Title: Heretic Pride
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 18 Feb 2008, 16:07
So the new Mountain Goats album has found its way out and I've given it a cursory listen as of a few hours ago. I'm impressed. Darnielle, as always, is a great and distinctive vocalist and a wonderful lyricist. I still find myself missing the ultra low-fi days of All Hail West Texas but since they're long gong and multiple instruments and shiny production have become standard I have to settle. The songs here are stronger than some of the more recent albums in many cases. The first two songs are terrific but not a lot of others stand out distinctly (I guess I'll update my thoughts after further listens). In some ways the lyrics seem to lack the short story quality of earlier albums and are a lot more song-y which is kinda disappointing but the lyrics are still stronger than most out there. Overall my initial impressions are very good. What do you guys think?

I can't seem to find the thing in the mediafire thread, and the search bar isn't working for me. Would I be doing a disservice to the thread if I requested an upload or a link?

Not a problem. It's not my upload but it's in mp3. The bit rates seem to be between 170 and 224 (mostly around 200). Enjoy.

Well, the album does come out tomorrow.

I don't usually download leaks of artists I adore as much as The Mountain Goats, so me and my friends are going to be at the record store tomorrow when it opens to get it. I'm really excited! I've mostly heard great things about it. They say it's very different, but still great.

The first two songs are terrific...

That seems to be a trend in his work.  At least, the first two tracks on The Sunset Tree, Tallahassee, and the first three on We Shall All Be Healed are some of, if not the most memorable tracks on all those albums.  I wish he would have done more with the violins and stuff, like in "Linda Blair Was Born Innocent."

I can't wait to hear this new one.

It's a fine album. I only got it a few days ago (my local record store proprietor usually sneaks things out a day or two early to get the jump on the big chain stores) and, as with all Darnielle's work, it's going to take many listens to fully absorb it. First impressions are that it's a step up from Get Lonely which, though beautiful, was a bit one-note. It's interesting to hear Darnielle going back to story-telling after the more confessional songs of the last few albums. If anything, Heretic Pride seems like a continuation of the work he did on the Babylon Springs E.P. (which people outside Australia might not have, as it was originally released as a tie-in to his tour here a couple of years ago).

This is pretty much the first Mountain Goats I've heard and I'm really digging it.

I'm listening to it right now and I'm liking it, but not as much as his older stuff.  This is my first listen through, though.

Ishotdanieljohnston: Get The Sunset Tree.  It's gorgeous.

Yeah I hear that one is really good. Though I really like this album it does feel like he could do alot better. The drummer kicks ass though.

Also get "All Hail West Texas". It has a lot of fuzz because it's very lo-fi and it's pretty much just Darnielle and an acoustic guitar but damn is it good song writing.

John Darnielle is my hero.  Who wants to start the New Zion cult with me?

Oh, excellent.  I'm going to see him at the end of the month and I'm pretty stoked to hear this album right now.

I seriously am not able to move on, I have had the song on repeat since I first heard it this afternoon.

The pre-album press release is pretty interesting
http://www.thejeffreylewissite.com/Mt-Goats-Press-Kit-08.html

it's basically Darnielle's descriptions of the songs with illustrations

(that was linked a little higher up this very page)

I have really warmed to this album after first being a little cold to it. I also appreciate the litle reggae styling to Sept. 15th.

It's downloading right now and taking far too long. Oh how I love the Mountain Goats. There's nothing better than a band that can get a large crowded bar to all yell "Hail Satan" repeatedly.

I bought Get Lonely yesterday and it is really beautiful... the best I've heard of his so far.
