The challenge is pretty self explanatory. Or slightly less so. Find some free time this month to write and record an album in less than 24 hours.
The requirements are that there is 30 minutes of original compositions. That is the only requirement. Anything else goes.
Then, when you're sure it's done, post the result! It doesn't matter if it's terrible.
It could be a concept album played entirely using spoons or kitchen utensils, a 30 minute spoken word piece, a short story rehearsed with friends with musical interludes, even 'thumping techno' if that's what you're into.
I'm in. Who else is?
-
Can I do it as real songs, but using Guitar Pro (I'll export it as a MIDI file I guess)? The only mic I have is attached to my headset, and that barely even picks up my own voice, let alone a guitar.
-
ANYTHING goes. You could make an album using nothing but msn sound effects, it's still valid.
-
In. Expect something mid-late next week.
Maybe I'll bust out the "News At Six Foot One" idea.
-
Maybe some other time. :-( School owns my soul.
-
Maybe some other time. :-( School owns my soul.
Yeah, can we come up with more brilliant ideas when it's not the middle of exam period?
Brilliant idea.
I would be in if it wasn't for aformentioned exams.
-
If we postpone it then we can't use the catchy tagline. We'll do another in July.
-
If we do it in July I'm just going to record the Boris show I go to and post that up here.
I mean uh..
..Nah.
-
I'm in.
-
I think I might have a bash at this next week. It's an excellent idea.
-
I'll give it a go, I'd love to know what I come up with.
-
I'll give it a shot. Would it be okay if it were slightly under thirty minutes?
-
It would be better than nothing, but you'd be kinda missing actual point of the challenge. Which is to produce 30+ minutes of music. If you can't manage 30, get involved anyway, because it's fun! You just won't have completed the challenge.
-
i recently befriended a a really talented bagpipe player so i'm so going to try to be in on this.
-
Oh dear god please don't play pebroch. Not even excellent pipers can make that sound good.
-
i don't know what that is but i'm assuming it's a pre-existing piece of music, which is something we won't be playing.
-
Yesssssssssssssss. I'm in. Although I would need to purchase some recording stuff first.
-
I am buying a pair or drumsticks today just because of this thread. I do not have a drumset, but I will find something to bang on and make noise with.
-
There is now a facebook group. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13627938406)
A blog is gonna made to host the entries in one place.
-
I am not on Facebook. :-(
-
It's okay. You'll be alright.
-
I am not on Facebook. :-(
I feel like every time you post, I should point out that everything in Vermont is made from maple syrup, pine trees, or ice cream. But I can't think of anything for this one.
-
I'm starting...now.
-
I have an amazing idea which will be executed this weekend.
-
I can't do it right now, because there is a show that I am doing tech work for
but I will have my guitar with me afterwords, at 2 am, and i will start writing songs!
This is totally doable.
-
I'm so in (unless I'm too lazy).
-
There is now a facebook group. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13627938406)
Hey, it's people from the internet, slowly turning out to be real people.
I'm in. Fuck exams.
-
To the people who say "exams", I say "it's ONE day".
-
If I had the means to even record just myself and one instrument, I'd totally do this in a second.
-
I don't think that's an excuse, really. As long as you have a sound card that allows input, the only other requirement is a £10 headset with a mic attached.
-
I'm down. Sounds fun.
-
I don't think that's an excuse, really. As long as you have a sound card that allows input, the only other requirement is a £10 headset with a mic attached.
Yeah, that'd be a luxury, wouldn't it?
Trust me man, I would - and have - record gangsta rap to a beat slapped on a fucking biscuit tin if this computer would let me, but for some reason it just won't let any sound into it and I've given up trying.
Once I get my own goddamn computer though... watch out, mu'fuckassssss.
-
If you want to take that a step further, many headphones work as microphones when connected to the input jack. Terrible quality, but we're not exactly shooting for quality material here. Be creative. I'll wager your mobile phones have mics too.
-
Does recording with at least one other person count any?
-
You can record with an orchestra, it all counts. Like I said, anything goes.
-
Once my exams are over, I'm so in.
-
Now, are you giving us a single day, like, twenty four consecutive hours, or can we split it up as long as we don't go over the twenty four hours. Like, say, for the last three weekends of May (I'm just guessing, I can't tell how many are left), myself and whoever I was working with put eight hours of work in on three consecutive Saturdays. Is that against the rules? 'Cause it's hard to stay up for twenty four hours straight.
-
If I find the time, I'm in.
-
I am going to attempt this, if for nothing else for the experience of actually making myself write songs. Results may not be internet-worthy (and yes, i realise that is a BIG call).
-
I'm in too. I think the 24 hours split up over the course of May is a good idea. I think it would increase the quality of output.
-
Again, I feel that's missing the point somewhat. It's an exercise in creativity more than anything, and stretching it out gives you a lot more time to think about what you're doing, whether you consciously use that time or not. That said, it is completely at your discretion how you choose to complete the challenge.
Basically, if exams are putting strain on you, then by alls means take a break if you need it, but keep in mind what the actual challenge was. I expect maybe a quarter of the people saying they're up for this to actually follow through, but if leniency encourages more people to take part, then by all means, distribute your 24 hours over another time-span.
I'm in too. I think the 24 hours split up over the course of May is a good idea. I think it would increase the quality of output.
Quality is not the goal here! It's creativity! I don't expect all that much fantastic music to come out of this.
I'll be heading out in a few hours to buy percussion instruments made of candy. My entry should be up by Monday night.
-
Should we be able to reproduce the music after recording?
As in, should all the chords etc be written down?
-
Why would you need to do that? You can improvise the entire thing while binging on drugs and not remember doing it the next day, it's all still valid!
The ONLY requirement, besides the time limit, is that the final product is 30+minutes in length of original material. Loops and samples are acceptable.
Be creative, go nuts.
Edit: If I start today, then I have 2 hours tomorrow to buy this:
(http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/814/photo0022ha4kg6.th.jpg) (http://img361.imageshack.us/my.php?image=photo0022ha4kg6.jpg)
£2.50!
Then I'll have 2 more hours left to write and record with it.
-
I'm trying to get as many of my friends who play instruments to help me, and I'll pick a day and place that suits as many of us as possible, then we're getting lots of coffee and food, and we're staying up for 24 hours straight writing and recording.
However, I am very skeptical it's actually going to work out.
-
I actually have a piano to access, but due to my lack of understanding music theory, I will probably not succeed. Whatever. :P
-
Yay!
I can't wait to make
completely horrible
music.
It's ever so much
fun, fucking around with
music,
maybe I'll find some friends
and we'll fuck around
together,
Maybe even record
music
instead of just getting
fucked up and strumming
I'm in a poem mood today...
-
This should become something like that book writing thing in December(I believe it is?)
-
This sounds like ridiculous amounts of fun. Expect something from be soon!
-
So I was out till 5 am last night after the show and didn't get to my actual instruments until 2:29 PM so I am going to have to postpone this temporarily. graughuahga
-
I've reached a snag too. Samaritans is shut on Sundays, but on weekdays I work between 10:00 and 12:00. Coincidentally, these are the shops opening hours. If I want that toy, I either wait until Wednesday, or send my sister on an errand to buy it. Wednesday is my day off work, so if I start on Tuesday afternoon I'll get the full 24 hours. Thursday is my deadline for having uploaded my album. Khar should have finished his, so there should be at least two completed albums by the end of the week.
-
I leave town on thursday and don't get back until sunday, so I think the only real possibility for this is skipping wilco on wednesday and recording it then.
I am totally going to do this.
-
WHY WOULD YOU SKIP WILCO?
-
I like this idea. I suggested unicorns and a middle earth saga with D and D members, cloaks and what not.
But what about doing this again? Only with a theme in mind...like only using sounds/lyrics of the sounds/words you hear around you every day. And just hope someone says something creative.
P.S. don't skip wilco.
-
only using sounds/lyrics of the sounds/words you hear around you every day.
I had this same idea for one of my songs. I am going to take my tape recorder to school and record noises and words and try and make something of it!
-
my friend said the line "I could never be in love with somebody, who didn't like mangos and who took me so seriously"...and it's now the chorus to one of my new songs
-
WHY WOULD YOU SKIP WILCO?
Actually the way the schedule works out I can probably fit Wilco in
-
Grif, you aren't free again for the next month? Come on man. Go to Wilco for sure.
-
I AM IN.
(funnily enough i should be going into a studio with my band sometime next week)
although ill probably do something else for this instead.
-
^yeah I was in the studio last thursday recording my bass parts for a few of my band's songs... but I want to make this all solo stuff - see how far i get.
So far it looks like I will be making noises with the following:
-Fruity loops
-Banjo
-P-bass
-Piano accordian (got it today, have NO IDEA how to use it yet)
-Sqier Strat
and recording them with my Zoom H4.
Things could get messy.
-
I've decided I can't let you twats have all the fun.
I have reformed my comedy band, INABIAL, who split a couple years back, and today we had our first couple of hours. We have a phenomenal workrate - becuase we play and record badly - and it's going to end up being fucking epic. And I'm going for a full hour instead of 30 minutes. Songs set to be included are: 'Undressing In The Dark' parts one and two, 'Pretentious, Moi?' and possibly 'Cats That Look Like Hitler,' but that one's a bit shit even by our deliberately bad standards, so it'll probably get cut.
-
Grif, you aren't free again for the next month? Come on man. Go to Wilco for sure.
it is either wednesday, or I don't get an opportunity to until the very last couple of days, I guess. I just bought my wilco ticket though and I'm driving other people to it so I'm slated for going. I just hope they play Pot Kettle Black.
-
Sorry about the delay guys, my laptop charger went kaput and I had to go buy a new one. Anyway:

