Title: Parties!
Post by: casull on 07 Mar 2008, 08:52
Tell about interesting parties you have hosted or been to!

for example:

My friends and I had a rave in the bathroom of my dorm last year. Basically, we screwed a strobe light into the ceiling of the showers, turned on said showers, handed out glowsticks, and proceeded to pack 30 people into a space smaller than your average dorm room and flood the room. Among the things I learned that night:

Hosting a party that sends people to the hospital apparently makes you cool?

People like making out in showers.

My bass amp will survive three inches of standing water.

A shower under a strobe light while drunk is fascinating.

Burning Man counts, right?

So I was at this party at Burning Man and there were people climbing around in a giant sculpture made out of two oil-tanker big rigs twisted around each other (http://bigrigjig.com/wp-content/uploads/cache/h_TroySandal_600x402.jpg) and I was on MDMA for the first time and I had just come from the Cubitron (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=17423019) and the music was amazing, so I decided to go up to the top of the 100-foot oil derrick they built in the middle of the desert (http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2007/08/crude-awakening.html).  The view was outstanding and there was even a couch to chill out on up there, and I met these cats who were definitely tripping their FACES off, and we went back down to the playa and found that thing they'd been looking for (http://images.burningman.com/gallery/alesp.32018.jpg) and proceeded to Entheon Village to dance to whoever was DJing.  I definitely ran into at least one live marionette puppet (http://images.burningman.com/gallery/backdoor.28142.jpg), a musical instrument that used fire to play tones (http://images.burningman.com/index.cgi?image=31271&results=31477,31475,31474,31473,31461,31457,31451,31449,31446,31445,31440,31385,31367,31334,31274,31271,31265,31263,31250,31195&ord=56/1247&skip=40&q_photog=&q_category=&q_keyword=car&q_year=), a triceratops (http://images.burningman.com/gallery/baobab.30176.jpg), and a talking robotic giraffe (http://images.burningman.com/gallery/cameragirl.26668.jpg).  The music was ubiquitous and fantastic, the people were outstanding, and all in all, it was a pretty good party.

That was about 2 or 3 hours out of the week I was there.  I proceeded to spend 3 more hours dancing in Entheon Village, watched the sunrise from the top of the oil derrick (easily one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen), and saw a double rainbow (http://www.wolfsmithmedia.com/images/burningmanrainbow.jpg) (actually the most beautiful thing I've ever seen) the next day.

I had a bad party this past weekend at the end of my spring break. I invited all of my friends, and a few people I haven't seen in a while, and a bunch of randoms showed up.
Oh well, I guess. I had an alright time.. I learned some skill at guitarhero while I was ignoring stupidity all around me.

I think you reach a point where parties just get dumb.  I have been to a few parties in my day, and I can't really remember the last time I actually had more than a few minutes worth of fun.  If I enjoy myself at all, it's usually if I manage to stay until everything has wound down and the people who can still stand engage in a good conversation.  Too many people get fucking stupid when they drink, and somehow get into screaming matches or fistfights.  Angry drunks annoy me to no end.

I don't go to parties. I used to when I was in highschool but I stopped drinking pretty soon after I turned 18 and they stopped being fun. I also stopped hanging out with people to the extent that I no longer get invited to things because the chances that I will actually go are slim to none and that's being generous.

This is an interesting point. I do think people like the idea of parties more than they do the actual parties.

I don't drink, so parties for me are always enormously amusing. I went to a party recently where a lot of people got too drunk. At one point there were three people bleeding in the kitchen, one girl licking vodka off the floor while people tried to pick up the broken glass, one person catatonic on the floor (he then started throwing up, at which point we got told to leave) and one person being sick in the bathroom. Several people were crying. The vodka-licking girl made out with at least five people which resulted in her sort-of boyfriend being very upset. Someone broke the bed by jumping on it. The television got knocked over.

And I spent most of the evening clearing empty bottles and laughing. Yay for teenagers. I won't be having a party myself in the foreseeable future.

Yeah man, I've never been to a party that bad. In fact, I've never been to a bad party. Every party I go to more or less rocks. Is it because of me? Well, there's a strong positive correlation in graph form that I have back here for such an occasion.... See? Right there where it states that whenever I enter a party a strong cheer of "PHIIIIIL!!!" is chorused around the room, even by people I don't know, and increases the fun factor of everyone involved by 34%. This coupled with vodka shots can make an okay party into a good one.

