Title: Harsh noise anyone?
Post by: not even hope on 24 Jun 2008, 12:48
discuss harsh noise related things here, (since the only harsh noise thread on this forum is from back in 2005 and i don't want to bump it, plus it was about general noise and i just want to talk about harsh noise)

i'll start this off by asking does anyone here play harsh noise?

Harsh Noise? If this is the name of a genre, it is a ridiculous name, like Intelligent Dance Music is ridiculous.
Would this encompass bands like Lightning Bolt and the Psychic Paramount?
Or would this be about bands like Black Dice and the Boredoms?

Also, I do not play harsh noise. I do try to rock out though.

Edit: I decided to check out the internet knowledge database for information on harsh noise, because I feel like I might not be the only person who was confused a bit by the thread subject. This is apparently harsh noise. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harsh_noise)

Why do you want to talk about it?  What's to say?  Certainly the only examples I've heard (e.g. Fuck Buttons) don't bear talking about in my view, though I guess talking's better than listening in this case.

Those are two amazing bands but "loud and noisy" =/= "noise".

It's really what we should be talking about, rather than this "harsh noise"  or whatever

Are we counting guys like justice yeldham and the dynamic ribbon device?

Because it can be pretty cool.
I sometimes make merzbow type noises, I was doing sound at this garage hardcore gig once, and inbetween sets fired up my laptop and subjected a load of midteen hardcore kids to me playing that.

Justice Yeldham definitely fits in my book, since he does seem to abandon anything like composition in favour of just harsh sound. I've still not seem him live unfortunately though so I can't say for sure, I'm just basing that on the little I've seen on the internet.

For me harsh noise can be great live but I almost never sit down and listen to it at home. Often it seems to straddle the line between musical performance and performance art, and Yeldham seems a good example of that. Kylie Minoise as well, with his effects pedals strapped to his body and unpredictable antics. I've seen Filthy Turd do some great things with attaching a contact mic to a cymbal, filling it with lighter fluid, setting it alight and then playing it. Not safe of course, but if you want safe then noise is not the place for you. I'm rather sorry I missed the gig Smell & Quim played not too long ago as well, apparently it was highly ridiculous and their remix on the Stalingrad album (I think it's of Hanged Man Will Repent) is satisfyingly brutalising. I've also got a soft spot for Sickness, I think the only harsh noise artist who I liked enoughlive to risk buying a CD. He had contact mics hooked up to big blocks of metal he slammed around while he manipulated the signal through a table of effects pedals. As a performance it was great but I have to admit I've only played the album a couple of times.

What about pleasant noise?  Pleasant noise is what we should be talking about.  Like the sound of birds chirping in a tree, or a babbling brook, or maybe the sound of a heavy rain on the roof.

The sound of heavy rain against a window whilst I read a good book is a lovely noise. Am I odd for finding the sound of rain a happy thing?

I find air conditioners make a pleasant noise.

Just the clicking sounds along with a hum. You can sit there and try pick out melodies.

GG Allin is what we should be talking about.

GG Allin was a worthless piece of misogynistic shit.  Nobody should ever talk about him.

Not much of the stuff being mentioned here is actually harsh noise.

I have a semi-active project that has some harsh noise influences, among other things:

Well, I make noise. Sometimes harsh, but mainly just wierd shit.

The only harsh noise I have listened to is merzbow, and a bit of whitehouse if that counts. Any chance you guys could upload some to the mediaf!re thread for me to listen to?

I wouldn't claim to know much about the genre, but I found out about it through this one guy called Heccubus who has a whole bunch of music projects up on his website, as well as stuff by other people.

That is a link to the page of his harsh noise project. I listened to "Collapse" all summer last year so I can heartily recommend that one. "Vicomtesse Antonia The Linds'ays", "Savage Vol. 1" and "Contaminated" are also quite good. All tracks are free to download btw.

Just thought I'd chip in, I'll go back to lurking now.

Swans isn't noise at all.

Sorry.

A helpful hint: if it doesn't sound something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFpkNf1M6LQ) it's probably not noise.

I cannot emphasise this enough! You have to see Justice Yeldham live. It's pretty much the most intense thing I've ever seen. I think he's touring at the moment, actually... apparently he'll be in Birmingham next month, at some festival?

Otherwise, come to Australia! The record label he runs puts on a weekly gig, it's pretty fun.

I don't really sit down and listen to noise either, for me it's definitely a live thing. Also, I'll be doing a gameboy noise set next week with a friend of mine. Should be fun.

I make harsh noise! (That band name is actually going to be used for something else soon, and thus the Myspace)

So does Merzbow, Whitehouse, Masonna, KK Null, Government Alpha, etc.

Merzbow is the best by far though.

The man bites through glass and smashes it on his head. It's pretty awesome.

And this gameboy noise set, when/where shall it be going down?

I like harsh noise. I also like soft noise like Vladislav Delay. Some early Black Dice seemed to have a good mix of the two.

When I'm looking to relieve stress I sometimes record harsh noise under the monkier Ket Dk. There will be a myspace soon.

I've been dabbling in playing harsh noise, setup a feedback loop and have my drum friend do his thing. John Wiese is pretty crazy, it's actually hard to listen to sometimes. Kites is also pretty good. There's a local guy who calls himself Autoerotic Asphyxiation who's really good. If you're looking for "nicer" noise there is always Axolotl and Burning Star Core.
