For purposes of this post, "childhood" means age 13 or younger. I'm not talking about "kiddie" songs either.
I grew up in the 80s, so...
Cyndi Lauper - She Bop (1984). I was five years old. This is the first "favorite" song I can remember having. Of course, at the age of five, I didn't know what it was actually about...
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing (1984). Or, as I called it, "the MTV song." Every time the video came on TV I would not move until it was over. The video got me interested in computer animation, as well.
A-Ha - Take On Me (1985). Another song I like because of the video, which is my favorite of all time.
Tears for Fears - Shout (1985). Tears for Fears was, mysteriously, my favorite band when I was six.
The Pretenders - Brass in Pocket (1979). Although I didn't hear (or pay attention to) this song until I was seven. I've been a Pretenders fan since then. I remember my mom playing her Get Close tape in the car when I was eight, and then when I was thirteen and finally had my own radio/tape player, stealing that tape to listen to.
The B-52s - Love Shack (1989). Yes, I know it was fucking everywhere, but I loved it when I was ten and I think I still love it.
REM - Losing My Religion (1991). Saw the video when I was eleven or twelve years old and the song blew me away. I will never get sick of it.

I was a huge fan of:
Jefferson Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us
The Cars - We Built This City (on Rock and Roll)
Don Henley - All of his music, but I had a special place for "A Month of Sundays"
MC Hammer - What kid didn't have the "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" album ?
Wham! - Yeah, nowadays you may look at the cover of "Make it Big" and think "Hmm... GAY !" but back then it was RAD !
Kenny Loggins - Highway to the Dangerzone
and Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
-
Well David Bowie was the first music I ever listened to, and I remember dancing to songs like Let's Dance and Modern Love in the living room with my mom when I was maybe seven or so. Because of the major speech impediment I had back then, we even had a parody of Rebel, Rebel (Mumble, Mumble).
So definitely Bowie.
-
Smashing Pumpkins - XYU
Age 9, I think. I liked a lot of other songs on that album too (and still do) but XYU was the loudest and therefore my favorite.
Also "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, but I didn't know that at the time. At age 7 it was just that awesome song about the jungle on the Ninja Turtles III soundtrack. I rediscovered it last year and love it just as much as I used to.
-
The first tape I ever bought myself was the Mortal Kombat: Annihilation soundtrack. My favorite song off it was probably "Fire" by Scooter.
I have a sister who's 7 years older than me, and she was a teenager in the 1990s, so I liked a lot of stuff by Nirvana, and Nine Inch Nails. So "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Head Like a Hole" I liked a lot. Also..."Blister in the Sun" by Violent Femmes and "Wonderwall" by Oasis. Oh, also "Today" by the Smashing Pumpkins and "Why Can't I Be You" by The Cure.
-
The first music I remember hearing and loving, other than the "children's songs" was La Mer by Debussy. I remember loving it and wanting my mother to play it over and over. I must have been about eight or nine years old.
-
When I was five, my favorite song was Another One Bites the Dust. Everyone loves Queen, woohoo!
-
I had a 78 of Peter Pears and Benjamin Britten performing The Foggy, Foggy Dew.
-
I used to love listening to Queen, Creed, Early Beatles, and a bunch of gay christian rock.
-
Toto - "Africa"
The Beatles - "Lovely Rita"
I remember when my brother was about 4 or 5, he made my mom play Genesis' "Invisible Touch" 10+ times in a row.
-
"If you'll be my bodyguard" by Paul Simon came out when I was 4, and was my favorite song from 5 until about 10 I think. I think I liked that it sort of hinted at a very exciting world with words that I understood, but in combination that confused me a little.
-
The only two songs I really remember listening to were Weezer's "Undone" and The Cranberries' "Zombie." Throw in a lot of The Smashing Pumpkins and you've got the gist of what I was exposed to as a child, via my brothers.
-
Go ninja, go ninja, go! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFLGRidfFo4)
Other than that, I just listened to whatever my older brother listened to which seemed to just be Weezer and Beck.
-
growing up in jr high and freshman year I listened to this weird hodgepodge of stuff like Pearl Jam, John Denver, alanis morrisette, the smiths, queen and The Grateful Dead.
it was all my mothers music and I grew up with it so that's mainly what I listened to, oh and Gorillaz, they were the first band I liked that my mom didn't so I listened to that to.
-
Genuine - "Pony"
I was in like fourth grade when this song was super popular. It played everyday on the bus ride home. No joke though, I am often horrified by songs that I hear kids that I work with singing. Which makes me feel better a little, because I had no idea what this song was about.
-
Everything by the Beatles and the Stones basically.
-
Everything by the Beatles.
Plus, our selection of road trip cassettes:
Eurythmics Greatest Hits
Supergrass - I Should Coco
Blur - Parklife
Seal - Seal (I)
-
I listened to whatever my parents listened to. So it was basically Joe Cocker and Paul McCartney. I vaguely remember being able to sing along to both of their live albums whenever they were being played in the car.
On a side note, why is it that live albums always sound way better when you're driving?
-
Embarassing, but I'll be honest.
songs:
Snow - Informer (12 Inches of Snow was my very first album!)
P.M. Dawn - The Ways of the Wind
Toni, Tony, Tone - (I can't for the life of me remember the song name)
Amy Grant - anything and everything
If you've ever been to Eugene, OR, basically anything that was on Magic 94 in the late 80's and early 90's.
albums:
U2 - Achtung Baby
The Seventy Seven's - Sticks and Stones
-
The Cars - We Built This City (on Rock and Roll)
That was Starship, not The Cars.
Toto - "Africa"
I still love that song.
-
when i was a youngin, youngin, i listened to what my dad did, so a lot of carpenters and celine dion and that shit
once i got wise though, it's all rap from there for most of my childhood ages eh...7-14. specially dr dre and 2pac. "the roach"? i got high to that song so many times. that other song about coke (hey-yo for ya-yo, all in my nasal) was pretty popular too.
-
I loved "I'll Be Going" by Ariel/Spectrum. Specifically the ridiculous bit at the start, which my dad used to imitate, complete with harmonica.
-
I was a pop whore...I loved the backstreet boys sooo much. And Pink...I still kind of like pink... I adored the beatles, though. I had their greatest hits cd and i pretty much played it out...
-
...Greatest Hits?
Presumably that was either the blue or red album?
-
Edit: Probably this one, actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Greatest_Hits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Greatest_Hits)
-
I was a big Rockapella fan in middle school. Backstreet Boys were my fave in elementary school, and I got to see them in concert in the 6th grade in the executive suite of the San Jose Arena.
Man, those days.
-
Ringo's Beatles songs.
Man, between Yellow Submarine and THomas the tank Engine, that guy had a monopoly on my childhood.
Oh, and a shitload of mainstream radio, but let's not go into that.
-
Everything by the Beatles, my dad loves them and I grew up on their music.
The soundtrack to my childhood was Big Shiny Tunes 1-3 and Green Day's Dookie and Nimrod.
-
Edit: Probably this one, actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Greatest_Hits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Greatest_Hits)
definitely that one
-
"Blue (Da Ba Dee)"" - Eiffel 65
:|
I'm glad I'm not eight anymore...

