it. But now I'm a little disheartened. Thanks Johnny. =(

Not only did you grab my cover by the ears and fuck it in the nostrils, you actually made me like the song. I HAVE NO REASON LEFT TO LIVE.

Guys, is this really the kind of competition we want to be having?

WHO ARE YOU.

So are you going to just have a random two minute long blender solo?

I re-enter the thread with what little dignity I have left to let you know that I was being serious. I could call myself on my mother's phone and use the sound of the cellphone signal coming through the amp to give me a sortof ambient morse-code sound.

The lack of overwhelming ambient noise in this one is because I finally bought a Goddamn condenser mic to plug into my laptop.

That would be bananas, milk, and yogurt. I was thinking that the sounds of it chewing up different objects and going on different speeds could make a really cool sound if you did it right.

I dunno. I have a feeling the ice would be a little too clunky.

That said, I'm also going to fry an egg and record the sound of that.

I just wanted to slip a little comment in here amid all of the cover making/contemplating:

Both of you did a very good job.  But I must say, Johnny you definitely made me like this song when I rather hated it before.  It just got promoted to my driving mix in fact.

And as I have no brilliant ideas for covers to contribute I will just sneak out now.  :)

I've always thought "It Ends Tonight" (All-American Rejects) could be better in different hands...

Then again, I didn't mind the original Mr. Brightside, and I actually liked the other two Hot Fuss singles.

...does having hated When You Were Young redeem me at all?

And as I have no brilliant ideas for covers to contribute I will just sneak out now.  :)

I started compiling a list the other day, throwing some ideas at a friend. I'm sortof at a dead lock between "Be True To Your School" by the Beach Boys and "Gone Country" by Alan Jackson.

If I had to vote I would say Be True to Your School.  I am guilty of loving the Beach Boys, but I will acknowledge that some of their music is rather bad.  Be True to Your School is one of those songs that I am not particularly fond of, so I would love to hear someone take it apart and make it rad.

May I suggest Girls Just Want To Have Fun and 1999.

Also, the only good thing the Killers have, and will ever record, is that cover of Shadowplay they did last year.
