I'm not a big fan of rap, but I love those albums. Those are good places to start.

Oh, Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Enter the Wu-Tang Clan

Yeah, I'd just like to add - BRING THE MUTHAFUCKIN RUCKUS.

It's just occurred to me that he's said essential rap, not essential rap albums.

ODB - Got Your Money
Eminem - Sing For The Moment
Lupe Fiasco - Superstar
Kanye West - Diamonds From Sierra Leone
Tupac feat. Dr. Dre - California Love - If you only get ONE rap song, make it this one.
Snoop Dogg - Who Am I?
The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff - Summertime

STONES THROW RECORDS!

Anything off this brilliant label (basically), started by my man Peanut Butter Wolf years ago, its my go to label for modern hip hop that brings back the old-school sound. These records in particular:

Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf - Big Shots (get this now)
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Percee P - Perseverance
JayLib - Champion Sound (collab. between Jay Dee and Madlib)
Jay Dee - Donuts

And they just signed this new guy James Pants, check out his single:

Seriously?  This shit is fucking amazing.  Kool Keith is pretty much the shit, both Dr. Octagonocolygist and Black Elvis/Lost in Space are fan-fucking-tastic.  His style is way more interesting than someone like Doom.

I wouldn't say he's more interesting than Doom, they're pretty different in any case. But yeah, Dr Octagon is pretty great.

Also, what the fuck is this not doing in this thread already:

What's up with the lack of Nas love? Illmatic is a definitive album of the whole 90's rap scene.
