I saw video of this on TopChannel a couple hours ago. First you see a bunch of smaller explosions and a big cloud from where some minor explosions were going on for several minutes. Then suddenly this MASSIVE motherfucker of an explosion shows up on the left side of the screen. Fucker went up 5000 feet into the sky and the shockwave knocked the cameraman on his ass after the 15 seconds it took to reach him.

I just saw a report on the BBC news site, my first thought was "I wonder if Patrick is alive."
Clearly I'm a bit more morbid than tommy.
Glad you're alive, Patrick.
-
Between this and that botch of a mountain-side demolition that you were talking about awhile ago, I'm beginning to think that Albania might not have the most competent of regulatory officials/people responsible for oversight.
-
The reports on this seem to be sure to mention how the team dismantling the weapons was American-led.
Here's a video:

Yeah, well, if they don't mention that it was at the hands of us Yanks, it'll give NATO the idea that Albanians don't know how to handle the dismantling of explosives. And of course they don't, which is why they hired Yanks who don't know how to handle the dismantling of explosives to do it for them.
I'm beginning to think that Albania might not have the most competent of regulatory officials/people responsible for oversight.
Try living here a year and a half, mate.
Re: Tommy, no, I didn't feel it, I was busy rocking out at band rehearsal (the bassist had his amp turned up so loud that the fucker MOVED, and that thing is like 80lbs, so yeah, we couldn't feel shit). But my mum felt it, her friend felt it, and it was allegedly felt as far away as Macedonia.
-
Clearly I'm a bit more morbid than tommy.
No, you just have a higher regard for human life.
-
Goddamn it Patrick. GTFO of Albania. That's an order.
-
Yeah, that's a pretty good idea.
-
Patrick, really, you'd be better off in Bosnia.
Which is fucking psychotic.
-
To be fair, the vast majority of the people injured were injured by debris from when the shockwave broke windows and other related fun things. I mean, I feel bad hearing about small children getting bad burns and catching shrapnel and other such things, but seriously? It's the fault of their parents, who did them a major disservice by building next to a GIANT FUCKING MUNITIONS DEPOT.
Did I mention that every building erected within 5 miles in any direction from that depot was built illegally? I mean, shit, even the airport is just barely legal, and you've probably heard what kind of damage was done there.
I should go over to the airport and see if I can't bring home a piece of that armored glass or something.
-
Bump for video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BVjAiAwhFc)
That's only about 1% of all the explosives they're storing over there. If that surface-to-air missile depot lights off...
-
Maybe this time they will get people that know what they are doing?
-
There's an Albanian girl in my communications class. I'm going to ask her what she thinks of this whole situation.
Frankly, it's got me all bummed out. No one likes people dying. :(
-
No one likes people dying. :(
except, apparently, the current US presidential administration.
-
Oh ho ho!
Scathing political insight.

Scathing political insight.
no, just voicing my opinion long-term observation.
-
Usually it's considered common courtesy to voice an opinion relevant to the discussion at hand.
-
Besides, if people in this forum took every opportunity for a cheap shot at the US government, we'd be, like, a Facebook group or something.
Ugh.

it's peanut butter jelly time.

as opposed to a fan board for a web comic?
-
okay, a serious and on-topic post that is relevant:
that is some seriously horrifying video and i feel for everyone who is a victim of that horrendous fuckup.
i hope things turn out better than i fear it might.
-
Oh hey, there is an edit button at the top of your posts, so you don't really need to double (or triple) post, ok? Also, we may have all been thinking it, but you didn't really need to spell it right out that you think the US government at the moment is pretty silly. Try going about showing us, rather than just telling us!
Anyway, Patrick, that sounds really scary, but I'm glad you are safe and seemingly ok.
-
First thing I thought when I heard was, "I'd hate to be where Patrick is."
The conspiracy theorist at my high school believes that serbs were trying to blow up the munitions depot. Keep in mind that he may be genuinely psychologically unstable and is an idiot.
-

it's not a double or triple post unless the contents are identical.

you don't like my opinion, too bad.
-
::sigh:: That is precisely what Eris was not actually saying.
No, what she was saying is that, yes, "we may all have been thinking it," but, well, "you didn't really need to spell it right out" and it would've been better to "show us rather than just tell us."
Does that make more sense?
Oh! And, um, "double posting" is what we call it when you post more than once in a row instead of just editing your first post to finish saying everything you wanted to, like I just did!
-

so she was saying "a still tongue makes a happy life"?
how do you propose it be shown, since we're dealing in text here?

