Title: I need some New music and i'm up for anything
Post by: TheOrangeNova on 13 Feb 2008, 00:44
Seriously, My MP3 player has had the same 172 songs on it for the past 3 months.

I can listen to anything and everything as long as it Has more then 3 bars of music repeated.
(Also Hoping this is the right place for this, because it's Near 4am and I am no where near thinking straight..)

Arab Strap - They wrote love songs that actually sound like real life. Dirty and miserable.
The Ergs - Best pop-punk in years.
His Hero Is Gone - They sound like the end of the world.
Skepta - Greatest grime mc out there.

What I would do is a Google search of the name of any artist that catches your attention, so you might be able to figure out if it's worth your time.  Don't leave those decisions up to us.

A Place to Bury Strangers - (self-titled) - it is a new, slightly post-punk slightly shoegazing album that is pretty agreeable

Maserati - Inventions For The New Season - kind of like Pink Floyd meets Mogwai (kind of)

Ghost - In Stormy Nights - very interesting mixture of post-rock-ish techniques to produce an enjoyable listen

----

And if you are feeling a touch nerdy or sentimental:

Murray Gold - Doctor Who OST - it has a pleasant array of beautiful songs AND it has a touch of nostalgia - haha

Go listen to Agalloch, Envy, El Ten Eleven, and Yndi Halda.

They're all post-rock bands, but approach the genre in completely different ways.

GO FORTH AND LISTEN!

Never

Go listen to Insomniac Doze right now. That album is fucking hardcore based post-rock.

Agalloch was a legitimate complaint. They are more black metal/folk than post-rock. This, however, is just nonsense.
Title: Re: I need some New music and i'm up for anything
Post by: Spluff on 16 Feb 2008, 18:25
Post-rock is a pretty retarded genre anyway. There's not much point arguing whether bands fit into a genre that has pretty much no definition anyway.

The only genre that makes less sense is post-metal.

The World/Infero Friendship Society - A ska/gypsy punk band. Insanely fun and clever band, they have such high energy and every album is unique. I reccomend their newest album Addicted to Bad Ideas: Peter Lorre's Twentieth Century first.

Ween - Probably the funniest band in the world. They're incredible musicians that cover a lot of styles. Their earlier stuff is more silly and druggy whilst their later material is poppier and more "mature," so I guess that it would be better for newcomers to try one of their newer albums. Get White Pepper to start with, but if you're looking for something better and more "challening" to listen to, then get The Pod. It's one of the weirdest and best albums I've ever heard.

Tim Buckley - Forget his son; THIS man is where it's at. He has a fantastic voice, and has put out fantastic pop and avant-garde records. Listen to Happy Sad before you delve deeper into his discography.

Joy Division - Who doesn't listen to Joy Division? My parents, but that's besides the point. A simply fantastic post-punk group, who created a dark, atmospheric sound I have yet to hear replicated by any other group. Just download their entire discography; it's all brilliant.

Okkervil River - A alt-country/folk rock group from Texas who keep my faith in the genre alive. Will Sheff is one of the best songwriter's alive today I think, and the music beautifully accompanies his desperate lyrics. Down the River of Golden Dreams is the best place to start with this wonderful band.

I'm going to take this opportunity to recommend the American Music Club. They went on hiatus for the longest time, but they're active again now. Infact, they're due another album out this year!
Mark Eitzel is a truly fantastic songwriter and many of his songs have genuine moved me to tears. AMC made some truly beautiful music, but also put out a few that, while not awful, were somewhat difficult. So, I'm going to suggest starting at the most accessible album, and my personal favourite, "Love Songs For Patriots". Dark, depressing, but triumphant sounding. You used to be able to download the album in it's entirety from their American Music Club website, but it recently had a re-design and I'm not sure. Once you have a taste, try listening to the much more challenging albums "California" and "Everclear". So many people who try to listen to this band start in the wrong place and decide they're unlistenable, which is a real shame.

Everclear really isn't a difficult album to listen to. There's just a lack of hooks. And it is a great album.

