Title: The one Daft Punk song you can't stand...
Post by: greyhawk80 on 08 Oct 2008, 08:05
Now, don't get me wrong here. I love Daft Punk, but there is one song that I just can't listen to. That song is "Rollin' & Scratchin'" off of Homework. It just grates on my brain like fingernails on a chalkboard. Its like they made harsh sound just for the sake of making harsh sound. I have to hit skip everytime it queues up.

How about the rest of you? Is there a Daft Punk song that you just can't sit through, no matter how hard you try?

(waits for Jeph's music assassin to slit his throat...)

Technologic, but I think it's because I'd had it slammed into my head by those iPod commercials before I started listening to Daft Punk.

Too much of a good thing, y'know?

a lot of their later stuff doesn't seem to agree with me. alive 2007 made some of them better but i still dont listen to those songs a lot.

also what is up with cadillac using Justice in their commercials and Lincoln using Daft Punk? We're getting dangerously close to those old Mitsubishi commercials with breakdancing passengers haha

I can listen to one or two songs of theirs a month.  But outside of that it gets kinda of sickening, like eating 4 funnel cakes in one day (something I won't ever repeat).  Remixes are prone to be played more (Soulwax's take on Robot Rock was pretty boss).

Probably something off the arse end of discovery. That whole album really dies out at the end, which is something I can't stand in a record.

It's not that I don't like Daft Punk, it's that I've heard Discovery so many goddamn times. All the annoying fat cunts I hate that somehow show up at the parties I go to will always demand that something from that album gets played, and then proceed to grind on something or someone who's all of the sudden very anxious to go home.

See, I love Daft Punk, and Have been listening to it forever, but most of their reduxes from Alive 2007 just suck out loud. However, anyone stating that DP isn't good is basically just jealous that they weren't international Robot Pop sensations 1st, and I dare you to prove me wrong.

Or maybe, just maybe, we don't like trashy french house music.

Just throwing that out there.

There is like, one Daft Punk song I think is alright actually, I will say that. That song is called 'Aerodynamic' iirc. Anything with vocals is gash though. Also, there is only one international robot pop sensation.

So did Homework, really. The songs got retardedly repetitive at the end and became simply boring.
So any of those end-album songs (O HAI "Too Long") or most of the stuff from Human After All.

That having been said, I don't really like Daft Punk. I guess the plasticity is the point, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it. Still, I'd rather listen to Daft Punk than Uffie or Justice or whatever the fuck Ed Banger puts out.

I'm going to have to agree with Khar here.  I can't stand any of their songs.  It's all incredibly boring, and I really can't understand what people see in their music that makes people flip out when someone so much as says "daft punk might not be as good as you think they are"  (or worse).

I tried really really hard to get into electronica/techno/house/trance/etcetcetc/ (insert one of the 40 different names for the same boring "music") when I was about 17, but gave it up due to excessive boredom.

I think the idea behind the rabid love is that you aren't supposed to be unhappy with happy music.  Put it this way: I will sometimes play these guys when I'm depressed or upset about something.  No matter how much I do not like them, it's hard to not cheer up at least a little bit.  The fans (not all of them, obviously) are taking that and applying it to everything you can say about the band.  At least, that's the impression I've gotten from all the Daft Punk fans I know.  Besides, I've moved on to other happy music.

Nothing wrong with electronica in general. Daft Punk are DANCE Electronica though, try some of the other 30,000 subgenres.

Ha ha. Ha. Daft Punk is far from 'dance'. They are pure house music, at least in their early days and some of Discovery. I don't know where the hell they went for Human After All, LOL.

But seriously folks, I am a huge DP fan (listening to Beta Wax at the moment) and I find it hard to hate most of their stuff (which is why I'm cringing at all of the hater posts! :p). If you're a DP newbie then you're allowed to hate HAA and Alive 2007 just because it is the most repetitive and grinding DP music, but it's still good in it's own way. The remixes of HAA kick ass (see: Erol Alkan's Horrorhouse Dub (Brainwasher), Vitalic Remix (Technologic)) and some Alive 2007 tracks are pure joy (see: Too Long/Steam Machine, Face to Face/Short Circuit, the big finale thing). But for casual listeners I can see how they could come off as bad.

