Whereas Jerusalem left me kind of bored, this version is a lot better and overall I'm getting totally owned by it. Riffs are bigger (and there's more repetition, yay), production is heavier and dirtier, and overall it's probably the best doom thing I've ever heard. My brain is totally numb right now, which can only be a good thing.
DISCUSS THE AWESOMENESS OF DOPESMOKER. (and if you don't know what I'm talking about, read up on a band called Sleep.)
THAT IS ALL
-
I downloaded Dopesmoker once and was completely unimpressed.
-
I don't find myself liking Sleep as much as I probably should. Don't know why, I just can't get into it.
-
on a scale of 10-10 how stoned do you have to be to appreciate this album
-
All I'm gonna say is, when the black amps split the sky, and the three wizards crowned with weed congregate around the riff-hewn altar wreathed in smoke, it just ain't

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Khar. That's my go-to stoner doom album.
-
i, too, was fairly unimpressed with Dopesmoker. don't get me wrong, it's pretty good. but not quite what it was made out to be by all the hype.
also; why have i not heard Electric Wizard? it would be appear that i need to listen to that immediately.

There is something wrong with you, dude.

I really liked it musically, but the vocals are just not that great. Commence to stoning.
-
Heh heh, stoning
Sorry.
-
I find Dopesmoker really relaxing, and particularly enjoyable.
And I don't even smoke.
-
Isn't that the one that is like one song, 1 hour and 20 minutes long or something?
-
Dopethrone is better than dopesmoker, but both are ridiculously awesome.
-
I recently got very much into Om, and as such I am feeling the need to go back and check out Sleep. I've also heard great things about Electric Wizard, so they're on that lengthy list of bands to investigate as well.
-
The amount of fail (read: people with terrible music taste) in this thread is giving me a headache.
Dopethrone is good, great even, but it isn't anywhere near as good as Dopesmoker.
-
I will fight you.

Actually listening to Dopethrone, it's pretty freaking awesome. I would argue, though, that it's for somewhat different stoner-ing purposes, Dopesmoker is clearly meant to be a religious experience, whereas Dopethrone is just about huge, huge riffs (there is a difference between riffs and religious-ness, however slight). Although I will say that the end of the 15 minute, 4 part epic on Dopethrone is probably better then Dopesmoker's clean part.
-
I listen to Dopethrone a lot more often than I listen to Dopesmoker (I listen to Come My Fanatics even more though).
That said, Dopesmoker is simply unfuckwithable in a lot of ways. I'm pretty sure that a heavier track has never been recorded. I'm pretty sure nobody's ever going to do what Dopesmoker does better than Dopesmoker. I'm pretty sure that it will never be obsolete. Things like that. The album was just so well executed that it's going to demand respect for as long as people smoke weed.
I will say some of those things about Dopethrone as well, don't get me wrong. It's just as much of a milestone. But there's a quality of purity about Dopesmoker that sets it apart.
I would be unwilling to say with any confidence that Dopesmoker is not the best album ever.

I don't think that's much of a point, really. Dopesmoker is one of my favourite albums but it's not something you can just put, say, when you want to do the dishes, or want some quiet reading music. Granted, Dopethrone isn't really like that either, but it's a lot more accessible and demands less attention.
-
Exactly. With Dopethrone I can just listen to Funeralopolis, or I can put on I, the Witchfinder for someone to show them what I mean when I talk about "doom," but with Dopesmoker there is really only one applicable procedure:
Steps 1 and 1-A (concurrent): smoke weed and listen to Dopesmoker at expense of all other activities.
-
I found out I have this on my hard drive today. So...
(waits for bluegrass track to finish)
-
This is probably going to come across as rude, and for that I apologize. I can't think of a better way to word my question, but I am asking out of genuine curiosity...
Is this the kind of music where you pretty much have to be stoned out of your mind to "get" or enjoy? Is that why when I listened to it I just kinda shrugged and moved on?
-
I have never touched drugs in my life, I don't even smoke, but Dopesmoker and Dopethrone are two of my favorite albums.
-
Yeah I barely ever touch weed but Dopesmoker is some good shit nonetheless.
It probably would be enhanced by a spliff or such but really the only pre-requisite for enjoying this album is an appreciation for huge, epic, heaviness.

It's tremendous on it's own (for the record, I made this thread whilst sober) but it's ahrd to deny that when you're stoned it's probably the best thing ever.
-
I probably listen to more stoner/doom than anybody on the forums (except for probably onewheelwizzard) and I don't smoke weed when I listen to it.
-

I have to say, yes, it'd be a dozen times better solely instrumental
-
Having read a little about the history of this album, how does Jerusalem compare to it?
Is it worth having or listening to Jerusalem when one already has and enjoys Dopesmoker?
-
Maybe I just wasn't in the state of mind to "zone out", but I found the first five minutes or so of the first track of Jerusalem incredibly boring, I couldn't stand it. Maybe if I were going to sleep or something, it would be better.
-
Hm. Well.
I think I have just done something many would consider insulting, pointless, or even sacreligious.
So I loaded Sonic Titan (bonus track on Dopesmoker for those who don't have it [for which there is little excuse, as a search of the Mediafire thread will give it to you]) into Audacity and sped it up by somewhere around 70 percent. I used the Change Tempo option, so as to not ruin the pitch.
Its quite interesting.
I would have used Dopesmoker itself, but Audacity crashed when I tried to import the song. I think the program knew what I was going to do... <.< >.>
It seems really short now (at about 5mins and 30secs).
