Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good artists, I'm at somewhat of a loss as to what to listen to next.
I really like Tool and most of the stuff by Maynard Keenan, but unfortunately the sites I usually go to for similarities such as Pandora or Slacker label those bands as Progressive Rock only and keep giving me songs that involve nineteen minutes of some guy hitting a triangle at irregular intervals...
What I'm really looking for is something melodic yet hardcore, drums guitar vocals bass synth I like it all to be honest...Ashes Divide has recently become a new favorite.
If anybody could point out some good artists I might be missing, that'd be awesome, and even if its not like I described please refer it anyway! My tastes are wide and varied (I am known to be an avid fan of Russian Disco!)
Gracias!

You are obviously not listening to Mastodon.
Why are you not listening to Mastodon go fix that right now.
-
He might also like Hella, which I've been rocking the fuck out to recently.
-
All the various Devin Townsend vehicles, maybe not so much Strapping Young Lad.
-
Fuck that shit. Listen to Sigh. Imaginary Sonicscape onwards, not sure if you'd quite be ready for Hail Horror Hail without raping your mind a little.
-
That's great guys, keep em coming!
I thought Mastodon and sigh were a bit too extreme at first, but I did rather like them just the same.
Devin Townsend, you meant the Devin Townsend Band, cause I dont see anything besides that and Strapping Young Lad.
And I'm sorry, but I don't understand Hella at all. If I listened to the right band, There's no 666 in outer space is quite frankly just noise.
-
Well, well, okay, Zach Hill's still a better drummer than Danny Carey then, so hah!
Hold Your Horse Is is better than There's No 666 In Outer Space, anyways.
Just youtube Biblical Violence.
-
What exactly is it you like about tool? Is it the vocals, or the musicianship?
Because if it's the vocals you like you're probably better off going down an alternative "metal" route, whereas if its the musicianship it's probably more a prog metal type thing.
Maybe try Cog (http://www.myspace.com/cogrockmusic)? They're pretty similar all round, albeit a bit softer and more progressive.
[EDIT - Try Baroness (http://www.myspace.com/yourbaroness) and Minsk (http://www.myspace.com/minsk), too. ]
-
You'll probably be all 'oh the vocals are gay', but Cynic is rad.
-
I can't really describe exactly why I like Tool so much, but if I had to pick I'd say it was because of the melodic mixtures instrumentally coupled with the vocals, but focusing more on the instrumental nature of them. Ironically, the vocals are one of the main reasons I like Ashes Divide as much as I do.
Cog and Baroness were just about dead on, I'm liking what I hear, downloading Sharing Space and Red Album as we speak. I'm still undecided on Minsk, not quite sure what to make of them. It's certainly interesting, I'll grant that.
I found Cynic worth listening to, no, the vocals aren't gay =P
keep em comin, if you please! =)
-
Heh, yeah Minsk was a bit of a stretch. I just like to advertise them where possible, because I love them.
Perhaps Karnivool (http://www.myspace.com/karnivool) would be up your alley, too. It's kind of alternative/prog, like Tool.
-
It took all of ten seconds for me to fall in love with karnivool...
Have you some sort of instant messaging service? This might be easier via something more direct.
-
Actually, I'm pretty much out of suggestions. I'm not a big alternative listener.
-
Hmm, surprising.
I figured you were one.
Well regardless, thank you kindly for your suggestions, they will make grand additions to my growing collection of ear candy.
My hunger ain't sated yet, fellas, keep em comin! :)
-
Fuck that shit. Listen to Sigh. Imaginary Sonicscape onwards, not sure if you'd quite be ready for Hail Horror Hail without raping your mind a little.
The lead singer's laugh is fucking terrifying.
-
The End might be a good idea, sometimes they remind me of Tool a little. Mainly you should be listening to Magma though, since Magma are one of the best things ever and definitely the best prog of all time. Get Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh in your life, you'll be better for it.
