Title: help with schecter guitars, please
Post by: becca1213 on 02 May 2008, 20:53
hey guys,

I'm not really a big music person, but I have to make a print ad for a class, and I got stuck with schecter guitars.  I've been researching them, but encyclopedias can only go so far.  Would anyone mind telling me what kinds of things are associated with schecter guitars versus other kinds of guitars?  Like, what is the first thing you think of when you hear the name schecter... that kind of thing.  Any information of that nature would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Cheap, well-made guitars that sound excellent for their price range.  Also, pointy headstocks.  Not as pointy as Dean guitars, though.

Oh, also metalcore.  Really poor metalcore bands play Schecter guitars for some reason.

They make me think of metalcore too actually, albeit in a more positive way. There's something about them that just looks like they were designed for tasty chug parts.

When I hear Schecter, I think of Stratocaster reminiscent guitar bodies with affordabley mean hardware and paint jobs that remind you you're mortal.

well, that's what they're going for! they are often stratocaster shaped, but rounder, and often shinier, too. black and red also come to mind.

"Bad Nu-Metal Bands" and "Pasty New-Wave Washup Who Does His Makeup With Powdered Donuts And Used To Play Good Music" is all I think about when I think Schecter.

I will admit that they have some really nifty designs that I wouldn't mind slinging on if I ever had the chance.

Basically, they're good, cheap guitars that get played by shitty bands because they are good, cheap guitars.  I have one.  I'm not in a band, though.

Yeah, Schecter seem to market themselves to the metalcore scene, even more so than say..Ibanez or ESP. I can't say I've ever heard anything bad about their instruments, though.

(I've played an Omen 6 and the old Terry Corso signature model. They were both pretty damn good for the price)

Basically.

That dude in Nevermore plays one. Jeff Loomis. He's crazy good.

Basically Schecter used to be a custom shop that went factory because business was good. They're primarily metal guitars, so they use active humbuckers, mahogany wood, slim necks (although thicker than some) and flashy finishes. One thing to note is that Schecter do not have an abundance of floating tremolo equipped guitars, which are prevalent in metal.

They're getting there. I saw a lot more trem-equipped guitars in this year's catalog, compared to last year's.

You know, I tried out a Schecter when I was in the market for a new guitar, which ultimately led to me buying my Gibson.

I think that speaks for itself.

shecters are a hell of a lot more reliable than gibsons these days.

schecters are famous for their seven string models, which have a 26.5 inch scale length rather than a 25.5(typical fender), so they have a really tight ballsy sound)
also have really amazing finishes, quality and hard ware for under a thousand dollars. you could get one gibson with more imperfections than three top end schecters put together for the same price. also for a primarily metal catering guitar brand, their shapes are fairly restrained and tasteful

playabilty wise they are very comparable to ibanezes and ESPs. very low and fast, 24 fret necks are the norm, high powered pickups, and eye catching construction. but a low end schecter will outplay a lowend ibanez imo

Sure, but Gibsons sound a lot better.

Having said that I'm quite the fan of Schecters; they do have a lot of tasty looking designs and good build quality. Borrowed a semi hollow orange schecter off a friend of mine for a few weeks a year or so back and was quite impressed. I find their necks kinda annoying, though, basically the closer the neck resembles a baseball bat the better for me (I have huge hands) and Schecter's are fairly insubstantial. Also, I'm only basing this off like 4 different guitars but they don't have a really meaty sound; maybe that's just because my Explorer has a massive amount of bass output so everything else sounds tinny though, I dunno.

Still, for a beginner/lowerend market they're pretty hard to beat. They just need better endorsees, that's all.

Gibson also look a lot better.

Actually most guitars do.

EDIT: the HellCat looks pretty cool though.

Every Schecter I've been able to touch plays like a dream and sounds fantastic. So fantastic, in fact, that I own one. It's my downtuned metal guitar, sitting on C# tuning right now. It's super-brutal and chunky-sounding and the EMGs go hand-in-hand with the tuning.

This post sounds like a huge plug, but Schecter basically do no wrong. I am playing mine right now to make absolutely sure, but like the Gibson SG is the Best Rock Guitar, the Schecter Hellraiser is the Best Metal Axe. Maybe apart from anything ESP touches. Some Ibanez guitars are pretty rockin' too.

Point is, Schecter are fantastic.

Yeah I kinda really want a Damien 7 now. I had this fantastic idea of tuning down to C standard, and then tuning the low B UP to C, to get a massive low-end drone.

Aren't Schecter and ESP owned by the same parent company? I think that general insane crazy man and owner of "the largest guitar shop in the world" Ed Roman once made that claim.

In any case, there are definitely some pretty Schecters, I think that they even used to produce a Mustang look-a-like that looked nifty.

I'm not so sure about that Rickenbacker-esque one, but I thought I'd just post it anyway.

Oh man. I spent an entire day on Ed Roman's site once. It was almost as good as that Great Kat interview.

Every Schecter I've played has been very nice. Only complaint is that the cuts of the bodies and headstocks usually give them that "budget PRS" look which I don't really like, but that is just personal taste and apparently they ARE capable of shaking things up, because wow those three in the picture two posts up... I am aching to play them. Even the Rickenschecter, yes it begs to be touched.

I typically think of Pete Townshend.  While I hate him as a guitarist, I love the PT teles.  Also, I think of Jawbox, as they were endorsees.

Schecter's American-made stuff is phenomenally good, but quite expensive. The cheaper import stuff has its ups and downs, but the build quality is generally pretty solid, and they use good electronics.

One of my guitars is a schectre.  I heart it.  For a guitar that I paid 250 dollars for it sounds like a 600 dollar guitar.  I came across the brand because of the Dismemberment Plan.  Travis used, and still uses, a schectre.

That's possible?

To hate Pete Townshend's guitar playing? Or to love PT teles?  Or to do both simultaneously?  I can honestly say I am living proof that both are possible.

I don't like schecter too much, but then again of only played their "BR00T41!" guitars. The guy who posted the photos of the PT Tele and the Airline type guitar look rather nice though.
