I never understood the novelty teapot.

I do approve of a thread about tea things, though. Tea is fantastic.

I have two teapots. One for home and one for work. They are both travel size, so I am thinking of getting a bigger one for home.

I'm starting to collect mugs, and teacups however.

steeps tea based in vancouver, BC makes some of the most incredible loose leaf tea around. here's a list (http://www.steepstealounge.com/list.html) of everything they offer - i think you can order online from most parts of the world.

most are novelty flavours and they're a bit pricey but my god. highly recommended.

I know how you feel. People are too obsessed with coffee (bad coffee, at that) to know the joys of tea. Someday I will get a proper tea set and I will be very very happy.

Or maybe I should make my own. Hmm...

Psh, no way! Tea is great whenever. Nothing is better than waking up hellsa early to watch the sunrise, while enjoying a nice hot glass of tea.

A friend of mine and his family are opening a coffee shop. He told me his mom was a tea nazi, like myself, and that because of such they will have some pretty amazing teas.

Fuck you, tea is not good when it is hot out and the tea is hot and you're hot.

Iced tea is great in summer, and hot tea is acceptable in the morning when it is maybe still a bit chilly out, but there is no way to enjoy tea in the heat beyond "oh yah, I'm totally the eurohipster TEA type not the COFFEE type"

I drink tea in summer. Especially in the mornings or when I'm at work, because it's typically freezing inside (or I think it is). But I see your point. Drinking hot tea when you're outside and it's hot does not sound like a good idea. Unless it's a chai tea milkshake, because that is perfectly acceptable.

Was saying "fuck you" really necessary?

I wasn't saying, "Oh, you are so horribly wrong!" I was simply disagreeing. I really like hot tea in the morning, and sometimes in the evening. Even if it is hot. Every night I take a hot bath, while sipping a hot cup of tea. I just enjoy tea.

And I'm not a "eurohipster". I just like tea better than coffee. I always have. Coffee just tastes bitter and gross. I'm told its because I've never had good coffee, so I'm willing to try out some good stuff, when it comes around. I don't like cheap tea much either. Tea is one of the one things I will buy the expensive non-store brand of.

ETA: How is drinking hot tea during the summer any different than drinking hot coffee during the summer?

Tea is going to be one of the things I miss when I go to Uni. I'm to used to proper nice leaf tea that my parents buy (none of that teabag nonsense).

The only time I'll drink coffee over tea is if I'm staying up late or hungover, otherwise it's tea all the way. I can't see what is wrong with drinking hot tea in the summer but I would probably rather have a cool drink or fruit tea.

It's kind've counter-intuitive, but many people seem to think drinking hot beverages actually cools you down when it's hot. Might be a psychological thing where it tricks your mind into thinking that you're colder than you actually are 'cause of some relative temperature wossname.

Besides that, the English would drink tea on the edge of a volcano. /stereotype.

Emaline, I don't drink hot coffee in the summer any more than I drink hot tea. Iced Coffee and Frappacinos are such a good invention. Of course, its hard to mix in honey with cold tea, so I may have to initially make it hot enough to just melt the honey, then add ice, and either lemon or milk.

Yeah, all of the 'old people' I know (parents and grandparents) always drink tea when it's hot, saying it 'cools them down,' which I never understood but hey! It is what they do!
Also with our blistering summers, a hot cup of tea probably seems pretty cool. I still drink tea in summer, of course, I have since I was very small, but only in the morning and late at night when it is a bit cooler. Or I'm somewhere that's air-conditioned to a comfy cool 23-ish C.

Iced coffee is gross.  I don't like my coffee tasting watery.  I've never had a Frappacino, though.  I can't remember, are those the little Starbucks drinks in the little bottles you can get at convenience stores?
Title: Re: Teapots, mugs, and other things of that nature that are amazing.
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 26 May 2008, 20:47
Either those or the things that they actually sell that are sort of like Coffee shakes. I like them, and I like Iced Coffee, because like any other drink you add ice to to cool it down you aren't supposed to let it melt into the damn drink. But you add half and half and sugar, its not as if you're trying to down strong black coffee by itself cold, that just tastes nasty.

If I am drinking hot tea, I'll usually skip out on the milk, but I gotta have the sugar. What can I say, I have an Amurrcan style addiction for all things sweet, bitter doesn't agree with me.

Yes and no, Frappacino comes from Frappe, because the original drink was coffee, milk, sugar and ice, poured into a blender, and Frappe'd. The Frappacinos in the bottle, are just flavoured iced coffee.