I have never gotten the whole post-genre thing anyway. I mean, what, do you mail tapes or what is this about

This might be the single funniest thing I've ever read on these forums.

Anyways as far as random recommendations go:

The Dismemberment Plan--->start with "Emergency & I"
The Thermals--->start with "More Parts Per Million"
Silkworm--->Start with "Firewater"
The Mountain Goats--->Start with "All Hail West Texas"

...and that's that. Four of my favorite and most listened to bands.

Kings of Leon - Southern-rock-a-billy-ish. Now they're on that stupid car commercial where they drive to LA.
Ugly Casanova - Modest Mouse before Modest Mouse
Cap'n Jazz - Scream-y. Gibberish like At The Drive-In. Something to do with the guy from Promise Ring.

I like Horse the Band--how bad is that?

If you don't mind music associated with the whole 'goth' scene, I'd recomend middle or late period Swans.  Children of God is good, as is the Great Annihilator, and unlike White Light From the Mouth of Infinity or Omniscience (probably my favorite, and it's a live album for God's sake) you can actually find them.

Their early work is only for those that like horribly dissonant chords strummed over and over again while Michael Gira sings songs with titles like "Raping a Slave."
There was a thread about them a while back.

Emily Jane White - Melodic type of blues/folk. Dark Undercoat is her most recent work, so I'd start there and work backwards.
The Whitsundays - Psychedelic and a bit of an off-shoot of what spy movie music would sound like.
The Weather Underground - Southern Rock with a California style.

Those are some that come to mind at the moment. Um... go everyone else for the bands they mentioned. HORSE the Band is great. Enter Shikari is also up there.

woah woah woah, when were Swans ever associated with the goth scene?

Also, Soundtracks for the Blind is the best Swans album. Get it and the Cop/Young God/Money EP collection. White Light From The Mouth of Infinity is also great.

Not bad at all. Horse the Band are fun! Enter Shikari on the other hand is what happens when you take the fake emo-scene and mixes it with stupid synths and stroboscope lights = shit.

Objects inside Clouds> If you play the guilty pleasure card, you're out for two rounds and once you get back you have to move to the "Revisit My Taste"-space and stay there for a total of nine whole turns, because every time the other players passes they'll say "I Told You So, MSI Are Not Funny". If! And only if you survive that, you can stay in the game.

Perhaps not 'goth scene' so much as 'bands liked by people with multiple Bauhaus shirts who really, really like Ian Curtis.'

Also, Boris is a wonderful suggestion.  Pink is one of the most fun rock albums I have heard in a while.

Pink is a fantastic album, a great mix of COCKRAWK Boris and dronedronedronedronedronefuzzfuzzfuzzfuzz Boris.  The closer, "Just Abandoned Myself", blows my mind every time I hear it.

Heavy Rock has some absolutely great rocking songs on it.

Lately I have been obsessed with Rainbow, their collaboration with Michio Kurihara.  Its more quiet and downtempo than most of their other stuff, and the combination of Boris doing rhythm and vocals with Michio Kurihara's effects laden solos is a great fit.

I hear our good friend Tommy Dski is excellent on the skin flute. It would definetly be worth it to go check him out.

I'd have to ask what your tastes are, as mine are mostly in the more metal/hard rock area

Finger Eleven- I have yet to hear a song from them I didn't like, and while one or two were a little to slow for my tastes, they were still good

Incubus- High quality here, but they have so much out finding the best of the best is kinda hard

SevenDust- I regret every day I do not own a cd of theirs, because this is some awesome music, it's great to just sit back and relax too (yes, I relax to metal, I am wierd)

Rammstein- I don't know what they're saying 90% of the time, and from what my friend translates as he does know German decently,I don't really want to know, bu it's still good music

Stone Sour- I would recommend Slipknot, but I get the feeling I would be heckled for that, so I went with another band with Corey Taylor as a lead singer, as he really is good, anyone who disagrees, you obviously haven't heard "Bother" by him.

