Title: Dr. Horrible
Post by: DanteShepherd on 01 Jul 2008, 08:13
Just in case no one has seen this (although I doubt it), Whedon has a new musical for online viewing only coming out shortly:

http://www.drhorrible.com/

This has potential to amuse me endlessly.

And a review (with a description that even the DVD extras will be a musical):

This looks interesting enough. I'll probably check it out (especially since it's free). An interesting project for these guys to undertake, to say the least.

I think it's going to be hilarious.
My sister is a bigger Wheadon fan then me and has been following the project religiously for months.
I love Neil Patrick Harris.

Yes, it is wonderful. My sister basically forced me to watch it this morning.
I liked the song in the Laundry-Mat.

This is amazing. I'm so glad it is available outside the US even though the video on the site is from hulu, because I feared it wouldn't be. Watched it twice already, and looking forward to the next "act".
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: imagist42 on 16 Jul 2008, 21:17
Watched it. The first bit of monologue while he's blogging is kind of meh, but I held on until the first song started and I was quite pleased with the rest. Not laugh-out-loud funny all the way through, but refreshingly good for something free on teh interwebs.

I also like the line "Oh, look at my wrist, I've got to go..." followed up by peaking into the washer and saying "I don't love these."
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: RobbieOC on 17 Jul 2008, 09:29
"You know, like pie."

That was my favorite. Something about it, I don't know.

I'm pretty sure the line he's talking about is "The hammer is my penis." Cause that's the one that made me laugh the most.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: imagist42 on 17 Jul 2008, 12:50
Yeah, that's at 11:15, I just didn't want to spoil the surprise for anyone else.

The build-up and timing of the delivery is just perfect.

Post by: Betagold on 17 Jul 2008, 14:12
I love this.  I got linked to it off of the new comic from the Mac Hall guys, the name escapes me, and fell in love with it.  This would make an awesome stage musical...
Thoughts:
The hammer is my penis is one of the top three lines of this whole thing.
Brand New Day and With My Freeze Ray tie for the best songs so far.

Post by: Ladybug on 17 Jul 2008, 15:29
It's a brand new day. Yeah, the sun is high. All the birds are singing that you're gonna die!

I seriously love this so much. I've recommended it to a bunch of people, and they've all loved it as well.

Fucking yes.

"...smells like cumin..."

I always wanted Firefly to come back as the show that could redefine the medium and prove that an internet-based TV show could survive. I really fucking hope this is where he's headed because fucking fell guys, maybe it could happen?

Like I would rather wait for the DVD but bloody hell I am going to pay for downloads of this to show my support. Fucking right.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: imagist42 on 17 Jul 2008, 20:39
I almost feel like paying for the download just to get better sound quality. The distortion in the streaming audio is almost bad enough to ruin "Brand New Day" for me. And after all, it's only $3.99.

Hi. Uh. My name is parm and..... uh.... well, I've never really liked anything Joss Whedon has done. Apart from Firefly. Buffy Season 8 is pretty much the best thing Joss has ever done.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: Tom on 20 Jul 2008, 21:13
Guys, I was 11 when Buffy finished it's run on TV. Since then It's only ever been late night re-runs on TV or Cable and I've only watched the first two episodes on TV links. I didn't know about Buffy 4/3 years ago when I went to Hong Kong so I didn't end up going home with an illegally produced box-set but I did end up coming home with Firefly. Full season, the cheapest legal option is  over $300 Australian. I would've downloaded it by now but my ISP gives us 2GB a month and in family of 7 that just barely lasts a week even without people downloading. For a similar reason I haven't yet been able to watch this yet.

Do you have a D.V.D. rental place nearby? Are you a member? It will almost certainly have every single episode of Buffy available for weekly hire.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: Tom on 20 Jul 2008, 21:29
They have the first 3 seasons, each season is divided into groups of 3 or 4 episodes and you have to pay 5 dollars to borrow it for a week. In the long run if you were watching it that way it'd probably be a better idea to just buy the DVD outright. I live in a supposedly affluent area in the Eastern Suburbs so things are rarely ever fair, I really ought to get a job.

It's amazing how rewatchable it is!

And it feels weird when I talk to people about it, and I actually use the phrase "Joss has become much better at musicals since Once More, With Feeling." But he has! The music in this is just way better than OMWF, though that is probably because his brother actually wrote the music this time. Which was a good decision by everyone involved.

Did any of you guys read the Dark Horse tie-in comic about Captain Hammer? So good.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: MarkTBSc on 26 Jul 2008, 04:19
Damn I loved 'Dr. Horrible'. Yeah, I was kinda upset by it going dark but then that's Joss. I heard that he was considering a sequel. If he does then I suspect that'll lighten the mood.