Tea should only be served hot, strong, citrusy  and with maybe a dash of milk, unless it's breakfast tea then the milk is for cereal only.

Citrus shouldn't be a requirement. I occasionally put citrus in my tea. Usually mid day, while its hot out. But it's still a pretty rare occurrence.

Just now, jasmine. Fancy teapots, what?

Jasmine tea!  For the most part, when I drink tea, I drink either looseleaf Earl Grey or darjeeling, but there's something intoxicating and perma-summery about jasmine.  Though coffee and other teas fill my (standard issue ceramic) mug more frequently, jasmine tea may be my favorite hot beverage.

I was excited when, at a tea restaurant nearby, I found an Earl Grey / jasmine mix, but I was sorely disappointed.  The flavors clash rather than compliment, and the scent is almost nauseating.  Shame.

apparently the reason that tea makes you cool is that it pushes your internal body temp up just a bit, thus making you sweat, and the sweat brings down both your internal and external temperature. (this is just what I can remember of what my mother told me on the subject along time ago)

I never really drank either tea or coffee when I was a kid, they always just seemed to adult for me, so I never really got the taste for either of them, I suppose I could drink tea now, but the even the smell of coffee repels me. I am however a big fan of hot chocolate, especially the stuff that the coffee shop at my uni makes, with a shot of peppermint oil in it.

coffee and tea don't have to be a war! i really enjoy both.

also, i too heard that when you drink hot beverages during a hot day you shock your system into thinking you're cooling down so i tried this last summer and that was the first and only time i ever collapsed from heatstroke so i... doubt that really works. maybe for some people. i still like hot beverages during summer though, as long as i take them early in the morning.

I drink tea in summer, most definitely. However I drink different types of tea in summer to what I do in winter (and I don't mean "hot" and "cold"). Earl Grey is a superbly refreshing summer tea. Darjeeling can also be good. In winter I drink smokier teas like Russian Caravan or Lapsang Souchong, which I'd find much too "heavy" in flavour for summer. When I used to ride home from uni in summer I found a cup of tea refreshed me infinitely better than a glass of water.

Oh man this is totally my favourite thread of ever.

I have a complete tea set: 2 tea caddys for holding the loose leaf tea, 2 fancy tea spoons (one with a teapot shaped handle the other is just a little fancy spoon), 2 milk jugs, 3 strainers, 2 dish things to put the strainer in to avoid drips, a tea cosy plus heat proof mat made of the same pattern, 2 other heat proof mats, a tea tray, a set of cup and saucers and 3 pots. I have one set for my parents house and one for my flat when I am at uni.

My favourite tea pot is my little brown one that does about 4 cups worth and pours excellently, I got it free at a church jumble sale because it has a tiny chip on the underside of the lid and they couldn't sell it. I also have a tea pot with a lot of pigs round the side of it (all the pigs are pink except for one which is black and facing the other way, I think it might be a veiled message about racism) and a plain white one which doesn't pour particularly well.

Most of my tea set was pilfered from my gran's cold dead hands.

I drink PG tips loose leaf because it is reasonably priced, easy to find and fucking tasty. I've also got some really nice egyptian "dust" tea (loose leaf that is even more loose) that I bought for £1 when I was out there. All the writing on it is in arabic so I'm quite glad it turned out nice as I had no idea what I was getting.

I will try to get pictures of my tea set, maybe.

Waaaiiiiitaminute, what? I don't remember seeing anything like that. I don't doubt it might be true...it is a rather large country.

On a similar note, though, when I ate in the dining halls, I'd pour coffee over tea in the mornings after an all-nighter. I don't think I'd actually do that now with stuff I had bought, because it tasted damned terrible.

Some fifteen years ago I brought a packet of tea back from China.  It wasn't the nicest I have had; but that was of little consequence in comparison to the message I found on a piece of paper inside the box.  I suppose these days I should scan it, but I haven't; here is a guaranteed accurate transcription:

Not an asshole; but this is the only forum anywhere that I have been part of where people do not sign their words.  Also an oldie's habit, I guess, but I can try to remember to leave my name off if it offends you.

What offends me is the same amount of screen space (and more bandwidth) taken up by signature quotes that get less funny each time they are seen and get far more in the way of reading a series of posts; but that's the style of this place, so I don't complain.