Also remember in the mediafire you've got to swap the exclamation mark in mediaf!re for an i.
-
the last 7 minutes are silence!
other than that, pretty neat.
I also just wanted to report that I just came to the realization that I packed away my drum sticks in preparation for moving.
Damn.
-
the last 7 minutes are silence!
They weren't supposed to be, but by the time I came to the mastering stage, I thought my arms were five metres long and my computer was screaming at me. I would have put something in, but that would have meant breaking the 24hr rule.
Consider it a jazz improvisation on 4' 33".
-
I am so glad that I'm at home right now. I am totally bringing my high-tech toy keyboard back to Fargo so I have an instrument. I shall maybe join the fun?
-
This should become something like that book writing thing in December(I believe it is?)
NaNoWriMo? November.
Also, are totally improvised covers okay? Because I get the feeling I may wind up resorting to that for at least a few minutes when the time comes around... :|
-
I'd rather you didn't, but if you really really must or really really want to, I can not stop you!
-
Okay I think I'll be able to whip something up after May 24 cause I have to study/take exams till then. I also need to pick up an old tape recorder.
-
Should I feel inadequate over the fact that I'm planning on just doing this with my acoustic guitar and a standard microphone?
'Cuz I don't.
-
Hey, man, to each their own. Do your thing, not what you think would be the coolest.
I have until 5:50 tomorrow night to complete my album. I have a one minute track. Also, I'm not going to call this album "music" so much as "artistic sound".
-
I used A-Mail to buy the music toy thing I showed you on the last page. It's pretty loud, but the sound quality on it is terrible, it has a one octave keyboard that you can't change the settings of, only the tone, has no sustain and only plays the note for about a second. It had a small library of sound effects, included techno drums, traffic noises, sirens, scratching records etc, several horrible obnoxious techno beats pre-programmed into it and a disc on the top that plays one of two programmed sound effects depending on which way you spin it.
It's a horrible cheesy techno music generator in the form of a children's play toy.
I intend to record at least one song using it, if not an entire album.
-
Sox, that instrument sounds awesome. Any plans to circuit bend it? It sounds like an ideal candidate.
It reminded me I've got a beat up Yamaha PortaSound I found on the street, which I might use to have a crack at this album thingy this weekend.
-
I daren't! Maybe someday in the future when I have more confidence, or when I find somebody with the right tools and experience.
-
Should I feel inadequate over the fact that I'm planning on just doing this with my acoustic guitar and a standard microphone?
'Cuz I don't.
If I could record without hiss, I'd do that.
-
Yeah, I'm probably gonna do the same thing, but with a piano
-
Yeah, I'm probably gonna do the same thing, but with a keyboard set to piano and maybe drums
-
The more I record, the less my album makes sense.
-
Okay so it turns out I'm recording with my two friends, one who plays guitar and one who plays drums.
Expect the stuff from us to be fucking weird.
-
The more I record, the less my album makes sense.
Same. It's not helping that halfway through a song, something changed (with the mic? amp? guitar? no idea) so now my guitar tone completely changes half way through the song. oh well.
-
Okay so it turns out I'm recording with my two friends, one who plays guitar and one who plays drums.
Expect the stuff from us to be fucking weird.
I actually expect 90% of the musical output of this thread to be fucking weird, judging by the posts in it.
-
As do I.
However I expect my submission to be musically unenjoyable. Seriously. Me and my friend have done the type of musical jam we are doing for this before. It is one giant cacophony.

