this is something I threw together in MSPaint a minute ago. I think it's pretty cool
It's Martin from comic #1 and then every 100 comics or so.

Dude, I was thinking of doing something like this the other day, but decided I couldn't be bothered.
Kudos to you for having the patience, I like it.
Will you be doing one for the other long-term characters too? Not really much point doing Pintsize...
-
Darnit! What happened to his pretty blue eyes? That's up there with Charles Xavier not having blue eyes. It's just wrong!
-
How could you look at the comic so much and not remember how to spell his fucking name.
-
I think it's really cool how the characters have changed gradually comic by comic. You'd never notice it if you didn't have a back button.
-
I don't know of any martin in QC.
-
Hey Mustard Man, don't let the pedants get you down. We all know that you meant Marten when you wrote Martin.
I really liked the series you put together. Good work!
-
ooh dang, yeah, I meant Marten. :|
I've never been good at that sort of thing... Some days i spell my own name wrong.
I'll do one with pintsize, definitely. :-)
-
You should do Dora or Faye next. Both of those characters have been around since pretty much the beginning.
-
Here here..
I'd do the whole cast. :)

Eww, even Dora's cat?
-
Mr Biachi?
-
Especially Mr. Biachi
-
Sven hasn't changed much though. I think Faye, Marten and Dora are the only ones who have really changed.Hannelore and Raven have a little bit though...but it still would be awesome to see.
-
Here's a vertical evolution-of-Faye. :)

There was a period, exemplified by this comic (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=425) where everyone was really angluar/pointy. Check out Marten in frames 3 and 4 with his bug-eyes. It comes at around the 5th picture down of Faye and the 5th or 6th along of Marten, although it hasn't quite been captured. I dislike this phase of the art more than any of the others, except perhaps the first few strips until Faye, for example, has realistic hair. The faces expecially were ultra-pointy. I think perhaps it needs mention, purely as a display of how dodgy the art used to be.
Nowadays it's actually awesome and I'm not sure how much more progress can be made on it, but beware - Jeph may experiment and it wil go back to those awful undetailed/pointy days! Woe unto thee!
-
Yeah, I didn't like that period either.
Here's Dora. I decided I hated the way I did Faye vertically, hah.

I prefer the second art style over any, including our current one.
And I am starting steve.
-
I like the last style most for the obvious reasons (more physically accurate/proportionate) and I think I like the 6th style least. Or its 6th for Marty and Faye and might be 5th for Dora. Every one seems too rounded or bulging. I mean look at the 6th picture of Faye, her eyes are huge, Dora is the same. In this style its not as prounounced with the men but its an unflattering drawing style I think for the women.
-
I think someone needs to correctly categorise the different styles.
-
I think my favourite style is probably the sixth, for all three of them.

I agree!
I think this was the period when they most resembled Japanese manga characters (especially Faye with her big eyes).
-
Although the point is not to look like manga characters, it's for Jeph to be happy with the way he's drawing. If you want manga-style to be a main part of your art there's always MegaTokyo.
Has anyone noticed that from Dora #5 onwards she's either looking surprised at something or just a bit miserable, whereas in what I'm guessing is the first few hundred strips she's actually happy? What happened to Dora to turn her moody? Even as a goth she looked more cheerful.
Speaking of which, Dora #2 is my second favourite Dora, it's like an entirely different comic. She looks like a goth-geisha in that picture, heh.
-

Strangely? She looks best on the second pic.
Faye looks best middle-to-recent.
-
You know, I like the current style greatly, but I also really liked the early period where the pupils were super huge. I thought it was a neat style for a comic.
-
Guys, I don't know what you're saying about disliking the angular style. It's one of my favorites, artistically, because it's a lot less boring and has more personality.
-
I like the angular, big-pupils style, but the current art is best.
-
Why does this thread make me think about Greek vases? xD
I think my favourites are the second style (Faye's list) and the last few. Styles 6 - 8 are my least favourite, I didn't like the big mouths and some other stuff.
Have you noticed too that the changes in style have been a lot bigger in the past? It seems first comes the experimenting phase and then the refining-of-a-good-idea phase. It really is evolution! ^^
-
My favorite style is still the one from round' this era: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=419 I guess cause it's fuller and more cartoony.
I still like the current style a lot too, although some characters like Hannelore kind of look out of whack sometimes. Then again I guess Hannelore is supposed to look out of whack.
-
I liked the style from tw years ago:
http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=717 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=717)
It had a real look but still a nice a cartoony look.
-
comics 400-600 capture Faye the best I think. I don't like her recent look at all and I REALLY didn't like her older look either.

They seem squashed, like the artist was barely trying in that phase. OR trying too hard.

Wow, this is awesome.
I'm gonna say my favorite is 5th from the end.
-
I have always liked the 4th drawing style the best. The lines just look so much cleaner and uncluttered.
-
I liked the fourth onward, personally. The fourth one looked pretty damn good. If Jeph had just kept the art like that, it'd still be superb. I do love the evolution the comic has gone through, of course.
-
Kudos for putting this together. It looks great seeing the different styles right next to each other. The art evolution is one of the main reasons I like QC so much.
There really should be more pictures though, as the style has slight changes just about every 2 weeks.
-
marten look uncomfertable and/or sad in most of those pictures... poor marten! more happy marten pictures needed methinks. also time for some more radical hairstyles, we've had these ones for aaaaaages
-
Ah, yes... I saw this thread a week or two ago and decided to make this. Only just remembered about it.
Taken a picture for each significant character every 100 comics or so. I did that rather than go by the art style since I'm terrible at noticing the subtle differences (the sixth iteration on this image onwards all look the same to me).
I put Ellen and Meena on the same column since Ellen basically disappears. There's a couple of holes too, but that's all.
-
Interesting, and always remarkable how the art has changed. The later characters (Wilsow, Penny, Tai, Meena) seem set from their first appearance, and Hannelore is settled since she got her haircut. The others would hardly recognise themselves.
Whenever I see the title "Evolution of martin" I think he starts out as some kind of lizard or rat, and is destined to ascend higher state of existence as an energy-being.
-
WOOWWW TAHTS SO AWESOME hehe seriously, thats the coolest thing
i like Hanners's changes best
-
Hey, nice job Tenebrais!
I just sat here looking at that montage for like twenty minutes.
-
I like Tai's evolution.
-
Tenebrais: That is just all kinds of awesome. Best thing I've seen all day. ALL DAY.
(Ignore the fact I only just woke up.)
Thumbs up to you buddy. Big thumbs.