<edit>OK, I've turned off signature display to deal with my annoyance too; which wouldn't have worked with my name as I type it each time (signing it, you see).

I'm pretty disappointed in my local coffee shop. Its seems like they don't carry English breakfast anymore. They used to carry it, but now they only have British Breakfast. Is there a difference? It seems English breakfast is a bit stronger than British.

There's not really any such thing as either; they're just names that people use when selling a generous cooked breakfast.  And they vary through England alone (e.g., you'll generally get black pudding in the north, but not usually in the south), let alone further afield.  I've been to a Welsh hotel that sold me a "Welsh Breakfast", which was the same as English but overcooked - but that may not be typical.

How is it different to 'British Breakfast"? Or is her coffee shop trying to be fancy?

I normally drink Irish Breakfast, which is stronger than English Breakfast, I believe. I also have some spiffy Blood Orange tea from The Tea Cantre, but it gets bitter very quickly, so I don't like it as much as I thought I would.

Paul, I gotta say that even though nobody else said anything about it, that description is completely hilarious.

and why is it that I want to try black pudding so much? Maybe its just some kind of morbid fascination of it, but when I was watching No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain and saw him eat it with that egg on top it looked pretty good. At least he made it seem good. Heck, the deep fried Hagus looked good in that episode too, so who knows.

Yeah, all of the 'old people' I know (parents and grandparents) always drink tea when it's hot, saying it 'cools them down,' which I never understood

The human body senses changes in temperature, not absolute temperatures. By raising your core body temperature slightly on a hot day you can make your skin feel cooler.

@Pwhodges: Black pudding is a staple of fried breakfasts on the Isle of Wight, and seemingly fairly common in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. Perhaps you mean a more northerly sort of south? I can't remember ever having a fried breakfast (outside London) north of Salisbury and south of York.

I recently discovered that the reason every time I order an iced coffee I am given some pathetic gruel-like concoction is because the forces of ghastly snobbish yuppie wankishness have decided to call a combination of vanilla ice cream, coffee and milk, which I regard as an iced coffee a Monto-Verdi-Pele-Mocha-Frocha-Frappa-Bappa-Parappa-The-Rappa-Cino, or something along those lines. I remember where it is on the menu of Costa Coffee. Only those fucking bastards make it with Espresso. NO! ESPRESSO TASTES LIKE SHIT! STOP USING IT IN EVERYTHING! AND STOP ONLY OFFERING AMERICANOS AS IF IF THEY'RE BLACK COFFEES! THERE IS A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AMERICANO AND A PROPERLY BREWED BLACK FILTER COFFEE AND I WANT THE LATTER AND I WOULD ALSO PREFER IF YOU CALLED IT A REAL SIZE LIKE SMALL MEDIUM OR LARGE GODS I HATE YOU ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

On the subject of tea receptacles, I have these which I inherited from my grandparents:

From my English grandmother, I have six cups and saucers like so:

And from my Australian grandmother, I have these two:

Very dainty, Inlander!

Also, I agree with Storm Rider. Espresso is great, though taste-wise it is a completely different kettle of fish to other methods. Furthermore, it is the Best Way To Make Coffee. If it tasted bad, possibly you had a shit barista.

Also, for a while I thought Irish Breakfast tea was where they put whiskey in. Like the coffee...

steeps tea based in vancouver, BC makes some of the most incredible loose leaf tea around. here's a list (http://www.steepstealounge.com/list.html) of everything they offer - i think you can order online from most parts of the world.

most are novelty flavours and they're a bit pricey but my god. highly recommended.

WRONG

Steeps is based out of Edmonton, Alberta! I know this because I go to the very firstest one all the time.

ALL the time.

I'm kind a boring, I only ever really have Orange Pekoe (actually the proper grading).

I do not think that is an apt metaphor at all. It is not a different kettle of fish, it is simply a much richer kettle of fish. Instead of boiling the kettle, then adding chopped fish, we are boiling the kettle and shooting it through a filter with fish puree under serious pressure. It is still fish soup, just way more potent.

You make a compelling and tasty argument.

Also, I had genuine Moroccan tea made by a genuine Moroccan the other day. It was pretty good! He basically stuffed a small mint plant into a tea-pot and boiled it with an absolute shit-load of sugar.

Is that what they call it? I've been doing that for years, going into the garden, getting a massive bunch of wild mint, sticking it in a tea pot with a decent amount of sugar. I always just called it "Mint Tea".

