Title: Free music...
Post by: Nekkoru on 11 Sep 2008, 14:31
As in, albums you can legally download, be it from torrents or the band's website. Any recommendations?

By the way - Radiohead initially released In Rainbows as a "free" CD - is it still legal to get a free copy?

Metallica released their new album for free, but I don't know if you can download it.

I remember a thread about this back in July, but it didn't catch on. If you're interested in that, it's here (http://"http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,20279.0.html").

You linked the last thread badly. This (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,20279.0.html) should work.

As I stated in the last thread, The Pax Cecilia is fucking awesome. If you want more information, I suggest you click the link above.

There's a member on here, TheoristB, his band released their second EP for free on their website.  Although, I think that was supposed to end sometime, I'm not sure if you can still get it.  Do a Google search for Inspector Owl and you might find it.

Also, a local band called The Year's Best released their most recent EP on their Myspace for free.  I don't know if you dig alternative-type stuff, so either of these suggestions may not be what you're looking for.

I don't think this is right.  They have a download but you have to pay for it.

The newest Nine Inch Nails album (http://theslip.nin.com/), on the other hand, is a free legal download for all time.

Machinae Supremacy (http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/masusite/ugmusic.html) is a kick ass band that has a nice amount of free tracks. In fact, some of their best tracks ("Cryosleep," "Origin," "Soundtrack to the Rebellion," "Attack Music," "March of the Undead (pt III)," "Missing Link") are available for free download.

Basically, you can listen to it to your heart's content but buy it so you can scrobble it.

www.jamendo.com has tons and tons of free music, either for download or to stream. The quality is a bit uneven, naturally, but there is good stuff to be found.

Some of the stuff on there is amazing, I highly recommend the N.O.H.A album in the Drum 'n Bass section, and the Jahcoozi album "Blitz n Ass" in Hip-Hop.

grooveshark.com <- Listen all you want for free

I find the autoplay feature to be crap (but if you want that go to pandora.com), but besides that it's decent. It's not exactly free to download, but you can listen to your heart's content for free, to a good deal of songs, and since they're also uploaded by others, you can see a lot of 'rare' stuff there sometimes.

http://www.yukiyaki.org/ - there are a few netlabels like this one putting music out for free. I guess the quality of music is compromised, since they could probably get signed to a bigger label with more talent, but there is some genuinely good stuff here. Daniel Carew's album is quite good, especially Zen Timer.

Free rap! Scroll down for album.

Netlabel with great music from Melbourne. Talkshow Boy is brilliant, glitchy, chopped beat pop. The others are kinda odd instrumental artists.

Last time I checked, they were doing that pay-what-you-want thing.

Oh, I forgot this one. Buttonhead have made themselves one of my favourite bands with this free demo EP. It is utterly fantastic, and the sound quality is great. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Really! Do it!

Reznor actively encourages people to pirate his music so that his label doesn't get any money.

I got the inspector owl download, and loved it. Is The Year's Best similar to them? and how do i get that EP?
