Title: The closest you've gotten to / are with artists
Post by: Divide by Zero on 16 May 2008, 12:05
I was thinking about this because I'll be going to The Totally Normal Event in June, and Freezepop is performing there. From what the organizer told me, they'll be mingling with the event-goers quite a bit. So I have another little notch in my Indie belt coming up.

Let's see... I've been at Barry Carl's house because I used to be friends with his daughter. He was the original bass in Rockapella, who did the Carmen Sandiego theme song. Also, I've spoken on the phone with Voltaire about ex-girlfriends. My mom was at Book Expo promoting her book, and she called me to tell me he was there, whereupon he snatched the phone out of her hand to talk to me himself. It was cool.

My favorite band is Raquy and the Cavemen, and I gave a psychic reading to Liron Peled, who helped start the band with Raquy herself. He paid for it with two signed CDs. And I got to touch Raquy's drum. I couldn't bring myself to play it, though.

What about all of you?

I played a game of pool with Chris McCaughan?

(though the cooler moment of that night was getting whacked in the head by Brendan Kelly's bass, and then having him kick a glass of whiskey on me)

(PUUUUNX)

Other fun ones:

-Lent a Sharpie to Kylewilliam from Imadethismistake, then sang a Lawrence Arms song with him
-Helped Megafaun take down the PA after a show
-Talked to John Vanderslice once. Just the normal "Hey, great show!" kinda thing.

- Smoked a joint with J. Spaceman in Toronto in 1997.

- Dated a girl who had been taken to dinner by Trent Reznor.

- Am pretty close email-wise with Matt Elliott.

- At a Cat Power show in '98, due to van troubles, the opening band (Smoke, RIP) ended up playing after her, and after we talked a while and she bummed a cigarette off me she grabbed my arm and sat me down next to her to watch them, and held onto me the whole time.  If I hadn't had a girlfriend, I would have made a pass at her.  In fact, I should have anyway because said girlfriend would have probably totally understood.

- Used to see the original bass player for Elf Power every now and then.

- Have hung out with Will Cullen Hart (Olivia Tremor Control) because one of my ex's babysits his kids.

- Went to highschool with Cut Rate Box.

- Know a guy who is very close with Jamie Stewart, and used to be in a band with him.

- Have known Jenny Owen Youngs since she was 15.  Romantically involved with her when she was 15/16.  First song on her first self-released album is named after and about me.

- Evan Dando bummed a cigarette off me in 1994 at a gay club in Orlando.  No, I am not making that up.

- Met and talked to Edward Ka-Spel before a Legendary Pink Dots show.

- Met and talked to Wayne Coyne before a Flaming Lips show.

- Met and talked to dude from Polyphonic Spree while on mushrooms before their show.

- Hung out, ate, drank and occasionally translated with Acid Mothers Temple before they played.  Those guys and girl really love hot sauce.

- Kissed Carla Bozulich.

I honestly didn't think I would have that many to list.

After sound check, a Shearwater fella offered Liz and myself sauerkraut pizza. I accepted and we chatted about Calvin Johnson's near death experience and why no one ever tours Fargo in the winter (highly related events). Andy Kindler has my radio show time and name written down in his fancy notebook, I creeped out Eugene Mirman, Josiah Wolf from Why? and I had a singalong, and Dan from Wolf Parade gave me a shirt. We talked about Victoria, BC. Calvin Johnson creeped ME out (this is hard to do) but he stared at my boobs, which judging from his lyrics I shouldn't have been surprised about.

Fargo is small.

Oh, I just remembered I served some food to Sleater-Kinney a few years ago because I worked in the trendy vegetarian restaurant downtown right next to where they were about to play a free outdoor concert.

I didn't talk to them or anything though.

you guys are all much cooler than me (no sarcasm, i swear).

but let's see what we got here....i once got blacked-out drunk with Sam and Vadim from Dragonforce. can't say i really like their music all that much (anymore...heh) but those are two seriously cool dudes (unlike the rest of their band, who are cunts). after we were sufficiently drunk, they asked us to teach them some american slang and we had a good laugh when they went on stage later and Sam steals the mic away and yells "SHIT THE BED. FUCKIN' GNARLY" at the entire audience. 98% of the crowd just stood silently like "whaaat?" while me and my small group of very drunk friends laughed our asses off and made fools of ourselves.

that's probably my only worthwhile story...i don't get out much these days.

They were so nice! I saw them live without Sigur Ros at a cafe/recording studio in Philly. They played stuff from their EP and their (then) upcoming album. I talked to them for a while after the show. They were incredibly friendly and had seriously cute accents. I have a copy of their first EP signed by all of them. It's among my prized possessions.

I was given a flower by Cat Power, which made the friend I was with all envious and sulky for the rest of the night.

I met Will Sheff in a drunken stupor and shook his hand for like 3 minutes. I think he thought I was a bit weird.