Well, I'm sure they just call it tea. But he used a different variety of mint than the one generally used here for tea. No idea what either are called, but it definitely had a different flavour.

I don't drink tea often, but I have developed a taste for Earl Grey, especially with a bit of lemon juice mixed in. I don't have anything fancy, just a pot that holds four or five mugs worth of water, plenty of mugs, and a few japanese-styled cups (you know, no handles, calligraphy-style painting on the side), but I don't drink from those since they are so small.

Iced tea is pretty much the definitive taste of summer for me, my mother makes a mix of peppermint and black tea, sweeten to taste (sweet tea is the one true tea).

edit: Oh, I always drink tea from bags, I think I had leaf tea once, but that was when I was four or five, don't remember it other than how we finally got a use out of that funny-looking utensil in the drawer.

I drink this type called Red Label from Lipton that is only sold in Indian grocery stores, as far as I have seen.  It can be extremely bitter and you have to drink it with milk (we make a big deal about the type of milk we put in it too).  But if it is made right, with the correct balance of milk and sugar, it's absolutely delicious!  I like most types of herbal tea and earl grey as well, but most black teabag teas taste horrible to me; they don't taste as nice as loose teas, and they're a lot weaker!

I drink coffee when I really need to wake up/ punish my system, but it makes me pee too much and it makes my heart race.  Basically, I only drink it at college because teabag tea doesn't have enough of a kick and loose tea requires too much fancy-pants equipment.  As far as I'm concerned, a frappucino is basically like shoving a bunch of ice cream down your throat.  Tasty, but not that good if you want to focus.  And I always find tea pretty refreshing, even when it's hot out.

I discovered two types of tea courtesy of a friend: roibosh (I spelt that wrong, but basically it's red bush tea) and spiced chai. I bought some vanilla chai from the London Tea Company (http://www.londontea.co.uk/) and it smells gorgeous, but I find it easier to drink when it's very stewed and mixed with hot chocolate. When I'm rich and independant (so basically never) I will buy all my tea from the LTC because it's organic, fair trade, tasty and packaged in very cool origami boxes. But their instruction to brew for "1-3 minutes" is crap; nothing less than ten will do.

(according to a tea company): Growing tea in the US has been tried since the late nineteenth century. Tea gardens were laid out in South Carolina but were not a commercial success. Since the 1990s there has been a revival of US interest in tea growing, with increasing momentum as US interest in tea consumption has developed.

How about the people who just can't be bothered to find leaf tea when they have teabags, and don't know where the utensil meant for use with leaf tea is anyway?

I had leaf tea once, my grandmother brought it, but it was too bitter for me at the time. I almost always had herbal tea, chamomile or something like that, probably has something to do with how there is an herbal tea factory in boulder.

Indian tea, Japanese tea, and Kenyan tea are not exactly "Western" teas.  Most Americans think of tea as the weak teabag stuff or really weak iced tea with tons of sugar in.  And I don't understand this whole "chai" thing; you just get a bunch of milk, throw some spices in and maybe a GRAIN of black tea and call it chai?

I also really hate teabags with "honey" in them.  They taste and smell sort of like urine.  Fresh honey does not.  What a waste of honey when all the bees are dying!

I don't drink tea and so am a huge disappointment to most of my family (My grandfather owned and operated a huge tea plantation in Sri Lanka) though the focus has now shifted, quite positively, to my cousin who now imports tea from the same plantation which was sold to a friend of the family.

I don't drink coffee either so I guess I'm a huge disappoinment to the coffee corporations but I think I'm ok with that. The local cafe staff don't mind because they get my business in the form of milkshakes. Milkshakes > tea/coffee, for me anyway.

I typically drink juice. And then I crash around mid-day and promptly have a caffeine fix or take a nap.

Well, that was my old schedule because of school. I dunno how things will go once I get a job and stuff and can't nap in the middle of the day. No more hour+ breaks! Oh no!

How do you wake up in the morning without coffee?

I get up, eat breakfast (maybe), have a shower, get dressed and go about whatever business I have for the day. I don't really need caffeine to do this. Granted I am a little slow moving in that first 15 minutes or so but chances are, if I have time for breakfast then I have time for it to take about half an hour.

Honestly, living without caffeine is even easier than not drinking because occasionally I do really feel like having a drink with my mates (which is tempered by not liking the taste of alcohol and knowing full well what happens when I get drunk) but I have never felt like choking down a cup of hot, bitter liquid.