I have a friend who is researching curves. Apparently he has discovered a new one. This is what he is doing for the next three and a half years. He's going to write a book about it. I'm quite concerned about the future of our nation but apparently this is the future of mathematics and it'll be useful for engineering and stuff. I will believe him, because he knows more about maths than I do, but I think I'll stick to Law and nice straight forwards essays.

I am not a party person. Unless it's one of those parties that involves fancy dress or whatever, those are awesome. But yeah. A good number of parties I go to don't involve alcohol. But in under 2 weeks, I will be going to a 20's style party at a gay bar, even though the birthday we're celebrating belongs to a straight person. Oh well, it'll be fun.
Title: Re: Parties!
Post by: Barmymoo on 10 Mar 2008, 13:54
That's possibly the best kind of party. It's not in anyone's house, so there is no major risk of offence or structural damage (how many house parties come with bouncers to intervene if things get messy?). There is booze but it comes at a price so people won't drink quite as much. And the music will probably be better.

Not sure about the gay part, though, unless some of the people going are in fact gay. But it'd be interesting I guess.
Title: Re: Parties!

In that circle of friends, most of them are gay or bisexual. For us straight folks, it's still a good time.

Post by: Barmymoo on 10 Mar 2008, 14:01
Fair enough, I thought it'd be something like that. Although I do have many friends who go to gay bars just out of curiosity (not about their sexuality, you understand. Just about the interior of a gay bar).

Actually I retract that statement. The friend I was thinking of most has just started going out with another girl. Who'd've guessed, huh?

I used to live in a nudist house with a pool and a hot tub.

Our parties were, as you might imagine, quite entertaining, bordering on legendary debauchery.

You'd walk in the door, and about a third of the party would be fully clothed, a third fully naked, and a third in some state of disrobing or getting dressed again. The line "Oh, I didn't recognize you with your clothes on" was quite common. I think that sort of party takes the right mixture though; alchohol was involved, excessive inebriation was not; nudity was involved, but sex was not (though obviously flirtation is a different game when clothes are optional). It worked best by keeping the invite list discrete, bringing people by the house as a guest before the party so that they at least knew what to expect .. and obviously the frat-boy-drunk-type were unwelcome.

A tip for throwing very good parties, by the way, is, pick a theme and go with it. One of my favorite parties is the Capitalism party, whose theme is .. well, money is printed, everybody gets some money at the door, jobs are on offer (e.g., manning the bar, manning the casino, etc), and the party-goer's task is to arrive with some good or service which they think they'll be able to sell. You can always buy low, sell high, too, if you can identify items that will be in-demand later in the party. It works brilliantly: the "need" to interact, to "sell" your product, provides a very good, socially acceptable way for even introverts to get out of their shell.

Another tip - if you're hosting a big party, don't let people in the house unless they're a friend. Yes, this means you need a door guard, but do you really want uninvited, unknown-to-you guests showing up, drinking your drinks, eating your food, and trashing your place? This is especially a problem in urban areas and college towns. If you've gone with a costume theme of any sort, flat out reject every individual who can't be bothered to show up in costume: that alone will keep most of the riffraff out!

Why haven't you already formed a band with this name Johnny.

Also I remember there was this kind of tradition called "Saturday Morning Nude" at my friends house after a party that everyone would get naked and sit around in the morning. The origins of this are lost in the sands of time and substance abuse, but eventually we had a hardcore group of about fifteen people that would make a point of hanging around after the party to wake up the next morning and spend the morning hanging around nude punching cones and watching TV.

Of course, you'd always wind up with people who weren't really familiar with the tradition, pass out drunk and would wake up in a house full of nude people watching kids cartoons, which quite frankly was a massive part of the appeal. you could tell a lot about a persons character observing how they reacted to Saturday Morning Nude.

At New Year we had a mashed potato party. There were eighteen of us with tons of different allergies and food requirements, so we bought all the potatoes in the shop and cooked and mashed them, then served them in three different ways (sour cream, spices, mayonnaise and so forth). And then we had about eleven different types of sausages.

It was amazing. But I did most of the washing up which was marginally less exciting.

Ooh, and to make it better: we were all wearing cocktail dresses or suits. And one girl was eight and a half months pregnant. We followed up the eating of the potato by doing a Red Dwarf team quiz and having scooter races in the hall. It was seriously the best party ever. It lasted three days and we ate in three different pubs and climbed a big hill in the fog. Major point: very little alcohol was involved. It was a grown-ups party, innit.

