Title: Strangest Concert experience
Post by: Uhasan on 11 Aug 2008, 15:59
I was jsut wondering what was the strangest concert experiance that any of you hav ever had. For me, I was at a lupe fiasco concert, I was standing at an elevated postion to the side close to the exits, but still fairly close to the stage. Anyway on the last song I see someone collapse about ten rows of people in, and my first thought was..."one too many,", but it turns out she was having a seizure. The last song did have a lot of bright lights going on and off so maybe thats what caused it. The people around her called security and they had to carry her out of there while she was convulsing. As they're leaving someone calls out, "get her a banana"...I have no idea why that would help, potassium maybe? Anyway, I was not expecitng that at a concert, or anywhere I guess. Any body else got some interesting concert stories?

I had to modify that title because it was driving me nuts. -JC

Haha Johnny C, you blinked first! - Inlander

One of my more recent, out of the ordinary experiences was at the Gogol Bordello concert I was at last week.  I guess Elijah Wood was there in the VIP booth.  I didn't see him, but my friends did.

It's not quite intresting, but you might think it funny:
once i was at a single file concert (local denver band) in a very small venue and i got stuck behind this tall and fat guy.
A 'mosh pit' started and the guy fucking fell on me. keep in mind that he was fat and i weigh a total of 130 pounds :x.

My first is the Stone Temple Pilots show at PNC Bank Arts Center in Jersey in May.  Ashes Divide opened, soon after Filter played.  Filter finished up their set by 9:00, 9:15 maybe.  We're waiting and waiting and waiting and wait and fuck, where the hell is the band?  Everyone was pissed.  Some people left, most were yelling and chanting things like "Asshole" and "Bullshit".  No lie, it was pretty cool, but by 10:50 and STP still wasn't even heard from i thought a riot was gonna break out.  And i had lawn seats, so there were tons of people in every direction to the left, right, and behind of me.  They finally got on stage and played for a measly hour.  The band kicked ass to say the least, Scott Weiland was definitely passed out due to drugs for those two hours though, and sounded sort of shitty.  Still a great show though.

My second experience was from seeing Bruce Springsteen & the E Street band two weeks ago at Giants Stadium.  I was four feet from the stage, it was completely mind blowing.  There were at least four famous people standing in the crowd near me, plus i high-fived Bruce when he came on the wing next to me.

At a single file concert I would call that a near death experiance, howd you get outta that, I cant imagine it was easy for him to get up in a crowded environment.

An audience member passes George Clinton a bowl, he lights it up and smokes a little, hands it back to the guy, guy is thrown out by security, show continues.

Also, as everyone is leaving a Who concert, a guy is all excited and takin' high fives from everybody who walks by him and I don't give him one and he gets SO mad.

That's because Elijah Wood is dating one of the members of the band.  He was at their show at Toad's Place too, in the band room.  I only saw him cause I was working security that night.  (On a side note, I'm glad they moved me from the fence separating 21+ and the underage people.  It collapsed five minutes into the show.)

Another Tidbit about elijah/Gogol Bordello, the lead singer, Eugene Hutz, starred in Everything Is Illuminated alongside Elijah. Gogol Bordello also did some songs for the soundtrack. Just so you know :)

At the Flaming Lips show in Nashville in early 2001, my girlfriend and others were sitting at a table right up near the stage, slightly to the left.  Anyway, next to us there was a very drunken 50-60 year old redneck who, halfway through, started yelling "SUPERMAN!!!!!" between every song.

When they finally played "Waiting For Superman", he sang along to every lyric.

Okay...

Weirdest experience that I've played myself. That'd be my metal band's first gig. We were short of material so we did a 15-minute improvised piece called 'Nuclear Winter.' I have some back issues and didn't want to be in pain during the gig so I was... well, frankly, loaded up on painkillers. In the course of that 15 minutes, I lay down onstage for a minute and a half, kicked my bass, stood on it, played it with a slide, and at one point twatted it repeatedly with a penny whistle. I think the only reason we didn't get bottled offstage was because we were fifth band on and alcohol wasn't allowed in that part of the bar.

