Title: The greatest album of this decade
Post by: Akeboshi on 10 Jun 2008, 11:00
Hello, everyone.  Please don't think the subject line too pretentious, because I promise I have something of interest to share with you all.

First things first.  I'm a long-time reader of QC, occasional peruser of these boards, and I wanted to introduce myself.  My name's Akeboshi, I'm an eclectic music fan with tastes ranging from Iron and Wine to the Devin Townsend Band, and from Del the Funky Homosapien (not his new album unfortunately) to Andy McKee.  Pleased to meet you.

Now, the album I not-so-humbly have deemed the greatest album this decade, is by a UK-based duo entitled Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip.  These two fellas first rose to popularity some months ago with the release of their wildly tongue-in-cheek song "Thou Shalt Always Kill".  If you've not seen this video or heard the song, please see here:     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoN6XfyQsr4
Other videos by them are available on their blog:      http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=100291214&MyToken=f0c532dc-fb76-412d-abc1-cec7193ca5a4

The Electronica/Hip-Hop amalgamation that these two create is an undefinable genre in and of itself.  Dan Le Sac's skills of remixing and melodic flow are amazing.  Coupled with Scroobius Pip's lyrical brilliance, these guys are two of the most influential musicians on me in the current day.  Pip's lyrics are smart, witty, contemplative, and sometimes downright haunting.  Dan Le Sac's rhythms have had me shaking in emotion and thrashing my head like a Dragonforce concert.

I grabbed their first album "Angles" from the internet because initially Amazon didn't feel like importing it.  Now having listened to the entire album for over 2 days straight, I found someone on Amazon and purchased an import copy immediately.  This album is so good, and its artists are so talented, that I want to give them all the support I have, be that a bit of money or good, old-fashioned word of mouth.  If you've got $20, Pandora, or a torrent client, give it a listen.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Peace.

I wrote a review on this album, and while it isn't the album of the decade, it is definitely one of the best albums of 2008. Also, the two put on a great live show.

This is excellent italian first posting! welcome. I haven't heard the album as of yet (or heard of it, actually). I'll check it out.

But the greatest album of the decade is that Owls record. No other contenders.

Yeah, I guess I can't really declare it album of the decade from two days of listening, but I definitely agree that it's one of the best of 2008.  I've just been waiting for these two to release an album for so long, and they certainly didn't disappoint.

Such a fantastic album.

Have you seen them live, Akeboshi?

They were fantastic for what I saw at Coachella... Shame I didn't get to see the whole set but I did remember hearing the title track live before I heard it on record and it was impressive.

Unfortunately, no.  I'm not familiar with that festival.  I guess that's not terribly surprising considering I'm on the east coast, so naturally I missed it.  Knowing about it now though I will definitely try and see it in the future.  Holy HELL there were a lot of bands I wanted to see on the setlist.

*crosses fingers for small US tour*

I've not heard the album yet, but Beat That My Heart Skipped is definitely up for one of my top songs I've heard this year. I shall investigate further...

Fantastic album but not one I'd call "album of the decade".
I missed them play in Liverpool a couple of months ago, they're supposed to be pretty amazing live.

They're my favourite band of this year and if you haven't got the album you really really should download it.
British hip hop it seems is finally on the mend.

Seriously, guys like Roots Manuva need to step up their game.

British hip hop has been on the mend slowly but surely ever since Skinnyman.

it's only one guy.

it's two guys,
Dan Le Sac & Scroobius Pip.

Dan's the DJ and Pip (who has a bitchin' beard by the way) is the MC.

Roots wrote Witness (1 Hope). Until these guys write something that good he can do whatever he likes.

This record really is pretty good though, I like it a lot. And Pip's beard is superb.

Haha, get told Zerodrone  :-P

These guys are pretty fucking good.  @ Bowers, where were they playing in Liverpool?

Greatest album this decade?  Probably something like Fennez Endless Summer or BSS You Forgot It In People

Edit - Was the Avalanches this decade?

I think I mentioned somewhere here that the greatest record out this decade is Third.

I remember we all agreed on the subject.

mehh
I still think Dummy is better

Part of me wants to say Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
also The Postal Service - Give up
and The Knife - Silent Shout

...I really can't decide

I don't think you read the thread. (also, by this point I would definitely wager Third > Dummy, but Dummy was not released in this decade so far so it doesn't really matter).

BSS You Forgot It In People

okay i think i'm the only person on this board who thinks this album shouldn't ever be a candidate for best of anything, especially this decade.

anyway, don't get me started on bss!

Title: Re: The greatest album of this decade

No, I find BSS intensely boring so I wouldn't recommend them for anything either.

I'd rank Third in the top ten this decade, not best.

Maybe...

1.  Kid A
2.  Elephant
3.  Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
4.  White Blood Cells
5.  Third

Not one single one of you mentioning This Will Destroy You's s/t? For shame, QC. For shame.

I don't know if I'd say this is the greatest album of the decade but I'd certainly consider it for the top 10.

I'd probably be a whore and give my top album of the decade to one of the Silver Mt. Zion releases.

I'm not sure how.

Yeah you're right... Weird. I'll edit that in a second.

Also, you missed Agaetis Byrjun.

I'm a so-so Sigur Ros fan, it's good sleep music but not something I'd put on repeat outside of the context of winding down a night.

I think that's why we won't be voting for the Thread Title. At least, insofar from what I've seen, I hope we won't be voting for this award.
Really, the contender list goes on and on. Right now the number of people on the list come out to be an imaginary number. The decade isn't over yet guys, so let's wait until 2010.

I submit to you that everything for the present is relative and that to truly know the greatest album of the decade, one will need to observe what album from this decade has influenced most the albums in the next decade.

So instead, I propose wishful thinking.

I would like to think that The Runners Four becomes quite influential on the 2010's.

By that standard, we would have to name Britney Spears' first album Greatest Album of the Nineties.

By that standard, we would have to name Funhouse Greatest Album of all time.