Every month after classes are done a friend of mine hosts a LAN/BBQ. Activities range from playing PS3 and 360 games(mostly Rock Band) on the HD Projector, massive games of UT2k4, AOE3, and various other LAN games, and hanging around the 6 foot wide fire pit in the back yard swapping stories, someone playing a real guitar, and singing whatever comes to mind from old campfire classics to comedy bits to Irish diddies, Disney themes, and show tunes.

Jawbreaker - Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault

Quote
I went to a party last night.
What sick things I saw.
Makeout sessions and bicycle messengers,
Punks and art school dropouts.
I ran into this guy I knew
But hadn't seen in years.
We went into the neon kitchen and stole a couple beers.
He said his girl had dumped him
But there was another guy.
He said that he still liked her.
All I could say was,
"Why, why, oh why, oh why,
Why is it always like this?
Either you're too mean, or you're too nice."
He said, "I even cooked her breakfast."
So we went into the living room.
Someone was blasting Zeppelin.
It sounded good.
I felt ashamed.
I knew every drum fill.
Anyway, there she sat,
Totally kissing this guy.
They looked good, I mean like in love.
Then I remembered my friend.
He said, "How could you do this?
You said that you needed your space.
He's wearing the shirt that I gave you."
Then she said, "Why, why, oh why, oh why,
Why are you always like this?
If I'm having fun then it's breaking your heart.
Besides, you said I could have it."

If you're not partying with people who know how to party, then you have to have a theme. Ones that have worked the best for me in the past:

- Mexican Mustache Party (Everyone wears a mustache... real, painted on, or fake.... and lots of sangria is provided)- this works really well if your party-goers are broke, in college, or too lame/boring to follow more advanced party themes.
- Naked party (only invite people who are good conversationalists though and expect an unnerving amount of eye-contact)... this can also be modified to a "No-pants" theme if you have uptight friends. Bodypainting is also way fun at any age and in any situation.
- Hat party - it's always fun to talk to someone with a lampshade on their head! works for dorky people, too!

The drink/drug of choice for the party also matters. Weed-fueled parties = ultra lame (to me at least... it always devolves into people sitting around listening to college jam bands and ordering pizza). Cocaine-driven parties = bring out better looking people with fewer inhibitions. beer drinkers are boring. real wine drinkers take a while to get going and once they do they are spectacularly touchy feely with total strangers.

I am determined to have some really fucking nice parties when I move out. Most parties haven't lived up to my expectations because most people here think a party is where you drink until you're having sex, throwing up, crying, fighting someone or something, arrested, or unconcious.
sex is a totally legitimate way to end a party!... the rest not so much. Do your friends have real emotional problems or something?

Also, its moustache, and combine that with the Naked Party and you've got yourself something to figure out. And technically I suppose you could combine all of that with the cocaine driven party... I'd never attend any of those three separately, combine them and you've got a level of hedonism that I just can't comprehend.

i generally watch as opposed to partake, but yeah, apparently coke is a totally normal recreational drug for FIT design students, overworked mid-mgt IT people, unsuccessful musicians, visual artists, grad students, and (obviously) financial workers... and it makes all those otherwise kind of boring people a heck of a lot more fun than they usually are so I support its appearance at any party i go to.

edit: also, I support anything that brings good looking people into the room because I can't do it on my own that's for sure.

ps. boo for urban dictionary. this year's b'day party will have to involve stuffed animals  somehow then.

I try and throw one extravagant and interestingly themed party a year; I started my Sophomore year with my Trafalgar Day party, thrown in honor of the 200th anniversary of Nelson's victory over the Franco-Spanish fleet.  The booze was pub ale, grog (made with pusser's navy rum) and gin.  The music was Gilbert and Sullivan.  It was quite enjoyable, even though we got broken up at around 11:00 something.  This is where I learned what it like to be puking drunk.  I also learned that you have parties on the -third- floor common rooms of dorms, because security never goes up there, as opposed to the ground floor, where this one was.

Next year I did a Cognac and Snobbery party, in which there was much relatively classy (that is to say, the nicest stuff I could get for under $25 a bottle) brandy, nice clothes and enough ice, creme de cacao and cream for brandy Alexanders.  Here I learned that everyone seems to love brandy alexanders, and that it is hard to get drunk when you are busy all night bartending.

This year I'm planning on a sequel to the Cognac and Snobbery party, but also throwing a goth dance party with my friends, which shall have (recently availible in the states) absinthe and a playlist that the music forum had some hand in helping me with.