Oh noes...I'm really drunk and now my dickish name-dropping has been given a chance to escape...but here it comes anyway. I will preface this by saying that living in Brighton, and working in clubs/promoting etc tends to lead to meeting/becoming acquainted with bands et al, but the rest I put down to stalking.

- Ted from Cursive slept on my floor after being harassed by my alcoholic housemate.
- Kevin Rowland asked me to sing backing vocals when he was singing acapella in a club
- Stuart Murdoch from Belle & Sebastian mocked me for having lots of Bright Eyes albums. I cut his DJ set short in response. He is a dick. And was playing a terrible set.
- Conor Oberst kissed my hand. He was wasted.
- Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs took a photo of my skirt - this was on the same night - I later got mistaken for a hooker. This was kind of embarassing and slightly scary, but when it happened I was too full of fangirly joy to take it all that seriously...
- Peaches 'interviewed' me with a camera in hand at 4am after one of her gigs as she took a shine to my gaffer-tape dress
- I periodically name-drop The Pipettes, but one of them is my mates. Same goes for This City and Restless List.

There are more, but I shall avoid the tales of members of 3rd rate indie bands I've thrown up on in an attempt to preserve some minute shred of dignity and to keep the distinction between fangirly scenester type and slightly inappropriate groupie type in place.

After sound check, a Shearwater fella offered Liz and myself sauerkraut pizza. I accepted and we chatted about Calvin Johnson's near death experience and why no one ever tours Fargo in the winter (highly related events).

Fargo is small.

It was fun! He was a pretty cool guy and gave me a set list after they had finished. And I had a good chat with Kim, also of Shearwater, at that show. She was a total sweetheart.

At the Ted Leo show I had a good chat with him while they were setting up. I helped him out with some cords and equipment and we exchanged the usual conversation starters. Which seems pretty pathetic but it was TED LEO.

I sat on a couch with Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie) and chatted for a whole show without knowing who he was until he got up and said "Sorry to leave you, but I have to go play some music now." He was the most soft-spoken, chill person I have ever met but he was also quite funny. That was a good show.

Also Fargo is small. Sad.

Fuck you for knowing Jefre Cantu-Ledesma! The man's a genius and Tarentel is one of my all time favorite bands.

I've also met Phil Elverum and he's an incredibly nice, humble, friendly guy. We talked about photography and such. This was after he played in a tiny room at my school for over an hour and a half, doing all requests from the audience because, as he was coming to the show, his car broke down, forcing him to sell it, rent a new on, and finally get the the show a couple hours late. As a result I think he lost any semblance of a playlist he might have had. The show was brilliant since he played all the best stuff by The Microphones and Mount Eerie and hung around afterwards talking to people. It was awesome.

Bry Webb from the Constantines is a really great dude. Every time I have seen them (which is a bunch o' times) he stands in the crowd to watch the other bands and talks to people. He patted me on the shoulder. Also, like 6 years ago my friend was working the doors for a show of theirs in Hamilton, and Bry bought him some lasagne.

I hung out with You Say Party! We Say Die! before a show in Guelph a couple years ago at some dude's house. I am pretty shy so I didn't really say much, though. Becky Ninkovic (the singer) is the tiniest, most adorable person ever. She gives good high fives.

A couple of years ago, The Gourds (my favorite band) came to the small, southern college town where I live. They don't have much of a  following here and only a few people showed up to see them. The bar where they played is set up to where there is a large space in the back for the main band playing that night, and a smaller space up front where some guy sets up with an acoustic and plays John Mayer covers. There ended up being around 20 people there to see The Gourds, but the other part of the bar was packed with people listening to the John Mayer cover guy.

Anyway, I showed up at the bar a few hours before they played to see if I could meet them. I ended up getting to hang out and have a couple of beers with Jimmy Smith, the bass player and one of the two main vocalist/songwriters. I don't know if anyone here has even heard of them, but they're my favorite  band and I have all eight of their albums, so it was a pretty great experience for me. I saw them a few more times in Atlanta where the place was packed out with fans and there wasn't nearly the same opportunity to meet the band.

Also: Hey everyone, I'm new. I decided I've finally lurked enough to make a post.

I've stood round and chatted for a bit with Cass McCombs about cool and unusual guitars.  He really liked the idea of a Chapman stick but had never actually touched one.  Once talked to the guys from Head of Femur, and got some food with 'em.  Nick Westra, their bassist, started eating my fries.
Moment of glory: once did a jumping stomach-bump with Dan Deacon.

Got to meet Nightwish after their show at the White Rabbit in San Antonio last October.  Also got to meet and hang out with the guys of Into Eternity and Mike LePond of Symphony X.  There was a time when I was glad I met Herman Li and Vladim of DragonForce, but that dies every time I think about seeing them live again.  Though, according to Troy of IE, they've managed to tighten the show up a lot.