Weirdest experience AT a gig... two unbelievably hot girls sat next to me at the Ryan Adams concert. I was flirting with both of them and dare I say it, doing a pretty damn good job. The gig started, and there was a nice moment when a light had reflected Ryan's shadow so perfectly on the opposite wall that you could see his lips moving behind the microphone and I pointed it out to one of them. It was nice. We'd talked about our favourite songs before the gig so we kinda nudged each other when he played some fo them. Then about an hour and a half in, they asked me to look after their bags, and then... disappeared. For an hour. When they re-appeared, they were with a stern-looking security man. One of them came and grabbed their stuff, the other one gave me a sad goodbye and they left. At that moment, I had to sit and decide between Ryan's encore and going after them. I picked the encore. And I regret it, because he played a song I didn't fucking know and it still drives me crazy that I'll never see either of those fucking beautiful girls again and I don't even know what happened that meant they had to get kicked out. They were into me and everything!

They were clearly raping a 70 yr old man.

Actually, that sounds a lot like they were trying to get back stage somehow, more than anything.

I was at a Buck 65 show, and he was doing his banter thing between songs, and he pulls out a pack of mentos (the fruit kind) and says "who likes Mentos?" and I of course yell "I DOOOOOOO". Buck seemed a little taken aback by my enthusiasm. He explained that in addition to a bottle of water, the venue had provided the pack of mentos as complimentary thanks for his patronage, but he was not a fan of mentos. He then cocked his arm, mentos in hand, and said "are you ready?" and I yelled "yaaaaaah" and he threw it, and despite my best efforts to catch the package in the dim light it *whoooooosh*ed right past my head, and I remember that Buck used to be a shortstop, and a good one. The crowd let out a collective cry of disappointment, and the show continued. A few minutes later I am nudged from behind and turn around to see a girl with the mentos and hand, and we split it. I bought here a coke. It was a good night.

Pretty much the whole Lips concert I went to here in OKC was like that... since they were doing the live CD that night, all the weirdos came out, trying to get noticed. Fun stuff though.

If you are making fun of why I was not with them when they left it was because I wanted to finish the concert and they were going home... would not have scored on either one with their parents home.

A friend and I went to a concert at one of those pavillion/indoor/outdoor places.  We sat under the roof, but it was all open air and people were smoking both tobacco and non-tobacco pretty openly.  As we're sitting down, I hear my friend say "Hey, how ya doing?" to the people on the other side of him.  It's our junior high band director and her husband!

Once the show started, people were passing around the non-tobacco, including these two guys next to me.  They passed it over a few times, and I partook.  I gestured, indicating that I wanted to pass it on down, and they nodded, but my friend was all paranoid because he's sitting next to our junior high band director.  He waved me off and gave me a look of disapproval.  I didn't care; I got pretty fried.  Hell, if he'd hit it and passed it, I bet she would've hit it too.  That would be a great story, but I'll have to settle for strange.

So I'm at a Hold Steady concert in Madison, in a pretty intimate side-entrance setting, only about 100 people or so, and a very drunk student of the nearby UW started shouting, between every song, demanding that The Hold Steady play various songs by Bruce Springsteen. And he wasn't just being a heckler. He turns to me after the third song or so and, completely seriously, exclaims "I don't get it! Why won't they play anything by The Boss!? This is lame! This is like fuckin'..Barry Manilow!"

Later, he asks me "HEY MAN, You like to party hardy?"

Before I could answer, he turns to my girlfriend and goes "I bet she likes to party hardy! ALRIGHT! WOO!" and gives her a high-five.

During a raging keytar solo, one of the members of Awesome Car Fun Maker jumped off stage into the audience, where he proceeded to do his keytar solo...  while doing the curly shuffle, laying on the ground running in circles.

He then bit my friend's ankle (jokingly, no blood or anything.)

Unless they lied to me - which is admittedly possible - they were at university, meaning they were at least 18. And the venue had a bar on every floor. So meh, maybe it was drugs.

Anyway, the point is, speculation doesn't mean that I'll ever know. I'm just annoyed I didn't go after them.

About 8 years ago, I was aged 11, I went to this festival somewhere in wales that my parents really wanted to go to. However I was a stupid 11 year old kid who wanted to read Harry Potter and pretend everyone hated me. However, they dragged me kicking and screaming to see this really really good reggae band in a tent. I went right up to the front, and eventually this nice bloke sat me on the stage, overlooking the crowd, which was awesome in and of itself. Then, even better, one of the band came up to me and gave me a tambourine and pulled me on stage proper, and started showing me how to use it. I gotta say, I was inches away from pissing myself, standing in front of a 1000 strong crowd not knowing what the hell to do. After the gig, the band invited me backstage and it's one of the biggest regrets I have that I didn't accept that offer.

