Ok thought this would be kinda fun......
So I guess what I'm looking for in this thread is your favorite movie based on it's musical soundtrack in correlation to scenes .
You could also go for favorite director(based on overall compilation of their musical choice in all of their films ect...)
I find that Tarantino often makes excellent choices of music relating to the scenes of his films.
and I am not just saying this because he is Quentin Tarantino...promise.
-
Conan the Barbarian, followed very closely by Oldboy, and then Werckmeister Harmonies (only two songs in the soundtrack, and they have the same melody). The director, Bela Tarr, has used Mihaly Vig for all of his scores since Satantango, in which Mihaly Vig played a lead role. I should also add that there is about 20 minutes of music for Satantango, which is 7 and a half hours long.
-
hmmm thats a toughie
id have to say fight club, only because where is my mind is amazingly used at the end
-
2001: A Space Odyssey
Or if I'm in one of my "folksy" moods, I'd say Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
-
The Everything is Illuminated score is probably one of my favorites of all time.
I even convinced a friend to watch the movie based on playing her the soundtrack for weeks. She had read the book and did not enjoy the experience and was therefore a little weary of giving the movie a shot. After hearing the music for a while she became interested in the actual movie.
-
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
God damn, Jon Brion. Way to be.
-
I will admit I had my gun loaded upon reading the words "Lord of the Rings", but your point does prove well. haha
And, as far as, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, I totally agree.
Not only did I personally find the music enjoyable to listen to, but I also was astonished by how each song really made the corresponding scene that much better.
The music really did "make" that movie. (George Clooney in a hair net was also a plus haha)
-
2001: A Space Odyssey
Pretty much this. And Requiem For A Dream.
-
No way, the best movie soundtrack ever is for Until the End of the World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Until_the_End_of_the_World_(soundtrack)).
It's also a pretty good flick, too.
-
so I was just outside smoking a cigarette and I got to thinking. This may just be me but; Party Monster totally makes me almost wish I was a club kid and enjoyed bad music. haha I mean would it be so bad to do whatever you want, while shakin some serious booty?
-
Until the End of the World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Until_the_End_of_the_World_(soundtrack)).
Dang. And I was gonna be all "Um Trainspotting hurrr." Although it does seem a Danny Boyle directed film has a pretty good chance of having a decent soundtrack.
-
Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait
it's probably cheating so as a back up
Snatch had a great score.
-
Oh brother where art thou, probably, but I really don't watch enough movies! :/
-
No Country for Old Men
-
Romeo + Juliet
-
Zidane: 21st Century Portrait
Requiem for a Dream
The Fountain
28 Days Later (East Hastings alone makes this fit the list but the rest is great too)
-
any movie with Hans Zimmer
-
O brother, and High Fidelity. Stevie Wonder, Dylan, Beta Band... just yummy.
-
Pi had a great soundtrack, as did Full Metal Jacket, with all the 70's tracks.
And +1 for Lord of the Rings part 1. I have it on CD, and some of the tracks make great listening on their own.
-
28 Days Later
Yeah, I'm a huge sucker for East Hastings, great song. And the others on that soundtrack aren't too bad either.
-
I quite like Hans Zimmer's work on the Pirates of the Caribbean series. I don't know what else he's done though.
Eddie Vedder's soundtrack for Into the Wild was amazing. I actually listened to the soundtrack for four or five months until i finally saw the movie.
Edit: "Fuckin In the Bushes" towards the end of Snatch was AWESOME
-
Guys, the Harder They Come.
That movie would be nothing without its soundtrack.
-
breakfast on pluto, any wes anderson movie (especially the life aquatic)
-
Superfly
-
I'm ashamed. Seriously, no one mentioned Pan's Labyrinth yet?
-
Paris, Texas
The Ry Cooder soundtrack is absolutely superb in every way. Of course it is probably also the best filmed movie ever though, that helps.
-
I'm surprised no one has said Once. The power behind that movie and it's music coming from Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. Brilliant.
Also, this movie introduced me to The Frames indirectly. Now I am hopelessly addicted.
-
Once is my second favorite.
