So I'm feeling rather mopey right now, having to do with the accumulated stress of school, the feeling that I've been born about a decade and a half too late, an Office of Student Life whose director is at odds with the best local band in town, etc. etc. etc. This forum is not LiveJournal, so let's get on with it.
I'm mopey, but too angry to listen to Belle and Sebastian. Thus, I need loud, somewhat mopey yet angry music to listen to. Any suggestions? Right now, I have Silkworm's "In The West", Burning Airlines' "Identikit" and Archers of Loaf's "Vee Vee" in heavy rotation, if that gives you some clue to what I'm looking for.
-
Shit man, just go listen to some post-metal. I don't think it's like any of the shit you mentioned, but it's loud and heavy.
Specifically Australasia by Pelican (that album is far more uplifting than I remember). Or go listen to Blessed are the Bonds by The Pax Cecilia. Good stuff.
-
cesium 137?

Sludge is hardly mopey.

SRSLY

okay, i need that album really badly.
also anything else weezer has ever produced.
maybe sunny day real estate, but it's still a bit mellow.
anything off in utero.
isn't this the entire grunge movement? and the entire post-hardcore/early emo thing, as well?
-
Lightning Bolt is the best. I hardly listen to them, but one time when I was feeling frustrated and angry, I listened to Wonderful Rainbow twice. In a row.

In Utero? That's definitely the first album that comes to mind, lol. Maybe 'You're Living All Over Me' by Dinosaur Jr.

These are the first three that popped into my mind after Pinkerton. I am kind of an expert at this music due to the extraordinary amount of repressed anger and sadness that I have been keeping inside me for nearly twenty years.
-
How about some post-hardcore?
-
Circle Takes The Square, dudes.
I'm uploading As The Roots Undo for ye olde Mediafire thread right now.
-
Pinkerton = old news. Plus, my angst isn't driven by girls, I've been doing well in that dept. for over a year now.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check them out later.
-
the extraordinary amount of sexual frustration that I have been keeping inside me for nearly twenty years.
Hm, I thought I'd managed to keep this largely repressed beneath the repression. Oh wait, I talk about it all the time.
None of those three albums are girl-specific. The Okkervil River one is about a girl, kind of, but the fact is that all three are great loud records to shout along to when you're bummed out.
If that isn't what you're looking for I guess you could always go listen to some early punk bands. Wire, Television, you know. They were bummed out about stuff and they generally responded by yelling a lot or playing guitars real loud. Alternatively, you could try listening to a lot of CCR and just not worry about anything else ever again. This works surprisingly well.

Pinkerton = still great

I have (and love) Yank Crime, In On The Killtaker, and 13-pt. Plan... Hmm, maybe the Nation of Ulysses is what I need. I don't have (but should get) Wrong, Gentlemen, and Raw Power, and I can't stand the Blood Bros.
And yes, Pinkerton is an option (and yes, still great), so I might give it a listen later.

being unforgivably macho.
-
Ahh. Missing the mopey. Although if I'm in a bad mood, and annoyed at the fact of being in a bad mood, I generally allow myself to listen to some meathead metal.
The Land of Rape and Honey is good for that, but I don't know people's feelings about Ministry.
-
Is that the specific sell-by-date on records now?
If Pinkerton were a young woman, she would be too old to participate in child beauty pageants. If it were scotch, it would likely have been consumed already. If it were a dog, its owners would be studiously avoiding any media related to Old Yeller. If it was a user on this forum, it would know its own music and lyrics by heart.
Is there some reason Pantera won't suit this purpose?
Because as of yet the OP hasn't violated the Geneva convention?
Seriously. Please keep setting these jokes up, people.

A fair point, but this is, after all, a new user. And since when did knowing something by heart make it any less comforting? For me, Pinkerton is one of the most comforting albums BECAUSE I know it so well. It's like sleeping in your own bed.

Pinkerton is never old news. Girl trouble or not, belting out every song on that album makes me happy and comfy regardless of the situation.
hmmm I wonder if there's anyone on this board that was on the Weezer boards back when they were fun.
-
I was otherrealchris on the old weezer boards. God, those times were fucking terrible. Low GPAs, pining over girls I would never meet, board assholes continually ostracizing me, BuddyHolliday... Well, I'm glad that's over.
When I first got Pinkerton, I love love loved it to death. I haven't really played it in a while because I don't really listen to Weezer as much as I used to, but I'll be sure to give it a spin later today.
Ah, memories.
-
We've snuck "El Scorcho" into our last two sets. Turns out it's a real barn-burner.