But yeah, just those three bands.  Not a lot of easily accessible artists come through central Texas.  Dream Theater played last August, but it requires an epic level feat and a virgin sacrifice to even hope to get those tickets to meet em.

op: everyone who sees freezepop play is embarrassed for them (this happened to me once)

The only reason I realized I could (theoretically) brag about this is that my friend who sits next to me in C++ is a HUGE fan of theirs, but don't ask me why. (She has really weird taste in music. She's also a huge Pat Benetar fan, and that's just pathetic. I hope she'll grow out of it.) How exactly are they embarrassed for them?

And I remember more bragging points I could get. My friend is the stage manager for The Tabernacle in NJ, which hosts a lot of 60's artists who are still playing. As such, he's gotten to hang and play with Hot Tuna, Levon Helm (The drummer for the band called The Band as in Bob Dylan and The Band), The Rascals, and most recently, Lucy Kaplanski. That was last night. The biggest name he's gotten is fucking Donovan. They flew him in from Scotland specially and he did a small tour in the NYC area. At Woodstock, the four artists they couldn't afford to get were The Beatles, The Stones, Donovan, and I believe The Who. I may have that last one wrong, though.

After a Freezepop concert (the Pittsburgh one actually), four friends and I got CDs and went to get them signed. While we were waiting in line, The Other Sean T. Drinkwater came around and struck up casual conversation, which lasted for 10-15 minutes. I wasn't really in on it, but I overheard most of it. Basically, it got into keytars and how they'd started with them for 2 years, drunk practicing, music videos, bloody keytars (http://a592.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/40/l_544b39fd277073ce67f75562e95258a7.jpg), etc.

Paul's is absolutely the peak of this thread but as for singing with Kevin Rowland you're smoking rock. Sure, it's probably not a common experience, but it's nowhere as interesting as being able to talk to Ian Mackaye.

I'm willing to bet talking to Ian Mackaye was the more interesting experience. I mean, it's Ian Mackaye. Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi... "You can't fuck with a motherfucker like that." But as an anecdote it's not as good. Getting asked to sing with Kevin Rowland is far more unusual and conjures up a much more fun scenario in my head, whereas an interview is a pretty normal thing.

Was it a nice ceremony? Did they say their own vows?

an interview is a pretty normal thing.

Yes, but I'll reiterate once more:

An interview with Ian Mackaye isn't.

No no no let's try this again

Ian Mackaye is more than a human being. I'd love to fellate him but I'm afraid I'd have the back of my head blown off by his ultra-righteous ejaculate.

Guys, I love all of Ian's work as much as the next person but come on, let's not be silly here.

I'm friends with a number of smaller / regional acts.  Madahoochi, Bockman, The Station, Tiffany Christopher to name a few.

I've met Steve Kimock, and one of the guitarists from Zappa Plays Zappa.  Both very briefly, and both via Madahoochi - Shawn Hartung was performing with The Everyone Orchestra at 10klf '05, and Kimock was playing with them that year as well, so her and Scott were talking to him when I walked over to ask them about something.  Then I met the one guitarist in ZPZ who played with Zappa, can't recall his name now, through a friend's brother who is a promoter for 10klf, while we were waiting on loading in Madahoochi's equipment.  My buddy recognized him and got to shake his hand, I just kinda stood there like a moron.

Then at dawn that next morning, I met some of the guys from a few bands when the promoter friend pulled up on our campsite with a golf cart full of musicians seeking out the last few campsites with anything going on :D

That'd be pretty awesome too, but I don't think anyone's brought that up in this thread as an event that happened to them?

But a forty-five minute interview with Ian Mackaye at his house, over tea. That's pretty fucking cool.

Apparently twenty years ago or so my dad used to frequent Yesterday and Today records on his lunch breaks. He would chat with Ian Mackaye, who worked there. Of course, drinking tea with him would be so much more kickass.

i met robin black, i doubt anybody outside canada remembers him, he's more or less gone out of music and into hairstyling. Also He's not an artist but I was in an elivator with former NYC mayor rudolf gulianni when he was in winnipeg for the fancy-assed snob party for jerks wine festival, I was working for one of the componies that sets up and takes down displays(at the end we got to steal so many unused bottles of fancy assed wine that were used for sampling and just left on the table for us to smuggle out in rolled up carpets throw out, but that's a different story). The guy just oozed asshole vibes and I didn't realize it was him until after. If I was awake enough to realize  I probably would have asked what the weight of thousands of dead homeless people that he let freeze to death felt like on his concience right in front of the unimpressed waitress he was hitting on. I really wish I had realized...

Greg Saunier from Deerhoof snuck me and my friend through the band door of a show once (we were under 18 and we'd already bought tickets).