-
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Goddamn that soundtrack was great.
-
Yeah, has anyone said The Proposition?
-
fuck man, the godfather.
-
Bladerunner
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Fountain
-
fuck man
What is this movie?
-
best "fucking" soundtrack ever that's what
-
No Country for Old Men
I'm assuming you're joking here. At least I hope so, because I laughed pretty good at it.
-
2001: A Space Odyssey
Yes.
I adore the soundtrack to ghost in the shell, taiko drumming = awesome.
The Wall is also awesome, but should that count?
-
I figure this site is perfect for this thread:
http://ost-tube.blogspot.com/
Soundtracks to movies and what not
-
Requiem For A Dream.
Oh yeah, forgot about you. Strings = sex
-
2001 is awfully cool but possibly not my top choice. It is, however, my top choice for movies whose music/feel inspired a band to make an album based upon it.
-
Trainspotting
24 Hour Party People
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe
Also, I realise it's not a movie... but the Simpsons episode 'Cape Feare' has one of the greatest scores I've ever heard. Sideshow Bob's theme gives me chills.
-
Control
-
The Fountain
Paris, Texas
The Ry Cooder soundtrack is absolutely superb in every way. Of course it is probably also the best filmed movie ever though, that helps.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Goddamn that soundtrack was great.
Yeah, has anyone said The Proposition?
^
And if I had to choose a non-score soundtrack, it would be Gummo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gummo_(soundtrack)).
-
The Big Chill?
HA MAYBE NOT.
-
Kids had an awesome soundtrack.
Too bad almost none of the songs on it were actually used in the movie. :?
-
I was prepared to cast my vote for Roll Bounce but now I think I have to change it to
breakfast on pluto
-
I'm surprised no one has said Once. The power behind that movie and it's music coming from Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. Brilliant.
Also, this movie introduced me to The Frames indirectly. Now I am hopelessly addicted.
I LOVE Once, and I have the soundtrack. the last minute and a half or so of When Your Mind's Made Up is some of the most powerful music I've ever encountered.
-
It's gotta be TLotR guys. The only way to go.
-
Donnie Darko deserves a mention?
-
For score, or soundtrack?
-
OMG Garden State is liek totally my favourite it has THE SHINS and everything!
Zach Braff is soooooo cute!
(sorry)
-
Assuming that was in jest, you'll fit in well here.
-
Hey, I like the Shins!
Zach Braff's funny-lookin', though.
-
I have nothing against the Shins either, but if I had a dollar for every person who told me to check out "this awesome unknown band" when Garden State came out...
In fact probably half of the cuts on the soundtrack are pretty great, but the album itself seemed to be a new touchstone for people to grab hold of once they figured "being indie" was cool.
Or something. I dunno.
-
There's nothing wrong with the Shins at all, it was the way the post was worded that made it funny.
-
In fact probably half of the cuts on the soundtrack are pretty great, but the album itself seemed to be a new touchstone for people to grab hold of once they figured "being indie" was cool.
Such things are a necessary evil. If she had played him "King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1" instead of that Shins song, I doubt anyone would be complaining that a bunch of new people got into NMH because of it.
Also, that movie is amazing, fuck the haters.
-
Trainspotting, narrowly over Donnie Darko.
-
It is very tempting to name Trainspotting simply because it opens and closes with two of my favourite songs, but I am a touch resentful of Born Slippy at the same time. Far too many people seem to regard Underworld as this one-hit-wonder band because of the song, which bugs me. It's not even their best dance song (likely "Pearl's Girl") or their best song (in my opinion, "Jumbo" by far).
Besides, Trainspotting would really be chosen on the basis of the songs on the soundtrack rather than the soundtrack within the film. Dismissing Trainspotting, I am torn between:
Requiem for a Dream, for obvious reasons. It's not coincidental that every second film trailer nowadays rips this soundtrack off...
Vertigo, because the score here is just perfect for developing and sustaining the mood. <3 Bernard Hermann
-
The soundtrack for There Will Be Blood is incredible.
Also, I just saw Vanilla Sky and was happily impressed with the music for it.
Can't think of an all-time favorite right now.
