i fun tool to see how your music taste matches up with the qc last.fm group:
http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/comparegroup.php?user=&group=questionable+content
My musical preference is 63.05% similar to the questionable content group. Musically, I fit in!
How well do you fit in? (http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/comparegroup.php?group=questionable+content)
the music difference cloud at the bottom is pretty interesting
-
Jesus fuck, I have a pulse and that's it. The rest of the world hates me or just thinks I should shut up. Shit, I think I should shut up. Fuck you for asking!
edit: NOT THAT I WANT THE PULSE
-
Holy fuck. 90.11%.
I guess I can stop thinking I'm better than all of you now.
-
51.7%, much higher than I was expecting. Oh, it's based on what things have been tagged as rather than matching artists. That makes more sense.
-
My musical preference is 91.64% similar to the questionable content group. Musically, I fit in!

Whoa, hahaha. Hello everyone!

23.2%
Do I win a prize?

-
61.68%
Apparently I fit in, guys!
Love me.
-
87.72
I fit in but the premise behind the script is pretty stupid. It should judge by artists.
-
70.34%
I agree, going by artists would be a far more accurate way of doing this.
-
50-something per cent, but the tags I got aren't exactly indicative of my musical taste at all, I think.
-
ouch. 90.56%
-
37%
-
90.96
I was kind of surprised that its so high.
-
90.47%.
Also I apparently listen to far more emo music than the group. I don't know how that happened.
-
Yeah, it's kind of silly that this judges based on tags, which can be given completely arbitrarily, many of which are quite dumb.
-
94.92% HOLY CRAP
-
Hmmm...
0%
About right, I figure.
-
89.46%
I wonder if it's counting all the old stuff I used to listen to, or just the data from the past six months like I have it set. Because a year ago, I listened to shite.
-
82.7% I'm actually kind of surprised. I thought it would be lower.
-
The script is crap for the sole reason that basically almost everything is tagged as "indie" or "alternative" and that's probably why so many people are getting such high scores.
-
hehe, 27.08%. Guess I don't fit in here. :-)
-
How come you all have an account already? When do you use it? Is it good?
Already? It's been around at least since summer of '06.
Yes, it's good for putting on a "radio station" that doesn't have commercials, will usually play songs you know and love, and sometimes play you something you've never heard before.
-
It's good if you want to show someone the internet what you listen to, and can't be bothered to explain it because they probably won't have heard of anything.
-
86.29% which is balls. tags don't mean shit!
-
76.48% for me. Yay?
-
im pretty sure this isn't a good thing 92.52%
-
73.89%
Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Kind of surprised it was that high, actually.
-
How come you all have an account already? When do you use it? Is it good?
It's also great for showing off how diverse and indie your taste in music is.
I guess you could call it a Challenge Pissing Enabler.
-
I like Last.fm for the event manager, so I can tell my friend in Chicago what shows to go to so that I may live vicariously through him since it is so very rare that good shows swing by my way.
-
I pretty much just installed it and let it go. Every now and again I like to look at the recommendations etc. (because I seem to have a fetish about finding new bands).
-

