Title: Heavy Metal - The Movie
Post by: Faker on 16 Mar 2008, 17:27
So apparently David Fincher is directing part of an animated version of the sci-fi fantasy mag Heavy Metal.

Not familiar with the source but a big fan of Finchers movies, so it could be interesting...

Sounds like there will be more than one director taking episodes in the movie - sorta like Sin City or The Animatrix. The first movie had a feeling of music videos from the 80s, so I'm sure the look is going to be a big ol' bag of mixed treats.

Yeah I worded my original post poorly, I am familiar with the original Heavy Metal movies (well I’m aware of their existence), just everything I’ve read about the version Fincher is part of doesn’t seem to indicate it is a continuation of those, more based on the magazine. Although again I don’t know how close to the source the earlier movies were.

The first movie was just like the magazines only there was a glowing green orb of evil linking all the shorts together. The second movie was one big plot where the chick had to get a cosmic key which oddly enough in the graphic novel was a glowing green shard, but a lame computer chip in the movie. Sounds like it is going to be like the first, which is awesome.

The first one was great because of the variety of styles in both animation and storytelling, as with the magazine.  The Loch-Nar (the glowing green orb) linking them together was kinda cheesy but well done for the most part.  Most of the stories were changed very little by having the green orb play a role.

The second movie had better animation going for it, but with just the one story, you either got into it or you didn't, and if you didn't, the movie failed.

I prefer the anthology style of the first one and, presumably, this upcoming one.

Any word yet on if this is cel or CG animation?

It had fucking better not be CG! I wouldn't mind if they made a few backgrounds CG(like in Aladdin, remember the lava scene? yeah that was fucking sweet) but if it is 100% CG I'll be pissed, and I'm willing to bet a lot of other Heavy Metal fans will be too.