-
Vanilla Sky most definitely had pretty much perfect music in it. My girlfriend at the time and I saw it in the theater and had to like, physically restrain ourselves from yelling "HOLY FUCK" when "Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space" started playing.
-
On the subject of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I haven't listened to Nick Cave at all until this movie. What is his music like?
-
Nick Cave is the corpse of Elvis brought back to life using Voodoo magic and then possessed by a demon and dressed like hitman.
Listen to him now.
Er, you cunts.
Start with Abbatoir Blues or Let Love In.
-
Acceptably, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Death Proof. Probably less acceptably, Juno and Definitely, Maybe. The score for another Coen Brothers film, Raising Arizona, is very cool. Deliverance is worth watching just for "Duelling Banjos". And, I guess Almost Famous has a pretty good soundtrack - and Dazed and Confused works, even if I don't like all the songs in themselves. Best scores are by John Carpenter and Ennio Morricone - The Untouchables is amazing. Oh, and I have a residual fondness for Ash's cover of "Cantina Band" from Star Wars.
As for TV shows, I would say The West Wing. Yes, I'm biased as it's my favourite show, but they make the best possible use of Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" cover, and they have amazing versions of "Shed a Little Light" (James Taylor) by Aimee Mann and "A Change is Gonna Come" (Sam Cooke) by James Taylor. Plus they use Ryan Adams ("Desire", from the underrated Demolition album). I always liked ER's music choices as well, and though I didn't watch the show religiously, it was cool that Friends used Jefferson Airplane at the end.
-
OMG Garden State is liek totally my favourite
You are wonderful, mostly because I was thinking the exact same thing (sarcastically, of course).
My favorite movie based on the soundtrack is probably The Beatles' Yellow Submarine
-
Really, really surprised noone has mentioned it yet:
Dead Man
-
Royal Tennenbaums had a great soundtrack. Actually, all of Wes Anderson's movies have great music.
-
Royal Tennenbaums had a great soundtrack. Actually, all of Wes Anderson's movies have great music.
The man should just make mix tapes for a living. Not that that could really be a living, or anything.
-
The only two movies I have ever commented on it's soundtrack while watching it for the first time were:
Kill Bill vol. 2
Wall-E
-
Hackers. HACKERS. What is WRONG with you people!? ;)
Some people have mentioned Trainspotting (and I will too,) and someone mentioned that they don't want to say Trainspotting because they think everyone thinks Underworld is a one-hit-wonder due to "Born Slippy". I have to disagree with the assessment that "Pearl's Girl" is their best dance track - that would have to be "Cowgirl."
Some others have mentioned "Into the Wild" whose soundtrack is by Eddie Vedder. I bought the album but couldn't get into anything other than the popular track "Hard Sun".
Even though I haven't seen the movie, I'll mention "Singles" because it has Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, Smashing Pumpkins, and Alice in Chains.
But seriously. Hackers. There are also two additional compilations - Hackers 2 and Hackers 3 - neither of which are from a movie. They're "Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Hackers." I can't remember, but Hackers 2 may have a few tracks from the movie that didn't make it on the first soundtrack release. So there you go - a single movie with a full soundtrack and two additional inspired collections.
-
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,
Solaris,
The Virgin Suicides
-
The "I'm Not There" soundtrack is great.
It's a great album full of great songs covered by great bands written by Bob Dylan.
-
On the subject of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I haven't listened to Nick Cave at all until this movie. What is his music like?
Bob Dylan as a Satanist, sung by Johnny Cash. Only with more sex.
Start with Let Love In or Abattoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus.
-
Start with Abbatoir Blues or Let Love In.
Start with Let Love In or Abattoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus.
It's already been taken care of.
Edit:
Nick Cave is the corpse of Elvis brought back to life using Voodoo magic and then possessed by a demon and dressed like hitman.
What a damned accurate description.
-
Mean Streets fo sho. And I'd second Dead Man.
-
The Darjeeling Limited had a pretty kickass soundtrack. DeVotchKa is a great band.
-
28 Days/Weeks Later
Almost Famous
LoTR 2. I loves me some Rohan strings.