Said friend has a much bigger indie-penis though. He played in Jens Lekman's band and has partied with Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird and Spoon (actually I think he said Spoon weren't in on the partying). He also plays on a few local artists' albums.

Guys, surreal experience today.  I played Sunflower by Low at my friend's sister's graduation party.  I played guitar and sang the lead part, my friend played bass and sang harmony, and a different friend played viola.  In the audience was Zak Sally, said friend's (and therefore friend's sister's) step-brother, and former bassist from Low, who helped write and record the goddamn song.  Afterward he came up and shook my hand and told me nice job.  Nice guy, weird experience though.

Mae came and played a show at my school. I hung out with them for about an hour in the afternoon before the show. Kinda surprised me that they're into Sigur Rós and Okkervil River, considering the music they make.

Hung out with a few members of The Decemberists a few times after shows.

Invited the members of Lovedrug for pie after a show. They declined, but did so by calling me. I thought it was kinda cool to have the lead singer's cell phone number.

Danced with the new female member of YACHT after she jumped into the crowd at a show.

Last, this one isn't mine, but a good friend helped Sufjan Stevens pack his van a few years ago. Can't remember why I didn't make it to that show...

I met Steve Harris and Nikko McBrain from Iron Maiden when I was about 15.   I shared a cigarette with Danny from the Wildhearts.   Played a show with Reelbigfish and drank their rider dry (they were pissed).   I played chess with Yoko Ono at her exhibition in Belfast.   I elbowed Billy Connoly in the ribs for standing too close to me in line at LAX.   I managed to get my shoe autographed by David Byrne.   But my most recent crowning achievement was while working crew at the Oddysey arena, and telling the Backstreet boys what a bunch of pathetic losers they are to their faces.   Oh yeah, Donny Osmond spat on me.

I played a show with Matt Talbot from Hum once.  It was with his other band, Centaur.  We helped him load his gear in; he was pretty nice but seemed incredibly shy.  He came up after the show to say he liked my band.

I also played on stage with Johnnie Johnson in St. Louis.  I was sitting in with a blues gee-tar slinger I know when he happened in and sat in with us.  I had no idea who he was until my friend told me afterwards.

Last year I played a show with some guys from the Steve Miller band.  It was a benefit for a charter school run by the bassplayer's wife.  He was a nice dude; he just walked up and said "Hi, I'm Steve McCarty. I'm the dude in the Steve Miller band.  I wrote 'Fly Like and Eagle.'  You write great transitions."  I think he was two sheets by that point.

I also got to play a show with Denali once.  Rumor had it that the singer from Portishead showed up to hear them, saw my band playing, and instantly left before they ever took the stage.  I didn't see her, but it was widely joked about among my friends.

That same band had the producer Tony Visconti come to one of our shows.  He did all the Bowie and T-Rex records, and a bunch of others.  He's the guy playing bass in "The Man Who Sold the World."  He asked for a demo, which we mailed.  We were promptly told that he didn't hear a single. Good times.

I've also met and talked with the drummers from System of  Down and Incubus, not that I'm into those bands anymore but it was cool at the time.  System of a Down had just put out their first record and nobody really noticed them off their bus so they were just walking around out front after a show.  My friend asked the drummer for his autograph; he was so excited to be on his first "big tour" that he ran back into his bus to get a fan autograph book that he had her sign.  They were super nice guys.

Sat next to TV on the Radio after they played the Virgin Fest last year, was too geeked out to say anything. Left embarrassed and ashamed.

Saw Ian MacKaye one night walking with Amy Farina in Adams Morgan in DC. Same thing happened as above.

Talked with Spoonboy before a Los Gatos Negros show at ABC No Rio, saw him repeatedly around DC when I lived there for the summer.

Have had very awkward, stilted conversations with Erin Tobey and Hannah Jones of Ghost Mice fame.

Put on a show for Alec K. Redfearn and had him stay at my house for a weekend. The crowning achievement of my life so far.

Went to school with the Genghis Tron and the dude who co-founded jizz-magnet label Lovepump United w/ Mookie.

I've had a bunch of other run-ins with musicians in restaurants. It's one of the most bizarre sensations going to get breakfast and seeing a musician you love chowing down on some huevos rancheros.

haha. this is funny. living here I've run into and had conversations with quite a few actors and musicians - I usually don't realize who they are though until later or if it comes up in conversation. I don't have a tv and and woefully ignorant of the people in bands I like (I generally don't give a crap who they are or what they look like as long as they make good music). I also have a pretty bad memory for names and faces. I think the last two were bumming a cigarette to the dude in gaslight anthem outside of a fake problems show and chatting for a while and one of the actors from firefly / serenity. Can't remember either of their names, but nice dudes.

*edit* oh and in the course of my job I meet a lot of directors, producers, blah blah. most of the time they just irritate me though  :-)

- Met, talked to, had things signed, and had pictures taken with Silversun Pickups at a meet-and-greet.  The lead guy, Brian, is the only person who has ever recognized my Secret Machines shirt.