Some of the wierdest-

At Krazyfest about eight years with Dillinger Escape Plan ending the first night of the festival.  The whole band Hod Rot Circuit stripped down naked and stage dove into a bunch of horrified kids moshing and were followed by a guy who blew fire over the crowd before also jumping into the crowd, all of whom were followed by security who also dove into the crowd in an effort to to stop the streaking musicians and pyro.

I played in a metal band about 10 years ago that a show with a good pit going.  All of a sudden it split to reveal two scrawny guys purposely punchng each other in the face until there was blood eveywhere.  When the song stopped they both had broken noses and were laughing and hugging each other.  It was pretty disconcerting.  (One of them later became our fill in vocalist).

Well I guess we can consider Blue Man Group a concert for a second. So I was in Chicago seeing Blue Man Group near the very front of the stage. It was quite cool. Fun show. Wacky antics and what not. I had purchased a hoodie and decided to put it on. I heard a strange clicking noise and kept walking until I noticed my eye sight was rather strange. I then came to the conclusion a lens fell out of my glass. So here we have a sixteen-year-old frantically searching around for a glass lens through a bunch of paper that came into use during the show. I told a chaperone (it was a school trip) who of course told the people there. They said they'd try and find it. I never heard news of it again, but I can imagine the curiosity of one of the clean-up crew when they found it.

Not a very good story but whatever.

Strangest concert experience?  I don't really have one.  But the most infuriating one was when I saw Reel Big Fish and the Aggrolites.  During both bands the "hardxcore one man moshpit" decided to ruin our skanking circle every chance he got.  Then during Reel Big Fish he got other people to follow his lead and turned our skanking circle into a shitty pit. And I mean a terrible pit, especially since Charged G.B.H. had just played and that was an awesome circle pit.

Warped Tour 2006. My friend and I were pretty much the only people watching Vaux play. The singer kept making jokes about my shirt, which he thought had a My Little Pony on it, even though I pointed it out about 20 times that it was a unicorn.

Afterwards we hung out at their merch tent, they gave us Red Bull, and he finally admitted that it was indeed a unicorn.

One of my housemates in michigan was friends with a local band named Your Best Friend. We found out they were doing an east coast swing so we drove down to Myrtle Beach, SC to watch them play.

They played at a fairly small bar venue which could have fit 300 if we were packed in. A grand total of 8 people showed up to watch them play. There was 4 of us that came together, 3 whacked out hick locals that were stomping around and thrashing, and one drugged up weirdo whorebag.

The whole concert the three locals just danced and stomped and hollered around the stage. The one whorebag kept coming in and out of the venue every few minutes, she would stop in front of the stage and kick and fight the locals, and bite the band. She ended up offering the merchandise roadie a blowjob and some pills in exchange for a cd. Luckily he declined both.

Then, after the show ended, things got super weird.

While standing around packing the band's van we witnessed:
1. one of the 3 locals (aged mid to late 20s) getting a blowjob from a 50 year old woman behind the band's van. The icing on this one was that this lady's 30 year old daughter was watching them and saying "Give her a break, she's on vacation!"
2. drugged up weirdo whorebag starts making out with local that just finished getting a blowjob and ends up flashing him. this makes some woman inside the bar mad and the two of them start fighting.

Weird night.

Oh, another thing, I was at a Nine Inch Nails concert several years ago, and we got seats right under one of those penthouse boxes they have at stadiums. I look back towards the end of the show and the only people in the box were a couple who looked to be in their 70s, and they seemed to be having more fun than anyone else I saw, certainly more fun than I was having. They were dancing and singing the lyrics to all the songs and everything. I'd say that was more awesome than strange, though.

I once was at a gig of my brother's ex band, it was rather small, the people who were there basically were all just friends of the band members and the other bands playing. So there are about 30 people standing around, mostly young (15-16) year olds who dress in a bit too tight clothes with too much black, etc. My brother's band starts playing and it's surf rock, and you can see that everyone is digging it, even the people who were there for the other bands, which is pretty cool for my brother and his friends, so I'm feeling proud, and then suddenly a member of the audience, drops to the ground, starts to flip out, people around him completely ignore him, jump over him, and I'm thinking 'what the hell is going on? this kid is having a seizure! Why is no one helping him?' So I start to move through the crowd towards him, and the song ends, he stands up and starts dancing to the next song.

Weird.

Frank Zappa at the Masonic Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan.  This was before you were born.