I actually expect 90% of the musical output of this thread to be fucking weird, judging by the posts in it.
I expect 90% of the musical output of this thread to never show up. Y'know, based on previous experiences with internet commitments.
See you, folks! If I keep posting, it'll be sporadical, I'm starting now right after I grab some caffeine drinks.
Catch y'all on Friday.
-
This should become something like that book writing thing in December(I believe it is?)
There's already RPM - Create an album in the month of february.
-
I daren't! Maybe someday in the future when I have more confidence, or when I find somebody with the right tools and experience.
Fixed. Everyone knows that experience is the last thing you need when circuit bending. The less you know, the better!
-
Yeah, but this thing is glued shut. I'd like somebody that has experience taking things a part so as not to shatter the decades old plastic casing.
I've run into a pretty big problem with one of my guitars. It's the one I was going to use for finger picking. A steel string acoustic guitar, I just restrung an hour or two ago. I moved down a few gauges in string size because I play a lot lighter than I did when I opted to buy the 'Not even Slinky' and I wanted a different tone. Now the first four frets of the E and A strings buzz loudly, as do random frets littered around on B and e.
Suggestions?
-
Raise the action? You'd have to let the neck settle for twenty-four hours, though. :|
-
Okay, I had a read of this "fret not" guitar repair site, and it sounds like it could be any number of things. But I am not qualified to make ANY of these adjustments. I'll take it to the store once I am able to afford the necessary adjustments. Which could be a while, I am penniless and make about £25 a week. Any more suggestions?
-
Play softer? You said you were fingerpicking it.
(I am just throwing out random suggestions.)
-
You probably fucked up cutting the excess off the strings and slightly unwound the outer wire coil.
-
I haven't cut off the excess, but you're talking in a language I don't understand now. I'm gonna take it to the store for a set-up and ask if I can watch everything they do for education purposes.
What this means to you guys is that I can't finish my album unless I come up with another idea.
-
I'd just opt for a clean electric to finish it up, if you can do that.
-
I have an intonation problem on my strat past the 12th fret. I could probably work around that, but I've never really played through an amp before...
Could be interesting!
-
I uh... I uh didn't get a whole 30 min, just 15-16. (This is hard when you have to go to class and therefore have to get some sleep. So. Should I just finish it up or post what I have? I think I'd actually like to try this again on a day I have completely free, but I am just busybusybusy right now.
-
Upload the 15 minutes. But only send it to me :-D That way, you can cheat by not starting from scratch next time and nobody will know but me.
Try again whenever you feel like it.
-
I was going to start on it today but then I realized if I do that I don't get extra time from being off work tomorrow for some messed up reason.
TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND
-
I have no idea how I'm going to communicate with everyone I want to involve in my and coordinate them on a single day, so I am planning on doing a really low-key, ambient album by myself.
-
I'm not linking it, but if anyone wants to listen to my 15 minutes, PM me and I'll send you the link. When I have a whole day to myself, I'll go for a whole 30+ min of mostly new material (I like some of the tracks I worked on as is).
-
Link it!
Or send it to me. I'll PM you just to make sure.
-
Who wants to do a duet Michael Jackson cover album using pots and pans? We could call it "Michael: King of Pots".

AND!!!!
Production Meeting: The Making of "The News At Six Foot One" bonus EP
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?3woddpcz12j
I started at 10:35 yesterday morning and finished around 9:30 last night. 11 hours!
-
I hope not everyone makes an ambient one. yes, it's the easiest to do, but hell if I'm going to listen to hours of possibly very low quality ambient. (not making any comments to any one in particular; my broadband is currently capped so I haven't downloaded anyone's, I just have the feeling that everyone is going to do ambient).
Expect some low quality doom/sludge/nadja-ripping stuff off me next week, though. It's going to own your butthole(s) so hard. SO hard.
-
I can assure you the stuff I'm doing isn't ambient.
It is, however, crap. But that is deliberate. We take in punk, metal, reggae, dance, country, acoustic balladry and some kind of bizarre electro-rock genre we invented that is mostly based on this keyboard Mark bought for £1 at one point.
-
My bonus EP has two ambient tracks, but everything else is raping-your-ears guitarness.
Frig, there's a little punk thrown in. if you can play punk tuned CCFBbEbG.
-
Sorry,
I'm doing ambient,
but I think It will be interesting,
or at least I
hope so.
-
Were you trying to post in haiku?
-
Nah, that's Albatron. Albatron is poetic.
Edit: I plan on more than one album, none of which I'd describe as 'ambient'. I'm waiting for a guitar set-up so I can record a straight forward, mostly instrumental guitar album, I'm waiting for somebody with a nice voice and a knowledge of Michael Jackson for the previously mentioned cover album, and another which will be a long single piece of music improvised over a CD of public domain ambient noises and sound effects from the BBC.
-
Most of the 15 minutes I did could be described as ambient, I guess, but 3 of those tracks are recorded sound and only 1 was composed with the purpose of being ambient. Mostly because I wanted a sleepy sounding track.
-
I thought the songs were really cool. The noise was just sort of atmospheric, and not really entertaining. I liked what you did, though.
-
Were you trying to post in haiku?
If i was trying
to post in haiku, I would
have done it like this.
If I can find a good way to incorporate my poetry into music for this, it'll be much better than the ambient/drone stuff I was messing around with.
-
The noise was just sort of atmospheric, and not really entertaining.
If I'd had a better mic, they would have been better. The concept behind them got lost. :-(
-
Can I record a cover of a Modest Mouse song if it doesn't count towards my thirty minutes?
-
That fits in with the rule, sure.
-
The noise was just sort of atmospheric, and not really entertaining.
If I'd had a better mic, they would have been better. The concept behind them got lost. :-(
You're track three was pretty awesome though.
-
I think the funniest thing about this challenge is that Linds and I practically made the same track. We rock that hard, guys. That hard.
-
Indeed.
-
Incentive for people to come to Tronnocon: We will be PERFORMING said track.
Oh maaaaaan. Show of the decade.
-
I'll play the computer! (Basically click play and sit behind my laptop bobbing my head.)

This could only be a Rickroll.

Not really.

