Title: Looking for some music to listen to.
Post by: Heranje on 22 Oct 2008, 08:18
(and hoping this isn't one of those questions I'll get flamed for)

I'd like to expand my iTunes library, since I've reached the point where I know pretty much every single song in there by heart. So I thought I'd ask you clever people for advice. I'm not particularly "into" the music scene, or whatever you want to call it (most of the references in the comic are completely over my head), but what I do know is I detest most of the "music" played on the radio. This is some stuff I like: The New Pornographers, Pinback, Tori Amos, Moldy Peaches, old Cole Porter songs, 10cc, Squeeze and Talking Heads. I don't particularly enjoy "noisy" music.

I'd use Pandora to find similar stuff to what I like, but they've got that stupid no non-US users restriction, and I'm in Norway. =/ (I actually found The New Pornographers there before they put the restriction in)

So, does anyone know any good bands/whatever for me to listen to?

*crosses fingers and hopes she won't be hit with a wave of Internet Hostility*

Voxtrot. And if you like TPN, obviously check out the side projects. I'm not that big of a fan of Destroyer, but AC Newman and Fancey are good stuff.

Oh yay, people are giving answers! And good ones too! (Hooray for being able to listen to samples of songs in iTunes store)

I'm definitely going to be buying some albums from some of these artists. :3 *makes list*

Klimt 1918 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=11424657)

I think I actually upped their album in the mediaf!re thread somewhere if you want it...

Download the new Lucksmiths album that someone upped in the Mediaf!re thread a few days ago, it's amazing.

Also, Radical Face, and if you by some mysterious reason have managed to miss the Okkervil River lovin' on the forum, now is the time to check them out I guess.

Mr. Bear

i believe there is a Mr. Bear album somewhere in The mediafire Thread. it's really good folky, semi-electronic pop with occasional dark and hilarious lyrics. get it. get it now.

old Cole Porter songs

Outstanding! Get yourself a copy of Ella Fitzgerald sings the George & Ira Gershwin Songbook, post-haste. The whole thing.

Actually, disc 4 isn't strictly necessary. Actually I guess if you're tight for cash you could probably start with the best-of compilation that was released a while back, culled from all her various Songbook albums.

The Sea and Cake might be worth your your time, in terms of the bands you mentioned, they're a little like Pinback and Challengers New Pornos but with a bit of jazz streak.

You realize we have a Mediafire thread, correct?

I do, and I've been downloading from it, but there's something about having the physical albums that I enjoy. (I have too few CDs anyway. My collection looks pathetic.)

Anyway, I have to spend my money somehow. Why not spend it on music? n_n

Also, there's that whole "support your local musician" thing.

Call me old-fashioned.

Well Anna, I'm not Shane or anything but I'm pretty sure he'd be happy that there are people listening to and enjoying his music.

Which is a nice sentiment, but it's also a bit naive. Like it or not, we live in a society in which the means to live in even basic comfort relies to an overwhelming extent on having enough money to pay for food, shelter, electricity, etc. This applies to musicians as much as anyone else. Now, I'd assume that most musicians are not professional musicians. I expect the vast majority have "day jobs" from which they derive their income. But I'd also assume that the more time they have to work at those day jobs, the less time they're able to devote to their music-making. So if a musician's trying to make a bit of money off his or her music, and I'm in a position to give that musician money for his or her music, but I choose not to, because "hey, it's available here for free download" - then, well, I'm just out-and-out dicking that musician.

If you've got no money, and I mean really got no money, like you're struggling just to keep yourself fed, then by all means get your music for free, however you can get it. I'm sure no-one reasonable would begrudge you of that. But if you've got the cash to spare, then why not send some of it in the direction of whoever provides the music that makes your life just a bit more enjoyable?

yeah okay.
but would he honestly be happy to just make music and not expect anything in return?
if he is, then hey that's awesome. but i doubt that all musicians feel the same way.

I also completely agree with this sentiment. If you have the means to buy music you should do that too! I think a mix of the two is the best way to go about acquiring music.

Which is why I bought Shane's album you cunts.

It doesn't really make a difference to me, Anna. I never set out to make money, I just wanted to make some teeth-rattling noise. This is part of the reason the EP I'm working on right now is going to be a free download. I know a lot of bands ARE out there trying to earn a living. I do try to support bands, but it's mostly in the form of going to see them live and buying t-shirts and other merch.

(Dear bands, put your stuff out on vinyl more and I will buy more of your music)

(Dear Emporer Jones, AmAnSet repressings please?)

It's capitalism that's doing this to us!  Give all of your possessions to me and I will divide them amongst the populace in equal proportion.