- Met, talked to, had things signed by Jonny Lang and Reeve Carney.  Not indie, but they're still awesome.

- Have talked to Let's Go Sailing and Oh No! Oh My! on MySpace.  Shana Levy's favorite ice cream is rocky road.

I met Al Jardine from the Beach Boys the other day, shook his hand, and said "Al! I love you man!" I also high-fived the drummer from the band Al was playing with, David Logeman, who used to drum for Frank Zappa and Jan & Dean.

I was at a party a few months ago and I met the guy who wrote some song by Lifehouse. I can't remember which one because I don't really know anything about Lifehouse.

I went to see Peter Yarrow from Peter Paul and Mary perform at Barnes and Noble and I made sure to get there really early. He didn't really have any roadies so he and one other guy set up the mics and Peter walked around the room talking to everyone while he was setting up. Afterwards when he was signing stuff, I presented him with my copy of an original 60s-era PPM vinyl and he said to his daughter (keep in mind I'm only 20), "This is one of our original fans, he's been with us since the 60s, since he was just a little boychik."

During Yo La Tengo's acoustic tour, I was sitting pretty close to the stage and I shouted "You guys should play Pass the Hatchet all acoustic, 'cause it'll be funny," (Pass the Hatchet I Think I'm Goodkind being one of their hardest-rockin' songs). Ira angrily responded, "Funny? We don't do things to be funny!" and then they played the hardest, most electric version of Pass the Hatchet I'd ever seen.

A few years ago I saw Michale Graves (from the Misfits) and after the show I tried discussing politics with him, because during his performance he was talking about being a Republican and how he used to be in the military. I don't think he took me very seriously. After that, I got him to sign my wallet.

I don't know if anyone's heard of The Banner, but I know one of their guitar players.

My brother's friend's father dated Cyndi Lauper.

My friend's uncle wrote the Mission Impossible theme song.

- Tried on Shiny Toy Guns' pants. Two pairs. They were/are good friends of my roomie at the time and did laundry at our place a when in town (before they went all bigtime)

- Made out with lead singer of Crystal Castles during an afterparty they attended at our place. Health was staying with us that night as well, and the lead singer had his shoes stolen in the chaos.

- Kill Hannah came to a party we put on (lead singer ended up crashing there). Friend of mine talked to the lead singer for a half hour wearing nothing but tighty whiteys, strung out on pills.

- Had a long discussion with lead singer of Adult. about her dress post-show. Her mother hand sewed it. Also, she's adorable.

- Kiss Kiss broke up in our living room (upon doing research, it seems they're back together. dammit.)

- Hugged the lead singer of Xiu Xiu. And his cousin (the keyboardist) on stage post-show. Strangest concert I've ever attended. So so tense. Band was very approachable and I was very drunk.

- Got crazily drunk with Klaxons post-show at some local bar. Jesus those chaps can drink.

- Punched Gavin Rossdale in the back three times during a concert.

- Went thrift store shopping with Blonde Redhead when they were in town. Met them on the street, and they asked where the good ones were hidden. We spent a few hours trying on clothes with Kazu and Amedeo. So so nice. They thanked us during the show.

Yeah it was back in 2000? during the MTV Moby & Bush college tour thing. Hated Bush, loved Moby (at the time. yeesh.). About halfway through the show, he wanders out into the audience, still singing, and comes right to my row. He's walking in front of me singing -- and I distinctly remember this -- that Chemicals Between Us abortion of a track, and I feel like I need to do something. I mean, Gavin Rossdale is standing in front of me .

So, I punch him.

Thrice.

Not terribly hard, as there's securty around him, but hard enough that it's audible for a few seconds over the mic.

Proudest moment of my teenage life.

Probably my coolest story was when I went to an after-party on the roof of the Henry Fonda Theatre with members of the Shout Out Louds after their last show of their tour. It was pretty awesome, I was at the show on a press pass (I write for a magazine at Cal State Long Beach) and the pass was also admission to the party.
I talked to Adam Olenius for a little bit. He is such a nice guy, but he was kind of busy talking to people. We talked a little bit about music, He mentioned being a fan of Tom Waits and Swedish music in general.

I've talked to Kevin Barnes a couple times. At the first of Montreal show I went to, I also talked to Matthew Paris Dawson while he was still the bassist for the band for quite a while. He talked about his hat which was purchased at a TJ Maxx in Atlanta. He's a really cool guy. I saw of Montreal again (at a much bigger show) and I walked up to the bassist and said something along the lines of "great show... Matt right?" to which he replied that he was in fact Dave, the band's new bassist. He talked about being an of Montreal fan before getting into a band and how awesome that was, about the bands ever-increasing popularity and this and that it was a pretty cool conversation. BP Helium complimented me on my shirt.