-
I'll play the computer! (Basically click play and sit behind my laptop bobbing my head.)
See, that's the exact same thing I did. I just made mine sound all fuzzy.
-
I have no idea which album I'm gonna record, but I promised Shane and Linds I'd start at midnight tonight. I think that compared to most of you guys, I have a more than ideal set-up:
How many of these instruments do I actually know how to play? Well, I like to think I've gotten pretty good at the pots and pans.
-
Damn you. I wish I had a ukelele.
-
So first Linds and I are loop buddies, and now Darryl's got the same amp that I do.
Guys, we gotta do some different stuff, seriously.
-
Darryl, that is an impressive set-up. I am jealous.
-
Damn you. I wish I had a ukelele.
They cost like, two bucks. Even half an ass's worth of effort would get you one.
-
I am HELLOF doing this next week (or actually it's the week after) when I crash my friend's house and demand the usage of his microphone. We were planning on recording some stuff anyway so this is a good opportunity.
Expect some shouting and weird noises, he's very experimental. Also I can't write songs.
-
I just finished, and right within the deadline. It's almost all crap, but that's okay.
I'll upload it when I get back from work. EDIT: Whenever I find my flash drive and/or don't hate it. Have a placeholder.
EDIT UPON EDIT: Nevermind, I'm never putting it up.
-
On the one day this week I had free to do this, my housemate left the other dynamic mic at work. Damn his hide. Also, he took the goddamn M-box, so I can't use any of our condenser mics either. My effort will be somewhat delayed.
-
Damn you. I wish I had a ukelele.
They cost like, two bucks. Even half an ass's worth of effort would get you one.
Where? The only ukeleles I can find are at the guitar shop and the cheapest one is like, sixty bucks. And it sounds like shit. The nice ones are like, two hundred dollars.
-
I got a $20 dollar 'toy' one, and it's great fun. It's got a really unique tone.
-
So I will try to do this when I get back home next week. Still need to scrounge up the 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter to plug my keyboard into my PC's line-in jack, but if worse comes to worst I can just buy a new one somewhere. Once I'm home and ready I should have time to do this... hopefully... before I get my wisdom teeth out on the 29th... but then I can always just record instrumentals at that point.
-
ok I'm probably going to end up doing this 24 hours straight, as my new delay pedal comes on the 30th of May and I think my keyboard just died :(
-
Guys, I just got a call from my friend saying that he's going to be picking up my computer for storage later today (which is three days earlier than I expected, I started about 4 hours ago), and since I'm heading out of town to where there is no internet I won't be able to finish. So I'm going to upload the song that I have in a bit.
I really wish I could finish it, but this guy is doing me a huge favour by taking care of all my stuff over the summer so I don't want to inconvenience him.
EDIT:
Here it is, it's a ten minute track, it was to be a concept album, but because of the time cut, it's just the beginning. You can expect the rest of it some time when I have a computer again (possibly July?) for a continuous period of about 18 hours.
http://www.mediafire.com/?azjsmpdzqnm
-
Consider my 24 hours started as of this minute. When they'll end? NOBODY KNOWS!
-
Update 2-(God I hope I'm in the right thread this time)
6 hours in, I have four songs written. I'm pretty pleased with three of them, but I'm not sure how I should record them. I still have 18 hours left for that though. I'd like the guitar to sound 'clear' and not 'blurry' like it currently does, and I'm not sure how to work around that. I haven't used the pots and pans yet, or the ukulele, or anything other than the two acoustic guitars.
I took a three hour long break when I got frustrated and decided to eat dinner and listen to music for a while.
-
My regularly scheduled setbacks are now complete! well, except for the theatre banquet tonight. Which I'm going to work around. By starting right after it.
Even though I should be writing a paper about Naked Lunch as a future-terror exaggeration of the soon-to-be American Dream.
-
Update 3-(Man, I'm beat)
at 9 hours in I had 11 songs at what'll be approximately 35 minutes. I used only the two acoustic guitars and there's one little Ukulele tune on there. My timing is awful and I flub far too many notes to record them live, so I plan on record as many of the parts as I can as loops and constructing the album like a jigsaw. I hope that sounds okay. I've still got to revise the song titles and lyrics, as well as find a name for the project and the album.
-
It's almost all crap, but that's okay.
EDIT UPON EDIT: Nevermind, I'm never putting it up.
What?! No! You tease! You're like that girl you hook up with but who never takes her bra off because she thinks her nipples are too small or something. You're like the dude that wears shorts in the shower at the gym because he's worried other dudes will laugh at his junk. You're like your favourite band you go to see live and they say "Hey, this is a new song" and after tuning up they say "Actually, we're not gonna play that one".
You hated it THAT much? Well, fine...
...EVERYBODY STOP! STOP RECORDING! Challenge is over! No more entries accepted! That's right, GenericName has RUINED it by not uploading his album.
Edit: Actually, that's a lie. Challenge is still on. Back to work guys.
-
EDIT UPON EDIT: Nevermind, I'm never putting it up.
A brother playing pussy is a brother that's getting screwed.
-
No, that was less "I hate it soo much" than "In a freak accident known as 'I forgot to unmount my flash drive before removing it', half of my material disappeared".
Here's 12 minutes of it, though.
nope!
-
Okay I'm starting tomorrow, but I need help.
Post album covers that are really awesome but look nothing like what the album actually sounds like. I am going to make the title tracks of those records.
-
Got home a couple of minutes ago, so my album starts now (even though I should sleep and write a paper)

Cheerfully withdrawn.
My record should be ready next weekend.
-
My apologies for jumping at you, Alex. This is half of a good effort! I can tell! It's better than what I expect my final product to be.
-
the last 7 minutes are silence!
They weren't supposed to be, but by the time I came to the mastering stage, I thought my arms were five metres long and my computer was screaming at me.