Sometime I really want to do a party paying tribute to a rather hard-drinking, irracscible, decidedly low-brow student of our fine institution who graduated my sophomore year.  The party would be dedicated to the individual in question and the Stooges, and would play music that was as loud  and riotous as possible--the MC5, the Stooges, the Sonics, the Monks, The Rocket from the Tombs, etc.

this can also be modified to a "No-pants" theme if you have uptight friends. Bodypainting is also way fun at any age and in any situation.

One of my friends did this, and it was rad. She has pictures. And hot friends.

This is awesome.

I went to a solstice party on, well, the winter solstice. 'Cept it was really just the closest Friday to the solstice. It was fun! There was a hookah (tobacco, I will have you know), excellent beer (fuck yes, He'Brew Messiah Bold) and Mass Effect. It was pretty damn kickin'.

I went to a fairly small high school.  There were 30 people graduating from my class, and about 120 people in the high school.  That's a pretty decent-sized graduation party, isn't it?

One of the kids in my class lived on an island up by Plymouth MA.  So we all drove there (it was about a 40min drive) and got in his motorboat and went over to his island.  There were summer houses there but his family was the only one there year-round, so they had the whole island to themselves, and it was pretty big.  some of us smoked in the marsh, there were people setting up tents in the woods, there were sweeping hills, we hung out on the jetties off of their rocky beach.  This kid's family had a gigantic dog and two donkeys in its possession, and the donkeys would just follow people around all night.

It was a great party, also.  Maybe that's because we had just graduated, and it's sort of a last huge hurrah, and with an incestuously small class size we were all pretty close.  Great location though, and I think that's part of what made it stand out so much.

The talk about a mexican moustache party reminded me of what might have been the best party experience of my life actually. I turned up to a friends 21st with a bottle of Jamesons and wound up wandering around taking swigs from the bottle and then I fell off a second story balcony, onto a trampoline where a dude in a full on bandito outfit was drinking by himself and I asked him why he wasn't partying and in a flawless mexican accent (bear in mind there are probably 12 mexicans in this whole country) he told me that all the gringos at that party were cunts and that he was having more fun jumping on the trampoline drunk. So then we hung out drinking on the trampoline for about and hour and then we busted back into the house yelling shit in Spanish, commandeered the playstation and kicked the shit out of Tonight I'm Gonna Rock you on Expert in Guitar Hero 2 on a giant cinema screen with a massive crowd watching us, pulling the most ridiculously decadent rock star moves I have ever done in my life.

And bear in mind that this was one incident in a party full of incidents like this.

Also it was not a costume party.

My roomates and I are throwing an Easter-themed party this coming weekend, we hope to have a easter-beer hunt with random cans scattered around the house, any other fun suggestions?

Does anyone else here really like raves?  Something about the combination of obscenely loud sub-bass and lots of people on acid or Ecstasy all in the same place gets me every time.

I have some friends who like to hold drugless raves, I went to one once, and I really just didn't see the point in jumping around like and idiot to loud bass and dancing with glowsticks while sober.

I like standing on top of speakers with my glowsticks on shoelaces and mesmerising the hundred people in front of me who are on x. They are like huggy, adorable zombies.

I have just returned from a graffiti party that was pretty fun. I enjoy going to frat parties just to laugh at the drunk people.

Everyone wears a white t-shirt. When you show up you get a marker and everyone writes on everyone's shirts all night. The things written on shirts are usually either dirty or unintelligible as the crowd will probably be 95% drunk.

Most people will end up looking somewhat like this:

And a collage of some of the things written on my shirt:

I remember the time I passed out drunk and woke up and everyone at the party had covered me from head to toe in nikko markings. I'm not sure what freaked me out more, the fact that at some point I must have been stripped naked and then dressed again while passed out drunk, or that at some point someone had the inclination to write I <3 YOU right on my buttcheek.

The best one though was a large drawing of a robot bursting its way out of my back like it was busting through a canvas sheet.

I think I really want to have a graffiti party though now, it sounds like excellent fun.

They are ridiculous good fun. Just remember to hand out washable markers unless you feel like repainting your house afterwards.

Ironically that is exactly what happened on the last day of term at my school, except that no one was drunk (or at least no one was admitting to being drunk, which isn't the same thing).

I got "I'll miss you" written up my arm in blue marker. It didn't come off for days.

Liz, I pretty much did that very same thing as my freshman yearbook. It's one of my favourite possessions. I can't ever wear it again, though, because it'll eventually wash out, even though it's permanent marker.

I have a shirt from last year's spring break trip with writing all over it as well, but everyone was sober at the time so it's not nearly as entertaining.