Do you mean before the Make Believe overhaul? I was on there - as, shockingly, DynamiteKid - from about 2003 until the revamp.
Honestly, it was the most pretentious, elitist pile of shit of a board I've ever been on, but it held a place in my heart nontheless.
-
Australasia is good music if I want to improve my mood. It's so...uplifting.
I like Weakling, Dead as Dreams, Joy Division (probably Unknown Pleasures, specifically "New Dawn Fades") or maybe Neil Perry's discography. Also, Buried Inside and Kylesa (at least the latter's first, self-titled, album) are pretty good hardcore/metal bands. And Acedia, who were a local band when I was in Highschool.

You all suck, you know that, right?
-
I have been avoiding this thread because I don't want to suck! But I really do have to say, that despite some TERRIBLE suggestions, The Afghan Whigs "Gentlemen" is pretty much the exact album that the original poster is looking for. I pretty much refuse to listen to anything else when I am "mopey and angry". I can still feel bits inside me skipping and jumping around when I play that album. It's like my internal organs are each trying to rock the fuck out.

Let's see....angry and mopey. First thing that comes to mind is "Thirteenth Step," A Perfect Circle. Maynard always works for me. I would say any Elliott Smith, but I don't know that you can categorize him as loud. Definitely mopey though.
-
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luFCBdS5PAs)
Why did anyone post after this?
-
Sure burzum is great for atmosphere but there are other BM acts greater for angry/mopey, such as dimmu borgir or cradle of filth.
-
Seriously? I think Burzum are woeful myself but they seem to fit the bill far better than Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth who I'd say were a trifle too overblown for the purpose.
-
Damn, guess I gotta try harder to make the elitist sarcasm more evident to people who aren't black metal freaks like me...
I would never suggest anyone listens to dimmu borgir or cradle of filth, under any circumstances whatsoever...I would however suggest aakon keetreh and amaka hahina (a bit, uh, wierd maybe though) bethlehem (great black/doom), nehemah, cold, and mortifera. Lunar Aurora and the Falls of Rauros are great, too, if you can find their stuff.
Or you can just listen to burzum (that said, burzum tributes are nice...I find sombre presage pull it off very well....)
-
Problem with that is that there are plenty of people who love black metal and enjoy some early Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. Not everyone that loves BM is an elitist.
-
Yeah, but the whole point is it was an elitist joke. I do occasionally enjoy early dimmu borgir, as well. But its not like a BM fan would suggest CoF and Dimmu as mopey and angry, at least in my opinion.
Aakon Keetreh IS really good, though. I recommend it.
-
I actually watched the Burzum video last night, I somehow found it enjoyable.
In any case, I'm over the mopey part of the mood, but I'm still plenty pissed, as well as downloading Gentlemen. Keep 'em coming!
-
no matter what anyone says, the best music for moody angry emotions is real chicago "all alone in the world sippin a scotch in a dark corner of a bar" blues
-
Like I'm going to find an Aakon Keetreh video on youtube.
-
The Arcade Fire are pretty screamy and metal, right?
What about Arovane?
Oh man, Appleseed Cast! Perfect!
-
I've noticed a lot of very strange suggestions in this thread, which leads me to assume that people ignored the examples set by the original post. To break this trend, I'm suggesting Ten Grand.
There were a post hardcore outfit that sadly dissolved in 2003 after the death of Matt Davis, the frontman of the group. The man's voice was epic, crazy, intense. At times, he sounded like his throat was about to burst from the output. Originally known as The VidaBlue, they were made to sell the name to a Phish side project for a sum of money, which hopefully, amounted to at least ten grand.
They put out two flawless albums while they were known as Ten Grand, "The Comprehensive List Of Anyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong To Us" and "This Is The Way To Rule", as well as 5000 different splits, EPs and singles that are more or less impossible to track down.
You might not have heard of him, but the death of Matt Davis was definitely one of the more tragic ones I care to name when it comes to musicians taken in their prime.
It would seem that nobody in the youtube community saw fit to take a recording of this band when they were around, good luck tracking down some material.
-
Dude man, Squarepusher is my go-to every time I'm feeling down and out. I want to fuck you in my hot red car yeah!
-
Like I'm going to find an Aakon Keetreh video on youtube.
Like your going to find an aakon Keetreh video.
-
Originally known as The VidaBlue,
THIS made me track it down.
I've always liked The Vida Blue. There are plenty of tribute profiles on myspace! Excellent recommendation, mopey and angry is exactly what I'd characterize it as. I think I gotta go buy this actually..
-
They were the ultimate band for catharsis as far as this poster is concerned. Those 'angry' days where you just want to call out in desperation are just about the only time I will ever listen to those albums, as they have the power to turn me from a bright and cheerful guy into a complete and total nihilist in minutes.
What's more, I do believe the Ten Grand albums are still available from the Southern Records store!
-
Autolux- Sub zero Fun. Its practically about moping.
-
Angry and mopey? How about Shiner's "Lula Divinia" (This album is like answering "c" on a multiple choice test. Throw it out there to any music request and you're probably right. Seriously though- buy it and play it - a lot).