I got three songs in before I was reminded that my grandfather comes out of the hospital today, so my time was interrupted. Expect a retry next week. I'll post the three songs soon though
-
I'm buying a digital 8-track recorder and a cheap but well reviewed condenser mic and giving this a try. I've done FAWM twice and 50 songs/ 90 days once, so this is right up my alley.
-
I took Monday off and had a go at this... it didn't go well. I made a start on one song, but CuBase kept crashing. Also the way I was trying to do it was RETARDED... and my housemate just got GTA4.
I'll give it a proper go next Monday or Tuesday.
-
How 'bout sampling GTA4 and mixing it up with some wicked banjo. Kill two birds with one stone!
-
Heavily accented spoken word with sporadic banjo attacks? Perfect!
In fact, I could probably use the audio from some of the scripted sequences, and replace the gunfire with banjo!
Nico: "You are going to pay for what you have done to my cousin!"
*twang-a-lang-bling-blunk*
Henchman: "AUGH, you BASTARD!"
-
That could be all kinds of hilarious.
-
Hey piratearrrgggggggg,
are you still doing yours?
-
That depends, are you and Gabe still helping me?
(If you guys can't, that's fine. I'll borrow one of my friend's keyboards and do some arrangements by myself.)
-
I am doing this. Will upload later this calender day.
-
I think I will get a chance to do this next week. Whether I post something depends on whether I can piece together anything coherent. I will try though.
-
I am putting mine in the right order at the moment and I'm going to upload it later tonight, with any luck.
-
Right. So, I only just started posting, saw this thread today, and will have only my time tonight to try this. I will also be trying to clean the house as a surprise for my woman.
This. Will. Be. Awesome.
I get home at 7pm, have to mow the lawn, finish the laundry, vacuum, do the dishes, and record 30 minutes of original music with my Rock Band mic and acoustic guitar. I am really looking forward to seeing if I can pull this off. If I do, I'll feel completely pimp:
-
you could always record audio of yourself doing those chores and just put it over some trip-hop beats.
i'd probably listen to that. and you'd be killing two birds with one stone.
-
That would be so righteous.
-
Well, I started at roughly 10:30pm, and finished uploading the album at 3:25am.
The linkage is here:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?4mdfnlsxljd
Every song was written and recorded in the time that was used tonight. No previously-written stuff was used. The awesome sound guitar work is my cousin. The guitar work full of fail is me. That's also me doing the singing. Sorry about that.
Edit: Added the album art since I finally figured out how to put images in posts... NURRR...
-
I haven't listened to it all but thats not bad at all, plus i love your avatar.
I think i finally decided Im gonna do 30 straight minutes of multilayered amateur beat boxing. My lips will be tired
-
That's a REALLY strong effort. Easily the best so far, and technically the first complete album with actual songs. It's pretty depressing that all the other efforts are better than my eventual effort is sure to turn out to be.
-
Dr. Rocktopus kicked my ass
-
I failed... this time.
I'm sad I can't use the few minutes of material I did create, but I will try again, starting this evening and ending tomorrow before then, most likely.
I've downloaded some of your guys' albums, but haven't listened yet. I'm going to assume that so far they're all great, soooo... GOOD JOB!
-
Thanks, all. It was a fucking epic night, fueled by beer and hair dye. The only thing I wasn't really happy with was the last track. I needed sleep, so I just jammed out on the guitar and then tossed a few effects on top of it. Meh. If I had more time, there would have been two or so real songs in place of that one.
Still and all, it was a great time. Sox, thanks for putting this up. Once I do some polishing, I actually might have gotten a few real, usable songs out of this. Much obliged.
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/DynamiteKid156/Sigs/Unicycle01.jpg) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E3G5DU2B)
The Essential INABIAL, otherwise known as Riding On A Unicycle (With No Wheels And No Seat).
The MP3s still say 'Essential INABIAL' but honestly, we were running out of time and I couldn't be arsed to re-tag the MP3s.
Production wise, we are talking basic as a FUCK. Mixing? Nah, we just were careful where we placed the amps. Polishing? Most of these were one-take wonders. Someone had an idea, we said 'let's do that,' jammed a little bit, and then switched on the tape and jammed some more. Overdubbing we did on.... *counts* three songs. Most of this was jamming, and there are some major mixing errors (be very careful towards the end of 'No Blues Blues' as things get very loud very quickly, and the asme at one point during 'My Fingers Hurt'). For anyone wondering, on 'Yo' Mama,' we didn't use a sample. Mark just sat there and said the sample as we played the song. For four minutes. Watch out 'Dr. McNinja' fans for the theme song we wrote. For the webcomic.
It's an eclectic mix that takes in experimental rock, industrial, noise rock, surf guitar, blues, acoustic balladry, ambient,
Tracklisting is:
1. Skegness (I Pity The Fool) - 1:53
2. That's Enough Percussion - 2:19
3. Unicycle, Part One (No Wheels) - 3:48
4. Dr. McNinja - 3:55
5. No Blues Blues - 1:56
6. If You Talk To Me Like That Again (I'll Smash your Face) - 1:38
7. Nursery Rhyme Wonderland (Part 7.5) - 1:24
8. Train In Snow - 3:00
9. Yo' Mama - 4:11
10. Pigeons In Space - 1:16
11. I Love You - 1:17
12. Interplay - 2:41
13. Dead Skin - 3:07
14. Pretentious, Moi? - 3:13
15. Bullfrog - 2:12
16. My Fingers Hurt (Sophie, I Just Don't Give A Funk) - 12:31 (ya, rly)
17. Unicycle, Part Two (No Seat)/hidden track, called 'Nurse' - 3:07
I should point out at this point that we are a band who make deliberately bad music and in my experience, you either find it funny, or you don't. There's not really a middle ground.
Those of you wanting music that's borderline competent, look to 'Train In Snow,' 'Pretentious Moi' and 'Pigeons In Space.'
Those of you wanting music that's borderline competent, yet deliberately ridiculous, look to 'Skegness,' 'Dr. McNinja,' 'Dead Skin' and 'Interplay.'
Those of you who think this sounds like an awful idea, please just listen to 'Bullfrog,' because it's our finest work and the one that was overdubbed most.
I'd also like to point out at this point that Mark Holmes' potentially libelluous comments about Fred Durst on one song in no way represent the thoughts and feelings of the group.
P.S. edit I believe we are still over 30 minutes even without track 16.
-
I like it! "Interplay" was pretty fantastic, and "Bullfrog" was great.
I plan on doing this on Sunday on to Monday. My Repertoire will be two guitars, a bass, and probably a keyboard (which has a drum kit sample). Also drumsticks and a harmonica (which I can't play very well at all). I think I am going to do an album based loosely on Tom Robbins' Still Life With Woodpecker. But I may not.
-
So I was going to try starting this today (having freshly come home from a week of vacation), but I discovered that the only male-to-male stereo cable I have has a short in the wire and therefore carries only a mono signal, which just annoys me to death when I try to plug my keyboard into my computer's line-in jack and listen to it play back as I record. Once I get that fixed I'm good to go, although I'm still going to need to overcome my inability to write the sweet beetz in my head for full drum kits rather than "doom chsh, doom-chsh-chsh." Either that or drop the attempt to be a multi-instrumental songwriter.
-
The News at Six Foot One is somehow really good. I'm not usually one to just listen to this type of music, but something keeps me into it. The voiceovers are only a part of it.
Good job.
-
Rolling20s did a really good job with his album as well. I enjoyed it very much. It reminded me of this band from my state called The Year's Best.
EDIT - Oh man, you guys. I remembered my dad had this old mic in his workshop downstairs, so I got it and found it had a 1/4 plug. I need a 1/8 plug. So I went to Radioshack and picked up an adapter and now I am running it straight into my computer. I made a test song with it and I am all ready for tomorrow. If I finish, I will upload it either late Monday night or Tuesday morning.
-
Ok, so Tuesday is the day for me. Added to the instrumental lineup are:
1x piano accordian (with 120 freakin' bass buttons)
1x mandolin
Disclaimer: The use of awesome instruments in no way garuntees an awesome recording. The 'artist' takes no responsibility for any audio-enduced nausea.
-
Alrighty, guys, here's the deal. I have finished this thing. I think I am somewhere around thirty minutes. I did the first half of the album at my house and finished the second half at my friend Ryan's house. The recording quality is pretty shitty, so my vocals get lost in the mix, which may or may not be a good thing. I'm going to send the completed files back to myself and then I'll upload them when I get home tomorrow.
I started on Sunday at roughly 11:00 A.M. and finished at about 2:00 A.M. on Monday morning. Woo! Nine hours left to spare!
-
Okay, I don't think I'll be able to do this before the end of May. I've discovered that, even after having the right equipment strictly for recording, it is very difficult to play my keyboard sitting in my armchair with it resting on my lap. I've purchased a portable stand and a bench (been meaning to do so for quite some time now) but I expect that by the time they arrive I will already be drugged up after having my wisdom teeth extracted Thursday. However, I really want to do this, so May or not, I will face this challenge!
-
Apparently, I can't do math, so my thing is about twenty-six minutes long. Ugh. I could have sworn I did six songs, but I guess I only did five.
Anywho, without further adieu, here it is:

I guess I'll try again next time.
-
It's 9:06am (Tuesday) local time over here, and I'm about to get started (as soon as I finish my coffee).
I'll have to do the first few hours outside It's raining outside and my housemate is still in bed so it looks like I'm starting with fruity-loops!
-
i'm with baited breathe, big D-Dog. good luck with the fruity loops, i cant grasp that stuff man, ive been trying to get to grips with Ableton today, and it's not happening, like it didnt happen with Fruity Loops. but have fun, i shall back in 24 to collect the outcome. x
-
Damn it, now I'm nervous...
so, 6 hours in I have about 4.5 minutes done.....
-
here's mine.
napcore presents...
nappery!
did some live tracking/improv with some friends tonight... we're all in different bands but we have this side project, napcore.
we make sigur ros type music, hence the "nap" part of the name.
this time we made something less sigur ros-y and more... something else.
after they left I noticed we were 2 mins short so I made a bonus track.
everything was completely improvised except the last one which was pieced together from samples and found sounds like the ceiling fan in my kitchen.
sorry if you find the mixing to be off or the quality sub-par, we just had everything plugged into a big ol mixing board shooting out one track into ProTools.
I know the kick drum's a bit boomy.
in the zip file there's a text file with liner notes/ track list, as well as an album cover.
Here's the track list anyways:
1. droplets
2. isle of the meerkats
3. parakeet storm
4. submarines
5. two, then one
6. bonus track: æthera
here's the linkage:

Hope you all like it!
-
well i think i jumped on this post too late :-(
ill try to get it within the next couple o days - but i might be betta off waiting for the june thread.
we'll see :-) great job guys!
-
Friday is the day for me. Or maybe Saturday. Close to the line.
-
i am so in. will be recording and mastering tomorrow. may be under 30 minutes by a smidge,
edit because i answered my own question.
BE EXCITED!
-
Just spent two hours recording just under 27 minutes of music. Sadly it's not completely original, but we were pretty proud of it. We'd have managed the half hour of original music but there were time constraints (basically only two hours in total available in the next 24). Ah well.
http://www.med!afire.com/?dn53jrb33g5
The last track, Who Knows Where The Time Goes, is a cover of Sandy Denny's song and therefore not even pretending to be original. September's lyrics were written months ago but the chords are new and it's never been recorded before.
-
DMart - the Scherzo
(http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/1214/thescherzocm5.jpg)
Under-time and two days after it's completion, DMart's Scherzo arrived at mediaf!re for the general public to gaze and frown upon. Upon first listen, the listener will quickly realise there will not be another. Be it the poorly-synched samples mixed in with mechanical beats or the hockney and treble-heavy banjo recordings, there is something here for everyone (to cringe at). DMart can't seem to decide whether he is suffering from lazyness or ADD - tracks are either too simplistic or can't hold a steady pattern for more than a bar.
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?guytlhmjcmg
This was great fun.
-
Is it ok to sign up for this now?
-
Yes! There are still a couple of days left in May!
I am recording my album tonight, me thinks.
-
I signed up just to do this ¬_¬
May I present to you: BlahBlah's opus, the magnificent album of blah!
Recorded over a 24 hour period, with absolutely no continuity or links, and wild differences in audio quality and mixing. A unique mixture of shoegazing, techno, alt-pop, prog-rock and fucked-up shit. It's not all original, but there is 30 minutes worth of my own "compositions". One track I thought was original until I played it back and realised it was wild thing.
Pitchfork gave it 10/10. It must be good!
There are a few covers, mostly of ween songs.
Link in a second, when it finishes uploading.
-
Is music made out of samples ok?
And does it have to be continuous 24 hours?
-
Every question that you could possibly think to ask has been answered already on the first page. At the end of the month, all the entries will be posted on a blog for the event. If you don't want your 'album' posted, then you'll have to PM me. If you have any additional information you want to be posted with it, such as cover art, production notes, blurbs etc, you'll have to PM me those too.
I'm aware of maybe a dozen people who've told me "My exams don't finish until June" so the contest is going to remain open for those people. After I'm sure all the entries have had fair time to be posted here, I'll introduce some polls for people to vote on their favourites and say a few things.
I'll have between £40-£50 for an appropriate 'prize' for the strongest entry around the end of June. Entries that fall short of the 30 minute mark by more than 2.5 minutes might not be eligible, I haven't decided.
-
Awm...
Since I had nine spare hours the weekend I recorded, would you mind if I used up that last bit of time to write a sixth song to fill up the four minutes I initially thought I had filled?
-
You were perfectly aware of the time requirement! You could always write another album from scratch, there's no limit to how many albums you're allowed to record.
-
I suppose I could, but it would be hard for me to top the work I did on this one. Herumph. I'll think about it.
-
http://www.mediafire.com/?myyaydmzdb3 (http://www.mediafire.com/?myyaydmzdb3)
Here is part of one of the songs I am making. Just thought I would show you what (some parts of, at least) the album is going to sound like.
-
Crap, the upload crapped out while I was away. I'll get it up as soon as I can, probably tomorrow.
http://www.mediafire.com/?mzm1qvzfewx
-
So, I started two hours ago. Not much done yet, but fun times are being had. (I have beer and pringles).
-
Scratch that. Due to technical difficulties I will be starting again tomorrow.
-
First day, Richard! You, me and Kai should all finish about the same time if the three of us start at the same time!
-
Aargh! I can't finish this without a fucking mic! And there isn't a fucking mic in the house! Aaaargh!
I've done about 16 and a half minutes.
-
I'm sure I already said this before, but try plugging various headphones into your line-in port. Our resident Josh tried this the other day and it worked great.
-
Last day, Richard! You, me and Kai should all finish about the same time if the three of us actually complete the challenge.
We're cutting it fine. What happens if I'm only 12 hours into my recording when June begins? Do I have to stop, or does it count because I started the 24 hours in May? Confusion.
-
What are you talking about? Why would you start that early? There's a whole month left, loads of time!
-
I'll have between £40-£50 for an appropriate 'prize' for the strongest entry around the end of June. Entries that fall short of the 30 minute mark by more than 2.5 minutes might not be eligible, I haven't decided.
Daz, you can just buy me a new Man United away kit.
-
Holy crap, you can record with ipod headphones. Thanks!
-
Tomorrow I am uploading my first album, starting (and hopefully finishing) the blog and if there is enough time, I'll record my 'Prince of Pots' idea. It's been a long day. Night folks.
-
so I've been working for about 3 hours, and I have about 10 minutes of material. I'm hoping to finish sometime early this morning. Definitely going to do this another time as well, since we extended it to June.
-
(Writing this, hoping not to sound obtuse).
So, with the name change from May to June, are we looking at a separate competition for June, or is this just a deadline extension for those that weren't able to wrap up by midnight tonight?
I ask, mainly, because I'm looking for another excuse to do this again. The May album thing was a blast. Also, I want to thank Sox for putting all the work into the blog, etc.
-
It's a month long extension because people hate deadlines. If you want to do another though, feel free. There's no limit to how many times you can do this thing.
As for the blog, I'll probably use blogger. I've found you can make really nice designs with blogger, but if they're image intensive, things tend to load slowly. I plan to use mediafire to re-host the albums. I would have liked to use box.net to allow streaming, but there's a 10mb filesize limit and I don't want to break Khar's album into sections just to host it somewhere convenient. I'm attaching album art to all the mp3s, as well as tagging them all correctly. Some of you might get PM's from me asking for missing information like track numbers.
The albums won't be posted in any particular order, but the ones that are conveniently already properly tagged and include artwork are likely to go up first. Once the 'contest' is over, I'll probably make an 'index' type post.
After that we can all forget about it until I bump it next year.
-
Umm... I was too busy to do this in May, but the June extension changes everything. I played some guitar on Rolling20s songs (I'm the aforementioned cousin). I'm going to record an album of improvised guitar and saxophone duets tomorrow (a plan that was set in motion before even hearing about this thread). I have a home studio, so the quality should be pretty good. I'll also probably do a solo CD before the month is up. More soon,
-Eric
-
Yay, thanks for the extension Darry! This means I'll probably be able to do it again. I probably won't record with friends like I stated earlier, but at least I can put something out.
-
The extension means I can do this the week before Tronnocon. Great news.
-
I will definitely try to do this again with coffee next time. The main problem is keeping my people up at night with my guitars and shit. I really hope my family goes out of town some time in June so I can do this thing with coffee.
-
There is an extension. Wonderful! I can now make something that is not suck. Or that is less suck.
-
If I can find another day, I too will try this again.
-
This extension makes me happy because I started yesterday and my deadline was about two hours ago but I ended up getting stuck on this one song I really liked and just working on that, and also playing the Godfather. So, I was still productive! Woo hoo!
-
I tried this three times, failed twice, completed it once but it was just recording me and my sister talking for 20 minutes of that "completed" attempt, and I feel that is a bit of a cop-out.
The extension changes EVERYTHING though! I will complete an album. I doubt it'll sound good, but it'll be thirty minutes.
Oh, and Napcore - Nappery is really quite good.
-
Holy crap, you can record with ipod headphones. Thanks!
What's the quality like?
-
So I finished mine, in a manner of speaking. I ran out of time, so I pieced together whatever I could for each song, and then channelled my sleep-deprived delirium into improvising an odd noise track that I suspect is entirely unlistenable. Once I've had some sleep, I'll upload it.
-
October1983- You too? :-P
The ipod-headphone-improved-mic worked, but the quality was ultra-bad. I was also using freeware software, so that might have had some to do with it.
Anyways...Is it Ok if the album is one big long 31 song, and is 72.2mb? I didn't intend to make it into one long song, but it was too ADD to split up...Sorry..It's basically lots of little noise sections, and wannabe-breakcore sections, and poorly-recording (but hopefully hilarious) kvlt nd tr00 black metal sections..Hopefully it will be fun to listen to, but not for the weak-willed/easily annoyed/sane. Oh, and parts may be a bit...X-rated, *ahem*. Let's just say I DLed 'nymphomatriarch' and was dissapointed by how subtle the sexuality was.
Uploading it as I speak.
-
The extension means I can do this the week before Tronnocon. Great news.
Guys, we should do one AT tronnocon.
-
Anyways...Is it Ok if the album is one big long 31 song, and is 72.2mb?
I'll split it up before I re-host it for the blog.
-
I'm going to have another go at this soon. Expect Paintin' The Town Brown Poopship Destroyer/Hawkwind style noise.
-
Guys, we should do one AT tronnocon.
Hells yes. I can bring a recorder and a toy keyboard for fun sound effects. Maybe some other things if I can find interesting stuff.
-
I will do this probably second or third week of june, and it should be awesome awesome fun.
-
A tronnalbumwould be great!
I might bring a guitar and a trombone!
-
i just tried the recording through headphones thing, and it was pretty rubbish, it blew my mind, but it was pretty rubbish.
i'd like to have a go at this thing though at some point this month.

