Title: Beyond Brand New
Post by: pentaen on 16 Sep 2008, 16:55
Hey QC forums.

What type of music would you suggest to turn a fan of Brand New onto some different types of music other than more poppy stuff.

Her favorite songs by them are:
Sowing Season
Limousine
Play Crack Sky

not quite my cup of tea although i was finally forced to listen to the song Degausser from their most recent lp and, you know, it wasnt that bad at all really...

I really like Sowing Season, The Devil and God are Raging Inside me is a fantastic album imo.

My entire library.  Because I also happen to enjoy Brand New from time to time (i.e. only in concert because their records pale in comparison).

But seriously, try:

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
Editors
Jets to Brazil (probably their latest record)
Modest Mouse
Honestly, Slint would probably be a good suggestion.
Cursive
Margot & the Nuclear So-and-So's
The Pixies

And there are probably more, better suggestions, but this was just a quick perusal of my library.

Also, it'll probably be a longshot, but Neutral Milk Hotel.  Jesse Lacey is known to cover songs like, "Oh Comely" and "Two Headed Boy Part Two" in concert and insists that In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is "the most beautiful record ever made."

I heard a cover of "Holland, 1945" by Kevin Devine and i'm pretty sure Jesse Lacey played with him on the recording.

Also, Deja Entendu is a great album.  Devil and God... is a pretty good album too, but i keep having trouble getting into the second half of the album.

Yeah, me too.  Deja Entendu is actually pretty excellent, if a bit mopey.  Then again, all their albums are pretty mopey.  Each has their highlights, though.

Hehe, I love the little bit Jesse adds at the end of "Play Crack the Sky."  I didn't get it was a reference to the Beatles until I heard Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for about their tenth time.

I liked their first two albums but I never listened to their last. as far as their particular genre goes, they are quite good

is she looking stictly for bands like Brand New or just branching out in general?

I felt the same way at first, but now I enjoy the second half much more.  The worst song on the album is Luca though.  I've actually grown to like Devil and God more than Deja probably.  I think the demos for this album were the best thing that Brand New has put out as a whole.

I think there's a lot of poppy rock out there she might like (since I don't accept the premise of the question):

Taking Back Sunday
Say Anything
Thursday
Meriwether
Cursive
MewithoutYou
Bright Eyes

Arrgg.  Say Anything have some of the catchiest songs ever and I hate them for it.