I'm too old for Thomas but also found The Beatles and particularly Ringo's Beatles' songs (esp Yellow Submarine) to be awesome.
I also really liked that weird one hit wonder song - Friends and Lovers - "I think it's so groovy now that people are finally getting together!" "Reach out in the darkness" and all that.
Also - Cat Stevens, The Wiz, and CSNY.
-
Beatles - Twist & Shout
and someone doing a cover of "Bear Necessities" from The Jungle Book.
Best song ever.
-
Early on, it was definitely something my parents played. A lot of records, and some truly bizarre ones, at that. ABBA, The Bee Gees(pre-disco, as was my dad's like for them), Simon and Garfunkel.
There was some Nana Mouskouri also, The Irish Rovers and a very bizarre duet record a called Perhaps Love that featured Placido Domingo and....John Denver. It's astounding.
Later, I was into things like Bon Jovi and Motely Crue (it was the 80's and they were still considered somewhat dangerous).
I freely admit to getting into Industrial as a teenager because no one else was listening to it, but it's become a life long love now.
-
Elton John was the shit when I was 6 or so. That and Creedence Clearwater Revival. I then got into Metallica, AC/DC and Megadeth when I was 11, so I guess they'd count too.
-
Whatever my mom and dad played in the car...
Metallica
Linkin Park
The Beatles
Rammstein
The B-52s
That "What if God Smoked Cannabis" song
Tracy Chapman - Behind the Wall, and probably a few others
Creedance Clearwater Revival
Bob Marley
And tons more that I can't remember, but will add as I remember.
-
Less than jake, choking victim, goldfinger, and a bunch of lame stuff

I don't.
"Nietzsche would be proud." Snicker snicker.
