Title: guess what
Post by: Ernest on 24 Jul 2008, 09:11
tomorrow I get on a plane and go to Chicago.  I will be staying with my good friend who is house-sitting.  the people who own the house left us much food and beer.  then on Saturday we will make our way to Wicker Park for Wicker Park Fest.  guess who plays on Saturday: Polvo! Polvo! Polvo!!!  and Joan of Arc! and Joan of Arc!

oh man the fun will be there

I will be down there.  One of my bands is doing an acoustic set at American Apparel on Saturday afternoon and then playing Wicker Park fest on Sunday.

Joan of Arc should be awesome.  I am looking forward to seeing Maps and Atlases.  I think they have finally found a way to blend all of the technical playing with good songwriting and melody.  For a while it was just annoying tapping and guitar wankery.  The new record seems pretty solid.

They have shows at American Apparel?

Maybe Dov Charney will come. He could dance on the stage and then at the end he could wipe his sweaty balls on a female employee's face.

Gross but hilarious.  That dude is creeeeeeepy.

The female employee will be wearing a skintight gold lamé jumpsuit.

Oh God Tommy, that's so terrible. Half the time when I come across an AA ad I have to remind myself that it's an actual advertisement and not just softcore porn.

Also, I would give my ten nuts to see Polvo live.

I wish I could say I had to hunt for that but it's literally the first result on Google Image Search.

And this is like the fifth!

Goddamnit why do I have to be working tomorrow? I got invited to this by someone and everything! Bluuuch. The second day is much less intriguing for me.

If I was rich I would just hang out in a pair of Y-fronts all day too.

guys you didn't miss much

Joan of Arc was all kinds of boring and Polvo only got to play for about 45 minutes (Chicago curfew).  They also didn't play Tragic Carpet Ride.  I don't like their new drummer; he puts too many unnecessary fills in (he tried his level best to ruin Bombs that Fall From Your Eyes).  They've also changed a lot in their songs, adding harder rocking parts where there were quiet, tasteful breaks before.  Their new songs were pretty good, though.  They also cut Lazy Comet short, though.  I talked to Ash Bowie after the show, and he said that Dave likes to play the song that way, and that he himself prefers the old version.  Ash also has problems with tendonitis, and he told me about also his various acupuncture and acu-otherstuff treatments that he has to undergo in order to play shows.  However, he assured me that Polvo will indeed tour the southern United States, so I can see them at a better, longer show, which I hope to do.

Tommy, they did play Every Holy Shroud, if that makes you happy

I was obtusely poking fun at the notion of being excited to see a band play really old songs.

I thought you making fun of me for liking Polvo because of how well-known they are (not that well-known).  Like they weren't obscure enough or something.  That would have been hilarious.  Raising the level of discourse and all

Nevermind the fact that they are apparently playing some new material at these shows.

The songs aren't that old to someone who was like 8 when Polvo broke up. I doubt he was a fan of Polvo in the 90s. That would be pretty cool though. My friend's first concert was Sonic Youth when he was 10. I wish I could say that.

Well I was 6 years from being born when Let It Bleed came out and I still wouldn't bother going to a Rolling Stones concert, even if they were going to play that album in its entirety.

I didn't really like Pixies until the mid-90s and I had zero interest in the reunion tour.

But, whatever flips your quarter.

But it doesn't matter if they play good music, I mean they're old and fat now. How could anyone possibly enjoy that?

[/sarcasm]

They came through Texas so many times, I'm sad I missed them.

I don't care if people are old and/or fat.  I just saw Spiritualized last week and J Spaceman is older than the people in Polvo, but I was super excited to see the show because I've enjoyed the new material he has consistently put out in recent years.

Likewise I would have loved to have seen Bowie on the Outside tour.

I guess I'm just saying I go to shows because I enjoy hearing recent music played live, not classics.  As stated in my post about the show, I really had no interest in seeing J play "Sound of Confusion".

Last night I went to Judas Priest and the best moments of the night involved them playing "Hell-Bent For Leather," "Electric Eye," "You Got Another Thing Coming," "Painkiller" and "Breaking The Law." I went mostly to hear those songs and everything else they played was a bonus.

It's no crime to have favourite songs from earlier in a band's catalogue, and frankly sometimes new material outright sucks. If I went to a Stills show tomorrow night, I'd personally sacrifice a lamb to God beforehand to ensure that they wouldn't play anything off their new record.

The Sun City Girls show you went to was entirely "old" material but you still went, right?

That's different and you know it.  Half that show was a film tribute to Charles Gocher and the other half were not "classics" except to a very small cult of people who know the band.  Also, at least half the songs they played were things I had never heard before; it is not remotely the same thing as going to see the Pixies so you can sing along to every song.

Also, why the fuck are you being such a dick to me again tommy.   :x