-
I found The End a far too hardcore, though it's possible I just stumbled upon those few songs...I couldn't see any similarities to Tool at all in the songs I heard, I already forgot which ones they were, but they were from the album with the farmhouse/shack on the cover.
Magma wasn't exactly my cup of tea...I couldn't really explain why I didn't like it...I just didn't...makes sense in a stupid kind of way, doesn't it?
Lungfish I found rather compelling, but I can't say it struck me like Tool did when I first listened to them, or Cog and Karnivool did yesterday.
-
He might also like Hella, which I've been rocking the fuck out to recently.
I agree.
-
Try Russian Circles. They opened for Tool rrecently in Europe. It's really powerful instrumental stuff. Their drummer, Dave, is a helluva nice guy and the smoking-est drummer ever.
Also, if you like the Perfect Circle stuff, you may really like Failure's "Fantastic Planet," they share some members. If this does it for ya, try some Hum, also.
Maybe you would like Katatonia if you're more into the "metal" side of Tool.
-
Russian Circles is more post-rock but if you don't mind that their stuff is really ace! Their new album will probably interest you. It's in the mediafire thread. Just search Russian Circles or Stations.
-
High on fire? Isis? I find that if I'm in a tool mood, I'm in an isis mood, and I think isis is the better of the two, which is why I rarely listen to tool.
If you like insane technicality coupled with nice melodic sensibility then... Between the Buried and Me?
-
Have you listened to any of the bands that Tool has named as big influences on their music? Specifically, Meshuggah or King Crimson.
Another band that I find a lot of Tool fans seem to like despite having very different sounds is Dredg (http://www.myspace.com/dredg), one of my favorite groups. Other bands that Tool fans seem to enjoy include NIN, Deftones, etc.
Also, Billy Howerdel of APC just released an album like a week ago with his new band, Ashes Divide. Haven't heard any of it yet, so I don't know if it's any good.
I'd also second the Isis vote, and maybe add Pelican or Rosetta as well. Hmm... Opeth maybe? or Porcupine tree? Tool fans seem to enjoy them a fair amount too.
-
Porcupine Tree
-
I gave Isis, Between the Buried and Me, and High on Fire a listen, and I found them too metal for my tastes. Too much thrash, not enough melody imho.
I thought Meshuggah had a similar issue, and King Crimson didn't really resound with me.
Porcupine tree and Russian Circles I thought were quite cool. <--- More like this! =)
Ashes Divide's new album Just Keep Telling Myself It's Alright I thought was great, it's a lot more mellow than say, Tool or APC, which maybe is why I liked it to much.
Thanks for all the suggestions, so far I've found very much to my liking:
Baroness
Cog
Karnivool
Pocupine Tree
Russian Circles
Dredg
I think that I don't like Tool for its metal qualities, but rather for its melodic and progressive rock qualities, I'm actually not a big fan of metal.
-
Yeah, metal isn't for everyone I guess. I can upload any and all Dredg you might want to the mediafire thread if you'd like.
-
That'd be cool, but I have no idea on how to use MediaF!re, nor do I actually know what it is...filesharing I'm assuming? Is there a tut you could link?
I already have Catch Without Arms, what else am I missing?
-
Catch Without Arms is their most recent disc, and it's kinda different from their other two. A bit more mainstream of a sound, with really good catchy tunes. The other two (Leitmotif and El Cielo) are more, i dunno, experimental or artsy I guess. El Cielo and Leitmotif are definitely my favorites, but Catch Without Arms is still damn good.
Mediafire's pretty easy to figure out, you just upload a file to it and then people can download it from the link they give you. All you really need is winRAR for unzipping the files.
-
I tried to click one of the links, but it gave me an error message, so I assumed I was missing some program or something...if you wanna upload older stuff that'd be great!
It's in the mediaf!re thread I'm assuming?
Thanks!
-
make sure to change the "!" in mediafire to an "i"
-
I assumed as much, I just figured Id be cool like everyone else and use a ! =)
-
Actually it's programmed to do so even when you don't put it in
And actually I was talking about changing it back when you copied the link
-
Thanks, man, I got them both.