Lewisham presents...Tout Devient Possible
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q109/october1983/lewisham.jpg)
http://www.mediafire.com/?vc01gn4jygj
I completely ran out time towards the end, to the extent that none of the tracks are really finished and there's a fair amount of filler in there (you can probably ignore the first and fourth tracks - the latter was an idea that never got finished...and the majority of the last track is compete nonsense). But nonetheless it was fun, and gave me a chance to learn about some new equipment I bought recently. Good times!
-
My effort will be begun this Wednesday. I believe the ensemble will be called Lightning Strikes Mice and will consist of my flatmates and I. It will involve a ukelele, screaming, probably more than one bass guitar and a massive lack of expertise.
-
That's way more interesting than what you said you were doing before. I'm not uploading mine until I have a name for the project. If I can't think of anything better than "Tired Horses" by this time tomorrow, I'm uploading it as the first Tired Horses album.
-
i'd like to have a go at this thing though at some point this month.
Guys, keep an eye out for this one... he has talents.
-
That's way more interesting than what you said you were doing before. I'm not uploading mine until I have a name for the project. If I can't think of anything better than "Tired Horses" by this time tomorrow, I'm uploading it as the first Tired Horses album.
Yeah, my original idea would have been pretty interminable stretched over thirty minutes and I was having problems working out how to make a decent beat in garageband anyway. In my head it was going to sound like that Aiden John Moffat album but I am neither sordid nor skillful enough for that. We discovered in earlier experiments that my old Squire P-Bass played through my really crappy guitar amp makes a pretty great dirty sound and I've got a penny whistle I'd like to throw in there at some point, so this way ought to be a little more entertaining. Also, we had the idea of forming a band when we moved in here but it never materialised and I'm moving in with new at the end of the month, so it'll be nice that we actually do something before it's too late.
-
I have no high-tech recording equipment, nor any good sound editing software. But I do have a mic I use for gaming that picks me up decently well and my saxophone and a friend with a drum kit. I'll see if I can make something work.
-
Oh, and Napcore - Nappery is really quite good.
hey thanks, man!
(I was worried that no one listened to it)
Mind if I ask what your favourite track was?
-
My friend Matt and I recorded starting at noon yesterday (June 1). I'm working on mixing and artwork which I should have done by noon today. We recorded 8 tracks, which we wrote and improvised on the spot, with ambient guitar and saxophone. The recording quality is pretty stellar, considering we're in my living room, and we're making things up as we go. More soon...

Well, it's finished. Here's the cover:

...and the link to the mp3s
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?ygcitmt8evd
it actually ended up being over 44 minutes!
Some feedback would be great...

I'd tell you if my other computer's keyboard didn't just randomly stop working. Considering its a Mac and only uses USB keyboards, and all my other keyboards are old-school PS/2 style... I'll have to get back to you on that.
This also means I'll have to wait until we get a new one to record as well.
Edit: Just got back from the Apple Store. New Keyboard, new Mouse, new iLife!
About Nappery: I like all the songs pretty closely the same, but "Isle of the Meerkats" or "Two, Then One" would have to be my favorites.
And now, once iLife '08 installs I shall create some music!
-
Damn it, its times like this I wish I had a band at Uni. I get back home 27th, I see MBV 28th, I do this 29th. Sorted.
-
ok so i lagged in may but i ON IT now. will be doing this sometime mid june.. FRIGGIN SWEET!
-
DMart's is my favorite so far.
-
The extension might mean I get a second album in.
Can you say 'comedy rap'?
-
So my keyboard bench is here. Now I'm just waiting for the stand to arrive so I can begin.
-
holy cock, i didnt see Dmart had upped an effort till now!!
i'm just listening to it now... it's fricken awesome, i would actually listen to this in real life! this is even better than the fritz.
-
Keyboard stand is here. Unfortunately I'm not going to have time to do it today, and I think I'll be too wiped from work to do it Sunday, so my attempt will have to wait until I'm off again next Wednesday/Thursday.
-
That's right. Original compositions, written from scratch in one day. I've drawn the blog, but I'm having trouble with photoshop keygens due to my operating system. It won't be long now.
Before I upload my album, does anybody have any good names for a solo project I can use?
So far I have...
Tired Horses
Bistre
Ecru
Bisque