I interviewed Jeffery Lewis who is a pretty awesome anti-folk artist while browsing the used CD racks of my local record store after seeing him open for The Mountain Goats the night before. It was a really cool interview except that I am not very good at doing interviews.

I talked to the members of Film School after they played an in-store at the same record store (fingerprints records in long beach)

Those are the ones that come to mind right now.

Buck 65 threw a pack of mentos at my face. The fruity kind. Dude used to be a shortstop, so he can throw pretty hard. I didn't catch it (and the crowd made an audible "awww" sound in response) but a cute girl picked it up for me and I split it with her. Buck and I chatted for about an hour after his set. He's a sweetheart.

When I was nary a child of 4, I came upon David Lee Roth in a San Francisco supermarket. He was there with his supermodel girlfriend, and he gazed upon the assortment of deli meats on display and said "cool!" (my mom told me about this, I barely remember it)

I met James Iha and Billy Howerdel at Denver International Airport security. They had played a A Perfect Circle show the night before at Red Rocks that I could not attend. Billy Howerdel's a really nice guy, even if his solo stuff is excruciating. James Iha is a tremendous dick. Looking back on it, Jeordie White was probably also there but I didn't know who he was at the time and thus did not address him.

Ricky Osbourne from Eddison is my boyfriend's step-uncle.

John Schneck from Relient K emailed me back, telling me how to play my favourite song of theirs.

I realize I am shamed for liking Relient K.  I miss the days before they were popular.  *sigh*

I was next in line after Coolio at the checkout of the music store and talked to him for a minutes or so. He had a really cracked-out voice.
"You play in a band?"
- "Yeah."
"What you play?"
- (me holding two packs of guitar strings and 5 picks in my hand) "Guitar and sometimes cello."
"Cool. I dig that. Need to use more weird instruments in bands yo."
That was mostly it.

Then I ran into Westlife (looking hungover as hell) in the Mexico City airport. What was 10 times more terrifying was the mob of teenage girls that was chasing them and almost zerg-rushed my group.

My good friend Jen's brother is playing at the Winnipeg folk festival and is being mentored / coached / whatevered by the singer of the Weakerthans.

I know about 30% of the current world of rap music through a college friend who is a very successful DJ and radio host.
Which, of course, means that I've never met any of them. It's a degrees-of-separation thing.

I shook the hand of the Pantéon Rococo guitarist after their show at a festival in 2006 and told him in semi-fluent Spanish how awesome I found their set.

Aaaaaand the singer of the Dropkick Murphys waved around my crutch at a show.

Sadly, I can't say I really know any of these people.

- Punched Gavin Rossdale in the back three times during a concert.

 :-)

My friend Mitch and I thank you very much. We recently had to review some of his abysmal solo efforts and so now hate him more than before.

- Kissed Carla Bozulich.

I honestly didn't think I would have that many to list.

screw Ian Macaye, this is the best thing on here. i used to be totally obsessed with Carla Bozulich, at one point i was invited to a party she was supposed to be at and flew to LA to be there - in the end i missed her :/ Carla called my girlfriend because we had bought a shirt from her and a year later she found the check on the floor as she was getting ready to tour europe and asked if it was still okay to cash it. It wasn't okay and we payed her at the next show she did in town, and she kissed my girlfriend. Recently at a Evangelista show she climbed off the stage and held my friends head, sung into his ear then did the same for another friend on the other side of me. I was a little put out.

A friend of mine used to date Tom Waits' daughter, though the closest i've been to him was watching in awe as he bought a banana at a grocery store.

I run into Azeem at the natural grocery store often and think how hypocritical his organic food revolutionaries song is. That aside he's very charming and nice to talk to.

Boots from the Coup has my same bank branch, so we run into each other occasionally and talk about music, he's usually stoned out of his mind.

Carla Kihlstedt is good friends with a couple of my friends and we've been talking a lot at parties about music, politics and mortality. She gives the best hugs. And free tickets to her shows is awesome. At some point maybe she can introduce me to Carla Bozulich and i can be less star struck then.

One of my exes was neighbors with one of the members of Team Dresch and would give me tshirts cds and got us free tickets to their only show in recent memory, unfortunately i never got to meet them :/

Mark Growden gave me a lapdance while singing a song about dirty fucking sex, on the accordion no less. Hot

i have one of Joni Mitchell's dulcimers and have played both Janis Joplin's and Doc Watson's guitar (they're my mother's, one day maybe they'll be mine)

When i was 12 i was invited to meet the Ramones by a family friend, i couldn't care less at the time. I'm not sure if i care that i passed that up.

I talked at length with Daniel Higgs of Lungfish about my poetry and his inspirations, and almost got a tattoo done by him.