That said, my least favorite DP songs are as follows:
Veridis Quo - It's not a TERRIBLE song, but it's just slow and boring and filler music for Discovery.
The Brainwasher - There is no rhythm and the Dalek going "I am braaaain waaaashherrr" gets incredibly annoying.
all the remixes from Daft Club (Chord Memory, Mothership Reconnection, Forget About the World) - They pale in comparison to some of DP's other remixes (see: Alive 2007).
Rollin' and Scratchin' - It's not terrible, but the screeching scratch synth thingy at the end drives me up a wall.
Rock and Roll - See above! It's like the end of R+S but extended over 7 minutes.

Oh, and I *used* to hate Technologic, Robot Rock etc. but they're fun to listen to in small doses. They also make great remix material.
I also used to hate Too Long and Teachers, but they are now like my favorite DP songs. Take that how you may.

Now back into the obscurity of the shadows...

How is "pure house music" not "dance"?

Not a big fan of Nightvision, Voyager, Veridis Quo or Too Long on Discovery. I like pretty much all of Homework. On first listen I wasn't big on Rock and Roll or Rollin' and Scratchin' either but now I think they're awesome.

Haven't listened much to Human After All but Make Love is boring and Robot Rock would be a lot better with just a tad more variation.

Also on Alive 2007 Around the World / Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is way overrated.

I'm not saying it isn't, just that "dance" is often thought of as A) music primarily to dance to and B) the crappy mainstream poppy gunk that permeates top 40 radio and electronic stations.

Alive 2007 is hit or miss on certain tracks. I think Around the World /HBFS is under 'miss'. But there are some tracks there that are made of pure awesome.
Title: Re: The one Daft Punk song you can't stand...
Post by: FireAarro on 02 Nov 2008, 16:51
I agree, one of my favourites from Alive 2007 is the Human After All/Superheroes/Rock and Roll track.

I don't see how Daft Punk isn't music primarily to dance to, however! Sure it's great for close listening as well. But most things I think of when I hear "pure house music" are even more dance-not-listening-orientated than Daft Punk.
Title: Re: The one Daft Punk song you can't stand...
Post by: imagist42 on 02 Nov 2008, 17:15
If you think Daft Punk isn't "music primarily to dance to," you are kidding yourself. On the other hand, I have never heard any of the Top 40 referred to as "dance music," even if people dance to quite a number of the songs because, well, they are incredibly popular songs that can be danced to effectively.

Also, I don't know about you guys but there is nothing about "Around the World/Harder Better Faster Stronger" that is overrated to me. I get chills every time I listen to the 4:44 mark, when the music cuts out to the line "Our work is never over," and am just so incredibly pumped to shake everything I've got afterward it's almost like I can actually dance.
Title: Re: The one Daft Punk song you can't stand...
Post by: FireAarro on 03 Nov 2008, 04:35
The transition in the middle of the track (the quick cut to "work it") sounds awkward and forced, and the harmony is fucked for the second half of the song. Which sucks, because the original two tracks are two of my favourites.
Title: Re: The one Daft Punk song you can't stand...
Post by: imagist42 on 03 Nov 2008, 17:26
The transition could have been better, but they pull it together somewhat as the synth comes in on a crescendo. I really don't know what you're talking about in the rest of the song though, I hear no problem with the harmony.

Maybe I should clarify that I think "Harder Better Faster Stronger" is a pretty boring dance song on its own, but with a far better vocal component than most Daft Punk songs; on the other hand, "Around the World" has one of Daft Punk's more interesting beats, but awfully annoying vocals. Combine the better parts of the both of them and I am slap-happy.
