Title: Just noticed...
Post by: PassiveTheory on 09 Jun 2008, 23:29
I just noticed that in strip 957 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=957 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=957)) that Dora has a Smiths poster/portrait up in her room.

I wouldn't peg her as a Smiths fan. Anybody else find this amusing?

Dora's a reformed goth. All the goths I know are into The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode etc. So it's really not surprising.

I'm pretty sure there's an early comic where she mentions listening to The Cure. If we're lucky maybe someone will even dig it up.

Yeah I know about her being a Cure fan but she NEVER mentioned the Smiths.

Also... the Smiths are more of an indie band, I've known some goths who were into the Smiths but most of the Smiths fans I know are indie aficionados or library-types.

You're joking, right?

If all the goths of the world went and formed their own nation, How Soon Is Now would be their national anthem.

I'm not... Most of the kids I've met who are into the Smiths are more likely to listen to Belle and Sebastian or the Shins than Clan of Xymox or Siouxie and the Banshees.

Seriously?  I've never met a so called goth that liked Belle and Sebastian or the Shins; in fact, most of them have referred to them as "those pussy indie bands".  Every single one has loved The Smiths to a rather disturbing extent.  Morrissey commands a legion of goths and self-important assholes....with some decent folk thrown in here and there.

Morrissey commands with a subtle mix of mental anguish and sexual frustration that appeals to both goths and indie afficianados, although not exclusively-I am neither and also a smiths fan.

In my experience with those fans, you are the rare exception to the rule.  I've met maybe a dozen people that like The Smiths and fall into that category.  The rest I know tend to be high and mighty about music to an extent that makes me want to vomit.  I'm not a fan of The Smiths myself, but that's because I just never found the music appealing; it's not my cup of tea.

It's true. I actually didn't listen to The Smiths until I heard "Boy With A Thorn In His Side" on the musical/drama miniseries Blackpool. I wonder if all Smiths fans have bad taste in t.v. in common...I've never ventured to ask.

nope, I would peg her as a smiths fan.

But then again I only think a max of MAYBE 40 people know who the smiths are in my town.

Heck I only know who they are because of a skateboard video.

(for those of you who skate or are interested)

The comic where Dora mentions liking The Cure is #116.

How Soon Is now reminds me of The Craft (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115963/), which i can totally relate to goths.