I imagine most of the entire http://www.deepelm.com/ (http://www.deepelm.com/) deep elm catalog was made for this very reason...could be wrong
-
You're definitely wrong. Seven Storey Mountain, Cross My Heart, Red Animal War, Camber, Five Eight (well, one good song ever but it was a cracker) and even Brandtson had their moments but they were all patchy, and for the most part Deep Elm was a very bad label. Hell, they signed Fightstar, that should tell you something. I don't think they have a single good band left these days.
Nice choice of records there though. Which Planes is that though, is it the Fucking Fight EP? I can't read the title.

Knife in the Marathon is that one- on the deep elm tip I would argue that Planes Mistaken for stars and the Blacktop Cadence were the only choice albums they released -that scene/label is not my scene at all however I find that people that one quasi angry mopey music usually have about half that catalog-Patchy yes very but on the recommendation of appleseed cast earlier I thought that might be the direction the lad wanted to head..but I agree that you could take the entire label and distill it into about three comps of choice cuts...
for the record when I feel angry and mopey this one always does the trick:
But that probably says more about the fractured nature of my mopey-ness then a general recommendation over all
-
I'm pretty sure Blacktop Cadence only had a track on one of the emo diaries, the album was somebody else and then reissued by No Idea I think. They only released Chemistry For Changing Times didn't they? If not I'll be very annoyed that I've been missing out, that album's great. As is This Heat, Deceit is a fantastic album.

I believe you are correct-seems every decent band deep elm snagged did a track or an EP and then split for better pastures

Red Animal War's "Breaking in an Angel" and Seven Storey's "Dividing By Zero" are brilliant. Camber has some interesting guitar playing, but that dude's voice can be a bit much. As for Brandtson, I made the mistake of buying "Letterbox" on the strength of hearing one song off a later album -blech. All in all, definitely a label that needs a little quality control. Sure, indie labels should try to refrain from restraining artists, but c'mon.
EDIT: On topic- I would definitely also go with Traindodge's "On a Lake of Dead Trees" for moody/angry rock. Their later stuff is great, too.
-
Does this count as angry and/or mopey? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCygnfL0hww)

Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.
It's like a breakdown in the time-span of an album.

