Title: Not-So-Humble Opinions
Post by: juicebox on 21 Apr 2008, 19:26
My boyfriend's little brother has just started a blog, because he got sick of us beating him down at dinnertime when he tried to convince us that Julian McMahon is a towering thespian talent and Meatloaf is the greatest vocalist of our or any age. He's hilarious. He's going to get flamed.

Wow. Meatloaf? Really?

This is the same Meatloaf that sings "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and "I Would Do Anything For Love"?

Again, wow.

Although, his song in Rocky Horror is great.

he seriously tries to convince us of these things. he actually thinks Charmed is quality programming and "those three women are not only three of the most beautiful but also three of the most talented actresses on EARTH!!!!!1!"

here's his latest post:

Hallelujah

I've never been a huge fan of cover versions, but without a doubt, my least favorite cover version ever is Jeff Buckley's pitiful rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Buckley  turned this passionate religious classic into a sappy under produced love song. Cohen's version has him backed by an enormous choir and band, while Buckley's version only has him with an electric guitar, which makes it much less impressive. I mean, I'm not a religious person in the slightest but still, bigger is better.

It is a tragedy of the highest order that Jeff Buckley didn't cover I Would Do Anything For Love

I hate you right now, Tommy.

I actually thought this was a semi-common consensus?

John Cale's version from I'm Your Fan is pretty decent and I've heard a couple of others that are okay but overall nothing comes close to the original.

Damn right. The only bad thing about The Edukators is when they start playing it and it just won't fucking stop.

<buckley-derail>Simple, pretty, haunting as all shit, and oh my GOD it's leagues beyond that pisspoor version that Rufus Wainwright shit out for the first Shrek soundtrack.</buckley-derail>

Those are my exact feelings toward that film as well.

Man, i think the Cale version is a tad better than the Cohen one, but the original is far better than Jeff Buckley's. I may be biased because I don't like a single Jeff Buckley song though
Title: Re: Not-So-Humble Opinions

And I may be biased since I hate Leonard Cohen. I just know that Jeff Buckley's version of Halleluja is brilliant if you really want to cause tears in a crowd.
Hey if it's because it's bad or if it's because it's brilliant, I don't care.

Leonard Cohen's original version of anything is superior. Always.

SEE: "First We Take Manhattan."

I think Leonard Cohen is one of the greatest living songwriters, but I would rather listen to the I'm Your Man soundtrack than any one of his actual albums, any day of the week.

Also:
my Hallelujah preference = John Cale's version.

I prefer the Naomi Hates Humans version to Cale's. Anything will be better than Buckley's though.

The version I heard Cohen do, he just couldn't sing. Maybe he was trying to do something different for a live version, but I couldn't stand his "oh, I am not really going to sing, just kinda act like it."

Same feelings here about rufus wainwright's cover of "Somewhere over the Rainbow". compared to the original by israel kamakawiwo'ole, it's pure garbage.

wow, that bon jovi one was horrible.

Dude, are you kidding? "Over the Rainbow" is a Judy Garland tune. That's the whole reason Wainwright covered it.

id like to say that i was kidding, but i actually did not know that.
