oh christ Sid Meier fuck you for creating digital crack
*twitches*
*picks up DS*

I saw the console one and thought "Meh" but a DS version may very well be worth my money. Of course, I thought that back when they released Heroes of Might and Magic for gameboy color and was terribly wrong.
-
I haven't played any of the console versions, but supposedly the gameplay on the DS is EXACTLY the same, and in fact the interface is even easier to use because of the touch-screen.
Sure, it's a weird kind of Civ Lite but it also has a lot of cool features that aren't in the main series. The emphasis is on actually doing shit (war, trading, tech) than micro-managing your cities (OH FUCK THEY'RE RIOTING AGAIN???? JESUS YOU TWATS ARE PICKY).
-
that was always my problem with the civ games, the minute I actually tried to do something my cities would always be like "What? no attention to us for five seconds? RIOTTTTTTT!!!!!"
-
One of the best features is that if your civilization is, well, civilized enough, enemy cities will actually just up and decide to join your empire, even if you haven't discovered where they are yet.
Also I think, but am not sure, that the same thing will also happen if they're afraid of you.
It's a bit too easy on the lower difficulty settings because of the way you can make "armies" out of units, and those armies gain "experience" and eventually "level up" to become ridiculously overpowered. The last game I played to completion, I destroyed everything in my path with a single army (unit) of Knights that had something like 30 victories, which causes them to get around +200% attack, another +100 against cities, +50 for having a "general" with them (a non-controllable "unit" that appears with the army when they've won enough battles), +1 movement, +1 movement after attack, healing after attacking, etc etc etc.

Language filters make Jackie's serious posts on Civilization hilarious.
-
You know, I am not even going to edit that, because it is making me lol.
-
Imagist, the cubone is hilarious. I also forget what words are filtered into what.
-
Plus 1 is rendered "I have nothing of value to add".
It's a stupid filter that needs to go since I really don't think that these forums would be overrun by "plus 1" posts.

I've owned this game for 360 since it came out.
I played it for the first time tonight.
Jesus fucking hell it's fun.
-
Yeah, the DS version is exactly the same as the 360/PS3 version; I've got them both - AIUI, the actual engine is running identical code behind the scenes, just recompiled for the DS and with less pretty graphics. I had my initial reservations about the interface on the DS version - it seems a bit clunky, especially the tech planner, and I'd really like a way to get a quick overview of the map and what's going on (is there a "zoom out"? Maybe I should read the manual). But there's nothing game-spoiling in there and, as Jackie says, it's Civ except without all the silly micromanagement stuff that made the PC version go on for days. It just lets you get on with ruling the world.
In short, it is awesome and you should definitely buy it.
