Title: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: Inlander on 06 Feb 2008, 20:26
As per this thread:

http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,8627.0.html (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,8627.0.html)

It's been too long since we had a thread like this (though I think maybe it got revived a little while ago? I dunno). Personally I find it much more interesting to hear what people sound like, than to see what they look like. So say something to us, sing us a song, whatever - let us hear you!

I was just thinking of starting a thread like this, but I figured people wouldn't like the idea. So hooray for you!

I will find something to record and post again, methinks.

HULLO! (http://www.box.net/shared/zg0mz9uw48)

Maybe you have heard this (http://www.box.net/shared/b7hh6rjk8c) before, but I am posting it again. It was my big hit in the 80's! Pardon the noise, it was hot and we had to have a lot of fans on in the studio that day.

Dude I have a recording of me playing Between the Bars and was considering posting that. Oh well!

Maybe I'll come up with something later. I am tiny but I have kind of a weird voice, maybe. The lowest note I can hit is the D below middle C?

Ok well I have often thought that I had a passable voice so here I am singing something.  It now comes in just one part! (http://www.box.net/shared/escna76ok8)

So I am working on updating old recordings of my voice (songs and stuff), but I want to do something new for this. Two somethings, specifically, and at least one of them will be a song. All songs will be done a capella! I will work out some sort of accompaniment if I can. Somebody pick one! Choices are:

Readings will probably be monologues from Shakespeare, unless I can think of something better.

Objections?
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 07 Feb 2008, 02:01
Do Nightwish.

Also your reading should be a Shakespeare sonnet.

If I had the voice to pull it off I would rickroll all you motherfuckers. But my voice is shit, so I made fun of Darryl and did a short sample of the White Stripes.

I had different hair.
Huh.

(Maybe I will sing for you one time when I am drunkish. I am not a good singer.)

(Also whenever I watch that video I wince when I realise that I have a lisp.)

To be fair mate, you have a pretty cool voice.  It's incredibly North American.

Anyway, here is another recording. It's a story about Charlie, written by Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh.

EDIT: This particular recording is dedicated to Rizzo.

Edited for MP3 format.  This is all about equal opportunity aural harrasment.

If you have Audacity you create a karaoke track out of any a lot of songs. I could maybe make one for you if you want?

Also you have a lovely singing voice! I am jealous.

This is probably a good time to say "HEY ROO. I TOLD YOU SO."

Is it a bad thing that I kindof want to do another recording of me talking, but this time letting what remains of my Georgia accent show up? I'm debating. I may have an answer later tonight.

Do it. I'm planning on doing a standard "This is what I talk like, letting my vague bit of New England twang in" and one for how I tend to speak when doing recordings (For the purposes of what I sounded like on my college radio station).

Okay, I have done some recordings for you all. Here they be. And I know I recommended box.net, but it's being kind of a bitch right now so I used Mediafire instead. Whatever.

1) My normal speaking voice here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?awhhqdpvlka)

2) My "special occasion" speaking voice here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?4grfjdj0eee)

3) Singing voice here! (http://www.mediafire.com/?debmjpd1oux) If you are expecting something good you may be a bit disappointed.
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: Elizzybeth on 07 Feb 2008, 09:39
Misconception, I like your "special occasion" speaking voice, but I actually think I prefer your normal speaking voice--it's perhaps a little less... mellifluous?  But it's got more character.

Here (http://www.box.net/shared/udms4484kw) is my contribution. A couple of years ago, I wrote a very short song.  It happened to be at about the time when I started playing around with Audacity, so I recorded it in three parts: (1) a three-track section of the song with voice, harmony, and whistling; (2) 6 or 7 sped up, overlapping tracks of me reading from Machiavellli's "The Prince," somehow altered so as to sound nothing like decipherable human speech; (3) another voice / whistling section.

It would be slightly less embarassing if I had wasted less time on it.

Slick you sounded nothing like I thought you would, your voice is so...timid. Like, now in the shower picture your expression looks vaguely apologetic to me. "Oh, um, hullo, sorry about this, I thought it would be terribly funny but now I'm not so sure..."

Edit: Okay, I just finished downloading Audacity. What's this about being able to make any song karaoke? Because I've got some Alice in Chains and Derik and the Dominos that I want to sing along to.

Mmkay so I lied with that post, I discovered a fair number of songs this morning that Audacity can't karaoke-ify. But some work, so here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEjzdurnJhw) is a tutorial video so you can try it. Sometimes it just kinda muffles the voice, but that can help if you are fine with just singing over the original vocals.

I liked it. I just chose not to post because your giant ego is suffocating me. You should be modest, like Jon/Obsessions.

I would like to attempt to hi-jack this thread for selfish purposes. I want to program my computer and my iPod to feed me routine instructions throughout the day. Unfortunately, the voices on my computer are kinda lame and robotic sounding.

I want you guys to record yourselves giving me various helpful instructions to be played at various times during the day. Instructions such as 'Darryl, wake up and get out of bed!' 'Darryl, don't forget to eat breakfast', 'Darryl, stop being to lazy!' 'Darryl, it's time to start cooking dinner', 'Darryl, it's getting late, you should think about going to bed', 'Darryl, never give up!'. Use your imagination, what sort of instructions do you think I need to hear routinely?

Will any of you do this for me? I'd very much appreciate it.

Blue Kitty I love you now. Your post reminded me I had an old Logitech mike for my PS2 and lo and behold, it works.

I'll do better voice stuff later!

Edit: Joe .aup is the audacity format. For those using audacity, you have to export as wmv or mp3 to have it not be stupid aup stuff. Except mp3 is a pain in the ass cause they want you to download something else. Grrrr!

That's what I'm talking about!

It's quite easy to do though.

Step 1: go here. (http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/)

Step 2: Download the file for Audacity and extract and stuff.