Did anyone else notice that Dr. Horrible isn't actually evil? Sure the Evil League of Evil is evil but Dr. Horrible is actually Chaotic Good. I suspect that the Sequel will involve the good Doctor becoming disenchanted with the league, bringing about their destruction and then organising his own criminal organisation out of the disenfranchised henchmen's guild.

Hmmm... So molecularly destabilised gold smells like cumin? Worth remembering.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: MarkTBSc on 26 Jul 2008, 05:49
Are you sure? I saw Dr. Horrible, with Captain Hammer bang-to-rights, hesitate.

Plus the Captain is such a Douche I'm not sure killing him would count as Evil.

Of course, it's possible you're being Sarcastic... I can't tell when you do that and it's annoying.

I mean "Wow sarcasm! That's original!"
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: RobbieOC on 26 Jul 2008, 14:35
I think a pretty strong case could be made for Dr. Horrible being evil, though. I mean, he's actively pursuing evil deeds just to be evil, which seems pretty evil to me. He stole the "Wonderflonium" and he had no problem taking advantage of Penny's death to get into the ELE (though, this is open to quite a bit of interpretation, and I wouldn't be surprised if we find out in a possible sequel that he only took the position to take out Bad Horse and co.) - all of which paint him to be a pretty evil dude. Hesitating to do a bad thing doesn't make you good. It just means you're human. We don't know whether he would have actually killed Captain Hammer or not, unfortunately.

Though, some of his actions are understandable since Captain Hammer was such a douche to him.
Title: Re: Dr. Horrible
Post by: MarkTBSc on 26 Jul 2008, 15:48
There's a line between evil and bad. The best example I ever heard - which came, oddly enough, from a science fiction dog - was that Evil was hurting someone who hadn't hurt you or when hurting was not required.

Dr. Horrible stole the Wonderflonium which is bad, criminal but not evil (I think we'd all agree that while Mal Reynolds could be bad, he wasn't evil). He attempted to unseat the rightfully elected leader of the people at the Town hall which is bad, but not Evil (What's that saying? When treason prospers then none dare call it treason). The whole 'killing' thing can be argued both ways. He had an opportunity to kill the man he hates most in the world but didn't, and maybe even couldn't, do it. That's not evil. Taking his place in the ELoE after Captain Hammer caused Penny's death could be viewed as both unethical and immoral  but not Evil. He may not even have realised what he was doing at the time if he was too traumatised.

The Doctor's whole game plan was to take over the world and make it a better place. I'd say that's a good goal, even if it involves some sundry naughtiness along the way. To my mind he's more Han Solo or Mal Reynolds than The Emperor or Adelai Niska. In fact, under my initial description, Captain Hammer would fall into the Evil category.

And y'know what? It occurs to me that I'm taking this waaaaay too seriously.

Ummm.... Wibble? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nAuL4gyevQ

Just watched all three acts - they are all still available online at the moment.  Great stuff: funny, dark, smart!  Great interweaving duets showing the different points of view.

I almost hate to analyze Dr. Horrible’s character, because the musical itself presents him in his proper complexity.  Anything we say here is going to be oversimplification.  On the surface, he is a wannabe supervillain, so you might think he’s a bad/evil character.  But he isn’t motivated by the desire to hurt people.  His view is that the world sucks and the solution is for him to take over.  And of course, he wants the girl he is too shy to approach.  But he just can’t win for losing.  Captain Hammer, the self-centered boob, has all the luck and popular opinion on his side.  The tragic ending leaves us with the perfect amount of dissatisfaction and frustration.  I’m hungry for more!

Watching Act III kind of ruined the series for me until the final song started. That song is perhaps the best song out of all three acts (And it only gets better when it shows the Evil League of Evil).

If we're hypothesizing about the characters motivations, though, I believe that Captain Hammer and Doctor Horrible are different sides of the same coin: Captain Hammer is a 'good' guy who really is evil (Or, at the very least, not as good as his position would normally demand) where as Dr. Horrible is an 'evil' character who really does good things (In Act I, you can see him attempting to stop the van even before it puts Penny in mortal danger.)

The only happy ending I know of Whedon using was the end of Serenity, and that only counts if you consider it a happy ending when one of the best characters dies. I don't think I would even consider it happy if it weren't for mal's speech at the end.

I would hate to play poker against Nathan Fillion, he could bluff having a hand better than a royal flush without his expression cracking.
