Title: Good Organizations to Donate to
Post by: Emaline on 09 May 2008, 00:17
So, next month I will be hosting a fundraiser. We will be holding a raffle. I'm looking for some good charities for us to donate the proceeds to.

So far we are considering:
Heifer International (http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.204586/k.9430/Gift_Catalog.htm?msource=kw1844)
The Twin To Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation (http://www.tttsfoundation.org/)
Oceana (http://www.oceana.org/international-home-nao/)

Any other ideas?

St. Jude's Children's hospital is my charity of choice.

I usually go with St. Jude's or Doctors sans Borders.

like i mentioned in the charity auction thread, i really like oxfam (http://www.oxfam.org/).

how can you not like a humanitarian organization that makes ads like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnb30oGR3Lk)?

The second link is still their main page, not the specific ad.

Perhaps I'm callous, but when I read the original post my first thought was "they cannot be real charities".

My current charity of choice is the Aplastic Anaemia Trust (http://www.theaat.org.uk/), because it saved the life of a truly rocking musician recently. It's a fairly small charity because it's a fairly rare disease.

child's play

I just have to say that a charity that provides toys for children in hospital seems a bit stupid to me when billions of people don't have access to proper healthcare and there's a huge amount of medical research that needs to be done.

Though I agree that there may be more objectively worthwhile causes, you can make that argument about almost any charitable contribution.  Sure, healthcare's important, but there are children starving in Africa.  Sure, children in African are important, but we've got at least as serious problems within our given nations.  Sure, spina bifida is a serious problem for people who have it, but you're going to probably be benefitting more people by donating to a homeless shelter.  Sure, bums are down on their luck, but there's got to be someone out there who's closer to dying.  And so on, ad nauseum.  To some extent, I think you've got to pick a cause you feel is important and then not worry too much about it.  People all over the world are in need of financial support, and any given contribution will improve someone's life in some way.

Yeah but it's cheaper to be cynical and fatalistic.

I'm biased in favour of Doctors Without Borders... and lately I've also been thinking that alzheimers research could do with a lot more money.

But I think you should also look around for good LOCAL projects :)

The only problem with doing something local is that I will be traveling from St. Louis, MO to Columbia, SC for this. So doing something local is slightly out of the question. One of the reasons I like Oceana is because is benefits the sea, and we are going to be in SC, which is a coastal state.

But thanks everybody for your suggestions. Moo, Oxfan looks good. It reminds me of Heifer International. For some reason I really like organizations like that.

I generally donate to causes that are kind of specific and focused on groups of oppressed peoples, like Tibetans, Palestinians, etc. I just have a thing for underdogs I guess.

I also give a fair amount of money to charities for wounded animals. It normally takes quite a bit to make me cry--I didn't at my grandmother's recent funeral, for instance--but whenever see an advertisement for animals that have been abused (showing videos of a cat who had its eye gouged out by its owner, a dog whose leg was purposely broken and sawed off, etc), I immediately break down crying and wind up donating.

I guess overall it's that I donate to people and animals who have been victimized/abused.

My family's done Heifer Int'l for years for X-Mas.  We all really like it, there's something nice about getting a card that says "Thank you for the goat!"

I think we are going to do TTTS, and Oceana this time around.

But, I'm looking into getting the appropriate licenses and whatnot, so I can do this more often, on my own, locally(And maybe sometimes not so locally!). This time, we are going through the Wishlist Foundation, which is this thing run by fans of Pearl Jam. Long story short, my mom is a huge Pearl Jam fan, and I got wrangled into helping her host this benefit. I don't mind, because I love doing things like this, but I need to find away to not do it just during Pearl Jam concerts.

I read that as "I think we're going to do TITS" but I'm not even embarrassed, because I know all of you did, too.