Banzai Chinese Bistro
Anyway, I was playing around with recording vocals through the mic on my headset (which actually works fairly well, for being nonprofessional equipment) and I just wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestion for reducing hiss/white noise. I'm limited to doing this in-house, next to my computer, so I've done everything I can in the environment (turn off the air conditioner, muffle the computer itself), but if anyone has any suggestions on the software side of things (a compression filter perhaps? I don't really know) I'd like to hear them.
-
You can isolate certain sounds and remove them using Audacity, but in my experience that isn't very effective and causes a lot of distortion. Given the equipment you're using, I'd suggest some clever mic placement. Try recording at different distances and seeing which produces the least hiss. Personally, I find it helps to turn up the mic sensitivity and play closely to the mic. The louder parts of the recording this way are the parts I actually want to hear, and they're loud enough that I can reduce the overall volume of the track until the hiss is barely audible without sacrificing too much of the sounds I've recorded. However, I've found that loud noises near a mic that is too sensitive results in a lot of distortion.
Keep moving things around until you find the right balance! It's much easier to sort this out while recording than it is afterwards.
-
So, basically, I bought a four track mixer, a unidirectional mic and some cords from Radioshack the other day, as well as got myself a copy of Ableton Live 7, and my recordings sound a fuckton better. Expect my next album to sound significantly better, but don't expect it to blow any minds. We'll see.
-
I swear to God, if any unwanted distractions come up tomorrow, I will rip someone's head off. I woke up meaning to start this today, and as the phone calls and text/instant messages started rolling in, it looked less and less likely until I became absolutely convinced it would not be possible.
-
You didn't do it because...
...you were busy responding to text messages and instant messages?
Is that like that time I called school and said I wouldn't be showing up because I was in the middle of a heated debate on the internet?
That blog is gonna be a long time coming, I had forgotten how much I hate playing with HTML. Khar says I should use a template, but I say "screw you man, I have standards".
-
No no no, the calls and the text messages brought news of other events that required my time. Basically, all my friends want to hang out on my day off because they haven't seen me since I got buried underneath the monolith of the full-time job.
In retrospect, I should have brought them all over to help me make music... but then again none of them are musically inclined in any ways that I respect, so it probably would have turned out terrible.
-
If they can keep time and clap and/or know how to bang on things with their hands or with sticks, they don't really need to be musically inclined.
-
It's not that they're not musically inclined, it's that they are musically inclined in all the directions I absolutely cannot stand.
Anyway, I have been playing with my recording setup (not actually writing per se) and should be good to go tomorrow. And through till about 3:00 Friday if need be.
-
I've barely slept in three days. I think I'm going to go for this once again (I finished the one on the last day of may but it was all so universally terrible that I was honestly embarrassed for myself). Go team!
-
My plans for this got scuppered by the lovely weather and preferring walking about and hanging out in the park to sitting indoors making an album. It's been cooling off lately though and I still plan to get this done before the month is out.
-
My laptop is shipping up here from where it has been fixed by my friend in California. I will need to order a newer, not-shitty interface (the iMic that I have is complete trash when I direct-line it from my SG, the pickups are way too hot) for GarageBand but it'll happen sometime within the next two weeks.
Anybody think I should just get a Fostex MR-8 with a hard drive and CD burner and a Shure SM-58?
-
Like some others before me I, too, signed up just to do this.
I recorded the first one two weeks ago and because I was not entirely happy with the results
(some tracks are very experimental to say the least...) I decided to make a second one
which turned out to be a (in my opinion) much better album. Or let's say: better than I expected.
So now I have the pleasure to share two albums of mine at once! Think about it...that's just...incontheevable !!!

Out of the the albums posted here so far, I think Emanations From Ry'Leh by Halo of Flies aka
KharBevNor and The Scherzo by DMart (even though it is only 15 minutes) are really good. "Emanations..."
inspired me to do "Terror from the Deep", by the way.

This thing took a break because I hate playing with HTML and because I'm focusing on gathering a portfolio for a college interview this week. It should be back on track afterwards, and Dan volunteered to put the blog together. I've no idea whether or not he'll finish it by Friday like I asked though.
-
I'll do it by Wednesday you punk-ass kid!
And then I'll record the fourteenth worst album you'll ever bloody hear!
-
Bad news: Instead of redoing it during my two days off of work last week, I hung out with some friends for the whole time.
I am going to attempt it again eventually.
-
I'll try to get this done within the next couple of weeks.
Oh wow, this is the last weekend I can do this. Damn. Darryl, are you going to continue this contest into July, or is this the last month you're going to let it go on?
-
DARRYL. POST YOUR DAMN MIX. NO MORE EXCUSES.
-
Guys Darryl's parents just called and said he was hit by a goddamn stampede of caribou. Where he managed to find caribou in Britain is beyond me, but tl;dr he's not gonna be able to do it for a while.
-
I'm posting from my hospital bed using a med students iPhone. It's pretty neat. There are caribou in Scotland, btw. Long story short, Patrick is more or less correct.
I need to come up with nearly £750 in college fees by August and will be retiring for a while.
The good news is that I got into college, the bad news is that I can't afford it and may have to take out a small lone. I'm gonna give my internet responsibilities to other folks so you won't even notice I am gone.
Dan is going to do the blog, Patrick is going to make up silly excuses for me, Shane is going to complain about inane things, everybody is gonna consult Pete for advice on what to do when they stub their toe and Linds is gonna decide what happens to this contest.
I haven't told any of them this, but I'm sure they'll rejoice at the opportunity to cover my slack.
Gmail if I've missed anything.
-
This was a contest?
Uhm.
-
Good luck Darryl (I guess I'll gmail you that). Haven't yet got the blog done yet as I've been jobhunting, but I guess since you need £750 for college you don't need to show it to anyone to impress them.
-
Darryl I will make TWO entries just because we need something to fill the void left by your absence. I'll make it a really shitty album on purpose so that it's a more realistic replacement.
(I keed, I keed, but I will probably have to do two albums because I have failed everybody for two months straight)
-
This was a contest?
Uhm.
I guess that's up to you.
Haven't yet got the blog done yet as I've been jobhunting
Last time I ask you for a favour, jerk.
Darryl I will make TWO entries just because we need something to fill the void left by your absence.
No need. I'll up it.
I'll make it a really shitty album on purpose so that it's a more realistic replacement.
fuck you!
-
I will do my best to pick a winner then.
Good luck with college and everything. It's fun. :)
-
Shane is going to complain about inane things
NOT ENOUGH LIME IN THIS LEMON-LIME SODA.
-
I will do my best to pick a winner then.
Hint: Poll.
Good luck with college and everything. It's fun. :)
Thankyou.
SOMETHING LIKE I WOULD SAY
Just when Linds has me thinking I've left everything in the hands of incompetents, Shane pulls through and knocks one right out of the park.
-
Just when Linds has me thinking I've left everything in the hands of incompetents,

-
]/crybaby
Chin-up. I picked you over everybody else, remember? Just, polling seemed pretty obvious to me. I can't believe that one didn't occur you to sooner.
-
Because I'm having one of those days. I forgot today was Saturday for a large part of the day.
I will make a poll thread soon. (Placeholder.)
-
Last time I ask you for a favour, jerk.
I am sacking up!
Khar's album clearly wins, even though I haven't heard it yet (problem with the original download).
the last 7 minutes are silence!
They weren't supposed to be, but by the time I came to the mastering stage, I thought my arms were five metres long and my computer was screaming at me. I would have put something in, but that would have meant breaking the 24hr rule.
Consider it a jazz improvisation on 4' 33".
-
To be honest, Khar's and Shane's were the only albums I listened to. So there will be a poll.
I am too lazy to make a separate thread! Vote in a post of who's album you like best! Consider it as an entire album, not just a collection of songs. Is it a full 30 min? Does the theme work? Is it just plain awesome? Vooooote.
-
Just when Linds has me thinking I've left everything in the hands of incompetents, Shane pulls through and knocks one right out of the park.
Love you too, Dazza.
-
I'll make it a really shitty album on purpose so that it's a more realistic replacement.
fuck you!
I got dibs on pitcher.
Also, god damn it, laptop STILL isn't here and it's already fuckin' July in 2 days. Stupid useless mail, it takes 3 fucking weeks to get from California to Alaska, but it's like a week from Amazon.com to Virginia to Albania.
-
It seems I have procrastinated asll my time away. If I submit something in the first few days of July, will it be all right?
-
Go for it.
And since no one voted, Khar wins, and everyone (even those who have not played yet) tie for second.
-
Fuck you Linds, Khar does not win yet. I will  :evil:destroy him   when my laptop gets here.
Speaking of which, my friend hasn't even shipped it yet. Fuck only knows when it's gonna get here.
-
You didn't do it in May OR June, Patrick. There are rules now.
-
If I can't enter the marathon 'cause all my shoes are over 1,000 miles away, why stay on the track when my shit eventually arrives?
-
Wait, I won?
Where's my cake!?
