Anyone else here on the boards big fans of these games (X-Com, Jagged Alliance sort of stuff)? Being a big fan of these kinds of games, it's always baffled me why computer companies don't produce more and more of these games, and the ones that aren't in the Jagged Alliance series almost invariably suck. I tried out the demo version of Silent Storm and enjoyed it, but I feel that the interface can get clumsy fast (maybe I just need to play it more).
-
The only reason why computer companies don't make so many of these is that the interfaces themselves - they're hard to innovate. Plus, making too many of those would make the genre go old very fast. A few of these games also end up looking like carbon copies of other ones.
-
I just started playing Operation Darkness. (xbox 360) It's ok.
-
Are there any good mods for Silent Storm? While I enjoy WWII-era games, using WWII-era weaponry can get tiring, and I'm not sure how I feel about the futuristic weaponry (Panzerkleins) that's in the game.
-
Has anyone played Brigade E5 or 7.62MM? Apparently they're spiritual successors to the Jagged Alliance series but both are apparently full of bugs and crappy interfaces. Something Awful did a Let's Play (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/LP762/) of the latter, and while the game was enjoyed, the player found far too many bugs to have to deal with, and ended the game in a hail of bullets, resulting in the death of the entire squad.
Also, was Fallout Tactics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_Tactics:_Brotherhood_of_Steel) a good game?
-
Tactics is quite good I thought. If you're looking for Fallout humor I would say it's meh, but it's a lot better than a lot of Fallout fans gave it credit for.
-
My god, that LP for 7.62mm was funny. The system seems like it would be a fun one as well, is that system similar to jagged alliance, or do they use a turn based thing for it?

You guys ever played Shadow Watch (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/shadowwatch/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;read-review)? It was a noble failure in every sense of the phrase; it was scuttled by its interface and some questionable game design, but the concept and presentation (well, aside from the shoddy voice acting) is so solid that it still itches around in my brain and makes me wish someone more competent would take a crack at a spiritual successor of sorts. Basically, think comic book style presentation featuring a 5 man squad of NPCs who each have different abilities that dovetail neatly with easily identified archetypes. You had the shotgun toting tank, the martial arts/stealth specialist, the helpless gadget guy, the hot-headed demo man, the always-professional sniper, and the leader, a well-rounded character with an array of morale and initiative boosting abilities. Of course, in keeping with the "Good Lord, is this game ever a tease," pattern, the characterization ended up being paper thin once you got past the art design and dossiers.
It still burns me up though; check out these screenshots. (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/shadowwatch/images.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gsimage&tag=images;header;more) This game could have been such a killer old-school game rather than just mediocre. Damn it all.

Baldur's Gate II with the right mods can be similar to a tactical strategy game. Otherwise, I prefer tactical shooters (like the SWAT and Rainbow Six series) to tactical strategy games.

I just remembered a really good western shoot out game where you essentially had two choices: stealth or shootout. It was a squad game, kind of, you started out with two characters to control and then you got more until you had five or so. It was real time, so to kill people effectively with more people at once you set up sequences for when to shoot who. I cannot remember the name of this game, but I really want to play it. Anyone?

I'd love a Close Combat type game on squad level.
I'd love more CLose Combat games in general. :-D

Desperadoes: Wanted Dead or Alive (http://pc.ign.com/objects/015/015315.html)?

Full Spectrum Warrior?

Desperadoes: Wanted Dead or Alive (http://pc.ign.com/objects/015/015315.html)?
Thank you!

I liked Full Spectrum Warrior, but it didn't run too well on my laptop. The concept was pretty rad but I prefer Jagged Alliance 2 (plus the fan-made 1.13 patch which is what I play religiously other than GTA: San Andreas), you know, being able to control individual dudes.
There's a lot of games mentioned on this thread and I'll try to look at as much as I can. I tried playing Shadow Watch, hated the interface. I think that the Smart Pause System in 7.62mm is more like you order your troops to go that-a-way, you encounter an enemy (pause), you order your troops to fire on the enemy, enemy goes down (pause), etc etc. I tried the demo of Brigade E5 and it paused way too much. I would love to see a tactical squad command game with usable cover systems (like how you can order troops to go under cover in Company of Heroes, or in Full Spectrum Warrior) and simultaneous group movement (so you can have a whole squad put suppressing fire on an enemy unit, like in Brothers in Arms or again, Full Spectrum Warrior).
I am waiting with bated breath so hard for Jagged Alliance 3, but after playing JA2 with the 1.13 patch (http://ja2v113.pbwiki.com/) I might just be disappointed by not having those features in the new game.
-
Yeah, there's absolutely no way to defend Shadow Watch's interface. I'm actually half-heartedly hoping some of you guys try it out just so your minds can be blown by how obtuse it is. You can't even use the mouse for movement.

Also, was Fallout Tactics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_Tactics:_Brotherhood_of_Steel) a good game?
It was pretty good. As a Fallout game, it was a failure, but as a tactics game, it was pretty fun. I enjoyed it.
-
I played the demo of Jagged Alliance 2 to death when I was younger. Wish there were more games like it.
I should probably get the full version sometime though. B'cause I never played that one.
-
Personally, I thought Fallout Tactics was mediocre. I managed to beat almost every mission by only using one character.
-
damn Desperados game that is excellent but won't run on my computer. Damn it to hell!
Does anyone know if the second one was better or as good?
-
i keep reading the title of this thread as Squid-Level Strategy Games.
now that would be something else!
-
That's basically X-COM: Terror from the deep. You know, it's strategy and you mostly work at squid level. That is, under the sea, shooting aliens.
-
sweet!
i am all about squid-level!