-
The Blues Brothers.
-
I'll second any Wes Anderson movie.
Seu George and his Portuguese Bowie covers practically made The Life Aquatic.
-
How about Lost In Translation?
-
I agree on the Virgin Suicides.
Also, I saw this movie Waltz with Bashir the other night, I think it just came out? It's about what happenend during the Lebaonese war of 1982 and it's an animated movie. While the film was good but quite down-pulling at times, the music was excellent and haunting, at times it deepened what the pictures told you and at times it was in a total contrast to the images. Everybody should see / listen to that film.
-
Er, Pump Up The Volume... Wait, that was already my favorite movie, but the soundtrack was BOSS anyways. Sonic Youth AND Above The Law... Srsly.
-
Juno or Eternal Sunshine
maybe even Pulp Fiction
I was wondering if anybody had the soundtrack to choke?
-
I've lost all faith in this forum already. How has no one said Star Wars? The siginature darth vader/dark side tune is amazing.
-
Yeah we don't usually like to suck the dick of John Williams that much 'round these parts. He's certainly not that shithead Danny Elfman by any means, but there's a lot better options out there.
-
There Will Be Blood has an awesome soundtrack. I mean GODDAMNED AWESOME, but then that was a given since Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) composed it
Blade Runner has a good one too, atmospheric
and my third choice is Into the Wild, Eddie Vedder + Kaki King is a great combination
-
A Scanner Darkly. The music is extremely well done for background music, fits well with the scenes, and just adds to the feel of the movie. It's not the sort of stuff I'd listen to very much without the film rolling, but it's still pretty good. The Sting is up there as well, partly because ragtime is kickass, partly because of how anachronistic it is while still keeping with the feel of the movie.
-
Akira.
Some of that music is breathtaking.
Check out Geinoh Yamashirogumi
-
Laugh if you want, Apocalypse Now.
The End at the beginning simply gives me chills.
Star Wars. Sue me. "Across the Stars" was amazing.
I had a solo on my flute, accompanied by a violin.. and I cried during my solo. Violin's really get to me, I love them, and I've always wanted to learn how to play. I've just never taken the time.
300 is another one.
-
The soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James is amazing, but for some reason I found I only liked it on CD and not while watching the movie. The way they edited it into the movie was very poorly done for a lot of the songs. Still a pretty good movie, though.
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mond-amazing movie, amazing soundtrack
Royal Tenenbaums-the soundtrack really set the mood for this one.
-
Ok think most of my favorites have already been mentioned, so I'll just mention one that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned... Platoon!
Also in the West Wing, love the use of Massive Attack as Leo is running to tell the President about the kidnapping.
And if we are mentioning use of music in T.V. shows - The Sopranos.
-
Run Lola Run.
The soundtrack just makes the entire movie. I've rewatched the entire movie without subtitles just because the soundtrack kicked that much ass.
-
Has anyone said August Rush yet? I love Kaki King, she makes me happy. It's kind of a chick-flick, but I watched it with over a girl's house, and I actually liked it. The story was kind of cheesy, but musically, it was really well done.
-
Royal Tenenbaums-the soundtrack really set the mood for this one.
Yeah I loved that Nico part, was very nicely done.
Fight Club is amazing because of the Pixies, but mostly because of Tom Waits' 'Goin' Out West' when they enter the bar. Goosebumps every time, so badass and perfectly fitting lyrics. Here's the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnJIurfr2nI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnJIurfr2nI)
Also Taxi Driver with Robert DeNiro is one of the best scores ever made. Bernard Hermann made a very dark jazzy soundtrack for that movie, and it really set the mood.
-
Kontroll, not to be confused with Control. It's a Hungarian movie about the ticket checkers on the Budapest metro system, although that description doesn't really do it justice. The soundtrack has a lot of really cool electronic music that really makes the atmosphere of the movie that much more ominous and interesting.
-
I definitely have to agree with Everything is Illuminated (of course, I almost ruined it for myself by constantly having "Start Wearing Purple" by Gogol Bordelo constantly playing in my head) O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Juno.