::patronising sigh:: then this is the first board i've ever heard of where that's the case...and i've been on the Internet since the NSF was still providing alot of the network and HTTP didn't exist yet.
EDIT: oh, and btw, i will spell out whatever i damned well like.
-
The only issue with your political beliefs is that you're making broad statements in a completely serious manner while neglecting to give just reason and sound explanation. Topics are discussed here and not argued. Learn from this, for the sake of civility and so you don't make an idiot of yourself.
Also, I thank you proving the question of whether maturity is a direct representation of age.
-
Is the "edit post" button really a recent invention?
And to think I used to feel old for remembering when "blogging" started to get big! I guess that makes more sense, come to think of it, considering that most blogs don't have "edit comment" options. Hmmm.
-
Is the "edit post" button really a recent invention?
nope.
neither is sarcasm.
-
Oh. I was sorta almost being serious. You were all like "I've been on the internet since basically forever and I always figured that posting twice in a row was preferable to editing a post if you had more than one thing to say" (unless I misunderstood you) and I guess I looked back to my high school days of not being able to go back and edit my LiveJournal comments and put two and two together.
OK, I was being a tiny bit facetious, but there's some truth in what I just said as well.
-
Also, I thank you proving the question of whether maturity is a direct representation of age.
it never was a question.
and as for potentially making an ass of myself, i was stating an opinion and not opening a debate.
if you want to know my reasons for this opinion, fine...but i don't care.

LJ in high school...right.
sorry for breaking such precious and anal-retentively held conventions here, i had no idea that in a place so informal a thing like posting twice in a row would be such a howling faux pas.
holy shit.

Man, I was being nice and polite too. I could have just yelled "NO POLITICS ON THE BOARD, CHECK THE FUCKING RUUUUUUUULES" but I didn't. I have no qualms with your political views, I am saying that it wasn't really necessary in the thread and that it would probably spark a debate that would end up being a flame war (especially if you are going to continue to be as abrasive as you have been so far), which none of the mods, admins or the person who can decide whether the forums should stay or not want.
I was not saying that you should not say anything, I just meant you should show how you came by your beliefs without any over-generalisations, assumptions, bias or faulty logic. In other words, when it is appropriate, please be sure to be open minded and take note of other people's opinions. Also, posting more than once in a row is not necessary, different content or not, because you can just put it in one post. the multiple posts gives the impression that you are too lazy to go edit your post. Then people will have preconceived ideas and not be as impartial to your posts.
-

nope.
neither is sarcasm.
And neither, as hard as it may be to believe, is sticking your foot in your mouth and claiming sarcasm.
Every place I have been that I can think of, multi-posting has been frowned on.

actually, i was referring to the post i quoted (which is why i quoted it).
i am not claiming sarcasm.

wow, we must travel in very very different circles.

so, i can't just air an opinion without explaining myself to a jury?
as for the multiple posts, i won't do it again in this forum.
the other ones on this board don't seem to care about it as the posters there frequently indulge in it themselves.
wait, does it count if you're responding to do different ppl?
cos if it does, "whoops!".
btw, i think it speaks volumes that (so far) the majority of this thread has been spent kicking my ass around the block for a style infraction instead of discussing the far more interesting topic of the original poster.
-
To be fair the fact that this has been the subject of 16(!) straight posts is everyone's fault. (And yeah, I got a LJ in late 2003, senior year, 'cause a lot of my friends had one and it was another line of communication. I never paid that much attention to it. Before then, the internet was just a place for text-based MMOs to me and my nerdy friends. PM me what your point was if you think it's important.)
In my opinion, it's probable that somewhere in the process that led to these massive explosions, someone wanted them to happen, but there's no telling where or why. Something like that happening so close to such conflict just doesn't seem like coincidence, though. The simple kind of sabotage necessary for blowing up a munitions dump is the kind that could've benefited (or arisen from the spite of) anyone for any number of reasons ... so many situations could've made it easy for someone to want to do that on purpose that it's unlikely that it wasn't. (Or maybe I'm a bit saturated in international-intrigue thriller plot concepts.)
Anyway, I'm glad I'm not in Albania, and I hope Patrick stays OK.

amen to that.
*suddenly feels really old for having already resigned from the educational publishing world by the end of 2002*

You know what RefD, I was saying you should use some critical thinking skills to communicate effectively. Now I don't really care. You aren't listening to us, so I don't care if you go double post in other boards because I can't be bothered getting worked up over you.
You have been here since 2005 surely in that time should have noticed how anal-retentive some people are here, and how stating opinions that really have nothing to do with a thread which are definitely of a political nature don't go over well here. You could also go to "Hi, I'm New" and read the rules and tips for posters, where it states things like would avoid dramas such as these.
Or you could just continue trolling about. Whatever floats your boats. I have better things to worry about at the moment than your asshattery.
edit It took me two goes to get this posted, dammit with the quick replies

so stating an opinion and then refusing to defend or explain it is trolling?
thanks for that clarification.
-
I wouldn't say it's trolling, but it does remind one how 8 year olds carry out discussions.
Anyway, this thread has become fucking idiotic and you should all go to your rooms and think of what you have done