...Because its a thread asking about what new music should the person try, it's late at night, I'm bored, and it seemed like an interesting topic. As for who I am, well, you can read, right? /sarcasm

How about I ask you the same question?

I'm sorry, but when you act concerned about mentioning Slipknot, then talk about Finger Eleven and Incubus, I think there's something wrong in your head.

I'm sorry, but when you act concerned about mentioning Slipknot, then talk about Finger Eleven and Incubus, I think there's something wrong in your head.

Really, I'd have to ask you to explain why, because I don't quite understand...wait, I think I may get it, is this the "their mainstream too" arguement? If thats where this is going, then I will say that thats not why I say that. Most people think Slipknot's a bit generic, so I catch hell for it. Apprently, people don't put Finger Eleven and Incubus in the "been done before" category, so it's no problem. If thats not it, then I'm confused, articulate please. (trying to sound as least sarcastic as possible here)

Also, people don't like screaming in music, but honestly, as long as you can understand what he's saying, who cares? I guess some people do, but it never bothers me. Though honestly, why people get pissy about many things in music, besides maybe subject matter, is beyond me.

After some investigation I have come to the conclusion that Finger Eleven sound like they were on the soundtrack to a very bad film from the late '90s/early '00s, something probably intended to appeal to the yoof. I'm actually quite surprised there are still bands like this around. Stone Sour and Incubus sound like that too actually, you can just imagine the credits coming up listing the name of someone who was in Dawson's Creek or Buffy The Vampire Slayer and thinking 'why the hell did I watch that all the way through?'. A kind of music which inevitably conjures up a feeling of irritated disappointment.

All this is proof of the wide range of tastes out there, cause I do not see it like that at all actually. I see them as music with energy too it, something I can latch on to why trying to get through the day, and make a nice balance to the softer rock/metal I have on my mp3 player. They also make for great background music, something that you don't exactly focus on but is still there, hell knows how many times I've sat through a whole gaming session listening to my music, just nodding my head to it while playing. Its not music that your supposed to sit there and "debate its finer points" but just sit the fuck back and listen to while your doing something. The point isn't to sit there and say "Now that guitar solo really sets off the change in emotion during the song when the singer gets to this part of the lyrics" its not there to be dissected and picked at, its there to be listened to and enjoyed, not picked apart and analyized.

I love how this guy thinks he's got us all pegged as intellectual snobs who are too good for anything not completely original, or good for just having on.

No, see, my argument is about as simple as pinkpiche's.

Hold up a bit.  In a thread about new music, this guy mentions Rammstein.  This is a comic goldmine.  We should be more encouraging.

I wouldn't say intellectual snobs, just simply a different way of looking at music in general. While I'm sure everyone on here's listen to something not considered "original" that does seem to be the going trend on here. All I had to do was read through some of the other threads, and that proves it. List some of your favorite bands, and we'll see how many are considered mainstream, then we can discuss "intellectuall snobbisness." When you listen to music, as far as I can see, your looking for something with a certain level of orginality to it, thats fine, that's your tastes. I just look for high energy music, which is fine, it suits me.

Of course, your first reply to my post was probably not the best way to get me to think "wow, what a nice guy," and while I'm sure you don't care if I like you or not, do not expect me to respond in the nicest manner either. Most of the follow up posts by people have been in much the same vein as your's, except a pack of wolves, who gave reasons as to why he doesn't like my choices, and while I disagree, I'm not going after him for it, but to keep up a good arguement. pinkpiche's reply was at best short and stupid, thus not going to get my attention, had you not brought it up.

pilsner: from what I gathered, the thread starter wasn't looking for bands that were just starting, just new music to try. If you've never tried listening to Rammstein before, then it would be technically considered "new." That's what I'm trying to say. After this I doubt you'll here from me again, other than at 2 or so in the morning again, as that was the reason I came on the music section, but putting up with assholes isn't really worth my time.

your looking for something with a certain level of orginality to it,

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that these are slip ups, but if not please learn to use them in the correct manner. Also if English is not your first language I apologize a little but still learn.

