Title: Music Recommendations?
Post by: Mister Arkadin on 22 Feb 2008, 10:19
So, I'm getting really sick of listening to the same 297 songs over and over again. I'd really like some new music but Last.fm is just giving me shit.

I like bands that can rock the fuck out. With drumming that doesn't suck. Weird bloopy noises are sometimes good too.
Does anybody know of any good bands of this sort?
I hope it's okay that I post this here...?

Edit- Bands I like:

The Jesus and Mary Chain
DFA 1979
Deerhoof
Gorillaz
Fugazi
Beck
Sonic Youth
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Television
Queens of the Stone Age
The Stooges

Sorry pal, I wish I could help you but I only listen to bands incapable of rocking out that have shit drummers.

Considering I don't know what you listen to already, to compare to, I could say slipknot, or I could say candlebox...or maybe even astrovamps.
But those are just ideas.

Battles are ok, but they're one of those 'Electronica with lots of weird spasticness' bands like Animal Collective or Panda Bear.

I don't know what you've already heard of, but bands that can rock over the last few decades, assuming you've already heard of all the mainstream ones and don't want just 'Bang the hell out of crap and scream' stuff...

Gang of Four
X
Sleater-Kinney
Pixies
Sonic Youth

And, newer but not at the same level ones:
Protest the Hero
Dillinger Escape Plan

How dare you group Battles with Animal Collective.

Battles rocks the fuck out. Listen to Battles. Disregard this man's opinion.

If you like awesome then try:
Gogol Bordello
The World/Inferno Friendship Society

Those are pretty unique punk, straight up rocking out:
Dinosaur Jr.
My Bloody Valentine

And since you liked Battles, more akin to that:
Holy Fuck
Mogwai

I think you can find most of them in our mediafire thread too.

Black Mountain and Dead Meadow have released two of my favorite albums of 2008. They rock, with some psych overtones.

Look into Motörhead's Bomber and Overkill  if you're only familiar with Ace of Spades.

Hüsker Dü is essential. Start with Zen Arcade or the Metal Circus EP.

I second Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Black Mountain, Dead Meadow, Boris, Electric Wizard, Kyuss, The Flaming Lips, The Desert Sessions, and Mogwai.

I will add Orange Goblin, Baby Woodrose, Baroness, Colour Haze, Kyuss, Yawning Man, Witch, Super Furry Animals (especially if you end up liking the Flaming Lips), OM, Moccasin, Brant Bjork, Masters of Reality, Mammatus, and Kyuss.

Oh, and Kyuss.  You should listen to Kyuss.

I would recommend Silkworm but I hate being so predictable.

They do fit his criteria pretty exactly.

Edit for recommendations: You might like Giraffes? Giraffes! They do some pretty bitchin' math rock.

To explain Boris better, I'd say that Pink rocks out in multifarious ways, but that it at times reminds me of DFA 1979 (mostly "Electric," perhaps because it is a noisy-ass song that rocks and makes me want to dance like a maniac)

Have you tried !!! ?  Not nearly as noisy as death from above, but they are great for dancing.  I have heard that their self-titled (it was their self-titled, wasn't it?) and their latest are better than their sophomore album, Louden Up Now, even though that has "Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard" on it and that song is amazing.

I will second Richard Hell.  Also Television is kinda similar and also very good.  Not sure if they really sound like anything you mentioned...

I don't think Television sound like many of the bands that have been mentioned, but they certainly rock.

Bullshit, not only is it a great name, they are one of the few bands I can imagine being cool enough to live up to having such a name.

Weak cop-out is weak. Slipknot is not something to joke about.

b) It is fucking ridiculous that the Mirrored album cover photographer has receieved critical acclaim for the cover and sleeve. It is probably the ugliest cover I know of.

No way dude, that's Cat Power's The Greatest, I am pretty sure. The one where it's shiny.

Hell, I totally missed that.

Maybe he'd like Gang of Four and Mission of Burma?  The Pop Group if he's feeling adventurous.

Post by: Valekraft on 26 Feb 2008, 03:25
You could always listen to Vale's Eclectic mix of wierdness...

Blues:  (I do volunteer work at WWOZ New Orleans)
B.B. King
Johnny Lang
Son House
John Mayer Trio (not his pop albums)
Dr. John
Professor Longhair

Rock: (I rarely listen to anything newer than 1997)
Candlebox
Refresments (don't be dissing this band, Roger Clyne is a genious)
Jerry Cantrell (with or without Alice in Chains)
Caroline Spine
Depeche Mode (guilty pleasure I suppose)

Americana:
GRAYSON CAPPS (best songwriter I have ever met.)

Country: (I can't beleive this section is here either)
Shooter Jennings
Cross Canadian Ragweed (more southern Rock than country but whatever)
Brad Paisley (as long as he isnt singing and just playing guitar... He has a lot of instrumental songs)

Odds and ends:
The Black Keys
Bob Marley
North Mississippi Allstars

Classic Rock:
THE BAND
Skynyrd
Allman Brothers
CCR
Steppenwolf
Deep Purple

I listen to 90% of everything and enjoy it to some extent but this is what I would like to hear right now so yeah....
