If you haven't already, go to Jeph's LiveJournal (qcjeph.livejournal.com) and listen to the stuff he's put up.
Do any of you know of any real bands like that? Because if you do I WANT SOME OF THEIR MUSIC HBLHLBLHLBLHLBLHLBHLBHLB.
-
I haven't looked at Jeph's Live Journal but I know of Apocolyptica. They're a group of celloists who started out covering Metallica songs.
-
Dude go listen to some post-metal. Specifically Pelican.
Also, on the Apocolyptica line, Judgment Day is way better. Violinist, cellist, and a drummer. Good shit.
-
Well, there is Sungate's "Neverending Silence of the Pompee".
Instrumental album from somewhere in Western Europe, if I had to guess.
http://www.sungate.ludia-by.sk/?go=1&idkatnr=23
Entire album for download there. Pretty excellent, if I say so myself.
-
Caspian. For real.
-
when did caspian go from post rock to post metal???
outside of post metal
a few boris albums are instrumentals as are most drone artists, nauthisuruz, liquid tension experiment/liquid trio experiment, i know at one stage there was a leak of systematic chaos without vocals
-
I've got a bunch lying around on my hard drive, fuck if I remember any of them right now.
-
Well, shit. I guess I didn't read the title of the thread close enough.
-
AGALLOCH
-
Jesu?
-
Antarctica
-
AGALLOCH
instrumental?
-
No, but there is barely any singing. I wouldn't have said it given the request for pure instrumental, but I do recommend them heartily.
-
Agalloch cannot be recommended enough. I'd recommend it to somebody asking for indie pop - it's just that awesome.
Do you have any specific genres you'd like recommendations from (progressive, death, sludge/'post-metal', etc)? Keep in mind I haven't listened to whatever was on Jeph's livejournal.
-
Russian Circles
-
Baroness is kinda post-metal and just all around better than you. Sure, there's some singing, but they fucking rock, dude.
And I remembered one of the bands on my hard drive! Forgotten Silence. They're good if you don't like words.
-
Nightfist.
They have made me so happy.
So many times.
With only one EP.
-
My friend once said to me "Mudvayne was kind of the first post-metal band ever"
And then we were not friends anymore
-
Karma To Burn, Pelican, Bongripper, Disappearer, One Starving Day, Rosetta, Lent0, Omega Massif, Russian Circles, Dragon Green ... I could recommend a bunch of other bands that have similar sounds but include vocals of various types as well.
-
Strong Like Bear are pretty fucking cool.
-

Very true. The issue stems from when it is too awesome for the person's ears, you need to ease them into the awesomeness.
Or maybe you just shouldn't start with limbs and the sometimes painful feedbackish sounds at the beginning. Mantle would be a good place to introduce someone to them though.
edit: The main problem with them is that their sound is unique enough that nothing else really fits when you want to hear more, but are tired of hearing the same songs over again. There are the EPs still, but those are all limited edition things, and I am too poor to buy them from someone else.
-
Man how is that feedback at the start of Limbs so fucking loud no matter how low I turn down the volume?
-
No! The only way to properly introduce someone to Agalloch is to strap them into a chair, tape a shisha up one of their nostrils, fill it with 30x Salvia Divinorum and then play The Grey EP on endless loop until they have achieved a higher tier of consciousness. You can note down everything they say and use it as the basis for a new religioun.
Also, I would heavily dispute the idea that the singing and lyrics is not absolutely integral to Agallochs work, though the instrumental side is pretty fucking orgasmic, what with being an utterly perfect fusion of black metal, neo-folk, post-rock and no wave, and all.

Motherfuckin
Karma To Burn
-
It's still all about The Kabinboy for me when it comes to instrumental metal. Their riffs were huge.
-
Guys, I was hoping that this thread would be a thread to come up with names for somebody's metal act.
Can we make this thread a thread to come up with names for a metal act?
-
If you qualify Earth as metal I think the would count.

I think "Amplifier Worship" would be a good example of this, though one track has some yelling and such.

Wondered when someone was gonna mention earth. Great band!

I got to be in the mood for them but they are awesome. Dylan Carlson is my favourite guitar player to this date.

i was just about to mention them too
earth is pretty awsum
would you consider buckethead metal instrumental? at least alot of his earlie rwork

I don't think it is so much loud, I think it has to do with how it is like having someone run a goddamn table saw right next to your ear.
I don't have the grey EP, I think I might have to download it. It is out of print, right?
The singing seems to me more like another instrument, not at all like most singing I hear. I don't know how to describe it other than that. Did I say that the lyrics weren't important? If I did, I shouldn't have.

LOCAL BAND PLUG TIME
Electro Quarterstaff from Winnipeg. Named after the weapon of choice in Rocket Robin Hood!
They're more or less entirely instrumental, but I heard they recently got a singer... not sure if this is true. I kind of hope not. They do a wicked version of the Dr. Wiley song from Mega Man 2, blows Minibosses out of the water.
It seems we like to name our bands after stupid pop culture references that nobody will get around here(there is also Krull and Big Trouble in Little China)
-
The Mirimar Disaster
i'd never heard of them until i saw them opening for Will Haven a few months ago, and they were fucking incredible. Blew everyone else off the stage that night.
www.myspace.com/themirimardisaster - persius and the thinking tree are the instrumental ones.
