Title: Offend Maggie
Post by: Valrus on 07 Oct 2008, 11:26
I know there was a recent Deerhoof thread, but it's kind of petered out and I just downloaded this album today. I subscribe to eMusic but I paid the $10 to get it off iTunes anyway because I couldn't wait.

I've only listened to it once yet. Not enough to form a solid opinion.

Really I started this thread to lure (p)Tommy over to talk about this album because I know he's the biggest Deerhoof fan around and I agree with him that Deerhoof is one of the most exciting bands around and "Spirit Ditties of No Tone" is maybe the best song ever.

Tommy, what's with the new account? PM me.

Well I really like it. I haven't listened to all of yet but I like what I've heard, It's also the first Deerhoof album I've listened to. I'm surprised they can crank out so many good albums in such short time periods.

funny story:

i downloaded Apple O' a while back and really disliked it...but for some reason i ended up putting it on my iPod anyway "just in case" and the other day i was looking for something to listen to and i came to Deerhoof and i was like "huh. i have no idea what they sound like...but it's on my iPod. weird." so  listened to it and now Apple O' is one of my favorite cds.

Offend Maggie is alright but, like you, i've only listened to it a couple times and can't really say much about it. it's more accesible, for sure but how much i actually like it is yet to be seen.

AOL has a full stream of the album here (http://spinner.aol.com/artists/new-releases-full-cds?defaultTab=11).  Judging by the first couple songs, it is markedly more accessible, but I'm still liking it.

I liked it enough.  I didn't think it was much different than, say, Milk Man, Apple O', or The Runner's Four, except that it may be ever so slightly more straightforward than those ones.

"My Purple Past" is the stand-out track for me so far, I just luuuurv Greg's drumming.

Bunny jump,
Bunny jump,
Bunny Bunny.

It can never be another Runners Fours, but I enjoyed Friend Opportunity so who knows.

i can't be the only person who thinks the last track, "Jagged Fruit" is amazing - when it lets rip 2½ minutes in - WOW  :-o  - dissonances to revel in  8-)

A few listens in, Offend Maggie strikes me as being most like Apple O' in feel.

I never really got into Apple O', but I think I may not have given it enough of a chance. At some point I will have to listen to the two back-to-back to see if this impression holds up.

You are not the only one. Jagged Fruit is amazing.

Basket Ball Get Your Groove makes me so happy.

After one and a half listen through, I love it. Seems like their most accessible so far though, which is nice in a way but speaks against longevity. We'll see.

I got this on Vinyl pre-order (Along with a book of Piano music, which is pretty cool). The track list on the vinyl is different to the download I got from the KRS website but I assume that it's supposed to be. Unfortunately the needle on my record player has shat the bed and I've not replaced it yet but I did listen to it a few times before that happened and I do think it is excellent. It's no Reveille but it is pretty great all the same. It's a shame the nearest show they are playing to me is London, they are astounding live.

Anyone here going to the November 14th show at the Echoplex? How's the venue?

I got up and left residence early just so I could get the album as soon as possible.
And honestly.
I love it.
It was pretty much what I wanted them release. But yeah, it's still no Runners Four.
For me, nothing can beat Wrong Time Capsule.