I spent my Saturday night getting into an argument with Jaguar Love (part Blood Brothers, part Pretty Girls Make Graves, mostly awesome) as they turned up at the club I work at and expected free entry for themselves and their support band (one of whom is a good friend) - after politely telling them that if a couple of guys from each band paid entry (£5 on a Saturday night to a huge indie club) then the rest of them would be in for free - half of them had already got their stamps anyway (I was trying to be discreet with this/do them a favour whilst under the watchful eye of the guy who runs the venue). At this point, Cody, who had been rather schmoozy and trying to flatter his way in, suddenly pulled the whole 'oh my God, we have to pay? But we've just played a gig here, man' card, announced 'F** this' and flounced out of the venue.

Some people may sympathise with this - they are not a rich band, they've just pulled out of supporting The Faint because they can't afford the transport, but club nights are not charity funds for musicians wanting to get wasted, and in Brighton, half of the clubbing populace consists of scene-orientated musicians, most of whom will try and chance it but do so in a tongue in cheek fashion.

I am slightly gutted that they were such utter twats, though.

I have no idea who you're talking about, but I fully supprot your decisons to refuse arsewank musicians entry into a club,. Though, they prboably would've bought alot of beer to make up for it, as misicians are wont to do, depsite blagging. Perhap why they are so poor in the first place. ^ That makes perfect sense - (possibly because I have also been out on the town  :-) ) - I'm pretty sure they'd have upped the bar takings, but I kind of need people to pay their entry in order to get paid at the end of the night! Apparently, they all ended up at a pub where they were treated with indifference and had an early night of it. I like them as a band, but manners, people. Honestly.

If we're including our parents in this, my dad trumps just about everyone here...

He used to go on tour to do lighting design for the likes of Metallica (on their tour for the black album none the less), Poison, Ratt, and countless other bands before I was born... He stopped though when I was born because he didn't want to be on the road all the time.

It's really cool going to shows with him because he knows most of the venues out here in LA like the back of his hand...

Oh and apparently when I was little, my family went to the snow and my dad ran into one of the members of Metallica (I believe it was Lars, but I could be wrong) and if I have my story straight, they recognized each other and had themselves a nice chat...
(at least I believe that is the gist of what happened, although it's been a while since I heard the story and I do have quite the imagination)

Nothing much.

I saw cyndi lauper interviewed on a Canadian television show called The Hour.

When I saw sonic youth, someone offered me to go in front of them because of my height. Long story short, I ended up standing, front row literally about 10 feet from Thurston Moore for half of the show and then I managed to somehow get over to Kim Gordon and she smiled at me.

I'm more known in the local music scene and know alot of bands around here.

I had a couple of worthy experiences at pitchfork this past weekend. First and moremost, I overheard someone talking about backpacking through budapest before A Hawk and a Hacksaw's set, and I asked him about the subway there, since a movie I like a lot was shot there (Control). The guy had both been in the subway and seen the movie, so we talked about hungary and various things for a long time. Somewhere in our conversation he mentions being an old friend of jeremy barnes and introduces himself as eric, the drummer for elf power. I'm not really knowledgeable about elephant 6, but I realized later that I had been talking to eric harris, late of olivia tremor control.

Also, I almost got talked into getting a massage from a sweaty, mostly naked tim harrington.

For the one guy I've seen mention The Long Winters on here: I hung out with John Roderick and Eric Corson after they played a gig in Birmingham. I was wearing a Harvey Danger t-shirt at the time which I thought might've been awkward but they both approved [and I complimented Eric's awesome John Vanderslice tee]. They invited me to go drinking with them but I had to get home. Oh and at one point Eric put his arm around a female friend of mine who I started dating a few weeks later.

I've talked to Gareth, Tom and Neil from Los Campesinos! after a show in Bedford. In fact, me and Tom discussed Theme Park tactics - the ol' increase-the-salt/raise-the-price-of-soda trick and all that. Me and Gareth talked about how the NME are idiots and Sparky Deathcap is awesome.

And if online things count, I've had a fair few online discussions with Gareth Campesinos! [about downloading music and disagreeing about Kate Nash] and Julia Indelicate.

Oh, I've high-fived Alan Sparhawk and had a decent talk with Rob Pope from Spoon [who gave me a signed setlist]

The Who was at Woodstock; they couldn't get DYLAN.

Let's see...hm.

I've played with the Love Drums.
I've hung out with Penny Whiskey (and will be again in a few weeks)
Hung out, taken lessons from, and generally had a good time with Paleface (the whitest Indians, ever)
Met Melanie, requested a song, and she signed a picture of her for me
Met Billy Joe Shaver, talked with him, he signed my guitar (and my forehead)
...hm...

There's something else, and I just. Can't. Think of it.

Ann Tiley, Dean Goodsell, Al Wiseman, Tim Jones, Carole Edwards...they're all part of the Nashville folk scene, and they're great people...

Met some no-account emo band that broke down once. Sadly, I could play better than them and I'd only been playing guitar for about four months.