Step 3: When you export an mp3 file, audacity will be all like, bitch wheres the LAME. When it asks, just go to where you downloaded the folder and open it and click the little LAME file.

Wasn't that fun?

Yeah. It's what Garage Band gives you instead of an mp3/m4a.

In iTunes, go under advanced and click "Convert Selection to AAC". That's what I did and it works.
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: jhocking on 07 Feb 2008, 20:21
Speaking of which, my computer didn't recognize your m4a files. Technically I could listen to any of the other filetypes people have used, it's just mp3 is most convenient. However, yours I couldn't play at all.
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: Lines on 07 Feb 2008, 20:25
Weird. I know other people's m4a's were being played in QuickTime instead of iTunes, but they all work for me. WAVs also go to QuickTime, but wma's won't work (as I'm not on a PC). I don't know why they won't work then, so I'll try to fix it.

EDIT: I don't know how else to convert it, but it says it's encoded with iTunes and QuickTime, if that makes a difference.
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: jhocking on 07 Feb 2008, 20:26
Probably just a codec thing. My computer actually did recognize the files enough to give them the icon for Windows Media Player, but there's an error when I double-click on them.

What are you recording in anyway? You've mentioned GarageBand a few times, but that's a silly tool to use for recording a voice track. Download audacity, it's free and available for OSX as well as Windows.

ADDITION: Oh wait now I remember what m4a is. That's the filetype Apple created for people to use instead of mp3 on Macs and iPods. So it may play in iTunes if I switch it to that instead of Windows Media Player, but again it's not a filetype that is widely used outside of Apple products. The same place you can tell iTunes to convert to AAC, you can also choose mp3.

And Patrick, man, I have about 14gb free at the moment. I got sick of hearing the 'YOUR HARD DISK IS ALMOST FULL' message and so I put half of m TV shows/movies onto disc. You're just being an ass. Don't tell people not to upload .wav files when YOU are the guy with the problem!

I have about 2.5GB left and every time I make a recording it's 400MB or so before I convert it to mp3. I understand that's my problem, but hey. I might not be the only one.

Aside from that, I have shit-slow internets and .wav files are freakin' huge, therefore taking forever to download even if I -did- have the disposable space for it.

Check it out, actual music at the start and at the end! Speaking of music, ask Valley_P for some awesome noise music by him, and you can even hear this crazy yap in the background!

Also, Slick, you are now the voice of Cheese Night down at the Club.

In this case, m4a is just AAC bundled up sneaky-like. It should be usable on your computer, as it is a new technology that is arguably better than mp3.
Also, why are people send-spacing? Box has worked much better for me than sendspace ever did. Just get a spam filter or something on your inbox, or use a dummy one.

I will think of something to say to all you wonderful people once I am feeling a little bit more awake and not so shy. I really hate recording my voice because I think I sound awful, so I often don't listen to it after it has been recorded and more often then not, it needs redoing because I got shy halfway through. I was thinking of making a video (because apparently I can do that in iMovie or something? I don't know, I haven't really tested out these things on either of my macs), but that would probably make me more embarrassed.

Ok (http://www.box.net/shared/ptkz7zchwk). I want to do another cover of a song that while being silly, is not as stupid as that one, so I am up to suggestions. But really...more people should do this!

This is me reading Cool Air (http://www.sendspace.com/file/wsbvth) by H.P. Lovecraft. In fact, I'm a bit of a Lovecraft nut really, so here is me again, reading The Music of Erich Zann (http://www.sendspace.com/file/57rzxm), by the same author, but that one's got music! Check it out, actual music at the start and at the end! Speaking of music, ask Valley_P for some awesome noise music by him, and you can even hear this crazy yap in the background.
Roddy, you have an amazing voice, totally surprisingly, even though I think we spoke once before. Either way, some of the voices of the people on this forum are almost intimidating!

I'm a bad reader, and on account of the fact that I can't find my metronome to give me a starting pitch, I read you My favorite poem. (http://www.box.net/shared/64iei9ickg)

My performance is bad, the microphone isn't great, and it's in .ogg, but I figured I'd share just the same. I'll sing a song for y'alls one of these days.

.ogg? How do you get a .ogg? (My comp doesn't recognize it, which is why I ask.)

.ogg is an open standard for multimedia, it's what my commie-loving open source audio recorder was automatically set to. I thought most players handled it, but I could be wrong. I transcoded it to .mp3 (http://www.box.net/shared/cajk4ja8gw) for you people who hate free things.

Hey everyone, here is another reading (http://www.box.net/shared/s7pup2kg0c) by me!

It is from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard which is one of the few plays that I actually like.

Maybe later I will do some Beckett.

MaiAda I am incredibly pleased to finally know how that is pronounced. My last guess would probably have been "My-ada", so I am glad you posted this before, you know, we were at a cocktail party or something and I had to introduce you to the king of the land or somesuch person. Man would that be embarrassing.

I am quite proud of myself, I understood a good bit of that!

My last guess would probably have been "My-ada"

I thought that's what it actually is, since that's how "mai" is pronounced in italian?
or is that also an arabic word?
Title: Re: Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
Post by: mooface on 18 Feb 2008, 01:16
"Maiada" is an Arabic name.
Since "mai" means "never" in Italian and "Ada" means happiness in Hebrew (I think?) my Italian relatives were horrified by my name at first because they thought my parents had named me "never happy".
Sooo... to answer your question, nope it's not supposed to be pronounced "my-ada" although most Italians pronounce it that way anyways.

Okay internets. Here is a silly lil' ditty I wrote two days ago. It's not really finished yet (so I am requesting that you only listen and not download) and I recorded every track in one take so it's far from perfect, there are some wrong chords lol and such, but I still like it a lot!
