I just saw part of VH1CL's "top 40 metal songs" out of self-loathing, and just like "what is emo," I just wanted to know what, exactly, metal music is. The songs I heard just sounded like sub-par hard rock.
I remember hearing, for example, that Freddie tried to veto "Gimme the Prize" because it was "too metal," but he didn't have a problem with "Hammer to Fall" or "I Want It All," did he? And he actually wrote "Innuendo."
I've heard Led Zeppelin called "the first metal band," and my guess would be that this comes mostly from "Kashmir."
And then there's "In Lust We Trust," which Microsoft calls a "metal" album - I can kind of see it for the first single (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY6zkwqyneY), but the second (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37Zd6pU3Mw0&feature=related)?

Don't take anything VH1 says too seriously. They're just not all too accurate.
As for firsts, the first one I can think of is Sir Lord Baltimore.
-
vh1 does have a history of making my head blow up by proving to me that these programs about "the greatest band the greatest songs blahblahblah" are obviously made by people who don't pay that close attention to music
aerosmith HIGHER than the rolling stones on the list???? *head whirrs and blows up*
-
Sir Lord Baltimore.
so good
-
Metal is some combination of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28YPsqVD2cc), this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqOJD_TdIKY) and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yM3XJZDV0Y).
Don't let anyone tell you different, buddy.

If you give rock 'n' roll some contemporary big balls you probably get metal.
-

How does the one on the left even avoid falling through the ceiling?
Alex, so AC/DC is metal? They have the biggest balls of them all, you know.
-
AC/DC like to pretend that they have big balls. But writing a song about it is pretty obvious compensation.
-
By your logic, Manowar is compensating for being unmetal. Do you want to revise your statement?
-
Wait, wait, run that by me again:
Are you doubting Manowar?
-
Metal fucking sucks.
-
Real Talk.

Metal fucking sucks.
Enemies of metal: YOUR DEATH IS OUR REWARD
...Kieffer, if a bunch of Canadians show up at your door..they may mean business.

If they are attractive canadians then yeah for sure I am totally down to have angry violent sex with them.
That is what you are talking about right?

I WISH YOU WERE DEAD
He is, well on the inside at least.
-
Wait, wait, run that by me again:

No, I am saying that by your logic, they are compensating for being unmetal. I am not saying that they are, merely using them as an example of your flawed logic.
They should still put some goddamn clothes on, though.

I dunno Keiffer. Are you a fan of beards and denim waistcoats?
-
Why would you post one of the few pictures in existance of Cam without a cut off denim jacket covered in patches...
Wool coat-thing != metal.
-

I think Manowar are doing us a social service when they sing about metal; no-one wants to hear about testicles but I'm pretty sure everyone needs to be educated about the benefits of heavy metal i.e kicking ass

*awesome periodic table of elements*
there are actually metal bands named Thorium, Lithium, Osmium etc.
-
I wonder... I have a placemat with the table of the elements on it, it is probably 12 years old by now, I wonder if it is out of date.
After I figure that out, I am going to have to find how many elements have been found since this report I have, just because I have nothing better to do than see how much scientists have figured out over the past 60 years.

Though est is correct as far as definitions of 'metal' are concerned, technically one should exclude the alkali and alkaline earth metals from 'Heavy Metal,' if not metal.