The band of course is phenomenal.  They're playing some ridiculous jam in 13/8 and are tight as hell, when some asshole throws a bottle onstage.  With a wave of his hand, Frank stops the band dead cold and politely calls for the house lights please.  House lights come up to reveal the asshole getting pounded on by other fans, but Frank asks if he could please have Security escort the guy out.  They do, as much for his own protection as anything else.  Frank then proceeds to lecture us about proper concert behavior.  We can sing, clap, yell, dance if we want, but under no circumstances should we throw bottles onstage or any other shit.  He talks about how incredibly beautiful this venue is - and indeed it was - and how special it is to even have a rock concert there, but some asshole always has to spoil it.  He's making so much sense that we all just sat there in silence, and dammit, he's right.  The Masonic Theater has carpeted walls, huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and is just fucking gorgeous.

Then he turns around and yells "Two! Three! ..." and BANG! the band picks up immediately where they left off, in this amazingly intricate jam.  Frank's control over his bands was legendary, and now I've seen it first hand, though not in the most positive circumstances.

When the last song finished, the house lights came up within two seconds.  The message was clear: Show is over, this audience does NOT get any encores.  Shit.  Some asshole ruined it for everyone.

Sad thing is that nobody really knows about Zappa anymore. I'm 17, and I think all of 2 people in my highschool including myself even have a song of his on our mp3 players.

Wierdest concert moment? A cop started beating the crap out of a girl in a mosh pit for no reason. Just chocking the shit out of her and hauled her out of the venue. It was in a school auditorium so he was security and he booted her. The Bassist dropped his instrment and jumped into the crowd to try and calm the cop down.

I was at the Air Canada Centre, waiting for the doors to open for a show, when I met one of the promoters (he called himself Salad). We talked a bit, and long story short I ended up on one of the tour buses, with 2 of the bands watching, as I was about to get my nose pierced with a safety pin. Salad thought this was awesome and well, being 15 and hanging out with some really cool famous guys, I thought it was awesome too!

However, one of the managers burst in, saying "What the hell am I hearing about someone getting their face mutilated?" Anyway, he decided it was stupid and they didn't have consent from my parents (my being under the age of majority) and there could be a lawsuit if it got infected and whatnot. My friend and I did get to hang out backstage though!

Also, I blame parents for kids not knowing about Zappa. It's despicable.

Last night, some friends and I attended a local charity gig with four or more bands playing. I don't know. I left during the fourth.

The first band was this doom metal outfit with super-low tuning, super-loud amps and a really tribal, stoner vibe. They were really rockin', I thought. The second band was a band from my school, who were good at what they did. What they did, however, was bland guitar-pop.

The third band took the cake. The Choice Cuts, I think they were called. Every member of the band, including the drummer, had this amazingly relaxed, yet intense stage presence that made the whole gig so much better. The drummer, for instance, was almost constantly wearing an expression of blistering despair during the fast parts of songs. The bass player and guitarist traded off unkind words rather frequently to humorous effect. There was even a hard-rock cover of Johnny B. Goode.
That's not even the best bit, though. Three awesome things that happened were:

- The guitarist walking into the crowd and playing right in front of me as I mimic'd his playing on my air-guitar.

- My best friend having a flirt-off with the guitarist/singer during a song about picking up chicks. Both are guys.

- Getting a bit of a mosh going during one song. Nothing violent, just a fair bit of shoving and good fun. This is notable because the majority of the audience were stuck on their feet. I may have looked like a dickhead, but I was the only one constantly moving, headbanging and generally ROKKING THE FUKK OUT. And the band appreciated it.

The guy's guitar playing is actually very notable. Very, very smooth and natural, with a fill style like Hendrix. Actually, the whole band reminded me of the Jimi Hendrix experience with a bit more energy and a punkier vibe. Really, really great. Inspiring, too, seeing a guitarist no older than myself playing to a level beyond professional with ease and finesse.

If you want a strange performance, go to a Deerhunter show. That guy, Brandon Cox, is fucking bizarre and terrifying, especially when, in a sequined butterfly dress that doesn't really cover his balls, he drops to the floor whilst fellating his microphone and screaming into it, crawls over to one of the guitarists, wraps his arms around the guys knees, and proceeds to slam the mic into the guitar strings while the guitarist, partially turned away from the audience, remains stone cold stoic. And that was only about 30 seconds of the whole set, none of which was any more normal. Yeah, it really is that awesome.

Also, I once saw a band where a guy turned over a large hand drum, picked up a cello, flipped it upside down, stuck the neck of the cello into the body of the drum, and proceeded to bang and strum the cello strings with a conch shell.

Did that actually make a noise worthy of the effort, or was he just being pretentious?