I don't think i've ever used the radio player. some of the stat toys are pretty cool
-
I use last.fm because in australia, we're not allowed pandora.
-
I use it to see what other people listen to and see if it sounds like anything I should look into and also because of the radio. And I hate the "So, what kind of music do you like?" question and now I can just go "This kind!" without confusion, as it doesn't make sense when you don't have a visual aid.
-
Already? It's been around at least since summer of '06.
I've been a member since 2004, back when audioscrobbler and last,fm were different websites. I joined for the stats, the recommendations and the networking.
-
70.something, But I'm definitely not into indie or jazz, which are my top 2 categories apparently? I almost downright hate jazz. I can't stand the awkward rhythm and instrumental solos.
-
I put my username in and I got an 85.53. Funny thing is, it's not my account. I don't even have an account. Mandatory Psycho-Freakout!
-
92.96%
Apparently I am not as much an individual as an abstract representation of a hive mind.
-
I can't stand the awkward rhythm and instrumental solos.
I, too, cannot stand when instruments play notes.
-
94.5%?
Guys, I think I broke the script. It's telling me that to be more similar, I should listen to less indie rock.
I didn't even think I listened to that much indie rock...
-
79.76% If I really wanted to fit in, I'd need to listen to less post-punk,rock, punk, experimental, and female vocalists. I'd also need to listen to more indie and indie-pop. Somehow, I don't see that happening anytime soon.
-
85.46%
oh wow.
-
I'm still fucking winning.
-
I blame post rock for the 10% you beat me by.
Oh, and people tagging fucking everything as alternative.
-
Oh, and people tagging fucking everything as alternative.
While that practice is stupid, I fail to see how it makes a difference.
-
The QC group listened to a lot of music tagged as alternative.
-
I can't stand the awkward rhythm and instrumental solos.
I, too, cannot stand when instruments play notes.
I'm sorry, I just can't get into jazz? I never played an instrument, and every band kid I know loves jazz so that probably has something do with it, I just don't have the musical appreciation for it. Well thats not true, I appreciate how well they can play their instruments and experiment with music but I just don't like ithe way it sounds.
-
Don't worry about it man, it's probably just subconscious racism.
-
And I must subconciously hate white people too because I don't like country very much.
-
So... Subconscious misanthropy? Or do you like mariachi music?
-
Does disliking Coldplay make you subconsciously a good person?
-
What if you are ambivalent toward Coldplay? Does that mean I am going to Purgatory when I die? Do they play Coldplay muzak in Purgatory?
-
Coldplay sounds a bit too edgy for purgatory. They'd probably be playing Keane.
-
This is a badly written script.
61.4%.
Meh.
-
I got 60.67%. It might be kinda accurate, but I don't think I have much of the music I actually like on there yet.
-
94.75%...wow. Apparently I need to listen to less experimental music and more classic rock to fit in even more. I'm on it!
-
How do you create a profile to run the script for?
-
Something like 70%, but reading the 'cloud' it was complete BS. Considering 'alternative' could take in virtually anything on my list that isn't pop or gangsta rap (the rap symbol was blatantly far too small on my screen). Apparently our main difference is 'indie rock,' somewhat hilariously.
So you have to have a Last.FM account for this to work?
How come you all have an account already? When do you use it? Is it good?
I use it constantly to record what I listen to becuase I find it fascinating to see what the differences and overlaps are between what I perceive as my favourite artists compared to what I apparently listen to most often (since mid-2005, at least).
-
The similarity between user gridgm and group questionable content is high, at
74.47%
...hmmm
-
0%, but thats obviously becuase i dont have a last.fm account or something.
or maybe its becuase i like Phish, The Dead and the Dave Matthews Band then smoke weed every night.
-
I almost downright hate jazz. I can't stand the awkward rhythm and instrumental solos.
I think you probably just hate free jazz--and that's a good thing, I don't think anyone in their right mind actually enjoys free jazz. My dad is a professional jazz musician, and he says the best way to get someone over their dislike of instrumental solos is to force them to listen to Miles Davis and Bill Evans. It worked for me, at least. -shrug-
-
0%, but thats obviously becuase i dont have a last.fm account or something.
or maybe its becuase i like Phish, The Dead and the Dave Matthews Band then smoke weed every night.
Wow, you're going to fit in well...
-
73.12%.
If you guys would listen to more singer-songwriter, folk, acoustic and alt-country, we'd get on much better.
Apparently.
-
86.44%
wow... it's interesting that the only difference is in my preferences: twee, folk, punk, shoegaze
:-)
-
0%, but thats obviously becuase i dont have a last.fm account or something.
or maybe its becuase i like Phish, The Dead and the Dave Matthews Band then smoke weed every night.
Wow, you're going to fit in well...
i love you?
my musical tastes really should have little impact on how much i fit in.
there are only 2 groups of people i make fun of when it comes to music Metal Heads and Emo kids... but i get shit all the time for liking Dave Matthews. i think metal is just noise and Emo kids are funny.
-
Pssh, listen to some of the tamer metal, then you will get it. Not that tame is a bad thing, I am just trying to make a layman's distinction between cookie monster vocals and super-distorted guitars and people singing with wailing guitars.
-
For some reason that made me think of baroness.
Baroness is awesome. Go listen to baroness.
/derail
-
Baroness (as well as a lot of other sludge) sure is awesome.
-
There should be a link on the soundweave blog if you don't have it.
-
Baroness (as well as a lot of other southern metal) sure is awesome.
fix'd
-
Both sludge bands I like are southern, what is the difference?
Not counting baroness in there, I don't listen to them much, I like what I hear though.
-
Does baroness count as sludge?
I thought sludge was more, like, hardcore?
-
Baroness is definitely sludge.
-
Good point... it is like sludge/atmospheric, or something. Doesn't have much in the way of lyrics, as I remember.
Again, I haven't heard the album that often, or that recently, so my recollection may be flawed.
-
Yeah, they're more along the atmospheric Isis/Cult of Luna side of sludge.
-
0%, but thats obviously becuase i dont have a last.fm account or something.
or maybe its becuase i like Phish, The Dead and the Dave Matthews Band then smoke weed every night.

