Indie is that music which is made by Indian elephants, as the name clearly shows.

Ouch! That must be a seriously miserable existence.

On a serious note, the word "indie" is basically an abbreviation for "independent". Therefore, any band on an independent (read: non major) label is "indie".

As far as genres go it's an extremely nebulous term; I'd basically say it means rock and/or pop with some slightly experimental overtones and/or left field or obscure influences. Uh, I hope that kind of answered your question. Check littlekey's rec thread for bands.

Indie is that special place you arrive at when you blend the perfect amount of foreign spices with a greasy pizza. And then it tastes gross but you pretend to like it anyway because it's trendy.

Indie is a man, with a camera, filming himself naked and realizing that he is the most attractive example of his species.

Indie is when you're picking your nose and realize that it isn't all that gross after all, as long as you wash your hands long and hard afterward.

Indie is being able to make confusing and often deliberately idiotic metaphors at the snap of a hat, then receding back into the depths of the Computer forum.

Actually, it's Thai elephants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Elephant_Orchestra).

this would seem to be the wrong place to ask that question...

i think 'indie' today defines a scene more than a sound.  it'd be fruitless to try and explore the genre the way you'd explore a more conventional genre like jazz or punk... really, just listen to what you like.

i can't detect any irony in your post, so you must be serious...

though i suppose this just reinforces my point in my above post.  the bands listed here are all considered very indie, "hip" bands, but without knowing that prior to listening, i can't imagine hearing these groups and associating them with one another.

I think the point is that these are relatively accesible bands to listen to, which can lead to better, stronger drugs.... er, bands.

If indie music were drugs, Animal Collective would be some kind of suppository meth.

In that case, Super Furry Animals would be ecstacy.

list some of your fav artists? the term indie is used way too often and imo is used more like it's a definition of a type of sound now..it's kind of lost its meaning

I SUPPOSE IT'S TIME TO POST THIS AGAIN. (http://www.melancholyrhino.com/so.html)

'Indie rock' was never a genre and its bastardisation as an aesthetic category was one of countless elegant corporate-intellectual coups during the 1990s.

If you listen to "all" types of music, then I don't see how indie should be any different to what you're already listening to other than the fact that the bands probably aren't on major labels. Indie is not a genre until attached to something else, it just implies that the band is part of an independent record label. I can't really recommend bands, considering I don't really know what your actual tastes are and I'm pretty sure there are people on this board that know a whole lot more about indie music than I do. I mean, I had to subscribe to a magazine (http://www.pastemagazine.com/) to find out more about it. I tried reading Pitchfork, but I thought most of the people they talked about were boring. (This was like 3-4 years ago and I haven't gone back since.)

But yeah. TL:DR, post some bands/artists you listen to, because I have no idea what you like.
Title: Re: Suggest Indie Artists,please.
Post by: ThisIsOriginal on 28 Jul 2008, 13:24
well I guess more of it was I didn't fully understand what the word "indie" was supposed to be associated with, that and I was really just looking for rocl/alternitive bands I hadn't heard of.

and I have no full-on-nothing-but-music stores near me so I wouldn't know of "new up and coming" or "independent" or "underground" bands.

And/or Jawbreaker/Jets to Brazil. I seem to remember a time when "Ted Leo and Jets to Brazil" was the standard answer to this sort of thread. It should still hold true.

I don't really know or care if it's true, but the article was suggesting that Nirvana's popularity ushered in the widespread use of the term "indie" not that they were the start of indie music.

Sorry dude, I got sidetracked.

Indie is a very nebulous word that honestly describes an attitude more than anything else, though there is a narrow strain of music associated directly with the term. What kind of bands do you listen to already? We can give you some direct recommendations and teach you how to fish, as it were.

I don't really understand what you are getting at. Quoting things in giant letters is kind of an ambiguous way to communicate your thoughts. Are you saying an article written by a person who can't even bother to spellcheck the names of albums is not a very reputable source of information? If so, I agree.

I'm not sure if I am being presumptuous in thinking your post was a retort to what I had posted. I was just trying to clarify things because it seemed like you misread the article. Maybe I think I am taking the internet too seriously.

Yeah, michaelicious, you've never seen somebody do that before? Thats quite a common way to point out somebody's hilarious mistake around here.

Also, as everyone here has said, indie isn't a genre. Blah blah blah. You get the point kid. Just listen to Ted Leo or whatever the cool kids like nowadays.

Yeah, Jets To Brazil and Jawbreaker will be right up your alley, I think.

Try some other bands on the Touch & Go label, and it can't hurt to give Titus Andronicus a listen.

Be snarky all you want, the article is still correct.  I was there and I saw it; the term "indie" started to get widestream usage after Nevermind.  Calling out the writer of that article for a minor mistake is pointless.

The guy who first mentioned Broken Social Scene was spot on target, they are an amazing band. Try checking out Wolf Parade, Beirut, The Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Panda Bear, Sonic Youth, The Books.

As to what Indie is, what does it matter? Just enjoy the music.

OP: this is what you should really take to heart here, and why people have been giving you a hard time.
That's why I was careful to say on my post that I "subjectively" classify my picks as "indie," but really you could easily break my list into several categories...
For instance, Broken Social Scene can be called Post Rock, and Cryptacize can be called Folk.
Much like "Classic Rock" can stretch from Bob Dylan to AC/DC (Hell, I've heard people refer to Metallica as classic rock), is "Indie" has it's own entire subset of genres, so what you'll have to do in the end is find what you like and just enjoy it.

Anything from the Elephant 6 collective (Neutral Milk Hotel being probably the most famous and also including Olivia Tremor Control, Apples in Stereo, Beulah, etc etc etc) is a good indie crash course.

Interesting.  At the time that stuff was initially being made, most people I knew considered OTC to be the "flagship band" and generally the best, with NMH being the second fiddle.