I don't know that mine are necessarily weird, but I think they are interesting...  anyway

My second concert ever, Metallica when I was sixteen, it was an open air place, stage is under an awning, lots of seats, and behind the seats is the lawn, anyway, I was in the seats.  I got up to go get a water or something, and while I am heading over, there's a dude yelling at one of the security guys.  I stand back, as there are other security guards moving towards the guy, and, I wanna see what happens.  Anyway, the (obviously) drunk dude, just hauls off and punches one of the security guards.  People had already backed up away from him, and the next thing I saw is a different security guards vault the fence and flying tackle the dude.  It took four big ass guards to drag his ass out, which, in retrospect, means he was probably a bit more than just liquored up.

More recently, I saw something similar, at a GWAR concert in Washington DC, and I don't know what happened prior, but this chick was being thrown out, and while the security dude is walking behind her, she turns around and fucking decks him.  Again, not the best thing in that type of situation, as that quickly brings other security guards to the spot, who are surprisingly gentle with her, and basically hold her put with her arms at her sides right in place, facing away from the stage until the cops show up like 5 or so minutes later.

The Zappa story reminded me of something a friend related to me recently (She works as a local stagehand / lighting tech / etc), and for the life of me, I cannot remember what band it was, someone with an expensive upright bass IIRC.  Someone threw a half-full beer up on stage, which splashed all over the expensive instrument.  The band quickly stopped, and brought up the house lights.  The singer asked the crowd "Who threw that?"  and apparently some drunk guy took total credit, jumping up and down and such.  Guess where he went shortly thereafter?

The weirder things I see are going to things like Ozzfest, and seeing girls walk around in teeny tiny bikinis.... who shouldn't be.  Why is it all the cute girls at metal shows are the ones in like, a long skirt and loose t-shirt, but the ugly, lumpy, missing half their teeth 40 year olds are the ones who walk around damn near naked attempting to make my eyes bleed out?

Which is why I hate metal shows and Renaissance fairs.

Pretty much the latter.

Back when Megadeth came to my town they played in a big seated venue and the floor seats were sold out. Me and a friend of mine snuck down and made friends with some douche bags who decided to hop the fence and take their chances with security to get on the floor (that's not why they were douchebags we measured their douchebaggery by other standards.) Anyway they jump security bolts after them leaving the fence unattended. me and my friend just walk in unobstructed and later see the other guys being carried out by security.

I was at the Download Festival in Los Angeles, which was strange on it's own because the place was a fucking ghost town the whole show. The festival lasted like 9 hours...

Anyways, The Gibson Amphitheater sits right behind Universal Citywalk.
I work at citywalk.

So, I had explored around the venue on my breaks when there was literally nobody there.
Anyways, after the show, I walk out of the venue and come back to the backlot as an employee.
It will be a little difficult to explain the specifics, but I walked down to the artists entrance, and nobody was guarding it.

I walk in and find that The Jesus and Mary Chain are having a party in the room.
I usually would have said hey or something, but between being pretty fucking tired from 9 hours of festival and the fact that I was totally taken aback by the whole thing, I didn't.

I really wish I had done something though, because no matter what might have happened, the story would have been FANTASTIC.

although.. knowing that I could have hung out with The JAMC is still pretty fuckin' cool.

Stories remind me of other stories...

My girlfriend and I and another couple went to this big open-air festival in Grand Haven, Michigan in a big field mostly surrounded by sand dunes and trees.  I've been going to Grand Haven since I was eight years old, long before it became the obscene tourist trap that it is today, and looking at a map of the place, we realize that traffic and parking will be nothing less than 100% Hell for everybody if we follow the directions.  On the other hand, this empty area *here* is a cemetary (it's not marked on the map) and it's like two blocks the other side.  So we drive around to the cemetary, park the car under some trees, and walk a few blocks carrying the cooler.  We come down into the place from out of the hills where they obviously never thought anyone would come, because all the security and tickets and concessions are way on the other side, all set up with temporary fencing.

We find a nice spot, and spread our blanket.  The music was great, much fun was had, and it occurred to me later that not only did we totally bypass security and ticket people, but anyone else could have done the same thing.  But whatever.  We'd only paid like $13 for each ticket, and now we have un-ripped tickets as souveniers.

I wouldn't say these were particulary strange expereinces but they made me smile. At an Iron Maiden gig, I was talking to this 10-year old who had come with his dad. He stopped talked to me then leapt into a mosh pit. I think he lived.

I just have this funny scene playing in my head based on your experience.

That, I don't mind.

That, I do. Not that I have much experience, as whenever a band I want to see comes near, I am either out of money or can't get there.