It can be Pantera time nao? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eun24RZRJTM)
Seriously, if you're just pissed, get some Pantera, Alice in Chains, The Who (yes, The Who), Black Flag, or Slayer, and start kickin' out the jams. 5 Minutes Alone is, quite possibly, the single greatest song for anger therapy in the existence of the world.
-
Man, I've been over this mood ever since like the third day or so after I posted this thread.
Feel free to keep discussing this though, I'm sure there's some other mopey person who still wants to get his rage on.
-
Also, "Hush" by Tool from Opiate before they started writing faggy 9-minute epics.
All together now-
FUCK YOUUUUUUUUU
Oh yeah.
-
I loled at the person who thinks that Demon Burger and Cradle of Crap are BM. not even close. maybe they're close to a bowel movement, but hey, to each his own.
I third Shellac, though I'm more of a Jesus Lizard fan, personally.
for feeling mopey and angry, Mogwai - Like Herod fits for me a lot of the time. not many other tracks off of Young Team fit the bill.
when I'm feeling angry and mopey, I generally put on ATDI - Relationship of Command.
I'm all for the D-Plan.
-
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Mclusky in here yet.
-
...the feeling that I've been born about a decade and a half too late...
If your profile is accurate, I've got that decade and a half that you're looking for, and strangely enough, when I was younger I always felt like I was born about ten years too late. Don't be in a hurry to get to your mid thirties because they suck.
Regardless: The perfect angry music is found on this album
(http://www.interpunk.com/itemimages2/37998.jpg)
Breakdown's Sick People is a freaking masterpiece of late 80s NY Hardcore. Actually, almost everything on there is good. This album was the soundtrack to my late teenage years, and I still listen to it today when I'm pissed off. I know it's not even close to what you were originally asking for, but I'm telling you...you can't be mopey when listening to Revelation Records. You can be angry, but not mopey.
-
"Ný batterí" - Sigur Rós
And a bunch of Modest Mouse for good measure
-
Man, old Rise Against. That's what I used to do.
-
stuff about deep elm
Ouch, I used to love Deep Elm. But then I was very mopey. Still, Appleseed Cast, Benton Falls, Brandtson, Camber, Clair De Lune, Cross My Heart, Desert City Soundtrack, Free Diamonds, Hundred Hands, Last Days Of April, Latterman, Lock And Key, Logh, Planes, Red Animal War, Settlefish, Slowride, Small Arms Dealer, Surrounded, and The White Octave all put out at records on DE that were at the very least entertaining, and a number of them I'd call greats. As a label though, yeah not that good. They seem to be haemorraghing money and blaming it on piracy these days. Also the Fightstar thing. I remember they shut down their forums soon after signing them, because 90% of threads were about how the label sucked now.
On topic, uh Converge, Drive Like Jehu, Jetplane Landing, Modern Life Is War... More angry than mopey, I guess. Loud though.
-
It surprises me that no one mentioned Cursive in this whole thread. Particularly The Ugly Organ.
-
Did I mention 'Gold Against The Soul' by Manic Street Preachers yet? Because goddamn.
-
Domestica makes the Ugly Organ look a bit rubbish to be honest.
-
Domestica is actually one of my least favorite albums by Cursive. I'm not sure why. Sonically speaking, The Ugly Organ is a lot more fleshed out, what with the horns and strings and stuff. Maybe Domestica hasn't grown on me like their other albums.
-
Lyrically, and conceptually, I don't think Tim Kasher has come close to what he achieved with Domestica. Though the last two cursive albums just got better and better in terms of music, they don't have the same narrative flow that makes Domestica so great. The imagery on that album is incredibly powerful and I'll be surprised if Tim Kasher writes lyrics that great ever again.
-
I will agree with you about that, though.
-
It surprises me that no one mentioned Cursive in this whole thread. Particularly The Ugly Organ.
Point. Cursive are kind of my default band for such moods. And most other moods, too...
The Ugly Organ is kind of poppier, in the most liberal sense of the word. Mostly, all of their albums are pockets of awesome.
Also:
Did I mention 'Gold Against The Soul' by Manic Street Preachers yet? Because goddamn.
But...but...The Holy Bible!
-
I loled at the person who thinks that Demon Burger and Cradle of Crap are BM. not even close. maybe they're close to a bowel movement, but hey, to each his own.
I loled at the fact that you think when a band becomes popular, they no longer fit their genres, despite them changing very very little about their music.
Dimmu Borgir is still black metal, and just like always, they still have a keyboardist, and they still do a lot of symphonic stuff, this may or may not be "TROO" to the "roots" of black metal, but its an arbitrary designation. Just because they have money to HIRE A PRODUCER doesn't remove them from the genre.
Cradle, while I think that the majority of their fans (in the states, I dont know about europe or anywhere else) are idiots, they pretty much make the same music they have ever made. Again, having enough money to hire a good producer does not remove them from the genre.
-
Also:

But...but...The Holy Bible!
I know your average MSP fan would crucify me for this but... I FAR prefer GATS. Whole swathes of Holy Bible just sound trite and flat to me (relatively). Gold is flawless from first to last note.
Seriously, I'd barely place it halfway if I was ranking Manics albums (Bible). Dunno why. 'part from a few songs which are of course excellent, it just never struck a chord with me as a whole CD.
-
I know where you're coming from - I'm one of those who hold THB sacred largely because of the time-period in which I listened to it - though I think a lot of the songs on it are excellent - GATS also rates incredibly highly, though, mostly for the reasons you stated.
Also, if it weren't for the title track and bloody Design for Life, Everything Must Go was pretty awesome, too...
I think I just prefer The Holy Bible for full on angsting out. It reminds me of being 15 again.
-
Yeah don't get me wrong when I'm having an angsty moment Bible is as cathartic as any of their work. Just musically it doesn't stand up throughout when I'm in a better mood. Having said that, I am horribly obsessed with the band so it's not like I'm slating the album at all, just not their best - halfway up my list of favourite Manics albums is still doing pretty well in my favourites of all time.
-

sorry to pop your bubble there, but their popularity has nothing to do with it. hiring a producer that does a bad job, is the problem. regardless, I'm not going to have some long winded argument about what makes or doesn't make a particular band a particular sub-genre. it's stupid. I've said my part.
-
Yo gentleman is not an answer to this thread, that record is all about making other people suffer because you're a shallow asshole who loves sex, not being mopey and angry.

sorry to pop your bubble there, but their popularity has nothing to do with it. hiring a producer that does a bad job, is the problem. regardless, I'm not going to have some long winded argument about what makes or doesn't make a particular band a particular sub-genre. it's stupid. I've said my part.
Well yeah, it is usually pretty difficult to string an ad hominem argument out for more than a sentence or two.

This thread is seriously lacking in the Pink Floyd department, holy crap. It's music I listen to when I am angry or depressed for when I want to feel even MORE angry and depressed.
Also, 'Mars, the bringer of war' by Gustav Hölst is a grade-AAAA song for tearing skulls off of people. Aptly named.