Ha. You think so??
there are only 2 groups of people i make fun of when it comes to music Metal Heads and Emo kids... but i get shit all the time for liking Dave Matthews. i think metal is just noise and Emo kids are funny.
Oh 'only' 2? Congrats, that's an infinitely greater degree than I do.
Anyway, I was only pisstaking with my comment, although your response has less than endeared you to me - but man, it's not like my tastes fit in here. At least, not all of them. I like plenty of indie rock and all that shit. I just also like other things, shock horror.
-
Metal is just noise? Well, sure, lots of the more extreme subgenres will sound like noise to the untrained ear but I see no reason why power and heavy metal will sound like noise.
-
Methinks that person listened to the wrong kind to begin with, power and heavy would be best, like you said, though whenever I have to introduce someone to good metal, I start with Maiden, over any other bands.
-
28.72% - not too bad, but I am amazed by how much French music I listen to, since it was the second largest word on the visual spread of my taste - cheers?
-

well, metal never did anything for me. it hurts my ears, ive tried. i agree that some of the "tamer" stuff isnt terrible. but some of the hardcore crank up the distortion makes me feel bad inside. its probably becuase i like hearing clean guitars and have the bass be sublte. so i dont understand people who listen to metal and go "man this is amazing music" it just boggles my mind. i dont really make fun of them for liking it though, i mean the guys who wear spikes i think are funny. of course i also think frat boys are funny, guys with mowhawks, tight pants, baggy pants, pot smokers at Phish concerts (RIP Phish), drunk 25 year olds at Eagles concerts (WTF?) this guy who consistently needs to meet his friends in the front row. oh and Bow and Luke Duke from the Dukes of hazard.
Basically, a band that really gets me going is somebody like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Not just because they are a 'jam band' but the fact that everybody in that band has more talent on thier finger than i do in my body. thats the music i appreciate a lot. im not so into the indy thing that seems to be on these boards, but thats more to lack of exposure than taste though. generally speaking, illl enjoy everything. except metal, it just wont happen.
-
Could you name any of the bands you dislike?
I don't know why I like metal, it just feels right. And as we all know, any way it feels right.
-
Van, if there's one mistake I see newbies make on these forums all the time, it's thinking that we are one cohesive body.
Which may be sort of silly if you notice what thread I'm posting this in, but hardly any of us fit the "indie snob" stereotype that lots of newbies think we fit.
-
This is off because most of what's on my last.fm is music I don't like enough to actually buy, but 94.03% D:
-
lol, oh im sure there are plenty of people here who like what i like, just like there are plenty of people who dont.
i was referencing somebody's comment to me.
but that said, honestly i know enough about genres, except Metal, Emo and contemporary indy stuff. actually, im interested to see what bands are out there to listen to. always looking for inspiration.
FIND SOME INSPIRATION! WAY DOWN DEEP INSIDE OF YOU!
-
24.14%.
SO CLOSE. I'll listen to heaps more doom metal and then I should beat Khar.
-