EDIT for imagist42, who seems to think I am being rude here: Helios, this is for your own good. This board has its fair share of people that will mock/be an ass to you for this type of thing.

Picking up on those when imagist42 managed to confuse two and too is a little unfair I reckon. Those are common mistakes particularly by someone typing in a hurry but two and too?

Helios05, I don't think it's the level of originality in the music you recommended that resulted in some people ripping the piss. I think it's more that those bands bring nu-metal to mind (even if they might not technically fit into that genre), and if you go on any forum that's a bit music geeky and bring up bands like that then there will be mockery. Nu-metal is a hated thing, and let's be honest not without reason (the facial hair alone was enough of a crime). But don't let it bother you. I dearly love metalcore myself and you don't get a much more maligned genre than that. Just remember that it isn't really you that people are ripping on, it's just your taste in music and in the end that's not a terribly important thing. I used to hang around with an intelligent, articulate and all-around good guy who was a huge fan of ICP.

I think the mere fact that you seem to equate being off the mainstream with a) originality and b) intellectuality proves that you have no idea what you're talking about with regard to both the people here and music in general. Now, see, I could have just pulled a Misconception calling you out on the language thing and said, "Hahaha you can't spell intellectual or snobbiness ergo you = idiot," like the sort of rude ass Misconception clearly is not. (That better?)

(And yes, I recognize the irony of what a pack of wolves has pointed out. I just spotted that myself. No confusion between the two, just as you say: typing in a hurry.)

That dude looks like a villain in an episode of Baywatch. I would mainly be intrigued about what a guy who listened to someone that looks like that would be like. I'm actually picturing Hawaiian shirts, a six pack on hand at all times and the ability to conjure up a beach party in the middle of West Yorkshire. I'd put Suicidal Tendencies on a ghetto blaster if that went down. That would be awesome, why is this man not at my house right now?

Man, what is this? I was pointing out, in a friendly manner, something that the poster shoould fix before someone much less polite than me will rip them apart. Where in my post was I being at all rude? I phrased it neutrally, not "dude what the fuck, learn to spell you piece of shit."

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that "pulling a Misconception" was being a rude ass. I meant it more as commenting on the use of the language, with the rude ass doing this as a means of shutting the man down without actually responding to what he said. Apparently I am 0 for 2 in clarity today.

You've gotta admit that sentence was phrased really badly if you didn't intend to call me a rude ass. But I will let it slide as long as it doesn't happen again.

As for new music, to get back on topic, please, if you are reading this, download the Radical Face album recently posted in the Mediafire thread. It is made of pure glory and awesome and you will not be disappointed. If you are then I guess there is no hope for you.

I'm going start mixing up my homonyms because I want someone to call me on it and I have a really interesting point to make about internet communication being much closer in style and intent to speech than to written communication and how as a result, mixed homonyms don't significantly interrupt the flow of information enough to warrant the ridiculously pedantic attention paid to their misuse.

Wait no I just made it.

Damnit.

(I do not support people using whichever fucking version of two to and too they want, but I am just saying that conversations on the internet are so casual and context dependent that I have never actually noticed a mixed homonym on my first reading of an internet forum post. Also I actually did notice two because that is just ridiculous)

I have a couple of album suggestions, for varying definitions of "new."

UNKLE's latest album, War Stories, is pretty damn good. It's worth listening to the whole album a couple times through. There's a hidden track at the end, though, so be careful. It's kind of a cross between electronica and rock. Josh Homme sings on a couple of tracks.

Bitter:Sweet came out with The Mating Game in '06, I believe. I suppose they're trip-hop, but that's one of those genres without a clear definition. All the instruments are played by humans and then mixed by computer. No samples, no digital instruments. Some turntable scratches. Oh, and the title track includes a theremin.

Another '06 album is Every Waking Moment by Citizen Cope. It's somewhere between rock, pop, hip-hop, electronica, and all of it very much indie. It's a darker album than his previous effort, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, which I like better. I haven't heard his first album yet, but I hear it's very good.
