Atlanta, Georgia, USA 7-23-08, Variety Playhouse
It will be my third time seeing them in the past 11 years.
Requests I should yell? Pictures you want taken with my crappy phone camera? Questions I should ask Jason if I get to hang out with him like I did the first time I saw them?
Say hi if you're going. I'll be the guy with very short hair, prescription sunglasses, a Smiths shirt and camo army pants.

Q: Spacemen 3 reunion on VH1?
-
Hey, I'm going to the New York show on Sunday at Terminal 5 (I have yet to buy tickets, but the plan has been made).
First time though.
-
No, that's just how I roll.
My eyes are super light sensitive so even at night I prefer my tinted glasses to the non-tinted ones.
-
prescription sunglasses
Is the show outdoors?
He's gotta keep track of the visions in his eyes somehow, man.

I dont think Spacemen 3 are ever getting back together, which is already, I mean J. Spaceman peaked in Spiritualized. Im stoked that they are getting the indie band revitalization treatment that all these pre-Myspace bands, who come out with new stuff that rocks, gets.
Downside in this years Osheaga, a 2 day montreal music fest, Spiritualized is playing the day I am not going. Which sucks cause I liked them before I liked any of the bands I *am* going to see.

I'm going to see them in Denver.
People yelling requests is a pet peeve of mine. >_>

At least you're going. Pssh.

man, the more I hear about Montreal, the more I start to like the place.

Just dive balls first into this place. Or save up like $2000-3000 and move here for a summer. You can sublet a fully furnished place on the Plateau for around $400 /mo, if you get a job here you wont even really have to save all that much either. And french is an asset for getting a job, but totally unnecessary for day to day life.

So basically this show was fucking awesome. It was the most "rock" show I've seen him play. Off the top of my head, he did a bunch from the new one - "Sweet Talk", "Soul On Fire", "Sitting On Fire", "Baby I'm Just a Fool". Two from Amazing Grace - "She Kissed Me (and it Felt Like a Hit)" and "Rated X" (one of my favourite S songs ever). Nothing from Let It Come Down, which I found odd and kind of disappointing since I love that one. Blistering, insane versions of "Electricity" and "Come Together" from LAGWAFIS. And another of my favourite songs from Pure Phase, "Lay Back in the Sun".
Aside from that, he did "Shine a Light" (blissful), "Sound of Confusion" (I hope he doesn't play this every time because he thinks he has to, it's over 20 years old and speaking personally it's a good tune but I don't need to hear it at every show), and ended on another Spacemen 3 song, "Take Me to the Other Side", which was loud and raw and punishing.
The show was well attended and only a few jerks early on yelled things during the quiet parts, but for some reason it ended with J hitting the headstock on his amp, spilling water over his guitar and Marshall, then stabbing a hole in the amp with guitar, then throwing it at the drummer! No idea what was going on there, because as usual he didn't say a single word to the audience or acknowledge our existance at all.
No encore, but I've seen enough Brit bands to know that they just don't really do that.
No Spaceman shirts, which sucked, but I do like the new one, which I bought. It's just a white piill with "Spiritualized (R)" under it.

No Broken Heart? That sucks it was one of my favs even if its the saddest song this side of Styrofoam Plates by Death Cab.

Yeah I noticed those holes in his amp. No throwing shit at the drummer though.
The show was brilliant, I highly recommend going to anyone out there.
He did an encore tonight though. Probably because the crowd didn't piss off.

No Broken Heart?
As far as songs that are purely slow with no loud parts, I would have gone nuts if he had done "All of My Tears".
But I think that deliberately this was a "rock" tour, from what I've heard about shows in other cities. "Rated X" was the only song he did that didn't at some point explode into loud guitar squall.
I think the encore in New York was probably because it was New York. He's never done an encore according to everyone I've talked to that's seen him in dozens of cities over the years, not even in Toronto on the LAG tour where the place was packed with nothing but massive fans.
Honestly, I was pretty surprised that everyone I talked to at the show was a huge fan from way back (half the crowd was around my age or a little older or younger), especially in a venue in Little Five Points in Hotlanta which is a notoriously hipster douche part of a notoriously hipster douche town (not as bad as when I saw Mogwai in Athens though, where EVERY FUCKING ONE was talking EVEN DURING THE LOUD PARTS FOR FUCK'S SAKE).
-
Yeah, you're probably right.
The crowd here was older than me here. There were one or two kids, which I thought was amazing, but the majority were thirty some. Everyone was really into as well.