I thought that for a while too, but I lurked a lot before I started posting. Then I only posted maybe twenty-five posts in the first couple weeks. Kept me to less than the normal amount of foot-in-mouth moments. Remember, kids, Einstein says that keeping your mouth shut is the key to success. That and depriving yourself of sleep.

I'm going to ignore your first paragraph, because you made the point that it was just your opinion of metal rather than the all-too-common 'x genre is shit,' and because of your charming list of people you make fun of.
However - you are making so many presumptions in this paragraph, even assuming that someone is going to sneer at a supposed jam band, whatever the hell that's about - plenty of bands jam. Lurk for longer. You'll enjoy everything, eh - does that mean you'll also enjoy everything I like? Including gangsta rap, hardcore punk, pop-punk, pop, trip-hop, alt-rock, country, psychedelia, prog-rock - I could go on. What so many people perceive as the 'everything' on this board, is by far not the everything.
As for your reasons for liking the Flectkones - more talent in their little finger, eh. Then you should at least respect metal bands. Most of them boast extraordinarily (well, less so these days) talented guitarists and drummers, and many more have great vocalists too.
-
At this point the voices instruct me to post an Arcturus song.

Indeed. The most technical drummers are metal drummers, aren't they?
Anyways, whenever someone says they like 'everything' I make them listen to a bit of speedcore, noise, drone and some free jazz (if I have any at the time). Normally the person doesn't like any of them.

Hate it when people say that. Typically it means "I like everything as long as it's really accessible and bland"
-
People also tend to say that when they want to 'fit in'. If they say they like everything then they are guaranteed not to clash genres with the other people.
-
But in front of big music fans they will just look stupid.

yeah i do presume. it happens im young what can i do? not? probably. whatever. too many stupid people i know who bash others for musical taste, im probably to defensive for my own good.
oh i know some metal bands have talent. i mean look at Danny Carey and Bill Ward. I can respect what they do with drums, but im not into heavy distortion on guitar. I mean Wylde, Vai and Morello do blow me away.
EDIT: nvm

I heard an interesting idea for an algorithm that compares similarity of taste. It was pertaining to 'Recommendation' algorithms on things like Amazon but it still applies.
Basically a neural network approach where the they don't look at just any sort of tags or whatever, but rather just look for subgroups of people which tend to like a lot of the same things. The beauty of this approach is you wouldn't rely on any classification you make up, the middle layer of neurons is basically a 'black box' which only looks at the data and finds the constants that are most predictive of observed result.
Yeah, the classification 'alternative' has been meaningless ever since alternative went mainstream.

I recommend you read this paper: Analysis of Recommender Systems’ Algorithms (http://macedonia.uom.gr/~mans/papiria/hercma2003.pdf).

47.9% for me, but I've also haven't used last.fm for awhile because my sister was using my last.fm player to find country music and was messing up my stats. Haha.
-
93.12%
This worries me somewhat.
-
Wow, mine has gone up 9%. I think we can blame that on the amounts of neutral milk hotel I have been listening to.
-
74.13%
did not expect that at all.
-
Why does this thread still exist?
Why why why?
-
I was thinking the same thing and I started it
-
Does it matter? I mean, just because everybody else keeps trying to kill threads doesn't mean you have to jump on the bandwagon too.
The thread is still alive because people obviously see some value in it and like to contribute - which means theres a point to having it here. When people no longer see any value in it and stop contributing, then it will die naturally and there's no need to 'kill it'.
