Title: Pennywise: Reason To Believe
Post by: GreasyPunk on 03 Apr 2008, 22:19
Yeah, the new Pennywise album, if you have listened to it what do you think?
I liked it, although it seemed more like Bad Religion than the older Pennywise albums.

Actually, where's Julia at all? She's one of the few women who spent a lot of time in the music forum. We can't afford to lose any!

I don't have any reason to believe that Pennywise is any good.

I remember thinking Pennywise was rad when ESPN came out with that snowboarding game. The one with "Society".

Ah, to be in the 8th grade again...

I used to really, really love Pennywise. I bought every album up to and including Straight Ahead. Then it dawned on me that they only had about three songs they kept endlessly repeating and I realised I ought to be spending my time more fruitfully listening to huge amounts of thrashcore. After that Pennywise just seemed a bit too limp, and I think it was their speed and rough edge comparative to the pop punk I'd previously been devouring that made them so appealing. Without that there wasn't a lot left, although Bro Hymn Tribute is still really fun to dance to when you're drunk and they play it in a club.

I will agree that their older stuff is pretty repetitive, and they are not my favorite band, however I really like the new album its different than all their older material.  More like Bad Religion than Pennywise, but at the same time, more melodic than Bad Religion.

Is this the free one? This album should've been called Fuck Thom Yorke.

I don't understand this 'more like Bad religion' bit. I always thought they sounded like a terrible Bad Religion tribute band? I don't hate Pennywise, they're easily avoided, so I can't say how much they suck, or really whether they suck at all. I just remember they were incredibly boring.

Well I can tell the difference between Pennywise and Bad Religion pretty easily, but when I first listened to their new album I had to double check and make sure it wasnt Bad Religion.

There was always quite a few similarities, they both had the whole Californian melodic hardcore with vocals soaring over the music thing going on (and in Pennywise's defense they have never made any bones about the debt they owe to BR). But Pennywise went more skate punk and you never needed to break out the dictionary to understand their lyrics. I have to say, the tracks I listened to from the new album sounded just like Pennywise did the last time I heard them, no more Bad Religion and no less. Admittedly I didn't listen to any all the way through since I was only checking them out through curiosity but still, it didn't sound like they'd changed the formula much at all. A little slower than the old days but that's been the case for a few albums now I think.

That should actually be the title of the next Bomb the Music Industry! album.