As for a movie not mentioned, The Last King of Scotland is amazing for anyone interested in African music.
-
I just watched "Wanted" and i thought it made good use of its soundtrack. Also, the one song (i don't know who its by but the vocalist sounds kind of like the guy from Cold War Kids) they play a lot in it sounds like "Goin' Out West" by Tom Waits.
-
The Fountain.
Back to the Future.
Give my Regards to Broad Street. (which is more or less just a series of music videos. Paul McCartney.)
Hook
Bunches more that I can't think of (great movie )
I like the use of that Queen song in "Shaun of the Dead."
-
Guys guys I forgot about The Illusionist.
I love Phillip Glass
-
Speaking of Phillip Glass...
Koyaanisqatsi. Sure, the movie and the soundtrack are pretty indistinguishable in some ways, in that at least the movie is inconceivable without the soundtrack.
Ran. Atonal flute music for the win.
These have been my hipster asshole suggestions.
Donnie Darko, Once and Lost in Translation also had good soundtracks.
-
The soundtrack to Ran only made it more terrifying. I guess this is a good thing.
-
Tabarly
(I haven't even seen the movie, but it is probably awesome just because of the music)
-
If we're going by the theme music, John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFFNn5UF3i4) is king.
(sampled by Afrika Bambaataa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXReE3uXehc))
(sampled by Bomb the Bass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgjNb-6EOYw))
(sampled by Terranova w/ Tricky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9znd1o-qnZA))
(remixed by 65daysofstatic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXlKl4L7dQ0))
-
TV Show: The Adventures of Pete and Pete
-
Well if we're going by TV shows now, then Spaced.
-
Oh Brother Where Art Thou/Cold Mountain--instant classics.
24 Hour Party People--if you weren't there, this will make you wish you were.
Groove--I could have danced all night long.
Jackie Brown/Pulp Fiction/the Kill Bills--Tarantino knows what's good, and he knows what's cool, and he knows what's cool because it's good.
Go--soundtrack makes this movie.
Trainspotting--no comment necessary
Shaft/Superfly/Black Caesar--made the whole movie soundtrack thing popular. I mean, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and James Brown...? studio execs took note...that was too much money to ignore.
-
Well if we're going by TV shows now, then Spaced.
The F***ing Timewarp? :-P
-
I don't know how this escaped my mind before.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
-
The Devil's Rejects & the Halloween remake
I'm a pretty big sucker for classic rock, and I don't know if Rob Zombie has any input in the track selection - but whoever made those soundtracks has great taste.
-
Wristcutters: A Love story. (Gogol Bordello and Tom Waits.)
Also Pulp Fiction.
-
Ok thought this would be kinda fun......
Ok this is slightly amazing. As I waited for this page to load, I thought Kill Bill/Pulp Fiction. I was even listening to the Bang Bang song earlier (the one that starts off I was 5 and he was 6)
Anyways, my second would be Garden State, just because that movie and soundtrack mean alot to me. I've had experiences with those songs.
-
Try Car Wash. Car Wash, yeah.
-
I've lost all faith in this forum already. How has no one said Star Wars? The siginature darth vader/dark side tune is amazing.
Dude go listen to Gustav Holst's Planets suite. Mars, in particular.
-
It's a tie between There Will Be Blood and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Both of them were impressive, incredible pieces of work.
-
Hedwig and The Angry Inch is great. Also, the music in Slumdog Millionaire is awesome.
-
a lot of my would-be choices have been mentioned already, so to add new titles to the list I submit:
Beavis and Butthead Do America
The Departed
The score from "In the Mood for Love"
Cry Baby
-
Yes Man.
Premise is shit, but half Eels, half Zooey Deschanel and a They Might Be Giants song thrown in? Yes please.
-
Trainspotting or Dazed and Confused.
-
Having seen Amelie recently, I'm adding that one. Damn good. Yann Tiersen is pretty handy with a piano/accordion.
-
Trainspotting is a good answer, but The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is the only right one. Ennino Morricone is a fucking genius.
-
I was fairly impressed with the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack. The 70s one, not the new one. Candyman is fantastic.
