Title: Cute rock/pop
Post by: Mattzors on 07 Apr 2008, 12:58
Lately I've been looking a lot for some love songs, but I dislike a lot of the more poppy ones. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'll Follow you into the dark by Deathcab for Cutie, or Such Great Heights by The Postal Service are examples of what I'm looking for.

I tried looking around, but I figured what better place to ask for suggestions than the QC forums. And where the forum topic is supposed to be Music Talk, I'm open for discussions as well. What's everyones favorite love song perhaps?

I go on and off it but '69 Love Songs' by Magnetic Fields seems like a pretty obvious starting point. See, because there's 69 of the damn things, what you're looking for is probably in there somewhere.

Oh man, this is totally my thread.  List of bands to check out:

The Softies
The Moldy Peaches (Hello, "Anyone Else But You.")
Belle & Sebastian
Beirut
Iron & Wine (Sam Beam does a cover of "Such Great Heights," as a matter of fact.)
Jens Lekman
Kings of Convenience (Don't quote me on this one, but they do some cute songs.)
Shout Out Louds
Wilco do some really adorable songs, too.
Ray LaMontagne

There are a handful of bands that sound "cute," but I'm not sure all of their songs are necessarily about love.

Shout Out Louds

This. Seriously.

I spent a period of two weeks, roughly, flip flopping between their new album and Howl Howl Gaff Gaff.  The latter is superior, but they are so wonderfully happy-sounding.

Sentenced - You are the One

if you want a more metal style to your love songs

One warning:  ONLY THIS SONG.  The rest of their songs aren't in any way "uplifiting" or "happy"

Hidden Cameras are pretty cute. They write songs about getting peed on, if you are into that.

You could do worse than check out Mull Historical Society - How Bout I Love You More.

Well, you could probably give Heavenly, Talulah Gosh, or Marine Research a shot. But if you really want to mix things up, you should probably try to find some Tender Trap.

I guess what I am trying to say is that there is nothing but endless variety in the Twee Pop genre.

CUB

Malorie and I uploaded their two best albums in the Mediafire thread.  Download them now.  They are cute AND have lyrics like "you fuck me on the floor 'cause there's no room for a bed".

CUDDLExCORE FOREVER.

See, I'm of the opinion that Our Ill Wills is better in every way (although better than awesome isn't saying terribly much), but then again, I usually gravitate toward the albums I hear first when it comes to making the distinction between good, better and best.

Anyway, there's just no way I can listen to "Impossible" and not experience a flow of warm and fuzzy from my ears to my toes.

Our Ill Wills has some seriously awesome tracks on it.  My personal favorite is "Tonight I Have to Leave It."  I can't sit still when I'm hear that song.  However, a large portion of the second half of the album borders on boring. :|

I knew that was Strawberry Switchblade before I even clicked on it.

You're gettin' predictable man.  Change it up!

Really? The only ones I could see fitting that description are "Ill Wills" and "Meat Is Murder," and maybe a little bit of "Hard Rain" (but only until it starts mixing things up). On the other hand, there are four or five tracks on Howl Howl Gaff Gaff I usually find myself skipping before they're through unless I'm not paying much attention to my music at the time... but whatever, to each his/her own.

Like nobody knew you were going to say Cub before looking in this thread.

You're both right though. Cub and Strawberry Switchblade are excellent ideas. I am surprised we've gone this long without a nod to Beat Happening though.

No one's mentioned Architecture in Helsinki?  Really?

Especially the (in)famous "Owls Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LyWzSOXdu4&feature=related)."

Shit, I was debating whether or not I should. Now that you have though, I will second it wholeheartedly. I hella dig the Beatles/Freddy Mercury allusion at the end.

Stars are "cute"?  Half their songs make me want to hang myself.  In a good way.