=)
-
Try Type O Negative, you probably wouldn't like their first album (Slow, Deep, and Hard), but I think October Rust and Bloody Kisses might be up your alley.
-
Try hiphop from the beginning
-
Hey there, This might be coming out of the completely wrong direction, but I recommend it to everyone, definitely fits the melodic-but-hard category:
Pixies, particularly Surfer Rosa
Well known band, but often overlooked in favour of newer stuff. Guess i'm just a retrophile
-
It's good, I'd recommend to him too, only he's asking for more Tool-oriented stuff.
-
Thanks, I have some stuff by the Pixies =)
And though I did start off this post asking for Tool-oriented stuff, I would like to say that I only did that because Tool is the only band I consistently am a huge fan of, other bands can be hit-or-miss.
So don't neglect putting up something that differs from Tool, case in point, I was looking through the MediaF!re thread and got the new Islands Album, which I really liked, and that's not like Tool at all.
So really, anything you think is good, I'll listen to anything once.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far =)
P.S. I'm getting a Best Of compilation of Type O Negative, thanks for suggesting it.
-
While we are recommending Australian bands that are pretty derivative of Tool in a lot of ways but are still pretty ok (we have a lot of them, especially in Brisbane for some reason)
Dead Letter Circus (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=23884344)
never (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=85006998)
Nucleus (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=82271013)
If you like Never's stuff on their myspace I can upload their EP for you to have a listen to, I lost Nucleus' EP about five minutes after I bought it and I'm not really enough of a DLC fan to bother buying their album.
Incidentally Karnivool are exceptionally rad.
-
I would suggest getting the Least Worst Of compilation rather than the best of, I am not sure which I really like better, but the best of was made by Roadrunner without TON's approval, I think they were even off of the label when it was made. Don't know how roadrunner didn't get sued to hell and back.
-
As should be recommended to any Tool fan, I am first going to recommend Om. They are kind of like Tool, but better.
Also, I cannot recommend Raped! by Dolphins enough as of late. Their recent self titled album was probably the best unrecognized album of the last year.
-
Can't say I like the name, but Nathan Rabin over at the AV Club really champions that album. So there must be something there to like, I suppose.

Karnivool are exceptionally rad. And so far I have noticed that Australian music kicks ass.
I liked Nucleus quite a bit, but I can't find it anywhere :( I keep getting some records from the late 70's, by a different band. Is there somewhere you know of that I could potentially download it? Paid or otherwise? Dead Letter Circus was cool, found them. Can't say I liked Never too much...
I couldn't find Om, can you link something?
I also can't find the Dolphins album...all of my searches result in the same video of the guy being humped by a dolphin.
-
Heres Om (http://www.myspace.com/variationsontheme). I'd say they're a lot more like sleep than tool.
-
Thanks for the link.
can't find any albums though, can someone perhaps upload them to the MediaF!re thread?
Would be very much appreciated =)
Id also like to take this moment to strongly endorse the new Islands Album, it's in the MediaF!ire thread go go download it now!
-
you may have seen my other thread for them, but i will recommend "3" to you anyways. proggish, metally but not all that heavy, upbeat, melodic, you might like these guys
they are hard to find on torrentz or limewire unless you know the album names. http://www.myspace.com/3 has a bunch of their songs, try listening to the first one all the way through, it combines two songs in one.
-
Russian Circles I thought were quite cool. <--- More like this! =)
Go listen to Don Caballero.
-

3 is great! Thanks! I'm having some trouble getting the torrent for The End is Begun, though...do you have a link perhaps?
Don Caballero is sweet...
EDIT: Any uploads to the MediaF!re thread would be awesome...can you upload your 3 stuff, Diablo? It's just so much easier to get it from there, the one 3 torrent I found seems to be broken =(
-
downloading music is bad!!
but here is where i got it from, hehehe
http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=the+end+is+begun
while i am at it, i recommend that website torrentz.com in general.
edit im not really sure how i would go about uploading it all, this is the specific torrent i downloaded a couple weeks ago, should work. sorry you are having troubles with it. if it doesnt work and you feel like walking me through it, id be glad to upload it.
http://www.mininova.org/tor/1015925
-
I can walk you through it, though it will be easier on some sort of instant messaging thing...do you have AIM, perchance?