Friends with DAVE VITERNA...who is easily the best local guitarist, and could make it big-time if he really wanted to.

Musicians to two degrees...

My father has Johnny Cash's autograph; he wrote out his address and gave it to him. Cash owned one of my father's paintings until he died.
My aunt met Lennon's Aunt Mimi.
Guy I knew in Tennessee had a lesson from Joe Walsh and didn't realize who he was until a few days later.

I met Chris Trapper after one of his solo shows in May. In order to understand how excited I was, you need to know that I have been listening to his music for ten years, and he is my all-time favorite artist.

I met the lead singer of Emish a few days ago.

Hung out with the guys from Penny Whiskey, more in depth than last year. I had one of them sign my forehead, and the CD, and we talked a bit. Asking if I had to (hypothetically) kidnap one of them, who would be missed the least ,the vote was, more or less, Kirk. Paul said he probably wouldn't be missed much. This is the Paul that popped out with, "There's these two parrots, and they're sitting on a perch, and one says to the other, do you smell something fishy?"

"...'Cause they're sitting on a perch."

A couple of my friends and I are going to hang out with Benn Jordan after one of his upcoming shows, I guess because my friend's girlfriend has been chatting him up on the nets for a month or two now.  I'm just trying to figure out what the guy's gonna be like...that music doesn't come from a normal person.

I had lunch with Cyndi Lauper last week.  She talked about her family (particularly her 10-year-old related drama), fashion, and of course the state of music.  She also got fairly sloshed on mojitos and started calling people "rat-fucks".  Good times.

Walking out of a We Are Scientists/Arctic Monkeys concert, I happened to look over and see Keith Murray and he waved at me.  (He was looking directly at me so I'm 99% sure it was me he was waving to)  I went over and met him.  Since I am a dork, all I could think to say was "you guys are good."

Met Storm Large & got autograph and picture of me and her at a bar in Portland.  She was there to do this promotion thing.

ALMOST met Colin Meloy once.  He was hanging around outside the venue at an Arcade Fire concert that I went to, and he was literally less than arm's length from me and he was looking at me, but I was too nervous to say anything to him.  I was kicking myself for weeks after that.

Met Old 97's after a free show they played at one of my favorite record stores. (I didn't manage to get tickets to their actual show that night, so I went to that instead.)  Not sure if it counts because it was really a meet-and-greet sort of thing, but they are my favorite alt-country band.  I told Rhett Miller this and he said that was an honor.  He also said I had a cool name.  (Note:  I also saw someone there who looked EXACTLY like Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney.  I'm not sure if it were really her though.)

Never actually met her, but sometimes I email Carol van Dyk from Bettie Serveert (my favorite band) on her MySpace.  She doesn't always reply but when she does, she writes rather long emails, which I love, especially since I know she's busy.  She seems to be very nice, too.  We exchanged top ten CDs lists a few months back.

Used to hang out with a Canadian band called Hedley. Mostly they are lame radio-rock, but it was 3 years ago, and it was catchy, and it was all the Jager I wanted. Met some really cool people that worked on their tours and stuff.

Two of the guys in the band turned out to be real assholes though, so I distanced myself from the whole scene.

I met J. Mascis last night at a Built to Spill show (Dinosaur opened for them). He was just kind of like, standing in the middle of the floor before the show started. We talked for a minute or two and he signed my shirt. He was pretty cool, he seemed kind of out of it though; then again, this is J. Mascis we're talking about.

Belle and Sebastian signed me a drum head about a week after Isobel left.

I have plenty of local stories, but they're probably not bands people listening to the stuff discussed here would care about. I'm kind of a musical outlier in 'the scene.' Even lsitening to Ted Leo (used to live here) is beyond most of the people around here who care.

They played the worst cover of "Where Eagles Dare" ever at a show I saw.

I went to college with Ra Ra Riot, and I know some of them fairly well. Their manager always recognizes me at shows.

I accidentally hit the lead singer of the LunaChicks in the face with a bathroom stall door. She was pushing on a pull door, so I couldn't get in from the other side, so I kicked the door, and it slammed into her face. She was understandably upset, I feel less bad about it as years go on, but it was still a dick move.

I also comforted one of the members of Circle Takes the Square, after they played a show, and audience members asked them to turn it down so that they could hear their friends talking better. The crowd really just wasn't into it. I guess they're famous or something now.

I don't know, I don't think that it's polite, but they weren't very good, either. Perhaps it was an off night. Almost everyone went outside, and those that remained decided to talk to each other. Although, I have heard many people say that it's terrible that people did that, but have seen similar behavior with bands that aren't really popular, and no one seems to care.

I should probably mention this was in like 2002 that this all occurred, I don't know what was going on with said band at this time, as I do not listen to them, so perhaps they weren't really popular at that point.
