OK, I know there aren't a lot of Bright Eyes fans on here - if any - but I would still recommend this album as it has a pretty markedly different sound, and a new lyrical depth and maturity that he often lacked before. When I first played it, I was kind of surprised at how much of a classic rock/classic country/Americana sound it has, and not in the folk-centric way he did on I'm Wide Awake It's Morning.
At the risk of being stoned (lol) I would dare to say that if you like the last two Okkervil River albums you should give this a shot, because I would say it is very nearly as good as The Stand-Ins.

Man, I fucking love this album. I still listen to the majority of it every morning, whilst going to school...
I listened to it in a very strange way. I started properly listening at 'I don't Want To Die In The Hospital', and from that song onwards, and it wasn't until about 2 weeks ago that I actually listened to the first half of the album. Now I have, I can honestly say that I think 'Cape Canaveral' and 'Get Well Cards' are two of the best songs on it.

Wow, you compared a Conor Oberst album to an Okkervil River album? I must listen to this.

I like this album, but I couldn't quite determine what made it different from Bright Eyes recordings enough to not just go under the name (not that it really makes a difference). I also did not find either of the last two okkervil river albums particularily interesting (save a couple songs), so I would listen to this album over either... although I don't really see a comparison? ...
Great album!

the difference is that bright eyes isnt just Conor, it also include Mike Mogis. he did not have anything to do with the new cd so Conor decided to go under his own name, rather than Bright Eyes.
but yeah this is a great cd. first cd I bought in stores in quite a long time. actually I think the last cd I bought in a store before this one was Cassadaga. lol. he's going to be down here on november 18th. I already bought my tickets. I cant wait.

ahhh I see for some odd reason I was never aware of that.

I thought it also had to do with the album being on Merge instead of Saddle Creek.

I've been listening to this album a bunch. I've heard a lot of half-criticism against it, but I just think it's a very well written album. Definitely a different flavor than the Bright Eyes material (and much better than Cassadaga, I'd wager).