-
nope, no aim here. did that torrent not work?
well if you want i can try it on MSN im [email protected]
if we could get it started soon that would be good though, its midnight and i need some sleep soon.
-
Ah, well my MSN doesn't work...
And, surprisingly, the torrent has started to...interesting. Seems to be working just fine, gracias!
You may sleep, good sir! =)
-
gracias! good to hear that worked. im glad you like the band. what type of music do you like or think you would like to like? i have quite an extensive music collection and would be glad to recommend more.
...tommorow.
sleepy time.
-
I am mostly a fan of progressive rock, though my mood really is a factor. I can get into the more hardcore stuff like Tool or APC but I also really like the more melodic upbeat progressive like 3 there.
Gimme what ya got! I'm ready lawls!
-
If you like progressive, try Savatage. Edge of Thorns and Handful of Rain specifically, you could try the other stuff, I am a big fan of Dead Winter Dead, you might like that one, but I doubt you would like their oldest stuff.
-
i just put up a fat list of the metal bandsi have and are available for upload onto the mediaf!re thread. comes with descriptionsa and all, take a look, easier than me recommending you each one.
-
If you'd upload some Ensiferum and Wintersun, that'd be great =)
Thanks!
-
funny you are the second person to ask for those two. they are already up, check the newest page.
-
Ah yes, I received them thanks!
Also, I'd like you to check out a group called Coheed & Cambria. Just youtube em, if you like what you hear, I can upload a few albums.
-
Um. Not to be rude or anything, but pretty much everyone here knows who Coheed and Cambria are.
-
He didn't include them in a list of albums he had available for upload, granted he didn't say that he owned only the ones he mentioned.
I just figured I'd suggest them, just in case.
To say everyone knows who they are is a rather unfounded generalization. Though probably more valid than ever now due to Rock Band...
-
If you'd been on this forum longer, you'd know that you can probably count the people who don't know who they are on one hand.
-
yeah, i have one of their songs (i didnt metion a few bands, escpecially the ones with only a few songs)
Welcome home i think is the name?i liked the song way back a few years ago before i got into metal, now it just irritates me. intros alright though. i checked some of their other songs out but they werent really my thing.
while we are one my upload list, general consensus on the mediaf!re thread is that requests (for things like mine, available downloads) should be sent by PM, to keep it from cluttering up. thanks.
-
Um. Not to be rude or anything, but pretty much everyone here who knows who Coheed and Cambria are wants them dead.
fixed.
-
That's not necessarily true. Only most of us. I can abide Coheed far more than Buckcherry or Nickelback.
-

i do not like this post. just because you dislike a band it does not mean they should be dead! really nobody deserves to die! this is not a good fix! i hope you do better next time!
plus their song welcome home is kinda good, even though the lyrics are horrible.
-
once that song gets past the intro it goes way downhill. lamest main riffs ever.
-
NOW GET IN THE GROUND
-
That's not necessarily true. Only most of us. I can abide Coheed far more than Buckcherry or Nickelback.
I have a beef with them. they are from where I grew up, as Shabutie. then they sold out and refused to play any shows in the area that is the sole reason they got signed and became all around dicks. except the bassist, he was still a good guy. Buzz Osbour...I mean Claudio, is an ass.
-
Hahaha.
Well I don't really care about what a band stands for or how they act as people...as long as the music sounds good.
Tool has a pretentious singer and a psycho-spiritualistic drummer. Doesn't bother me haha =)
-
If anyone hasn't said it yet:
KYUSS - if you can get past the singing
also:
Windmills by the Ocean - instrumental but kinda Tool-like at times
Ufomammut - Italian metal band
